Posted: 05 Apr 2016 10:00 PM PDT

Happy First Contact Day! In honor of this historic date in future Star Trek history -- in which humans and Vulcans first came into contact with each other on April 5, 2063 -- Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin has posted this new behind-the-scenes photo of himself with two new alien species... who also happen to be people we know. Lin teases, "Here I am hanging with two of my favorite people to ever work with. I know this will probably be a tough one since the casting of these two actors hasn’t been announced yet and you won’t find them listed on IMDb. So here’s a hint – I’ve worked with them both before STB. Good luck.” The photo is also part of a contest where Lin has agreed to toss a Star Trek Beyond crew shirt to the person...

Kylo Ren's Darth Vader Shrine in 'The Force Awakens' Has an Unexpected Backstory

Posted: 05 Apr 2016 07:30 PM PDT

As great as it is, Star Wars: The Force Awakens left us all with a lot of unanswered questions. Fortunately, the movie is now on home video and the extras featured on the Blu-ray/DVD/etc. seem to be helping to explain a few things. Or, in the case of one big question, the answer has come indirectly through the promotion of the new release.  Many fans have wondered what the deal is with Kylo Ren's helmet resting place. It came up during an Entertainment Weekly interview with J.J. Abrams, and here's what he said: “The backstory is that that table has the ashes of the enemies he’s killed. That moment was actually shot for, and meant to be used in, the scene where he was talking to the Vader mask.” Not only is that an explanation of sorts, but...

'The BFG' Trailer: Steven Spielberg's First Disney Movie Promises a Magical Place

Posted: 05 Apr 2016 06:00 PM PDT

2016 may end up being remembered as the year Disney dominated the family movie. Not that that hasn't been their domain for quite some time, but this is shaping up to be a banner year. Even if you ignore their Marvel and Pixar titles, just going on Disney's own movies, it's a heck of a lineup. We've already gotten the great Zootopia, soon we'll have The Jungle Book and later this year we'll be getting Pete's Dragon. Between those last two we'll be getting a particularly special film: The BFG. Not only is The BFG Steven Spielberg's first film for Disney as a director, it was also written for the screen by his E.T. screenwriter Melissa Mathison (who passed away late last year) from a beloved book by Roald Dahl. Those are some serious...

'Blood Father' Trailer: A Grizzled, Angry Mel Gibson Fights for Redemption

Posted: 05 Apr 2016 03:00 PM PDT

There was a time when Mel Gibson was one of the most beloved movie stars in the world. His smiling face was on the cover of magazines everywhere. His movies were wildly popular and he could jump in and out of any genre, making a delightful romcom as easily as he could a period piece. And then the angry side of his private life became public and audiences, understandably, started to turn on him. The days of being People's Sexiest Man Alive are long gone for Gibson, but every few years a project comes along that seems like it could mark a career comeback for him. So far, though, that hasn't really happened. Edge of Darkness is a good, adult thriller, but it didn't hit big. Get the Gringo is a fun, gritty action movie, but it slipped out into the world with little...

Posted: 05 Apr 2016 01:30 PM PDT

Now that Star Wars: The Force Awakens has safely arrived on digital, DVD and Blu-ray, we can turn our attention to other imporant Star Wars news. Star Wars: Episode VIII, is currently in production under the direction of Rian Johnson and Johnson was kind enough to share a photo via social media (see above), showcasing a character introduced in the previous episode. The film began production at Pinewood Studios in London on February 15. We knew that Lupita Nyong'o would be returning for new adventures as Maz Kanata, but it's still good to see her back in action (apparently, since Johnson didn't confirm the image is from his forthcoming episode). The character is more than 1,000 years old and is described officially as "a diminutive being with vast experience...
