Why The U.S. Military Is Making Real Laser Weapons Sound Like 'Star Wars' Blasters

Posted: 09 Jun 2015 09:30 PM PDT

There was a time when the very idea of laser weapons seemed like pure science fiction. That's no longer the case, however. It's 2015 and the future is now. Intergalactic smugglers may not be carrying them on their hips just yet, but laser weapons are a very real thing. There's one problem with them, though, and apparently the key to solving it lays in Star Wars. In movies, laser blasters almost always make a "pew-pew" sound as they fire. In the real world that doesn't happen. Light doesn't actually make a sound. And that's a problem for the military. Since the lasers are already firing an invisible beam, how can you tell the gun is even working properly? You make it go "pew-pew," that's how. According to an article on...

'Batman v Superman' Official Synopsis Teases War, Plus: New Batmobile and Wonder Woman Previews

Posted: 09 Jun 2015 08:00 PM PDT

It's not hard to guess the plot of a movie called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It's got Batman. It's got Superman. They're going to fight. But today things got slightly more official with Warner Bros. revealing the first synopsis. Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs.  And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before. All of that was hinted at in the teaser trailer, of course, but it is curious that the synopsis refers to them being "at war with...

Watch: Perfect Video Proves Bryce Dallas Howard and Jessica Chastain Aren't The Same Person

Posted: 09 Jun 2015 06:30 PM PDT

Bryce Dallas Howard is having a great week. No, not because everyone loves the new trailer for The Martian. That's Jessica Chastain starring once again in a space-travel movie with Matt Damon. Howard is the one you'll see on the big screen starting Friday, in Jurassic World. It's easy to remember, because she apparently likes to join franchises for their fourth installments (see Terminator Salvation). She also can be seen this month as herself in her real life in the tearjerker HBO documentary The Lion's Mouth Opens, supporting her filmmaker friend Marianna Palka as she waits to hear if she's inherited an incurable disease. But never mind that for now (see it later, though), because today it's time to have fun with the actress and sing along to her new...

This first trailer is more of a teaser stacked with eye-popping imagery and less step-by-step plot specifics (hey, if you want those, the books have been out for years), so there's no risking of watching it and feeling like you've just seen the whole thing. That...
