Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Backwards Remake of the Day: Here's what Captain America: Civil War looks like remade by someone who went back in time to the 1940s:   Character History of the Day: Speaking of past depictions of Captain America, here's a video chronicling the evolution of the superhero's appearances in TV and movies:   Cosplay of the Day: Another new still from Captain America: Civil War or great cosplay? The latter, but the funny thing is that this cosplayer thinks his Black Panther costume isn't even good (via Fashionably Geek):   For some reason I still haven't even finished the mask, or started the body, for my new Black...

Final 'Kubo and the Two Strings' Trailer Is a Wild Thing of Beauty

Posted: 28 Apr 2016 09:30 PM PDT

There are some people who simply do not do animated movies. For whatever reason, as soon as you take away a live-action element, they switch off entirely. It doesn't matter the style of animation, it doesn't matter the source material, they think animation is just stuff for kids and move on. If the new trailer for Kubo and the Two Strings is any indication, the newest movie from the studio behind Coraline and ParaNorman is yet another big, big reason to wish you could change those people's minds. There's such a rich tapestry of animated movies to choose from these days. Sure, some are unapologetically for kids only (it's totally understandable for adults to not be lining up for tickets to Angry Birds), but others are sophisticated adult dramas (have you...

The New 'Tomb Raider' Will Be 'Ex Machina' Breakout Alicia Vikander

Posted: 28 Apr 2016 08:15 PM PDT

A few weeks ago rumors started swirling around that Star Wars: The Force Awakens breakout Daisy Ridley had become the top contender to play Lara Croft in a cinematic Tomb Raider reboot. That seemed like a pretty safe choice. Ridley killed in Star Wars, she's got a lot of charisma and makes action look easy. Plus, she's British, just like Croft. Fans rejoiced at the idea. And now those fans may be disappointed. Ridley did not land the job after all. In stead MGM has cast the breakout of another 2015 sci-fi movie instead: Ex Machina star Alicia Vikander. Really either actor would would have been a great fit for the role of a woman who forgoes a safe, comfortable life in the upper crust of society to become a brave, bold adventurer instead, so...

Watch Liam Hemsworth Go After Woody Harrelson in the Trailer for 'The Duel'

Posted: 28 Apr 2016 06:00 PM PDT

The Western has been back in full force for a while now, but this should be the year it really proves popular again with mainstream audiences. They embraced the genre pretty well towards the end of 2015 with such varied works as The Hateful Eight, The Ridiculous 6 and The Revenant. Now we need to see if Westerns work as well at other times of the year. Along with the bigger, more star-studded remake of The Magnificent Seven coming this fall, there's the counter-programming summer release of The Duel. Liam Hemsworth leads the movie as a Texas Ranger investigating a series of murders in a mysterious small town in the 1880s. The place is run by a preacher played by fellow Hunger Games actor Woody Harrelson, and as the official synopsis puts it: "the routine undercover...

A Little Seen 'Nightmare on Elm Street' Deleted Scene Would Have Drastically Changed Freddy Kreuger

Posted: 28 Apr 2016 04:30 PM PDT

A Nightmare on Elm Street really does have one of the most brilliantly simple premises in horror movie history. A strange man, Freddy Kreuger, can kill teenagers through their dreams. That's it, really. Even Kreuger himself has a simple, understandable back story as a villain: he was caught molesting school kids, and so the parents in town took justice into their own hands and killed him before he could hurt anyone else. But as it turns out, Krueger's backstory was initially fairly different. He didn't just get caught abusing kids, we was a flat out serial killer. Not only that, but he killed the siblings of every one of final girl Nancy's friends, and had even murdered a sibling that Nancy never even knew she had. Nancy's mom originally explained all of...

The Rise of the Unexpected R-rated Movie

Posted: 28 Apr 2016 01:30 PM PDT

Last month, a work-in-progress version of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's Sausage Party debuted at SXSW, eliciting a great response. It also confirmed a new trend: the unexpected R-rated movie. Our own Erik Davis was in attendance and he described the movie as "the Deadpool of animated movies, and in a riskier year where a film like Deadpool changes the game when it comes to R-rated superhero movies, Sausage Party -- depending on how it's received by audiences -- may also change the game when it comes to R-rated animated fare." Note: trailer below is not safe for work. Sausage Party is heading to theaters on August 12.   We've been hearing about Batman: The Killing Joke for a little while now. An animated adaptation of the 1988 graphic...

Movie News: Will Ferrell to Star as Ronald Reagan; Downey Jr. Might Do One More 'Iron Man' Movie

Posted: 28 Apr 2016 12:00 PM PDT

Reagan: Will Ferrell will star as President Ronald Reagan in Reagan, a comedy. Mike Rosolio wrote the script, which suggests that Reagan developed dementia during his second term of office and had to be convinced by an "ambitious intern" that he's "an actor playing the president in a movie." The real-life Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1994. Ferrell previously played President George W. Bush on numerous Saturday Night Live sketches as well as a stage production. [Variety]   Iron Man 4: As recently as last month, Robert Downey Jr. indicated that he would not be starring in another solo Iron Man movie, instead describing Captain America: Civil War as "my little Iron Man 4." That echoed earlier comments he had made as...
