Watch: First 'Doctor Strange' Trailer Introduces a New Way to Save Lives

Posted: 13 Apr 2016 02:06 AM PDT

The first teaser trailer for Marvel's Doctor Strange just debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, introduced by its star, Benedict Cumberbatch, and it looks amazing. Near the end, Cumberbatch says two words that are probably key to the whole movie, but before that his presence as the titular character is felt in every frame as he strides through a variety of settings, both mundane and fantastical. What's even more surprising, though, is the appearance of Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, a master who may be ready to teach Doctor Strange a thing or two. We also catch glimpses of Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and some spectacular visual effects. Watch the teaser below.   Marvel’s Doctor Strange will open in theaters on November 4, 2016.

Today in Movie Culture: Alternate Ending to 'The Jungle Book,' the Inquisitiveness of Luke Skywalker and More

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 11:00 PM PDT

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Movie Takedown of the Day: In anticipation of the live-action remake, Honest Trailers pokes fun at the bare necessities of Disney's animated version of The Jungle Book, including all new song parodies:   Alternate Ending of the Day: See how the animated version of The Jungle Book -- and presumably the new live-action remake -- should have ended, quite quickly:   Supercut of the Day: Luke Skywalker is a very inquisitive character, and this montage of just him asking questions throughout the first Star Wars emphasizes this part of his personality:   Cosplay of the Day: This family cosplay photo depicting a scene from Star Wars: The Force Awakens almost...

Ellen DeGeneres's Talk Show Was Basically the 'Finding Dory' Casting Couch

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 09:30 PM PDT

Pixar is known for their film literacy, evidenced in all their homages to classic and contemporary cinema, but apparently they're also heavily influenced by television. Just look at the casts of Toy Story and A Bug's Life and "you can tell what was on TV at the time," says studio staple Andrew Stanton. And now it's the same with his latest, Finding Dory, with its inclusion of multiple actors from Modern Family among its voice cast (never mind it also features two stars of The Wire, which went off the air eight years ago). One woman's television presence has been particularly influential to the casting of Finding Dory, as well as its predecessor, Finding Nemo. The first movie, released back in 2003, originally was to have a male sidekick for Marlin...

Kevin Feige Calls 'Black Panther' a "Sweeping" Movie That Will Show Off the Wonder of Wakanda

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 08:00 PM PDT

Captain America: Civil War has to pull off possibly the hardest Marvel mission yet. It not only has to work as a solo Captain America character story, but it also has to be a team movie with stakes so big they threaten to fracture the Marvel cinematic universe as we know it. They can't do that last part without bringing in the largest number of characters yet for a non-Avengers movie, but not only is it basically a role call for everyone we know so far (minus a few exceptions like Thor), it's also introducing us to two major characters who will also be getting their own solo movies in the not too distant future: Black Panther and Spider-Man. One thing Marvel Studios does incredibly well is keep an eye on what's just around the corner, which is why at a recent Captain...

New 'A Monster Calls' Trailer Introduces Us To 2016's Other Friendly Giant Movie

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 06:30 PM PDT

Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War is the cinematic rivalry everyone has been focused on this year. They're both two enormous, spectacle-packed movies about superheroes being forced into a scenario where their differing ideologies send them to blows. Even beyond the normal DC Comics and Marvel divide, the comparisons between the two are inevitable. But there's another smaller scale (though still CGI heavy) movie rivalry brewing between two 2016 movies that look like they're playing in very similar sandboxes. We're talking about Steven Spielberg's The BFG and J.A. Bayona's A Monster Calls. Both movies are about young kids who have experienced loss and death too early in life. Both see those kids processing that loss through a world of...

Why 'Story of Your Life' May Be the Year's Breakout Sci-fi Movie

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 03:00 PM PDT

If you're not at all familiar with CinemaCon, it's this annual convention for theater owners in Las Vegas and kind of like a mini Comic-Con, just without the cosplay and wild fan-related outbursts. What it does have in common with Comic-Con is its footage presentations, and this year all the major studios are in Vegas with a preview of their upcoming slates. We'll be reporting on what we see and hear throughout the week, beginning with Paramount Pictures, who opened the convention with a presentation that included films like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Ben-Hur, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Robert Zemeckis' Allied, Denzel Washington's Fences and our most anticipated of all these, Story of Your Life. (Yes, Star Trek Beyond was noticeably...

Steven Spielberg Sets 'The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara' to Direct Before 'Indiana Jones 5'

Posted: 12 Apr 2016 01:30 PM PDT

After Steven Spielberg's acclaimed historical drama Lincoln (above) opened in theaters late in 2012, the filmmaker decided not to move forward with his planned adaptation of action epic Robopocalypse. He then agreed to direct American Sniper, though he dropped out of that project in August 2013. Eventually, however, Spielberg moved on to Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies, and since then he's been on a roll. Bridge of Spies received six Academy Award nominations, including best picture, and Mark Rylance won the Oscar for best supporting actor. After the film wrapped production last year, Spielberg moved on quickly to The BFG, an adaptation of Roald Dahl's fantasy story for children that also features Rylance; it's due for release on July 1. While The BFG is...
