Most of us, if not all, are familiar with the iconic Police Story series created by Jackie Chan. The very first Police Story (1985) was a major hit and was followed by Police Story 2 (1988), Police Story 3: Super Cop (1992), Police Story 4: First Strike (1996) and New Police Story (2004).

Now comes the latest installment simply called Police Story 2013. PS 2013 is written and directed by Ding Sheng (Little Big Soldier, He Man). The film is a Mainland China production that bears no resemblance to any of the other titles in the series other than the namesake.

With the exception of New Police Story, the others in the series were primarily action comedy. PS 2013 is in the same vein as New Police Story, however, it’s a bit darker and more melodramatic.

The movie opens with a shot of a sweaty, ragged, disheveled Jackie Chan pointing a gun to his temple and pulling the trigger…

Jackie Chan plays Captain Zhong Wen, a seasoned veteran on his way to meet his estranged daughter whom he has not seen in over six months. He catches up with her at Wu Bar, a hip nightclub/bar celebrating its third anniversary.

Immediately father and daughter, Miao Miao (Special ID’s Sally Jing Tian), start arguing over Miao’s tattoos and appearance; while Miao angrily berates her father for his lack of concern for her and her mother, and having never been around when he was needed. Things come to a head when Miao’s mother died at the hospital while Zhong was on duty.

The argument escalates after Zhong is introduced to Wu Jiang (Curse of the Golden Flower’s Liu Ye), the charismatic owner of the establishment and Miao’s boyfriend. Zhong immediately disapproves of the relationship citing the big age difference and the kind of man Wu is.

Before they could further their argument, loud noises below unfolded and all the guests are taken as hostages by Wu. The invited guests (hostages now) are there for a reason and are tied to a tragic event five years ago which will be revealed later in the film.

Time has taken its toll. Jackie Chan was 59 years old when he made this movie and it shows. For me, Police Story 2013 should be categorized as a police drama with some action. Audiences looking for a pure kick'em up ‘Jackie Chan action movie’ will be disappointed.

Jackie Chan and Liu Ye are excellent as polar opposites of the law. One, to protect the hostages at all costs; and the other, using any necessary means to extract the truth he might not want to discover.

The plot is a little convoluted, but not too hard to follow. The backstory of the two main characters were a bit simplistic and overall, took a little too long to build, but nonetheless adds to move the plot along.

Recommended.

THE MOVIE: An inspirational story of a group of inner city kids in their journey through life, challenges and struggles through martial arts and their battle against the Beverly Hills Championship team.

Martial arts star Philip Rhee – mostly known for the Best of the Best series – is directing Underdogs Kids, which he describes as “Best of the Best meets The Bad New Bears and The Karate Kid.” The film has a planned release date for August 27th, 2014.

Underdog Kids has appearances by Richard Norton (City Hunter), Dan Inosanto (Game of Death), James Lew (Big Trouble in Little China), Benny ‘The Jet’ Urquidez (Dragons Forever), Don ‘The Dragon’ Wilson (Bloodfist), James Lew (Lethal Weapon 4) and Philip’s brother, Simon Rhee (Best of the Best). View on set photo.

Underdog Kids is Rhee’s first film project in 15 years. His last appearance was in 1998′s Best of the Best: Without Warning, which he also directed and produced. We’ll have more details on this project as they emerge.

Updates: The film also stars Ryan Potter (Supah Ninjas), Beau Bridges (Max Payne), Tom Arnold (True Lies), Greg Grunberg (Mission: Impossible III), Lauren Bowles (True Blood), Mirelly Taylor (Lost), Rayna Vallandingham (see her in action), and also features the debut of Phillip Rhee’s son, Sean. As for Phillip, he will be playing a character named Jimmy ‘The Lightning Bolt’ Lee. Underdog Kids is currently in post-production phase.

Here’s the newest photo from Underdog Kids, featuring Philip Rhee, Richard Norton, Don “The Dragon” Wilson, Danny Inosanto, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, James Lew and Grand Master Jun Chong. For more, check out Philip Rhee’s Facebook page. | Be sure to check out behind-the-scenes footage of Benny Urquidez, Richard Norton, Dan Inosanto, Don Wilson and Simon Rhee having some interesting discussions.

BREAKING NEWS: Looks like the film was retitled from Underdogs to Underdog Kids, which is most likely due to avoid confusion from a recent 2013 football movie of the same name. With that said, here are three new posters for Underdog Kids (aka Underdogs): Poster 1 | Poster 2 | Poster 3Thanks to Film Combat Syndicate!

Outcast stars Nicolas Cage (Face/Off, Bangkok Dangerous), Hayden Christensen (Jumper, Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith). Yifei Liu (The Forbidden Kingdom, The Assassins), Andy On (Special ID), Ron Smoorenburg (Who Am I?), Jawed El-Berni (Ninja: Shadow of a Tear), the Dasz Brothers (Iceman), Alaa Safi (Chinese Zodiac) and Fernando Chien (Bunraku).

The Holding’s James Dormer will be writing the script and stuntman Nick Powell (who worked on a number of titles including The Bourne Identity and Resident Evil: Retribution), will be directing for the first time.

Updates: According to THR, location scouting for Nick Powell's Crusaders-in-China war movie has begun, with the co-production slated to open simultaneously worldwide in November 2013, says the project's Chinese backers.

Shooting for Outcast has wrapped up in China. THR has an interesting video interview with Nicolas Cage, where he not only talks about Outcast, but he also criticizes Hollywood’s lack of opportunities for male Asian actors. He mentions names like Bruce Lee, Tony Leung, John Woo and Chow Yun Fat. | New poster for Outcast.

BREAKING NEWS: Producer Jeremy Bolt (Pompeii) states there might be a sequel, considering its strong performance by “buyers” in the film market. Bolt also says that a worldwide release is planned, including “the US and China, in September and October this year." – Thanks to Collider (via Variety).
