Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Film Face-Off of the day: Today is the 25th anniversary of the release of RoboCop 2, so it's fitting that there's a new video pitting RoboCop vs. The Terminator. In a rap battle (via Geek Tyrant):   Fan Film of the Day: Get out your tissues: Parkour athlete Mike Wilson made the following Spider-Man (er, Spider-Dad) short in honor of his Spidey-loving son who died in December (via Geek Tyrant):   Movie Mash-Up of the Day: We've seen Jurassic World's raptor taming scene influence zookeepers and Chris Pratt's latest children's hospital visit. We Tried to Survive 'Zombie Apocalypse Live' and Became Our Own Horror Movie Cliches

Posted: 22 Jun 2015 09:30 PM PDT

I watch a lot of horror movies. In fact, I watch so many horror movies that I've always assumed that I would survive if I was thrust into one. I know the tropes. I know the cliches. I know the template. Unless a filmmaker decides to throw a fairly crazy curve ball, I can call who will die next, why they will die, and what they should have done if they wanted to survive. I'm a total snob like that. So that's why I willingly decided to to enter the zombie apocalypse. Well, technically I participated in Zombie Apocalypse Live, a special event created by Thirteenth Floor, the company behind many of the nation's most lavish and high-end haunted house attractions. Now in its second year, the event transforms haunted houses, dormant for the non-Halloween season, into...

Ava DuVernay Directing 'Black Panther'? Beyonce in 'The Avengers'? How Likely are the Latest Superhero Movie Rumors?

Posted: 22 Jun 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Outside of the notable box office record-breakings, this month has been pretty slow for movie news. When this happens, rumors circulate very easily through the traffic-hungry movie blogosphere and fanboy social media channels. Most of them involve superheroes, both Marvel and DC variety. Below are the five most significant, which we've ranked in order of their plausibility. At the top is the one most likely to be true, and at the bottom is the most preposterous.  1. Ava DuVernay is Directing Black Panther The biggest rumor of them all comes via an unproven site called MCU Exchange. That doesn't mean they're not reputable, provided they got lucky with a source, but it's also possible they've made the claim up to get hits. The thing is, DuVernay signing...

Comics on Film: Could 'Batman Unchained' Have Saved Superhero Movies in the '90s?

Posted: 22 Jun 2015 06:30 PM PDT

Joel Schumacher is a name that lives in infamy with Batman fans around the world. Although the director of A Time to Kill and The Phantom of the Opera was primarily known for crafting darker movies in the mid-1990s, things changed when he was given the keys to the kingdom of DC Comics' Dark Knight.   After the somewhat polarizing reception to 1992's Batman Returns, Warner Bros. wanted to take the franchise in a bit of a different direction. Previous series director Tim Burton would transition into a producer capacity for the upcoming third film, and Schumacher was selected to direct what ultimately became 1995's Batman Forever. That film was the series' biggest financial success up to that point, so it...

Marvel Round-up: Who Owns the Hulk, a Potential Spider-Man Shows Off, and Chris Pratt's Charm Assault Continues

Posted: 22 Jun 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Who owns the Hulk A lot of fans have been wondering when we'd be getting a new Hulk movie, and while the answer isn't any more definitive today than it was last week, we at least know a few more details about who would actually be releasing the movie, if it were ever made. We already knew that Universal, who put out both the Eric Bana and Edward Norton Hulk movies, still held a claim to the character, but now Forbes is reporting that Universal only has the distribution rights to any hypothetical movies. Or, more specifically, Universal has the rights of first refusal, meaning that if Marvel does ever make another one, Universal gets to decide if they want to release it. And since Marvel movies make approximately a quadrillion dollars each, it's a pretty safe bet...

Joe Dante Reveals How Steven Spielberg Changed Gizmo's Fate in 'Gremlins'

Posted: 22 Jun 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Gizmo from Gremlins is one of the great, iconic creatures of cinema. He's as easily recognized as Frankenstein and as lovable as E.T. and it's all thanks to a movie that's edgy enough to hook in kids and adults alike. But, in some alternate reality, Gizmo may have traumatized kids. Director Joe Dante, who has the fun new horror comedy Burying the Ex out on VOD now, recently mentioned in a Reddit AMA that they originally had very different plans for Gizmo and that it was producer Steven Spielberg who pushed for the more family friendly mogwai we've all loved for decades. He was originally supposed to turn into Stripe, before Steven Spielberg took a shine to him and decreed he should be the hero's pal for the run of the story. That sent the FX people into...
