The Last Sci-Fi Blog: The Amazing Science Fiction Kernel at the Center of 'Hardcore Henry'

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 10:00 PM PDT

Hardcore Henry is, first and foremost, an action movie. More specifically, it is an action movie shot from the first person perspective, putting the audience directly in the shoes of its title character. The result is a movie that borrows borrows video game language. Above everything else, Hardcore Henry is what we get when filmmakers who grew up with gaming controllers in their hand get the chance to strut their stuff with an actual budget and a crew and stunt performers willing to do insane things in the name of truly crazy action. I didn't love Hardcore Henry, but I admire the hell out of it. This movie sets a goal and it reaches it. For a certain kind of audience, it's going to be a big deal and I can't begrudge anyone for digging it. However, there is one aspect...

New 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' Poster Brings Someone Back From the Dead

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 07:30 PM PDT

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Kingsman: The Secret Service. Double Warning: You're only hurting yourself if you haven't seen Kingsman: The Secret Service by now. Seriously, it's great.   How good was Kingsman: The Secret Service? It got rave reviews and made a ton of money around the world, but at the end of the day those things are just numbers. On a more impressive note, the R-rated action movie was so good director Matthew Vaughn decided to break his 'I don't direct sequels' streak and make Kingsman: The Golden Circle his first ever sequel. That's awesome news, even though it brings a twinge of sadness because we all know that one of the best parts of the first movie, Colin Firth, would not be able to make it back for the...

'Fast & Furious 8' Casts New Villains From 'Mad Max: Fury Road' and 'Game of Thrones'

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 06:00 PM PDT

The Fast and the Furious series has rarely stumbled when it comes to casting. That may not seem that impressive considering most actors big and small would love to be in one of the most successful franchises of all time (even Helen Mirren wants in), but it's a lot harder when you're talking about a series that has such a unique ensemble at its core. There are big personalities already at play and if you toss the wrong person into the mix it could throw off the entire balance. For example, how do you top Jason Statham, the big, bald, gruff badass that played Furious 7's indestructible bad guy? With Charlize Theron, apparently. Deadline is reporting the Mad Max: Fury Road star has closed a long rumored deal to play the villain in Fast 8. She's...

First Looks at Pixar's 'Piper' and Guillermo del Toro's 'Trollhunters'

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 04:00 PM PDT

Since 1997, Pixar has produced animated short films that are intended to be played in theaters before their theatrical features. They've produced other short subjects for home video, but it's the theatrical shorts that get the most attention. Last year was no exception, as the singing volcano short Lava, which played before Inside Out, tended to divide audiences, while the Academy Award-nominated Sanjay's Super Team probably received better reviews than The Good Dinosaur, the feature it preceded. Pixar's next animated feature, Finding Dory, will swim our way soon, so what can we expect from the short movie that will accompany it? Our first look at Piper (above) comes via Entertainment Weekly. The short, which will run six minutes, follows "a hungry baby...

'Rogue One' Buzz: Could Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso Be Rey's Mom?

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 02:30 PM PDT

The first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has finally dropped, and here we go again -- a new Star Wars movie to anticipate, and new Star Wars footage to obsess over.  While we don't learn a ton of information in this first teaser for Rogue One, we do get a brief introduction of our hero, Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones. What the teaser tells us is that Erso has been on her own since the age of 15 and causing all sorts of problems for the Galactic Empire, stealing property, forging documents and taking out stormtroopers.  "I rebel," she says when presented with the crimes she's committed over the years. And she seems like a perfect fit for a rebellion who desparately need help in destroying the Empire's latest weapon, which we now know...

Movie News: Ryan Reynolds Touted for 'The Rosie Project'; Angelina Jolie's 'Cleopatra' Moves Forward

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 01:00 PM PDT

The Rosie Project: Ryan Reynolds (Criminal, above) is considering a lead role in The Rosie Project. Written by Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber (Paper Towns), the romantic comedy follows a genetics professor who creates a scientific survey to find the perfect mate, only to have his plans foiled by a beguiling woman named Rosie. Jennifer Lawrence was once touted for the lead before she exited, followed by director Richard Linklater. [Deadline]   Cleopatra: David Scarpa has been hired to write a new draft of the screenplay for Cleopatra, based on the popular book Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff. Angelina Jolie is still set to play the lead role. No director is currently attached, though both James Cameron and David Fincher considered the project in the past...

First 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' Trailer: The Epic Battle Has Begun

Posted: 07 Apr 2016 11:00 AM PDT

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the future of the Star Wars franchise. That's a bit weird considering it's actually set 30+ years before the events of The Force Awakens, but it represents just how seriously Disney is taking this entire cinematic universe. They don't care only about the chronological future of the series, which we will next see in 2017's Episode VIII. They want to expand in every direction possible, which is why Rogue One is the first ever live-action Star Wars spin-off movie. Set prior to the events of A New Hope, this new movie directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Monsters), Rogue One tells the story of the rebel alliance's theft of the engineering plans to the first Death Star. It may seem a bit redundant to make an entire movie where the...

'Star Wars' on Blu-ray, Black Panther #1, and More Geeky Stuff to Look for This Month

Posted: 06 Apr 2016 09:00 PM PDT

Now that Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is behind us, it's time to look ahead to the next big thing – or in this case, the next month of big things. April is already shaping up to be a busy month for comics, movies, and collectibles, and that doesn't include all of the fantastic stuff you might have been excited about, only to learn that it was an April Fools Day prank. Fortunately, there's a lot of very real, very cool geekery you'll want to keep on your radar this month, including the arrival of one of the year's biggest movies in a feature-packed Blu-ray, the debut of a Captain America: Civil War hero in his own comic, and a sci-fi action movie that promises to be unlike anything we've seen so far. Here's what to look for during the...
