'Titanic' Composer James Horner's Plane Crashes, Pilot Dead

Posted:

James Horner - 2011 Doha Tribeca Film Festival - Day 3VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A single-engine plane registered to Oscar-winning composer James Horner has crashed in Southern California, but the identity of the one person who died has not been released.

Ventura County fire spokesman Mike Lindbery says the crash happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Los Padres National Forest.

The pilot was killed. No one else was on board.

Jay Cooper, an attorney for the Horner, says the plane was one of several owned by the 61-year-old composer. He says no one has heard from Horner and that "if he wasn't in it, he would have called."

Horner won two Oscars for his work on the 1997 film "Titanic."

The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane was an S-312 Tucano MK1 turbo-prop with two seats.

NBC Cancels 'Hannibal' After 3 Seasons

Posted:

NBC has decided against another helping of "Hannibal": The network has canceled the horror-tinged drama after three seasons.

The network announced the news on Monday, and while it didn't provide any specific reasoning for the move, it seems that poor ratings were the culprit. The critically-acclaimed series is currently in the midst of airing its third season, which NBC held for a summer debut. Deadline reports that the show, which did decent numbers on DVR and on demand, just couldn't connect with enough viewers for NBC's bottom line, and likely would have been better-suited for a cable network.

Creator Bryan Fuller had apparently seen this ending coming, having secured his next job running Neil Gaiman adaptation "American Gods" for Starz. He released a statement thanking the network for its support of the show.

"NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared, and kept us on the air for three seasons despite Cancellation Bear Chow ratings and images that would have shredded the eyeballs of lesser Standards & Practices enforcers," Fuller's statement said. "Jen Salke and her team have been fantastic partners and creatively supportive beyond measure. HANNIBAL is finishing his last course at NBC's table this summer, but a hungry cannibal can always dine again. And personally, I look forward to my next meal with NBC."

In its own statement, NBC said it was "incredibly proud" of "Hannibal."

"Bryan and his team of writers and producers, as well as our incredible actors, have brought a visual palette of storytelling that has been second to none in all of television - broadcast or cable," the network's statement said. We thank Gaumont and everyone involved in the show for their tireless efforts that have made 'Hannibal' an incredible experience for audiences around the world."

No definitive series finale date has been announced yet.

'Jurassic World' Is New Fastest Film to Reach $1 Billion, Besting 'Furious 7'

Posted:

"Furious 7" just wasn't fast enough: "Jurassic World" has officially lapped that film as the fastest flick to earn $1 billion at the international box office.

In the race for box office records, it seemed "Furious 7" would be hard to beat. But like a hungry Indominous Rex, "Jurassic World" has been chomping up records left and right since its June 12 debut, first scoring the biggest worldwide opening weekend of all time, then the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time. And while "Furious 7" achieved the jaw-dropping milestone of racing to $1 billion in only 17 days -- besting previous champs "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2" and "The Avengers" -- apparently that was just too long for "World," which blew past that impressive feat in just 13 days.

As Forbes reports, "World" has been on an insane trajectory since its release. It sat at the 75th all-time spot on the global box office charts on Friday, before leap-frogging up 52 spots on the list by weekend's end. On Sunday night, it sat at around $981 million, and reached the sweet, round $1 billion mark on Monday, placing it at number 22 on the all-time list -- and rising.

It seems that the sky's the limit for "Jurassic World," and TheWrap wonders if it has enough momentum to take on the top of the all-time list: "Avatar" ($2.8 billion) and "Titanic" ($2.2 billion). At this point, "World" should easily slide into the top ten on the chart, though those are some huge numbers near the peak. Still, "World" has already proven that it can beat Marvel, so the sky is really the limit for this flick; its real competition will be out later this year (hey there, "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 2" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens"!).

Stay tuned. There's certainly plenty more money -- and plenty more records -- to be made.

'Selma' Director Ava DuVernay May Helm 'Black Panther': Report

Posted:

Women In Film 2015 Crystal + Lucy Awards - ArrivalsUPDATE: Multiple sources on Twitter say MCU Exchange's report is premature, and DuVernay has not been offered the job yet. One source says that she's not even the top choice for the gig. We'll see if Marvel weighs in on this one anytime soon.

ORIGINAL POST:

Rumors swirled back in May that Marvel was eyeing "Selma" director Ava DuVernay to helm an upcoming superhero flick, and now, one report suggests that DuVernay has already locked up a high-profile job for the studio.

According to fansite MCU Exchange, DuVernay has been tapped to direct "Black Panther," which stars Chadwick Boseman as the titular hero. The site reports that while talks did indeed begin in May and continued throughout the past month, the esteemed director has only just now officially agreed to take the gig. (Marvel hasn't commented on MCU Exchange's report, or issued a director announcement of its own.)

If true, DuVernay's hiring is a historic one for Marvel, marking her both the first female and the first African-American to helm a flick for the studio. (Patty Jenkins was initially tapped to direct "Thor: The Dark World," but eventually parted ways with the studio over creative differences. She's currently attached as rival studio DC Comics's inaugural female director for "Wonder Woman.") According to a report from TheWrap from last month, Marvel is interested in hiring a female director for "Captain Marvel," too.

"Black Panther" will revolve around T'Challa, prince of the land of Wakanda, charged with ascending to his father's throne and avenging his death. According to MCU Exchange, DuVernay was hired well in advance of "Black Panther"'s 2018 release date so she could be on set for the filming of "Captain America: Civil War," which will introduce Black Panther and Wakanda.

Stay tuned for official word from Marvel. "Black Panther" is due in theaters on July 6, 2018.

'The Bachelorette': Kaitlyn 'Slut Shaming' Heats Up After Nick Sex in Dublin

Posted:

UPDATE: Yeah, fans had strong reactions after Kaitlyn and Nick got hot and heavy in Dublin. It didn't help that they made out in a church (!) before going back to her hotel room. Check out some of the reactions on Twitter -- a lot of fans were most disgusted that she did this with Nick. If it were Shawn, maybe they'd feel differently. But no, making out in a church would not go over well with anyone.

Original post:

It was only a matter of time and apparently that time is tonight. Right after Kaitlyn Bristowe was revealed as "The Bachelorette" for Season 11, ABC shared a promo that teased a sex scandal, 'cause she apparently had sex with one of the guys while still dating the rest of the harem. It sounds like the Monday, June 22 Week 6 episode set in Dublin, Ireland is going to cover that sex territory and viewer reaction is expected to be ... strong.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

Reality Steve, who shares spoilers about every season, had already said the sex was with controversial returnee Nick Viall. E! News also heard that it was Nick, and a source elaborated, telling E!, "It happened after they spent the day touring in Dublin. During the date, they had a hard time keeping their hands off each other. When it was over, she invited him back up to her hotel room." However it plays out, it's sure to be dramatic, and in case we didn't already know that, The Powers That Be are emphasizing it.

Here's a tweet from show creator Mike Fleiss: And here's one from ABC exec Robert Mills: And here are teases from Reality Steve: Yikes.

But while we're talking spoilers, Reality Steve had initially said that Nick and Shawn B. were the final two and Kaitlyn left single -- picking no one -- but after Kaitlyn shared a Snapchat video with Shawn, Reality Steve updated with intel that she did pick Shawn and they are engaged. So keep in mind that Kaitlyn and Shawn are probably happy somewhere, fully aware that she did whatever she did with Nick. It's not like it's a bad thing to have sex, but it's not that cool to do it outside of the fantasy suite while still dating several other people that are not allowed to date anyone but you. Still love her, just saying. But if she does pick Shawn in the end, then this is just water that has to make its way under the bridge before they can both move on. (What about Nick, though? If this is all true, should we expect another round of "If you weren't in love with me, I'm just not sure why you made love with me"?)

How do you feel about this whole thing?

'Ant-Man' Got a Cute New Father's Day Themed Trailer

Posted:

Marvel is releasing Paul Rudd's "Ant-Man" movie on July 17, and they created a special teaser for Father's Day, focusing on the character of Scott Lang and his relationship with his daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson). In the trailer we see Scott bond with his little "peanut" and apologize for being late since he was out saving the world. We also see Scott's ex-wife, Maggie (Judy Greer) tell him, "Be the hero that she already thinks you are." Sniff.

Check it out: The first official trailer was longer and more informative, with shots of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), his daughter Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), and industrialist Darren Cross (Corey Stoll). But this one is really sweet and highlights the awwwww-worthy side of Paul Rudd, who is pretty darn lovable in general.

What do you think of "Ant-Man" so far, based on what you've seen?

Chris Pratt 'Trains' Velociraptors With Kids At Children's Hospital
Chris Pratt is the box office king right now, but he's still Johnny Karate at heart. 'Once Upon a Time' Creator Describes Season 5 in One Word

Posted:

ABC's "Once Upon a Time" Season 4 ended with the name "Emma Swan" shown on the Dark One's Dagger. So now our main hero, The Savior, is also The Dark One. That should be interesting, dearies... OUAT Season 5 will premiere Sunday, September 27 at 8 p.m., and creators Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis have only just begun to work on the scripts. But they recently teased some details to Zap2it, and it sounds like a heavy focus will be on Jennifer Morrison's character.

When Zap2it asked for a one-word description for Season 5, Kitsis answered: "Swan." Not Emma. Not Darkness. Swan. A swan is a symbol of beauty, so maybe we'll see an Ugly Duckling-like story. Whatever happens, "Captain Swan" shippers who love Captain Hook with Emma Swan are ready to embrace Captain Dark Swan. That's not to say that Emma will dominate the season, since Horowitz told Zap2it an overall theme has been talked about, but not confirmed. "We start with a theme we want to explore and go from there," he said. "We've done our mini-camp. We actually have the next month so we like to sit for the next month and ask 'Does it still hold true?'"

They have the rest of the summer to hammer out the details and then another full year of magical mayhem is headed our way. Are you excited/nervous/exhausted/all/other?

How 'Inside Out' Shattered Box Office Expectations

Posted:

disney pixar's inside out joyMost box office pundits expected Disney/Pixar's "Inside Out" to cower before the might of "Jurassic World's" dinosaurs this weekend and become the first film in Pixar's 20 years of feature filmmaking to fail to open atop the box office chart. And while that's what happened, no one predicted that "Inside Out" would still set a box office record with its stunning estimated $91.1 million premiere.

No one was predicting better than $70 million for the cartoon. But on a per-screen basis, it actually came within a hair's-breadth of "Jurassic World," which earned $23,775 per venue, just $599 more than the $23,076 per screen that "Inside Out" scored.

Indeed, throughout a summer that (until "Jurassic World's" record-smashing debut last weekend) looked like it was going to slump well below last summer's numbers, industry observers have been consistently underestimating this season's hits. That includes the bean-counters at Disney itself, who went into the weekend expecting a $65-to-$70 million opening for "Inside Out" and found themselves adjusting their predictions upward almost hour-by-hour on Friday and Saturday. Even late Saturday, they were still predicting a mid-80s debut, while crossing their fingers to break $90 million. Admittedly, all studio marketers like to predict conservatively, so that it's a pleasant surprise if the movie surpasses expectations and less of a disappointment if it doesn't.

But even independent observers have been giving lowball predictions all summer, to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. Everybody was off by at least $80 million last weekend with "Jurassic World," and most were off by at least $20 million this weekend with "Inside Out."

Why have the pundits been so consistently wrong? Perhaps they're still stuck following conventional wisdom from years past about what's actually happening at the multiplex these days. Here are a few box office lessons for those who haven't reexamined the old maxims.

Originality isn't dead. Remember a few weeks ago, when pundits were writing off "Tomorrowland" and "Aloha" as failures of originality? Original movies don't work, the conventional wisdom said, and audiences now only want sequels and reboots. In fact, "Tomorrowland" and "Aloha" could be chalked up to failures of both marketing (how to sell a movie whose very premise is a secret, or can't be easily summarized in a sentence?) and execution (critics and audience both felt that neither film delivered).

This weekend, "Inside Out" shattered the record for the biggest opening weekend for a movie with an original screenplay. (The previous record-holder was 2009's "Avatar," at $77 million.) Granted, you could argue that the movie was easier for Disney to market than "Tomorrowland," since the Pixar brand is so strong, it practically sells itself, and since "Inside Out" is a movie that critics and audiences agree is actually good. Still, all these caveats prove is that audiences will go see an original movie if it's well-made and properly marketed.

3D isn't dead. It's long been assumed that American audiences aren't as fond of 3D as viewers overseas, since North American theaters slap costly glasses-rental surcharges on 3D or IMAX tickets. If as much as 15 or 20 percent of a movie's revenue was attributable to 3D screenings, that was a healthy number. So far, however, 47 percent of "Jurassic World" revenue has come from 3D screenings, and 11 percent has come from IMAX. That follows a trend for boosted 3D revenue for such summer 2015 movies as "San Andreas," "Mad Max: Fury Road," and "Avengers: Age of Ultron." "Inside Out" continued this trend with 28 percent of this weekend's earnings coming from 3D venues.

Female protagonists work. You'd think this would be obvious after the successes this summer of "Pitch Perfect 2," "Spy," and (arguably) "Mad Max: Fury Road." Not to mention the successes of other recent female-fronted Disney cartoon, especially "Frozen," the biggest animated box office hit of all time. Nonetheless, it helps to keep reminding Hollywood of this, especially with a movie whose principal voice cast is almost entirely female, and in a narrative that doesn't involve princesses. What's more, the movie has been a smash overseas, too, disproving the notion that the foreign audiences that are now the industry's most lucrative customers don't want to see women in lead roles.

The theatrical experience isn't dead. This may be the single biggest reason that this summer's hits are exceeding expectations. For along time, pundits have been declaring the multiplex dead, citing declining numbers of tickets sold. And yet, this summer's movies prove that, if you want to lure people off their couches and away from their home entertainment systems, all you have to do is release movies people actually want to see.

'Orange Is the New Black' Star Posts to Angry Fans on Father's Day: 'TV Is Not Real Life'

Posted:

Warning: Spoilers ahead from "Orange Is the New Black" Season 3.

TV is not real life but, technically, Netflix is not TV. So ... is Netflix real life? DON'T RUN FROM THE QUESTION, MATT MCGORRY! Poor Matt has been taking serious heat from "Orange Is the New Black" fans, because his character, Bennett, did a cowardly thing in Season 3, and anytime an actor/actress plays a character, he or she is treated like that character. This is good if you play someone cool that everyone loves, but not so good if that character does something that ticks people off. When that happens, you are pummeled online with tweet after tweet asking why you did something you never actually did. It's good to have a passionate audience, but not so good when it affects your real life in a negative way.

BuzzFeed did a story on how fans have harassed Matt because of Bennett's Season 3 storyline, where he leaves pregnant Daya hanging. Matt responded to the post by admitting that the fan reaction has upset him:
On Father's Day, Matt shared a photo with OITNB co-stars Dascha Polanco and Elizabeth Rodriguez and tried to cheekily set the record straight on who he is and is not:

Happy Fathers Day to all the real fathers out there! I am an actor and I play the fictional character John Bennett on the fictional television show entitled Orange Is The New Black. Here I am with actresses Dascha Polanco and Elizabeth Rodriguez who play make-believe mother-daughter characters named Dayanara and Aleida Diaz on the made up television program with me. They are not mother and Daugther in real life even though they and we play pretend characters that are sometimes even the opposite of who we are as real live people while not reflecting our real lives because it is not real. Moments before this photograph was taken I was even saying words that were written by another person, all the while pretending that my name was John Bennett and that his thoughts and actions were a result of my own brain! Weirdly, the words coming out of my mouth and the things I did in the story were not created by me at all! To make matters even more confusing, I am even dressed in fictional character John Bennett's costume (a costume is like fictional clothes) in this photograph that was taken on the television set and afterwards I went home to my apartment in New York City where I don't have a child because I'm not a father and have never worked in a prison and TV is not real life. #oitnb"

Haha. And yet, how sad that he'll probably continue to get "What the hell?!" tweets from fans who want answers from him on what the writers wrote for his character. But that's always how it works, as every villain and hero on TV could tell you. Not that Netflix is TV. Not really.

'Under the Dome' Season 3 Unites Julia and Big Jim to 'Fight the Enemy Within'

Posted:

Are you ready to go back "Under the Dome" -- and outside the Dome, around the corner from the Dome, or wherever CBS sends us next? Season 3 of the show that is really not following Stephen King's book at all anymore premieres this Thursday, June 25 at 9 p.m. with back-to-back episodes. In "Move On" and "But I'm Not," CBS says:

The residents of Chester's Mill appear both inside and outside the Dome following their mysterious encounter in the tunnels beneath the town. As the Dome begins to reveal its ultimate agenda, the townspeople are forced to question what and whom they can trust as fresh threats appear, new residents emerge and surprising alliances form."

On the new residents front, it looks like Marg Helgenberger will guest star as Christine Price, a Chester's Mill resident with insight into the Dome's origins, and Eriq La Salle guest stars as Hektor Martin, the ruthless CEO of the energy company run by Barbie's (Mike Vogel) father.

And on the "surprising alliances" front, TV Guide has some scoop on why (gasp!) Big Jim Rennie (Dean Norris) and Julia Shumway (Rachelle Lefevre) will actually be on the same side this season, even though she was last seen stabbing him to stop him from killing her. As UTD creator Neal Baer told TV Guide:

Julia and Big Jim become - I wouldn't say bosom buddies, but they certainly become allies against everyone. They unite against the enemy within. That's the theme of this season ... struggling to live under the dome and fight the enemy within. And it's not Big Jim."

The showrunner said this alliance is tied to who or what is really behind the Dome:

Big Jim and Julia really come to terms where he says, 'You've always said the Dome was here to protect us. You've always had faith in the Dome. You're wrong.' And Julia comes to see that maybe Big Jim is right."

Big Jim is right?! Don't tell him, it'll go straight to his ego. Are you coming along for the ride with this crazy train departs on Thursday?

Paul Walker's Daughter Shared the Sweetest Father's Day Photo

Italy Fast and Furious 5

Fans are still reeling from the November 2013 car crash death of "The Fast and the Furious" star Paul Walker, but that sadness pales next to the grief of his family. Paul left behind a daughter, the now 16-year-old Meadow, and yesterday she honored her dad with this touching throwback photo for Father's Day:

happy Father's Day

Isn't that adorable? Meadow's Instagram includes several pics of her father, including this one posted a few months ago:

And here's another one, from last September, on what would've been Paul's 41st birthday:

Happy Birthday, I love you

She just posts another beautiful reminder every so often. It's good that she has so many personal memories to look back on and share, beyond the movies that the fans can re-watch. Of course, we can also re-listen to the song "See You Again" from "Furious 7," since that was a tribute to the handsome star, who died at the too-young age of 40. It's still hard to believe he's gone.

'Lady and the Tramp': 19 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About the Disney Classic

Posted:

Since its release 60 years ago this week (on June 22, 1955), "Lady and the Tramp" has been not just one of the most beloved Disney animated features ever made, but also one of the great romances in screen history.

Still, as often as you've seen it, there's still plenty you may not know about how the canine classic came to be, So grab a plate of spaghetti and meatballs and chow down on 19 of "Lady"'s behind-the-scenes dish.
1. It took nearly 20 years to get the film made. The main character originated in sketches made by Disney animator Joe Grant in 1937, based on his own spaniel, whose name was Lady. Grant envisioned a short cartoon about a dog who's puzzled by the arrival of his masters' newborn baby.

2. By 1940, Walt Disney had imagined expanding the short into a feature and adding a dog-hating housesitter, two mischievous Siamese cats (then named Nip and Tuck), and a suitor for Lady, a mongrel who might be named Homer or Rags or Bozo. Unable to settle on a name for the wandering, homeless pooch, Walt decided to just go with Tramp.

3. In 1943, Walt read Ward Greene's short story "Happy Dan: The Cynical Dog" in Cosmopolitan magazine, the tale of a stray who revels in his ability to manipulate humans all over town into giving him free meals. Disney bought the film rights, but it took another eight years to merge the dog tales into the "Lady and the Tramp" screenplay.

4. In 1953, two years before the film's release, Walt had Greene expand his story into a novel, so that moviegoers would be familiar with the tale by the time the movie came out.

5. The scene where Darling opens a gift-wrapped hat box to find the puppy Lady inside is based on an incident from Walt Disney's own life, in which he presented his wife Lillian with the Christmas gift of a Chow puppy in a hat box.
6. Peggy Lee was perhaps the first major star to sign on as a voice actor in a Disney cartoon. The torch singer voiced the roles of Darling, pound hound Peg, and cats Si and Am. She also co-wrote all the songs (with Sonny Burke) and sang four of them ("What Is a Baby," "La La Lu," "The Siamese Cat Song," and "He's a Tramp").

7. In 1988, Lee sued Disney over music royalties from the successful video release. It took three years, but she won $2.3 million.

8. Barbara Luddy was 46 when she voiced the youthful Lady. She would go on to perform the voices of the fairy Merryweather in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" and Kanga in several of Disney's "Winnie the Pooh" shorts.

9. Lee Millar, who voiced Lady's master, Jim Dear, was the son of Verna Felton, who voiced the part of cat-loving visitor Aunt Sarah. She had earlier played the Fairy Godmother in Disney's "Cinderella" and the Queen of Hearts in the studio's "Alice in Wonderland."

10. Larry Roberts, who voiced Tramp, was a stage actor and stand-up comic. "Lady and the Tramp" was his only film role.

11. Other veteran voice artists were brought in from outside the studio. Alan Reed (later the voice of Fred Flintstone) was Boris, the Russian wolfhound. Comic Stan Freberg was the whistling beaver who frees Lady from her muzzle.
12. The iconic spaghetti scene almost didn't happen. Walt nixed the idea, assuming that the spectacle of two animals scarfing down pasta in tomato sauce would be messy and awkward. But animator Frank Thomas worked up a rough version of the scene that changed Disney's mind.

13. The model for Tramp was actually a female mutt that co-screenwriter Erdman "Ed" Penner spotted on the street. The dog vanished into the bushes, but Disney staffers ultimately found her again in the pound, where she was just four hours away from being put down. Once rescued, she lived happily ever after at the Disneyland pony farm.

14. Disney employees brought their dogs to the studios as models for the animators. One of the models for Lady was Felton's own Spaniel, Hildegarde. The other was Blondie, the spaniel of co-director Hamilton Luske.

15. "Lady and the Tramp" was the first animated feature shot in the widescreen CinemaScope format. It's still the widest cartoon Disney ever released in theaters.
16. The CinemaScope process meant that the film was essentially made twice: Once in the standard, nearly square aspect ratio, and once in widescreen, after Walt decided to try the new format that was expected to lure people away from those new square boxes in their living rooms. But Walt learned that many theaters were still not equipped to project CinemaScope movies, so he released both versions.

17. The movie cost $4 million to make. During its initial run, it earned $7.5 million. It was the studio's biggest hit since "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" 18 years earlier.

18. Since 1955, Disney has re-released "Lady" into theaters five times. Over the years, it's earned back $93.6 million in theaters

19. Lady and Tramp can both be spotted on a shadowy London street during the twilight-bark sequence in "101 Dalmatians."
