Charlize Theron Admits Having a 'Rough Time' With Tobey Maguire on Set

Posted:

Cider House RulesEven A-list stars have #officeproblems.

In an interview with V Magazine, Oscar winner Charlize Theron admitted she had a difficult relationship with Tobey Maguire on the set of their acclaimed 1999 movie "The Cider House Rules."

"Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time, yeah. I mean, we're good now. It was a difficult movie," she told interviewer James Franco. "Every day is completely different for a completely different reason. Whether it's the weather, or the writing isn't there, or you don't get along with your castmate, you have to be able to go to something else that's just as powerful. Does it make it as enjoyable? Probably not. I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time. The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time."

But Theron learned a lot about acting from that experience. "It teaches you different things. It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone else."

Theron, now starring in "The Huntsman: Winter's War," is no stranger to on-set conflict. She also clashed with Tom Hardy while filming "Mad Max: Fury Road" in the "maddening" isolation of the desert.

As she told Esquire last year, "We drove each other crazy, but I think we have respect for each other, and that's the difference."

Kelly Ripa Skips 'Live' After Michael Strahan's Surprise Quit Announcement

Posted:

Kelly Ripa Honored With Star On The Hollywood Walk Of FameAwkward! Yesterday, the news came out that Michael Strahan was leaving "Live with Kelly and Michael" to head over to "Good Morning America" full time. Kelly Ripa may have been upset from the blindside, or just not in the mood for light banter, 'cause she skipped today's show. It was not expected for her to do that, so Strahan had to fill time with guest co-host Ana Gasteyer, and address his exit without Ripa.

Ripa reportedly learned of Strahan's departure plan shortly after Tuesday's show wrapped. At the end of Wednesday's show, Strahan addressed his absent co-host:

"I really want to thank of course Kelly Ripa because Kelly welcomed me here and I've learned so much from her. She's been an amazing influence on me and it has truly changed my life to be here with her. I know that the show will continue to be strong and great because of Kelly and Michael Gelman and the staff here. Everybody is so talented and this show has not been around for over 30 years by mistake... Kelly, I thank you and I love you and everyone else here at Live."

Here's his exit announcement:

He's not even leaving until September, so if there is tension between Kelly and Michael they still have to stretch this thing out for the next five months. But he said he'd return to guest host, so they can't hate each other or anything. Right? Ripa may just be upset with ABC for letting her be one of the last to know.

Molly Quinn Is 'Heartbroken' at Stana Katic Exit, But 'Nathan Fillion IS Castle'

Posted:

Sadly, the behind-the-scenes drama with "Castle" is more interesting than any storyline the show has aired this season.

Two days ago, it was randomly announced that both Stana Katic (Kate Beckett) and Tamala Jones (Lanie Parish) were leaving the ABC show, which hasn't even been officially picked up for a new season. Nathan Fillion (Richard Castle) is reportedly negotiating for his return in Season 9, and he eventually issued a carefully worded statement on Katic's departure.

Molly C. Quinn also weighed in on the drama. She plays Castle's daughter, Alexis, who is expected to return if/when the show is renewed. Quinn actually tweeted just before Fillion posted his note. She said she was "heartbroken," but also optimistic that "Castle" can go on with just Castle:

Sounds like she was pressured to say anything at all. She also replied to a fan who said "it's not castle without Becket."

Not everyone agrees with her on that, but that's her opinion and she has a right to express it. For her part, Stana Katic returned to Twitter to share more thanks for her supporters:

Theon Helps Sansa in Chilly New 'Game of Thrones' Season 6 Clip

Posted:

Is anyone else impatient for Sansa Stark to start saving herself on "Game of Thrones"?

Even if she were the one to save Theon/Reek, despite their difficult history, that would be a change. When the photo above was shared to tease Season 6 (which premieres this Sunday, April 24 on HBO), it looked like Sansa was helping Theon out of the water, as part of their escape from Winterfell, where we left them at the end of Season 5. But Alfie Allen was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" last night with Iwan Rheon (Ramsay Bolton) and Michael McElhatton (Roose Bolton), and Allen explained that Sansa isn't helping Theon out of the water, he is helping her INTO the water.

As you can see in the new Season 6 clip below, one of three JKL videos with the actors, Theon is trying to rush Sansa in an escape from Ramsay's dogs, who are on the hunt for Ramsay's wife and torture pet. Sansa says she can't do it, the water is too cold and she'll die. So Theon has to help her. Sophie Turner has said this is Sansa's best season yet, and she'll finally get the respect she deserves, but it's apparently going to take a few minutes, since we have to start with Theon helping her out.

Watch all three videos to hear the actors discuss U.K. fans vs. U.S. fans, and see them hug out their characters's differences:

Don't forget: HBO is free this weekend, so everyone can watch the GoT Season 6 premiere.

First 'The Magnificent Seven' Trailer: Denzel and Pratt Lead a Few Good 'Strays'

Posted:

When isn't acting as guardian of the galaxy (and dinosaurs), he protects the Old West. Based on the first trailer for "The Magnificent Seven" remake, Pratt is bringing the same winking charm to his role as gambler Josh Farraday, opposite as the leader of the new Seven.

The original "The Magnificent Seven" came out in 1960, starring Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, Horst Buchholz, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, and James Coburn. That film was itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1954 masterpiece "Seven Samurai." This new Western sticks with the concept of wrangling a bunch of "strays" to help protect a town, but with a more diverse cast (of men, anyway).

Here's the synopsis from Sony:

"Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures' and Columbia Pictures' The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D'Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money."

Marvel's Hayley Atwell vs. Clark Gregg 'Lip Sync Battle' Is Hilariously Toxic

Posted:

Never mind Captain America vs. Iron Man, Marvel's real "Civil War" is happening Thursday night on Spike in the "Lip Sync Battle" between Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.") and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter of "Marvel's Agent Carter").

The Dubsmash rivals will perform two songs each, per usual, and Spike has already shared some teases -- one of Gregg taking on Britney Spears's "Toxic" (KEEP THE COSTUME) and another of Atwell rocking The Offspring's "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)":

Gregg's teaser clip already has more than 1.8 million views, so you know fans are excited (or traumatized) to see more.

Based on the teaser photo below, we know Atwell's second performance is going to be particularly bold, but there are no sneak peeks for that one yet.

"Lip Sync Battle" airs Thursday, April 21 at 10 p.m. on Spike. Who are you rooting for in this Marvel(ous) showdown? Next week's battle is Joel McHale vs. Jim Rash, but do you think they will they ever get Chris Evans to take on Robert Downey Jr.?

Jennifer Aniston (and Her 'Bubble Butt') Named World's Most Beautiful Woman

Posted:

Jennifer Aniston is still "Friends" with People magazine. They just named her the World's Most Beautiful Woman and popped her on the cover of their annual edition.

The 47-year-old actress told People she was "very, very flattered" when she was told she was chosen. "I thought, 'Oh my God.' There was this sort of very excited, teenage-y kind of moment."

Because the issue is about beauty -- inner and outer -- she talked about starting to take care of her body early in her career, after an agent told her she was rejected for a part for being "too chubby." (Pause to deep sigh for a world where Jennifer Aniston was ever too chubby for anything.) Here's how Aniston reacted to that diss: "I was like, 'What?!' But my diet was terrible. Milk shakes and French fries with gravy [laughs]. It was a good thing to start paying attention." If by "terrible" she means awesome... but now she exercises at least six days a week for an hour each day and watches what she eats. But she does indulge with favorites like chips and guac, and her husband Justin Theroux's pasta carbonara.

Aniston also answered a question on what she's had to accept about her appearance over the years, and she said she's never loved her butt. "It's sort of a thing. I had a bubble butt and was teased." (Can't picture her with anything like a bubble butt, but she said it's funny that people do squats and get injections to have bigger butts today.)

And in case you're wondering if we'll ever see Jennifer Aniston with short hair -- it's a pass. However, in theory, she'd like to try a pixie cut, but only "[i]f I knew I could instantly push it back. I'm very curious to see what I would look like with really short hair. But I'll never do it. Never. I'm a long hair girl. It's like a security blanket."

Check out more in the new issue of People.

Past "Most Beautiful Woman" covers have gone to Michelle Pfeiffer, Jodie Foster, Cindy Crawford, Courteney Cox, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, Lupita Nyong'o, Beyonce, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Halle Berry, Sandra Bullock, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie, Kate Hudson, and Nicole Kidman.

7 Things We Learned About the 'Magnificent Seven' Remake Starring Denzel Washington

Posted:

If there's anything cooler than Denzel Washington firing a six-shooter, we don't wanna know about it.

That was just one of the very exciting things we saw during an edit bay visit to Antoine Fuqua's remake of "The Magnificent Seven." The much-anticipated fall release -- its first trailer hits today -- reunites the "Training Day" team of director Fuqua, Denzel and Ethan Hawke as they attempt to bring this classic Western to new audiences, one that are more accustomed to their heroes wearing Iron Man suits than ten-gallon hats.

But judging by the exclusive footage Fuqua screened for us, if the movie succeeds at anything it's delivering the type of gunplay and likable characters ticket buyers can't wait to see on opening weekend.

In the remake, Denzel inherits the iconic Yul Brenner role of team leader, overseeing a diverse crew of hired guns that include Chris Pratt, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Byung-Hun Lee. The seven enlist to protect a small town's population from the greedy and tyrannical industrialist Bogue, played by "made-to-be-a-villain" Peter Sarsgaard. Securing a diverse cast was important to the director, in terms of distinguishing the remake from the original for modern audiences.

"Having a diverse cast, I loved it," Fuqua said. "It felt right to use diversity to fight tyranny."
In fact, the idea of Denzel in the lead role was one of the first things the director pitched when MGM asked him for what his version of the film would look like. He also pledged to shoot it on anamorphic film, which was on vivid display in a quick scene where our seven heroes ride on horseback across the plain, all silhouetted against the sun. Kinda badass.

Even more badass was an early encounter that the team has with some of Bogue's enforcers in the town of Rose Creek. It's here we find out that each of the Seven stand out due to the weapons they use, as Washington slowly approaches the lead goon and is forced to draw down. Pratt's Josh Farraday is the silent-but-cocky type, and a very quick draw. D'Onofrio is a drunken (but effective) ax wielder, delivering some nasty deathblows -- but keeping it very PG-13.

Lee is the throwing knife expert and Hawke plays Goodnight, an ex-Civil War hero (and sharpshooter) suffering from PTSD. He can't bring himself to fire his rifle in a key moment, as one of the bad guys gets away. His sweaty face twitches as his rifle quakes with fear in his hands. He and Farraday do not get along as a result of his inaction, their animosity boiling over in a later scene where the two are trying to train the locals how to fight and shoot.

The scene-stealer was Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier), a character not in the original film. He is the Native American equivalent of the Avengers' Hawkeye -- an insanely-good bow and arrow expert. If the test screening reactions Fuqua witnessed were any indication, expect Red Harvest to emerge as a fan-favorite.

The only thing more impressive than the action screened was the confidence in which Fuqua talked about it. His professionalism and passion for the material was inspiring, to the point where one got the sense he would have talked about the film into the wee hours if not for having to get back to work.
While shown largely out of context, the scenes we saw set up the tone and world of "Seven" very well. It's a PG-13 Western, as Fuqua always intended it to be. But it's "right on the edge," the director said. "We're not going for gore." Washington is great, as always, and it's also worth noting that audiences have never seen Chris Pratt in this type of role before. We're interested in seeing a lot more of Pratt's dynamic with the team, especially with Denzel and Hawke's characters.

In addition to exclusive clips, Fuqua shared several key insights into the making of the film. Here are some highlights:

1. Soon after his meeting with MGM execs, Fuqua reached out to Washington and sent him the script. Soon after Washington read it, he agreed to sign on.

2. According to Fuqua, Hawke was very insistent on getting a role in the film. Fuqua told us a story about how the actor literally cornered the director in New York and said he has to be in this movie.

3. At one point, the director was juggling pre-production demands while facing the possibility that deals could not be made in time to lock down his main actors. But, over the course of a weekend, the deals worked out and the Magnificent Seven would ride again.
4. But the process took a toll on Fuqua. At one point, the movie was this close to falling apart -- and with it the director's desire to make it. But a meeting with the film's composer, the late James Horner, changed his mind. Fuqua joined Horner at his house in Calabasas, "which is filled with all these toys -- these classic, antique toys," the director said. And as the two discussed the problems the film faced on its way to a greenlight, Horner just listened and... looked out his window.

"He told me that here, in Calabasas," Fuqua recalled, "they used to raise horses" and ride them across the land. Horner's story eventually turned into a call to action for the director, with the Oscar-winning composer urging the filmmaker to make this movie -- and put an African-american as the lead in a western. Horner told the director not to worry about his fee or any thing like that, just to make it happen. And, thankfully, happen it did.

5. "No friends or family screenings," Fuqua said. But they did have two test screenings.

6. What did these test screenings tell the director about his movie? Well, that it was funnier than expected. "More people laughed in this than any other movie" he had screened, Fuqua revealed. They especially loved the diverse cast and their engaging on-screen chemistry.

7. The new film is not a Xerox of the original -- which itself was an American remake of Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai."

"We kept the DNA of the characters from 'Seven Samurai' for [the new] 'Magnificent Seven,'" Fuqua clarified, adding that Kurosawa's film was, tonally, his benchmark throughout production. Especially when it came to the "epic scale" of the film's final battle.

We will see just how big that climatic showdown is when "Magnificent Seven" hits theaters Sept. 23.
