DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 10:00 PM PDT

New Indie: One of the most sophisticated, intelligent, and gorgeous-looking of all the Academy Award–nominated films of the past year just became available for home viewing. Yes, I know, you already watched Mad Max: Fury Road. I’m talking about Carol (Anchor Bay/Weinstein), the latest journey into the interior lives of women from Todd Haynes. Cate Blanchett is astounding as a well-to-do housewife in the 1950s whose affair with young, naïve shopgirl Therèse (Rooney Mara) threatens to destroy everything else she values. You won’t find a more precisely made, deeply emotional love story this month than this one. And for production design fanatics, the period colors and settings are impeccable. It’s the kind of world you might want to live in yourself...

Yes, 'Bill & Ted' and 'Edge of Tomorrow' Sequels Are Definitely Happening

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 07:00 PM PDT

Bill & Ted 3 Is Planning Another Excellent Adventure The good news for fans of the Bill & Ted movies is that, yes, a third installment actually looks like it's going to happen. Despite its vague up-in-the-airishness these past few years, Alex Winter (Bill) is now sounding a lot more confident, revealing the sequel could begin shooting as early as this fall. "It’s looking good," he tells Forbes. "This is Hollywood so I don’t believe it’s happening until it’s coming out on VOD but we’re all working on the film everyday at the moment in terms of the pre-prep type work so it’s an active project. Hopefully we’ll be shooting it shortly." The fact they're working on it every day is a great sign, and to...

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 05:00 PM PDT

Dinner parties are almost always awkward. The dinner party in The Invitation is downright terrifying.  The newest movie from Karyn Kusama (Jennifer's Body, Æon Flux), The Invitation - in theaters and On Demand starting today - is about a group of friends who gather together for the first time in a long time following the death of one of their kids. But it's not just the looming spectre of grief making everything seem strange. Will (Logan Marshall-Green) starts to suspect that his ex-wife (Tammy Balnchard) isn't processing the loss in a normal way. As the evidence starts to mount that he may be right, The Invitation becomes a layered, intense thriller about what happens when people in desperate need turn to the wrong places for answers. We first reviewed...

Comics on Film: Can 'Suicide Squad' Save the DC Cinematic Universe?

Posted: 08 Apr 2016 03:00 PM PDT

Now that we’re a fortnight removed from the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, a clearer picture has started to develop about what the film is, how successful it’s likely to be, and what the overall condition is for Warner Bros.' ambitious DC extended universe. So far, the “DCEU” has released two films in its burgeoning shared world, both of which have received decidedly mixed critical reactions. Debates continue to rage all over the internet about just how effective Warner Bros., director Zack Snyder and producer Deborah Snyder have been in setting up these new films going forward, with seemingly just as many ardent defenders for their approach as there are fervent detractors. Because of the negative reaction to the film from...

Here's a new trailer for Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Please note that this is a red-band trailer and is very definitely not safe for work (NSFW).
