Forget 'Jem,' Now Barbie Is Getting Her Own Movie Franchise Posted: It's a Barbie world, and we're all just Barbie girls, you know? Well, that's what Sony and Mattel are hoping with their deal to make a Barbie franchise. Not just one movie, nope, but an entire franchise dedicated to the live-action adventures of the irrationally proportioned doll. To be fair, Barbie has had pretty much every job under the sun, traveled the world, and owned her own house and car for quite some time now, so the narrative possibilities are endless. On the other hand, Mattel's sales of Barbie aren't looking so hot; the toy company made a pretty penny from "Frozen" tie-ins, but Barbie sales are down 14%. Will a Barbie movie lure in younger moviegoers and the adults who played with her back in the day? Do we really believe that Barbie has always been about "female empowerment," as per Deadline and the pitch that won over Mattel? For now, we'll just have to wait and see what Barbie brings. Writer Jenny Bicks is already on board to pen the script; her credits include "Rio 2," "The Big C," "Sex and the City," and "What a Girl Wants," so she definitely knows how to go for the female audience. The question is whether or not that audience will bite. "The LEGO Movie" has been a huge success, but not necessarily because of the toy tie-tin; remember how silly it sounded when it was first announced? If the movie is clever enough and fun enough to appeal to kids and their parents, a Barbie movie could take off despite the doll's increasing irrelevancy. On the other hand, Mattel's big-seller in the doll department are the creepy kids of Monster High. When can we get a movie about them?! 'Orange Is the New Black' Season 2: Watch the First 50 Seconds of Episode 1 (VIDEO) Posted: Solitary life has not been kind to Piper Chapman. Entertainment Weekly has the first 50 seconds of "Orange Is the New Black" season 2, which shows Piper (Taylor Schilling) in solitary confinement after putting a beatdown on Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) in last season's finale. When a prison guard awakes her in SHU, Piper is disoriented and a little bit nutso. Seems she's been using egg yolks to draw a pretty picture on the wall. Pennsatucky's fate is unclear, but it seems like Piper is finally getting out of solitary. Maybe the other inmates should rename her "Crazy Eyes." "Orange Is the New Black" premieres June 6 on Netflix. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Here Are All the HBO Shows Coming to Amazon Prime Posted: It's not TV, it's HBO on Amazon Prime. The premium cable network signed a game-changing deal with Amazon Prime, which allows the streaming service to host older HBO series like "The Wire" and "Deadwood." Past seasons of current shows, including "Boardwalk Empire" and "True Blood," will also be available to Amazon Prime customers. Future seasons of "Girls" and "Veep" will be added to the roster about three years after they air on HBO. Some shows, like "Sex and the City" and "Entourage," aren't included due to other deals. "Game of Thrones" is also not part of it, which just began its fourth season. Plus, as HBO's crown jewel, it may never leave the confines of the channel and HBO Go. It marks a big change for HBO, which hadn't licensed its shows to a streaming service -- that's why you haven't seen Tony Soprano on Netflix. And it's a huge win for Amazon Prime in its battle against Netflix. Starting May 21, Amazon Prime users will be able to watch these HBO programs:

Meg Ryan Is the Voice of 'How I Met Your Dad' Posted: Hot mama! Meg Ryan is joining the cast of "How I Met Your Dad," the spinoff pilot of "How I Met Your Mother," which recently ended its nine-year run on CBS. Deadline reports that the onetime queen of romantic comedies has been tapped as the voice of "Future Sally," who will narrate the series just as Bob Saget did for "HIMYM." Ryan will recount the adventures and exploits of her younger days; present-day Sally will be played by indie movie actress Greta Gerwig (who also will produce and write). And, like Saget, Ryan will likely never be seen on the show. Since her heyday in the '90s, Ryan's presence in Hollywood has steadily diminished. As a recent People article suggested, the actress decided to step away from the spotlight to focus on her family. But she's making a comeback of sorts in a reunion with frequent co-star Tom Hanks -- behind the screen. He will produce, while she directs and stars in the World War II drama "Ithaca." It marks her feature film directorial debut. Photo by Valerio Pennicino/Getty Images for Lancia This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Sisterhood's Pants Will Travel Again for 'Sisterhood Everlasting' Posted: It's so hard to say good-bye to yesterday, and to those traveling pants that kept four friends in touch over the long summer breaks. "Sisterhood Everlasting" will be the third and final movie in the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" series, based on the novels by Ann Brashares. The movie takes place 10 years since the last time we checked in with Tibby, Lena, Carmen, and Bridget, and the gals are all grown up and almost 30. Not even pants have been able to keep them close, and not just because butt sizes wax and wane over the years. Life happens, babies happen, careers happen, and drama happens. In "Everlasting," Tibby invites everyone on a trip that's sure to give viewers "all the feels," as they say. The first two movies starred Amber Tamblyn as Tibby, Alexis Bledel as Lena, America Ferrera as Carmen, and Blake Lively as Bridget. There's currently no word on whether or not the actresses will reprise their roles, but it would be a bit strange if they didn't. On the other hand, they've all gone on to moderately successful and wildly different careers in TV and other media. Will the same audience who ate up the first two "Sisterhood" movies come back for a more adult tale? The readers have grown up with the Tibby and her friends, but it's just as hard to stay in touch with beloved characters as it is with actual friends. Will a YA audience show up for a movie about grown women? Will grown women still care about this YA series? Has anyone washed those pants yet? Stay tuned for answers to these questions and more. A 'Frozen' Sequel Isn't Happening Anytime Soon Posted: An acclaimed, Oscar-nominated mega-blockbuster that has raked in over $1.1 billion worldwide seems to be a no-brainer for a sequel. Yet, Disney isn't even close to working on a follow-up to their smash hit "Frozen." Disney chairman Alan Horn recently revealed (via The Hollywood Reporter) that the company's animation house hasn't started developing "Frozen 2" yet. In fact, he said a sequel hadn't even been discussed, as the team is focusing on launching a Broadway musical. That's sad news for "Frozen" fans; even if Disney were to start working on the sequel today, it would likely take at least two years for it to make it to the big screen. We'll just have to re-watch the original and belt out "Let It Go" for a little while longer. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Jurassic World' Sequels Are Pretty Much Invevitable Posted: Dinosaurs aren't going extinct anytime soon -- at least on the big screen. The upcoming "Jurassic World" will be a potential launching pad for further sequels in the hit franchise, said director Colin Trevorrow. "We definitely talked about [sequels] a lot. We wanted to create something that would be a little bit less arbitrary and episodic, and something that could potentially arc into a series that would feel like a complete story," he told Empire. Rebooting trilogies seems to be all the rage these days (a la "Star Wars"), so sure -- why not do the same for the "Jurassic Park" franchise? Trevorrow revealed that certain characters were written to possibly appear in future films. One is Omar Sy's character, who is the best friend of Chris Pratt's ex-military protagonist. "They work together and have some pretty cool action scenes together," the directed teased. "I wanted to create a relationship there that could be memorable and potentially carry on to future films." Sounds like at least one person escapes the velociraptors! This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Alicia Silverstone's New Book Isn't for Everyone Posted: Alicia Silverstone has a new book out called "The Kind Mama: A Simple Guide to Supercharged Fertility, a Radiant Pregnancy, a Sweeter Birth, and a Healthier, More Beautiful Beginning." Succinct, no? Lucky for us, The Daily Beast did the dirty work of reading it and distilling it down to several main points, like the "almost otherworldly power" of breast milk and "anecdotal evidence" about the dangers of vaccines. In fact, let's read a chunk of what Silverstone has to say about vaccines. "...While there has not been a conclusive study of the negative effects of such a rigorous one-size-fits-all, shoot-'em-up schedule, there is increasing anecdotal evidence from doctors who have gotten distressed phone calls from parents claiming their child was 'never the same' after receiving a vaccine. And I personally have friends whose babies were drastically affected in this way." Although some of the advice could be helpful -- eating veggies is definitely good for you! -- other tidbits, like the information above or suggestions on how to avoid post-partum depression, are actually fairly dangerous. Others, like suggestions on how to potty train your child using elimination communication, aren't feasible at all for most parents, like the ones who have jobs. Plenty of celebs write books on diet and lifestyle that fall into the category of aspirational living, at best -- not everyone has the time, energy, or money to make Gwyneth Paltrow's salmon burgers with pickled ginger recipe from "It's All Good" -- they're not usually insulting and dangerous to people who face real issues in their lives about health, fertility, and child-raising. It's just another way to make people feel bad about themselves, with pseudo-science as an organic cherry on top. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Meet the Patels' Review: 10 Things About Being a Patel and Finding Love Posted: Patels are basically the Smiths of India. With a majority of them living in Gujarat (located on the northwest coast of the country), as Ravi mentions, the Patel population is spread throughout North America as well. You probably know one or two Patels yourself. With only one real girlfriend (read: one real, white, red-headed girlfriend) and a bunch of dates that never work out, Ravi embarks on a journey many first-generation Indian-Americans/Canadians have to go through all the time: Have your parents find you the love of your life. A smart, kind, loving person, who also happens to be a Patel. In 88 minutes, co-director/producer Geeta Patel (who is also Ravi's sister and has her own storyline within the documentary) shows Ravi trying everything, from South Asian dating sites to going to a Patel marital convention (yes, those exist). While nailing all the Patel stereotypes and making us fall in love with his absolutely adorable parents, Ravi gives audiences insight on what it means to really find love and keep it. With a mix of humour, sass and the math of trying to explain the Patel marriage situation to non-Patels, "Meet the Patels" is basically the documentary the rest of the Patel population was waiting for. In honour of being a Patel reviewing a movie about Patels made by Patels, here are 10 truths every Patel knows about love and marriage: 1. Patels marry other Patels Don't be alarmed, this has nothing to do with incest. Traditionally, and as the movie suggests, a lot of Patels prefer to marry other Patels. Now, even though we all have the same last name, types of Patels (like Leva, Koli) differ depending on the area of Gujarat you're from. We also hear the joke about us not having to change our last name all the time, so get original, people! 2. We can hide everything from our Patel parents We can go years and years and years without ever telling our parents about our relationships. While sometimes, like in Ravi's case, you date a non-Indian or a non-Patel, not telling your parents is probably the best route to avoid disappointment and anger. On the other hand, Patels also tend to hide their relationships (and life in general) from their parents to avoid them bringing up the "m" word: marriage. 3. No matter where you go, people will question why you're single Once single Patels reach a certain age, I would say 24 for women and 28 for men, every single family member is suddenly interested in your love life. As Ravi and his family go to India in the first portion of the documentary, it's a great visual example of all the aunties and uncles that don't know how to mind their own business. 4. You marry the whole family Like all South Asian cultures, family plays an important role in every decision you make. When it comes to getting married, most Patels know living with your in-laws isn't something "weird" or "strange." In fact, a lot of the time, Patels prefer living in one giant household ... while other times they just want their own damn space. 5. We secretly like being Patels For any first-generation Canadian or American trying to navigate through a Western country, it can get hard to hold onto to our parents' traditions. At the end of the day, Patels love being Patels and even though we're stereotypically cheap and um, cheap, we do love everything about our language, food, values and culture. 6. Chances of us meeting the perfect Patel is 1/10000 As Ravi likes to point out in the film, the chances of meeting this so-called perfect Patel partner of your dreams is pretty small. Now, while there are a lot of us spread throughout the world, narrowing it down to petty things like caste and cities really limits your Patel options. 7. Dating is exhausting and expensive Now obviously this is not a Patel-only thing, but like Ravi, when you have to date a lot of people in a small amount of time to find happiness, you end up getting incredibly tired and broke. Because a lot of us don't really get to date growing up or tell our parents about the dates we go on, communicating with your parents about dating feels like dating for the first time. 8. The "bio data" is real A "bio data" is basically a resume highlighting so-called important factors like the colour of your skin (the lighter the better) and what kind of degree(s) you have. Now, if you're a Patel, you've either a) heard about the bio data, b) seen your own bio data or c) it is currently in circulation by your parents. 9. (White) people don't get it In one scene, Ravi tries to explain the Patel dating process to his close non-Patel friends, and why his parents want him with another Patel to begin with. As a Patel, explaining the rules of marriage and dating isn't always easy, and for the most part, people just don't get it and probably never will. 10. Our parents just want us to be happy As every Patel knows, as crazy as their parents may be, at the end of the day, they just want us to be happy ... with another Patel. For the most part, even if we don't end up finding the Patel of our dreams, our parents really just want us to be with someone who truly makes us happy, as you may or may not see in "Meet the Patels" (we won't spoil it here). Elizabeth Banks Is Desperate in Our Exclusive Red Band 'Walk of Shame' Preview (VIDEO) Posted: Elizabeth Banks just wanted to borrow someone's phone, okay? In this exclusive (and very R-rated) clip for "Walk of Shame," Elizabeth Banks's character, Meghan, is lost and trying to make a phone call after a particularly eventful evening. See also: the title of the movie. In modern parlance, the walk of shame is what one does after having intimate relations with another person that they've just met. A walk of shame is usually done in one's clothes and/or makeup from the night before, unless it's Halloween, in which case the walk of shame is done in one's Halloween costume. Unfortunately for Meghan, her walk of shame is much more complicated. The recognizable TV reporter has to navigate Los Angeles without cash, a car, her phone, or even her ID. And she has to do it in time to make a really important job interview for a network news anchor gig! Um, we thought that nobody walked in L.A. Sorry, Meghan. James Marsden ("Anchorman 2," "30 Rock," "Straw Dogs") plays Meghan's one-night stand, Gordon, and Gillian Jacobs appears as Meghan's friend, Rose. Steven Brill ("Little Nicky," "Mr. Deeds," "Without a Paddle") wrote and directed this comedy about what happens when people stop being polite and start getting real. "Walk of Shame" opens May 2. Rebel Wilson Tweets Pic From 'Pitch Perfect 2' Set (PHOTO) Posted: Rebel Wilson took to Twitter yesterday to show off a quick pic of the gang on the first day of rehearsals for "Pitch Perfect 2," and the tweet snagged thousands of RTs and favorites -- way more effective than a press release, no? Wilson included the Twitter usernames for her co-stars Brittany Snow, Ester Dean, Kelley Jakle, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, and director Elizabeth Banks, which is a stealthy smart move to get fans on the Twitter train.Wilson isn't the first person to tweet behind-the-scenes pics from a new project. Robert Downey Jr., who joined Twitter just in time to start production on "Avengers: Age of Ultron," tweeted a photo from the set yesterday, as did Mark Ruffalo (who is a dreamy dreamboat who often uses his social media account to talk politics and other good stuff). Darren Aronofsky tweeted from the set of "Noah," whereas Hugh Jackman uses Twitter and Instagram to keep fans up to speed on his adventures. Granted, famous peeps usually have a team to help run their campaigns so it's not like these are all straight from the horse's iPhone, but it's still pretty interesting to pretend you're getting a real backstage look at what it's like to be Wolverine on a press tour. "Pitch Perfect 2" is due in theaters next year. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Robert Downey Jr. Tweets First Photo From 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Set Posted: Iron Man is back. That's the word from actor Robert Downey Jr., who tweeted his first photo from the set of "Avengers: Age of Ultron" Tuesday. And while the photo doesn't show much -- just Downey posing with "Avengers" executive producer Jeremy Latcham -- it doesn't really have to; fans that are eager for news, any news, about the follow-up to 2012's "The Avengers" should be happy to know that the gang is once again back together. It doesn't appear that Downey is in costume (unless Iron Man is favoring reflective neon yellow vests these days), but his arched eyebrows show he's definitely jumped back into Tony Stark mode. And the star's willingness to reveal behind-the-scenes moments like this one certainly bodes well for potential future glimpses of his many co-stars, including Scarlett Johannson, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Cobie Smulders, and James Spader. The film is set to shoot in a number of exotic locales, including Seoul, South Korea; Johannesburg, South Africa; and Aosta Valley, Italy. Principal photography is taking place in London (the likely -- though unconfirmed -- location of RDJ's snapshot). "Avengers: Age of Ultron" hits theaters May 1, 2015. Hot Docs 2014: 'The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz' Review Posted: The coverage was extensive, and like all great journalism, was executed with courage, candour and critical thinking, all while producing effective change in the culture. Some see the award as a disgrace, an indirect tip of the hat from the Pulitzer jury to Snowden himself. How can one man be a National Security criminal and a hero at the same time? This year's opening night film at Hot Docs, "The Internet's Own Boy," explores that very question with the 90-minute tale of another info activist named Aaron Swartz. Director Brian Knappenberger has been awarded opening night film status after riling up the crowds in 2012 with "We Are Legion: The Story of Hacktivists." Although fairly one-sided, "Legion" is a powerful doc that profiled the most powerful group of anarchist hackers online, Anonymous. In his latest project, Kanppenberger sticks to his guns, and ups his game with a more focused look at one man's battle to make a better Internet and a better world. Aaron Swartz took his own life in 2013. He was just 25. The how and why he came to the grim decision is what this film puts into focus. Interviews with friends, family, love interests, co-workers and fellow thinkers tell his story. Brothers Noah and Ben, along with Aaron's father, offer excellent contributions early in the film, painting a picture of a brilliant mind. By 1998, for example, at just 12 years old, our boy wonder had built an early version of Wikipedia, long before the brand would become a household name. He worked at Wired, helped to create RSS feeds as we understand them today, worked on copyright site Lessig, went to MIT, interned at the White House and co-created Reddit. He did much of this while still a teenager. So you get the idea. The film doesn't shy away from the fact that Swartz had a bit of an ego, and a distinct view of what the Internet could and should be. By his early 20s, he saw the ocean of money-hungry start-ups and code-writing minds for hire. Everyone was chasing the greasy buck, but money was of very little interest to him. The second half of "The Internet's Own Boy" focuses on Swartz going rogue and starting his tenure as a very public activist, but getting his hands dirty with some shifty hactivism. His missions included making access to public domain documents free to all Americans, and stealing scholarly research and essays from publishers so that this information could be made available online. To do this, Swartz hacked into a publisher's database and started downloaded massive amounts of data, all via the MIT network. He got caught. In Kanppenberger's "We Are Legion," online activists commit fairly obvious crimes, like attempting to shut down Mastercard or PayPal. Swartz acts were certainly in violation of the law, but his motives are difficult to argue against, making for some compelling cinema. He faced 35 years in prison just before he took his own life. Is the Internet fair? Can it remain neutral and a great leveler for civilization? Snowden is now hiding out in Russia, and Swartz is dead. Both men broke the law in a big way, but by an indirect Pulitzer Prize or an opening night Hot Docs Festival film, they're getting some recognition for their beliefs. "The Internet's Own Boy" is a decent documentary, but Swartz's story is bigger than what it can convey. He took a big chance and shed light into the darkest corners of the Internet. Hot Docs runs from April 24 - May 4 at various venues in Toronto. SCREENINGS Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, Thurs. Apr. 24, 10:00 p.m. Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, Fri. David Foster Wallace's Family Doesn't Support the Jason Segel-Starring Biopic 'End of the Tour' Posted: According to the family of David Foster Wallace, the upcoming biopic of the late author is "not consider[ed] ... an homage," and is not, in fact, at all supported by anyone who knew Wallace. A statement issued by Wallace's estate says that filmmakers behind "The End of the Tour" -- which stars Jason Segel as Wallace and Jesse Eisenberg as David Lipsky, the journalist on whose book the film is based -- did not request or receive permission for the project, and as such, the estate is distancing itself from the film. "The David Foster Wallace Literary Trust, David's family, and David's longtime publisher Little, Brown and Company wish to make it clear that they have no connection with, and neither endorse nor support 'The End of the Tour,'" the statement said. "This motion picture is loosely based on transcripts from an interview David consented to eighteen years ago for a magazine article about the publication of his novel, 'Infinite Jest.' That article was never published and David would never have agreed that those saved transcripts could later be repurposed as the basis of a movie." Directed by James Ponsoldt, "The End of the Tour" is based on Lipsky's book, "Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself," which documents his time on the road following Wallace's "Infinite Jest" book tour in 1996. Lipsky was assigned the story by Rolling Stone, which ended up not publishing the interview until after Wallace's 2008 death. Lipsky released his book in 2010. What Wallace's estate's objections mean for the film remain unclear, since shooting has already wrapped. The independent project still needs a distributor, though, so legal snags from the estate could pose a challenge to "The End of the Tour"'s ultimate release strategy. Stay tuned.
