What Cult Movies Have You Never Understood the Appeal Of? Posted: 28 Apr 2014 08:00 PM PDT The whole idea of a cult film is that not everyone loves it. And yet there is a kind of broader popularity for that idea overall. What I mean is that most of us have a lot of love for at least one movie of cult status. Maybe that movie is technically more like a guilty pleasure or a piece of romanticized nostalgia from our youth than a definite "cult classic," but it's still something that we like that's not even close to being enjoyed by the mainstream. But we've all got different cult-film favorites. So, it's interesting to consider where we overlap with some people and don't overlap with others. Today is the 25th anniversary of Teen Witch, a movie that came out while I was still pretty young and enjoying just about everything. Yet I could never... Posted: 28 Apr 2014 06:30 PM PDT These days, with the proliferation of Marvel’s licensing partners, it would be quite possible to decorate your own home from floor to ceiling in Marvel merchandise. If you can put a Marvel character on it, then it exists. It makes sense in this climate for Mondo Gallery to expand its relationship with Marvel, going beyond its custom movie posters into limited-edition art inspired by the source comics themselves. For the task, Mondo solicited Mike Mitchell, the American Academy of Art alum probably best known for the 2010 “I’m with Coco” campaign. At the gallery opening, every character was ogled equally, with guests brushing up against Marvel cosplayers to discuss the finer points of the use of color on an oversized painting of a Sentinel. It... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 28 Apr 2014 05:00 PM PDT Just when you think the zombie craze has hit its peak, someone comes up with a way to put a unique twist on the horror subgenre. For Jordan Rubin, a stand-up comic/comedy writer turned director, it was a brainstorming session with his writing partners Al and Jon Kaplan that led them to the solid gold idea of merging zombies with lovable beavers into their first feature film venture. In Zombeavers, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, three girlfriends hit the road to a cabin on the lake following one of the girls’ boyfriends cheating on her. But before long, the scantily clad gals are joined by the boyfriends and quickly learn they’re not the only ones around when a beady-eyed beaver shows up and ruins the party. Before they know it, the friends, and yes, even... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 28 Apr 2014 04:00 PM PDT We’d love to know what kind of drugs the National Institute of Mental Health was on when it commissioned this wonderfully surreal antidrug educational short in 1971, using the Alice in Wonderland story as its backdrop. The movie opens with a young girl in a breezy meadow reading a copy of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. Once she falls asleep, she's transported to a strange wonderland where the Mad Hatter is high on acid, the King of Hearts pushes heroin, the Dormouse is dozing off on sleeping pills, the Caterpillar’s hookah is really filled with weed (wasn't it always?), and the March Hare is a total tweaker. The U.S. National Archives tagline tells us Alice ultimately concludes that drugs are bad, but the film’s moral message is rather hazy... Posted: 28 Apr 2014 03:00 PM PDT Steven Soderbergh promises to deliver us from the lame soap opera stylings of network television’s hospital dramas with The Knick — and there’s a new teaser trailer to get excited about. The bloody, 30-second clip highlights Clive Owen’s Dr. John W. Thackery, who is sporting a delightfully dandy mustache, and features his voiceover discussing the “treatment of the human body.” The action takes place at New York's Knickerbocker Hospital during the early part of the 20th century, and it’s nice to see that Soderbergh and company won’t be holding back on the red stuff. The field of medicine was a gory occupation during the time period. Thousands of wounded troops required amputations, prosthetic-limb designs were still being refined... Posted: 28 Apr 2014 02:00 PM PDT The calendar is ready to flip to May, which means summer blockbuster season is right around the corner. Superheroes have dominated the box office for years, and this summer looks to be no different, so naturally we’ve got all kinds of comic book news to share with you today. First up, Fox is apparently considering following the Marvel/Disney path to the small screen. After seeing what they've done with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and their deal with Netflix, the studio is now reportedly looking into bringing The X-Men to a television near you. Writer Simon Kinberg shed some light on Fox’s thinking in a recent Collider interview: “We’re still in this place of figuring out what the future of the franchise will be, but when you look at S.H.I.E.L.D. to some... Posted: 28 Apr 2014 01:00 PM PDT Update: A new trailer for the film has just hit online and it only makes it look even more funny, charming and ultimately heart wrenching. Check it out. Previously: Are you ready for the Shailene Woodley whirlwind that's heading our way in 2014? Not only is she starring in her own action-packed Hunger Games-like franchise with Divergent, but she's also the lead in an adaptation of the popular novel The Fault in Our Stars. The latter just dropped its first trailer today, and it just looks great. Really great. In case you can't tell from the trailer, The Fault in Our Stars follows two kids who fall in love while being treated at a cancer clinic. Shailene Woodley stars alongside newcomer Ansel Elgort, and the film tracks the ups and downs that go along with... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Watch: Video Asks If It's Possible to Intentionally Make a Movie So Bad It's Good Posted: 28 Apr 2014 12:00 PM PDT As a lover of undeniably bad movies like Miami Connection, Troll 2 and Plan 9 From Outer Space, this new video from PBS Idea Channel host Mike Rugnetta hits close to home. In it, Rugnetta posits that you can’t intentionally make a film that’s so bad it’s good. Once you start thinking about this, it’s sort of like debating the whole chicken or the egg thing. Rugnetta’s argument is that making a good bad movie basically requires intent and an understanding of what makes a good movie in the first place – or maybe a good bad movie – which means you’re actually making a good movie that just sort of pretends to be bad. The best good bad movies (which the French refer to as nanar) are so effective because of the earnestness and... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
John McTiernan Reveals Plot Details for a 'Thomas Crown Affair' Sequel He Wrote While in Prison Posted: 28 Apr 2014 11:00 AM PDT John McTiernan is back in action after being released from prison in February, and the Die Hard filmmaker is already talking about new projects for his big-screen return. While many of us on the Internet have clamored for McTiernan to bring John McClane back to respectability, it appears as though the filmmaker would like to return to another of his films first: The Thomas Crown Affair. McTiernan reveals that he wrote a script for a sequel while in jail, and has now revealed plot details in an Empire interview. “Nebuchadnezzar had two lion statues commissioned in 1100 BC: a male and a female. Alexander the Great took them when he conquered Persia. Mark Antony had them taken to Rome. Constantine moved them to Constantinople. And at some point the lioness went missing. The... 'Justice League' Confirmed with Zack Snyder to Direct Posted: 28 Apr 2014 10:00 AM PDT Warner Bros. has confirmed that Zack Snyder will direct a big-screen version of DC's Justice League, according to The Wall Street Journal. Henry Cavill (Superman), Ben Affleck (Batman) and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) are all expected to return. No release date has been set. The WSJ article states that it is "unlikely" to hit theaters before 2018, though two later reports claim that the movie will be released on May 5, 2017. So we finally have confirmation of the rumors that have intensified since Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in the Man of Steel sequel last summer, and somehow taken to a higher level with the selection of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. But which other superpowered characters will be in Justice League? Late last week, we heard that stage actor Ray... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
