Watch the Chilling Teaser Trailer For Sundance Hit 'The Birth of a Nation'

Posted:

Birth of a Nation"The Birth of a Nation" captivated audiences at the Sundance Film Festival and set a record when it was sold to Fox Searchlight for $17.5 million. The movie, which has been compared to "12 Years a Slave," is set to open during awards season this fall, and now has a new teaser trailer.

The teaser is more of a mood-setter than an outline of the plot, which is based on true events during the slavery era. Writer/director/star Nate Parker plays Nat Turner, a literate slave who is also a preacher. His master (Armie Hammer) directs him to quell unrest among his fellow slaves, but Nat ends up orchestrating an uprising.
Set to Nina Simone's haunting cover of "Strange Fruit," the teaser is stirring — it's easy to see why the movie won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance. And just as the movie won acclaim from the festival circuit, it's likely to clean up during Oscar season.

"The Birth of a Nation" opens in theaters October 7.

'Fear the Walking Dead' Renewed for Season 3

Posted:

AMC will continue to double down on its zombie drama, and has renewed "Fear the Walking Dead" for a third season.

"Fear," which just debuted its sophomore season on April 10, will return for an additional 16 episodes sometime in 2017.

"What Dave Erickson and Robert Kirkman have invented in 'Fear The Walking Dead' is to be applauded. Watching Los Angeles crumble through the eyes of our characters and seeing each make decisions and try to figure out the rules of their new world – it's fresh, eerie and compelling and we're all in for the ride," said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, in a statement. "As Victor Strand observed, 'The only way to survive a mad world is to embrace the madness.' We thank the millions of fans for embracing this mad world and look forward to sailing far into the future."

"Fear" debuted in August 2015 as a so-called "companion series" (not a direct spinoff) to "The Walking Dead," AMC's flagship zombie show. While "Fear" still lags far behind ratings behemoth "TWD" (and returned to significantly fewer viewers than its first season premiere), its season two numbers so far were apparently enough to sway AMC to sign up for more. The Chris Hardwick-hosted "Talking Dead: Fear" recap show was also renewed.

"Fear the Walking Dead" currently airs on AMC on Sunday nights at 9 p.m.

Caitriona Balfe Misfires Big Time in Tense 'Money Monster' Sneak Peek

Posted:

EXCLUSIVE: Clip - "Money Monster"
Save Sassenach! and are the main stars of director 's new hostage thriller "Money Monster," but this exclusive clip puts "Outlander" star in the line of fire ... or at least her face on a screen is in danger.

The financial crisis story plays out in real-time, and this clip shows a scene where an angry investor named Kyle (Jack O'Connell) has already taken over the TV studio where "Money Monster" host Lee Gates (George Clooney) and his producer Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) were filming a show. We see a piece of the tense standoff, which is also airing live to millions of viewers. Balfe plays Diane Lester, head of PR for a company whose stock has bottomed. Apparently she says the wrong thing to Kyle, 'cause he shoots the monitor while she's speaking. Then Diane, clearly shaken, says the wrong thing again, this time to Patty the producer: "I'm sorry, you have to understand how much of a delicate situation this is..."

Patty, an actual hostage, snaps back from the control room: "Don't talk to me about delicate situations! You have got to wake up and do the math here because it is not adding up to me either." Diane doesn't understand, so Patty adds, "I mean you better ask some real questions and get some real answers..."

Part of the story involves unraveling the mystery behind a conspiracy in the global markets, hence the questions. Watch the full first trailer and cross your fingers that Sassenach stops saying the wrong thing to angry people in "delicate situations."

"Money Monster" opens May 13.Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook.

AMC Theatres Won't Allow Texting After Online Backlash to Proposal

Posted:

People walk past movie theaters of the UThe CEO of AMC Entertainment caused a stir this week when he suggested that the AMC Theatres chain could soon allow texting during movies in order to cater to a millennial audience. Now, following an online uproar, that proposal has been definitively dropped.

The hubbub began when new AMC CEO Adam Aron told Variety that the theater chain wanted to attract more younger viewers, and was considering devoting specific sections of screenings -- or even entire auditoriums -- to texting devotees.

"When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don't ruin the movie, they hear please cut off your left arm above the elbow," Aron told the trade. "You can't tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That's not how they live their life."

While the CEO acknowledged that there would have to be certain ground rules in place for such a proposal to succeed, since the majority of moviegoers would still prefer their experience uninterrupted by glowing screens, apparently Aron did not foresee just how strongly audiences felt. The idea was met by a huge backlash on AMC's social media accounts, and the CEO of Alamo Drafthouse (a chain famous for its strict "no texting" policy) also voiced his disapproval.

AMC responded on Friday, announcing that it would immediately abandon the texting plan. In a lengthy statement released on the company's Facebook page, Aron said that while AMC is always striving to enhance and update the theatrical experience for its guests, in this case, it had missed the mark.

The statement said, in part:

Unlike the many AMC advancements that you have applauded, we have heard loud and clear that this is a concept our audience does not want. In this age of social media, we get feedback from you almost instantaneously and as such, we are constantly listening. Accordingly, just as instantaneously, this is an idea that we have relegated to the cutting room floor.

With your advice in hand, there will be NO TEXTING ALLOWED in any of the auditoriums at AMC Theatres. Not today, not tomorrow and not in the foreseeable future.

You can read the entire statement here. Just make sure it's not on your phone inside of a dark AMC theater.

'Game of Thrones' May End After Two Shorter Seasons

Posted:

Season six of "Game of Thrones" still hasn't premiered yet, but showrunners are already mapping out the series's end -- and it may be a shorter goodbye than fans would like.

In an interview with Variety, "Thrones" executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said that their current vision for how the show should end entails two more seasons after the upcoming sixth, but only 13 episodes between them. Season seven would have seven episodes, they said, while season eight (the potential final season) would have six, down from the usual 10 that the show has produced each season so far.

"I think we're down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We're heading into the final lap," Benioff told the trade. "That's the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that's what we're looking at."

Variety also spoke to HBO programming president Michael Lombardo, who confirmed that he had discussed this abbreviated two-season plan with the showrunners.

"Because where these narratives go, it feels like another two years to them," Lombardo told Variety. "As a television executive, as a fan, do I wish they said another six years? I do."

But the exec left some room for fans worried about saying goodbye over such a short episode count.

"I'm always an optimist, and I do believe we will figure this out," Lombardo said.

The timeframe in which to do so is shrinking, though, since season seven of "Game of Thrones" begins production in July. We hope Benioff and Weiss will have some more concrete answers for fans soon.

In the meantime, season six of the series debuts on HBO on April 24.
