What Candy Should Get Its Own Movie?

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Just when you were sick of seeing and mistakingly eating too many Peeps over the Easter holiday, the sugary marshamallow treat has been announced as the next branded item to receive its own movie. Surprisingly it's not going to be a horror movie in which a bunch of the little pastel-colored blobs attack a small town. Attack of the Peeps has a nice ring to it. Instead, it'll be something more along the lines of Toy Story, The Lego Movie and I guess Small Soldiers, as that last one was written by Adam Rifkin, who'll now be making Peeps: The Movie. Is candy going to be the new trend for Hollywood's mining of familiar properties? If so, perhaps another kind will lend itself to the horror genre. Gummi Worms, maybe? As for Gummi Bears, they've already been turned...

How Alien Movies Like 'Under the Skin' and 'E.T.' Are Really About You and Me

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Welcome to The Last Sci-fi Blog, our biweekly column about all things science fiction in movies. (This article contains spoilers for Under the Skin, The Man Who Fell to Earth and E.T.) Aliens have a rich cinematic history of arriving on Earth and killing us all. In films like War of the Worlds and Independence Day, they're powerful but unknowable forces so far beyond us that we can barely understand them, let alone fight them. If the aliens aren't killing us, they're deliberately keeping us at arm's length, fully aware that the human race simply isn't ready to join them in the cosmos. In Contact and 2001: A Space Odyssey, first contact with an alien species raises more questions than answers -- extraterrestrials are so far beyond us that they have no...

Poster-Crop Quiz: Can You Guess These Lesser Known Remakes?

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Thaw your brain-cicles, readers, because it's time for another Poster-Crop Quiz. If this week's quiz feels a bit familiar, that's quite fitting! In honor of the release of Brick Mansions, we've gathered posters from 10 films you might not immediately recognize as remakes; Brick Mansions being a new version of the 2004 French film District B13. See if you can identify the posters from their cropped images and leave your guesses in the comment section below. The first person to correctly name all 10 posters will receive a shout-out in next week's quiz. The seasons change, but the props remain the same. Still one of my favorite remakes, The Thing is adapted from the same story as was The Thing from Another World, but with such a drastically...

New Horror Trailers: 'Jessabelle' Haunts the Bayou While 'As Above, So Below' Scares Paris

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT

A pair of trailers for new horror movies hit the Web today, and while they take on very different topics, there is something about both films that caught our eye: location, location, location. For a stretch most Hollywood horror movies took place in one of two locations: a safe, cozy, boring neighborhood in the suburbs where all the houses look the same or in a rundown warehouse or hotel. Thankfully, neither of today's films fit that bill. First up is Jessabelle, from prolific horror producer Jason Blum (Sinister, Insidious) and director Kevin Greutert (Saw VI). It's about a young woman (Sarah Snook, who was the best part of the SXSW sci-fi movie Predestination) who uncovers a potentially terrifying message her mother recorded for her before she...

Here's Who's Starring in That 'Jem and the Holograms' Movie

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Aubrey Peeples (Nashville) has landed her first major film role as Jem in the forthcoming Jem and the Holograms movie. Additionally, Stefanie Scott (Disney's A.N.T. Farm) has been cast as Jem's sister Kimber, while Aurora Perrineau (Pretty Little Liars) and Kayley Kiyoko (The Fosters) will play other Hologram band members, Shana and Aja, respectively. And here's our first tease of them in their respective roles: Catch up on Jem and the Holograms with our original story on the movie below. Rocking '80s cartoon icon Jem is getting her own live-action movie thanks to producer Jason Blum (Sinister, Paranormal Activity) and director Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), but that's not the real news here. According...

Update: 'Friday the 13th' Is Getting a 'Bates Motel'-Like TV Show

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Update 4/24/14: We now have confirmation that a Friday the 13th TV show is indeed in the works. Original director Sean Cunningham will be on board as an executive producer for the series, which will reimagine the Voorhees family in different time periods.  Before you start picturing a time-traveling Jason though, it sounds like the show will follow Jason as a kid when he was at Camp Crystal Lake and then the citizens of the town when he returns years later. Focusing on the community that has to deal with the (decades later) aftermath of a slasher could actually be a pretty promising format. At least it keeps them from having to find a new victim every week if the entire town is the victim (kind of like how A&E's Bates Motel approaches the Psycho story). Our...

See What It Would Look Like if Wes Anderson Directed 'Forrest Gump'

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT

This one goes out to all the Wes Anderson-obsessed nostalgia nuts who wish life was like a box of chocolates — but only the artisanal kind from Brooklyn, hand packed in a box à la 1965. Video-maker Louis Paquet re-created the opening credits for the 1994 film Forrest Gump, about a naive Alabamian whose life surprisingly helped define 20th-century history, in the style of Wes Anderson. It’s a faithful remix, right down to the credits font and music — courtesy of the great Mark Mothersbaugh, who has scored a number of Anderson features. The vintage-friendly vignettes portray aspects of Gump’s life, right down to the Ping-Pong tournament and the shrimping boat (The Life Aquatic with Forrest Gump, clearly). Get your object-fetish fix by...

Watch New Trailers for 'Godzilla', 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' and ''Transformers: Age of Extinction'

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT

We’ve got new trailers to share with you today – but not just any trailers. Nope, these are trailers from abroad. Trailers with an international flavor. Savor their deliciousness. First up is a new Japanese clip for Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla. There’s not a ton of new footage in this preview, but there is some – and let’s be honest: we’d all watch the same Godzilla clip 10 times a day from now until the release because it looks that amazing. Our only concern here is that we immediately think of Walter White every time we see Bryan Cranston… [via io9]   Next up, it’s another Japanese teaser – this time for Michael Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction. Mark Wahlberg introduces the clip, which is...

Peter Jackson Announces a New Title for 'The Hobbit 3,' Plus 'Desolation of Smaug' Extended Edition Details

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT

When The Hobbit series was first announced, it was only going to be two films: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. Now the film has three parts, and only one of the original names stuck. Funny how that works. The second film is obviously subtitled The Desolation of Smaug, and now the third is getting a makeover. There were rumors this would happen, but the talk had the new title pegged as Into the Fire. Well, that's not it. The final film is now called The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. Why the name change? Well, it's certainly a more intense title than the sentimental There and Back Again, which should lure in those who have felt The Hobbit series has been a bit lite on action, but on top of that Jackson explained that the old...

Hey Girls: 'Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 3' Is Coming, Plus: Barbie Is Getting a Live-Action Movie

Posted: 24 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Like us, you might be surprised that more than one Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie exists. In fact, there are two movies based on Ann Brashares’ novel about four best friends (played by Amber Tamblyn, Blake Lively, Alexis Bledel, America Ferrera) whose lives change directions. The young women stay connected by sharing a secondhand pair of jeans.  Deadline reports that there will be yet another film adapted from the Brashare canon — this one stemming from Sisterhood Everlasting, the fifth and final book in the YA series. The story “picks up 10 years later, after the Sisterhood friends have grown apart. It centers on Tibby who tries to bridge the distance by reuniting the girls for a trip that will change their lives forever.” Fans...
