Leonard Nimoy's Son Seeks Help With Spock Documentary, and Time Is Running Out

Posted:

"Star Trek" icon Leonard Nimoy died this past February 27, and his son Adam is now fighting for the Spock doc they both wanted to live long and prosper.

The documentary, called "For the Love of Spock," has a Kickstarter page with a goal of $600,000. So far, 6,830 backers have pledged just under $490,000. The project will only be funded, it states, if $600K is pledged by Wednesday, July 1. That's less than a week away, so time is running out. Part of the deadline is due to the goal that both Adam and his father had of releasing the doc in time for the 50th anniversary of the original "Star Trek" series in 2016.

Here's Adam's description of how the campaign started:

Last year, just before Thanksgiving, I approached my dad, Leonard Nimoy, about the possibility of working together on a film about Mr. Spock. I had skimmed through some of the books on the making of Star Trek and felt there was so much more to explore about the birth and evolution of Spock. And the timing seemed right, as the 50th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series was not that far away. Dad agreed that now was the right time, and that he was 100% committed to collaborating with me on this project. He also reminded me that we were (then) just days away from the 50th anniversary of the start of production on "The Cage," the original pilot for Star Trek in which Dad first appeared as Mr. Spock.
Please participate in my Kickstarter campaign and help me complete a project that was important to my dad and has become extremely important to me.

Thanks again for your time and consideration.

In a video explaining his plans, Adam said he's already reached out to several key people in the "Star Trek" world who agreed to be featured on camera -- including William Shatner, George Takei and J.J. Abrams -- and modern Spock Zachary Quinto has agreed to narrate the movie.

Watch Adam's pitch for help and head to Kickstarter to get involved. (There are several cool rewards packages):

Here's the Theme of 'Downton Abbey' Season 6 in One Word

Posted:

The end is nigh, fellow "Downton Abbey" guests. After Season 6, there will be no more arch comments from Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess to tide us over, and no more opportunities to seethe as smug Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) takes another shot at poor Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael). (#TeamEdith4Life. Not sorry.) Season 6 premieres in the U.K. first, then in January on PBS in the U.S. Creator/writer Julian Fellowes talked to TheWrap about the new season, explaining why they decided to end the show in the 1920s instead of jumping into the 1930s, and discussing the major theme of the final season.

Here's part of that Q&A:

What were your priorities going into this past season?
Well, Season 4 was about Mary's redemption. That series was really about personal choice, about watching Mary decide to come alive again after her husband's death. Series 5, you're right, was much more to do with the fact that change was going to overtake them. And in Series 6, I would say, the theme is resolution.

Now, you can have different degrees of conclusion. In some stories, something can happen, that's the end of the story and everyone's either happy or unhappy. In other stories, you can suggest that in the afterlife of these characters, when they are only in the ether, this will work and this probably won't.

I don't think everything has to be tied up, but I think there are main themes that have to be tied up. I mean, I want you to finish the last episode feeling contented, and not feeling cheated. Sometimes in a movie the clever twist at the end just leaves you feeling cheated, and I don't want that."

So the theme is "resolution," which makes sense, and it sounds like he does want to resolve things, instead of dangling a lot of loose ends that leave us unsatisfied (like so many other series finales). He wants us to leave "feeling contented" and not "cheated." Dare we say a happy ending is coming?

Speaking of happy news, it looks like both Matthew Goode and Allan Leech are returning in Season 6. Matthew's Henry Talbot seems like Mary's potential long-term match and it'll be nice to see Tom Branson back, since it looked like he was leaving for America, aka leaving the show for good.

Are you excited for Season 6? Sad that it's ending? Frustrated that we have to wait until January?

Children 'Terrified' After Theater Plays 'Insidious' Instead of 'Inside Out'

Posted:

Anger. Disgust. Fear. Maybe some Joy at the irony. The "Inside Out" team would actually have a lot to work with in this true story of a movie theater accidentally playing the horror film "Insidious: Chapter 3" instead of the new Pixar title. Oops!

A woman in Middletown, Ohio, posted her story to the local news site's Facebook, saying she took five kids to the theater to see "Inside Out" and instead the theater played "Insidious." They both start with "Ins" so they're basically the same, right? Guess not. Once this lady and the other adults in the theater figured out they were watching the wrong movie, they rushed out and complained. A manager for the Danbarry Cinema confirmed to the Journal-News that an employee in the projection both accidentally played the wrong reel. The manager on duty apologized and everyone got a pass and an upgrade to watch the Disney movie in 3-D.

However, the complaining parent said, in her post, that "the damage is already done ... my children are terrified and keep asking questions." She took some heat for her complaints, once the story spread, and returned to Facebook to clarify that she wasn't suing anyone or asking for money, and defended her right to be mad about the error.

Here's part of her latest post:

All the previews were disney or kid friendly UNTIL right before the movie started which the preview for Sinister 2 (or 3) played. Which I immediately noticed was the wrong movie and as quickly as I could removed my kids and went to a Manager. ... Other parents and children were very upset and some weren't. ...Unfortunately a lot of people have made assumptions about me, my children and my parenting. Also there has been a ridiculous amount of people insulting me over this. Please stop being nasty and focus on the point.. This could have been prevented there needs to be a policy set in place or something to stop it from ever happening again anywhere. It is your opinion and your choice if you allow your children to watch horrors movie or not but I don't and guess what that's okay.. but I bought tickets and paid a good amount for popcorn and candy etc.. to see a Disney movie with my kids.. and Sinister popping up caught me and most of all my kids off guard. I am perfectly aware that horror movies are fake but the content in them are real. Murder is real. When you are a child your worst fear is something happening to your parents. That movie amplified that fear for my kids. So yes I am mad about and I have every right to be... So if it takes a bunch of people being upset with me to have a policy put in place to protect other kids too then so be it."

Yeah, from afar the whole thing is kinda funny, but it's understandable if she and her kids were upset by what happened and they don't deserve further insults from Internet trolls. But still. It is kinda funny, no?

'House of Cards' Season 4 Spoilers: New Couple to Rival Frank and Claire?

Posted:

_DSC7964.NEFNetflix's addictive political drama "House of Cards" ended Season 3 on a dramatic cliffhanger when it comes to President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) and First Lady to Leave a President Claire Underwood (Robin Wright). What's coming in 2016's Season 4?

TVLine just shared some intriguing scoop:

Word around the White House is that House of Cards Season 4 will introduce a couple who are the mirror image of Frank and Claire, only younger and (possibly) more British."

Hmmm. Sounds like they're going for something like the Blairs, if this couple does end up British. A British prime minister (or British anyone) couldn't directly threaten Frank's presidential campaign, but it sounds like maybe these two could be Team Underwood rivals, especially if their union is stronger than Frank's and Claire's. Then again, Frank and Claire are so competitive that this might prompt them to join forces again, as a reminder of how strong they were together. But we're getting ahead of the game; for all we know, this (possibly) British couple isn't meant to rival our duo, and the last we saw, there is no duo to rival.

"House of Cards" creator Beau Willimon talked to HuffPost Live last month, refusing to share spoilers but reminding us what's likely to be covered in Season 4:

All we know is that Claire said that she's leaving and we saw her walk out of that frame. So the big question is, 'What now?' If the marriage seems to be on the rocks ... the natural questions are, 'Are Frank and Claire going to get back together, or are they not?' 'What does it look like when they are not working together and is that what we're going to see?'"

Watch him talk about it:

Season 3 heavily hinted to Claire being a good candidate for president herself, even with her lack of experience. So we have to throw that into the mix, along with questions on the marriage and this new couple. And we're always questioning what's up with Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly), the most murderous Chief of Staff in history ... or so we hope.

Every season of "House of Cards" has premiered its 13 episodes in February, so we're expecting Season 4 to arrive in February 2016.

See Awesome Ways 'Game of Thrones,' Ian McKellen Celebrated Marriage Equality

Posted:

As Michael Moore put it, 'NEVER AGAIN will it be referred to as 'gay marriage'. It's now called 'marriage.' #SCOTUSMarriage." Amen!

Today is a historic day on that front, since a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling made same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states. Pretty much everyone -- famous or not -- has been reacting online, but some reactions are too good not to share. Here's the most adorable confetti celebration from actors Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi: Sir Ian also tweeted his own reaction: Bless him. And here's a great one from the official "Game of Thrones" account, referencing the character of Renly Baratheon, who was (secretly, but not so secretly) gay and in love with Ser Loras Tyrell, although he married Loras' sister Margaery because that's what he was expected to do: The best part of that one is the irony of welcoming more marriages on "Game of Thrones," a show known for killing and/or torturing people at weddings. But that's what equality is all about -- giving everyone an opportunity to be miserable with their spouse of choice. Congrats!

'Legend' Trailer Pours Double Shot of Tom Hardy as Gangster Twins

Posted:

If you've ever wanted to see Tom Hardy kick his own arse, "Legend" is the movie for you.

This British crime drama from Brian Helgeland (who wrote "L.A. Confidential") follows the Kray twins, who ruled the London underworld in the 1960s. As the new trailer explains, courtesy of Emily Browning, "Reggie was the gangster prince of the East End," and "Ron Kray was a one-man mob." Reggie and Ronnie are both played by Tom Hardy, and "Legend" shows how they became legends, but also clashed with their different styles. You can watch them throw punches at each other (that must've been fun to shoot) right here:
"Legend" also stars David Thewlis, Christopher Eccleston, Chazz Palminteri, Tara Fitzgerald, and Taron Egerton and it's scheduled for an October 2 release.

Ryan Reynolds Drops the C-Word on Himself in Ryan Gosling Comparison

Posted:

2015 Sundance Film Festival - This might actually qualify as an audition for "Game of Thrones" Season 6. Heaven knows they drop the c-word like candy from a piñata -- and Arya could use a new partner in crime on that front. Either way, Ryan Reynolds has our attention, for unexpected reasons. And here's a lesson for you: If you tweet about a celebrity, without even tweeting to them directly, they may reply anyway.

One fan (or non-fan) just announced online that she didn't know the difference between Ryan Gosling and Ryan Reynolds. She didn't even seem to be hating, just sort of letting us know they are interchangeable in her mind.

France Cannes Lost River Photo Call
Totally understandable, even if that's not our personal celeb confusion crisis. (The Chrises. It's the Chrises for us.) But cue Ryan Reynolds with a NSFW reply on how one can tell the difference between himself and "The Notebook" alum:

Well! The more you know -- cue the NBC logo! Actually, this might be a good time for a "Hey, girl" meme from Feminist Ryan Gosling, reminding us that the c-word is non-progressive.

Watch Two New 'Fear the Walking Dead' Premiere Clips: Missing Posters, 'Virus' Talk

Posted:

Last week, AMC shared a "Fear the Walking Dead" teaser of Nick running from stuff and things. Yesterday, they shared a "Walking Dead" spinoff clip of a teenager trying to warn Kim Dickens' high school guidance counselor Madison that a virus of some kind has been spreading across five states and "people are killing." And today AMC just shared another brief clip of Madison in the car with Cliff Curtis's Travis as they drive past missing posters and see a suspicious shuffler in a park.

So we may be getting these new teases -- posted as "trailers" by AMC but they are not really trailers -- pretty regularly before the August premiere.

Here are the two most recent teases:

You can't really blame Madison for blowing off that kid, even if trusting the authorities is always a laughable idea. Our response would've been, "Nice try, but your trig homework is still due tomorrow." But "Fear" is going to test our patience like this and prompt many viewers to consider the characters dumb for not knowing what we only know because we watched "The Walking Dead" -- that this "virus" is actually the zombie apocalypse (not that we'll be calling them zombies) and they're all infected. But it would be stupid for a high school guidance counselor to be like "Oh my God, sound the alarm - the world is ending!" just because, for once, what seemed like paranoia was really prescience.

This "Fear" beast is stopping by in August, but AMC has yet to say exactly when in August. We're on standby for more of these non-trailer teases from Season 1, Episode 1, and we'd love an actual trailer for the full season -- which is only six episodes, but still. Next year we'll get a longer Season 2. Meanwhile, Season 6 of the mothership show is arriving in October, as usual, and we can expect a lot more info on both "Walking Dead" shows during San Diego Comic-Con in July. That should be when we get the long TWD Season 6 trailer and perhaps that's when we'll get a legit FTWD trailer too.

Jared Leto Sent Creepy Gifts to His 'Suicide Squad' Co-Stars

Posted:

Jared Leto is treating his role as The Joker as no laughing matter, as one of his "Suicide Squad" costars revealed that the Oscar winner has taken a very method -- and frankly, very creepy -- approach to the character.

Adam Beach, who plays Slipknot in "Squad," chatted with E! News about some of Leto's odd behavior while filming the flick, and said that when Leto initially couldn't be with the rest of the cast when production commenced, the actor made his presence known.

"He sent [Margot Robbie] a nice love letter with a black box with a rat in it-a live rat," Beach told E!. " ... Then he sent bullets to Will [Smith] with a letter."

In addition to those odd tokens, according to Beach, Leto also sent his castmates a dead hog (?!?), as well as an in-character video message wishing them well.

"It blew our minds away," Beach said of Leto-as-The Joker. "Then we realized that day, this is real."

Beach added that Leto kept up the ruse in person, too, and said that the actor seemed like a perfect -- if unsettling -- fit for the part.

"He encompasses this beautiful man and he shows it in, 'Hello, how are you?,' but in an instant, he goes to psychotic behavior where you're in fear," Beach told E!. "But you love him because he has both of those genuine sides."

Sounds spooky -- and just what this character calls for. We can't wait to see Leto's performance for ourselves.

"Suicide Squad" is due in theaters on August 5, 2016.

Jimmy Fallon Is in the Hospital, Recovering From Hand Surgery

Posted:

Scott Eastwood Visits UPDATE: TMZ has updated its initial report about Fallon's injury, which we've also updated in our story below. Read on for the full report.

Jimmy Fallon is recovering from hand surgery at a New York City hospital following an undisclosed injury that occurred at his home on Friday morning.

TMZ broke the news, and initially reported that Fallon was in the intensive care unit, though that information has since been corrected. A rep for the "Tonight Show" host told the site that Fallon injured his hand at his apartment early Friday, and went to see a specialist, who recommended that the comedian have surgery immediately.

Fallon is currently recuperating at the hospital, and his rep told TMZ that he's expected to make a full recovery. The Friday taping of "The Tonight Show" was cancelled, and the show confirmed the news in a tweet.

"He's totally fine," the account said of Fallon, "but we'll be airing a repeat." Audience members were instructed to wait for word on how to reschedule their tickets.
Here's hoping the host has a speedy recovery.

Could Your Favorite TV Show Become a Broadway Musical?

Posted:

Given all the musicals we've seen on TV recently -- NBC's live-performance versions of "Peter Pan" and "The Sound of Music," not to mention ABC's "Galavant" and all six seasons of Fox's "Glee" -- it's a wonder that the pipeline hasn't flowed in the opposite direction, from the small screen to Broadway.

That may change with the announcements that a couple of TV-based musicals are in the works. One is "Bombshell," the Marilyn Monroe biographical musical that was created and staged over the course of two seasons on NBC's "Smash." Bringing it to Broadway would seem easy enough -- the songs and choreography already exist; all that's needed is a book.

The other is a stage version of "Downton Abbey," which may launch after the British drama's sixth and final season wraps this winter. John Lunn, who composes the music for the series, says he envisions an international tour, starring the TV cast and writer/creator Julian Fellowes as a narrator, along with some period music you might hear on the Crawleys' gramophones (Elgar, 1920s jazz).

Are these even aa good idea? "Smash" wasn't exactly a hit series (it ran from 2012-13), so it's not clear that there's much of a market for a "Smash"-derived musical. On the other hand, the songs were more popular than the show, and anything with Monroe's name in it ought to be a big seller.

The "Downton" show doesn't sound much more promising, though anyone who watched their hilarious guest spots on "Galavant" knows that Hugh Bonneville (Lord Grantham) and Sophie McShera (kitchen maid Daisy) can sing. Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Cora) has fronted her own rock band, Sadie and the Hotheads. Who knows if Maggie Smith can sing or dance, but who wouldn't pay money to see her try?

Still, the fact that these TV series are even being pondered as possible stage musicals probably says more about the current desperation of Broadway than it does about TV. After all, Broadway commonly adapts books, movies, straight plays, pop stars' back catalogs, and even comic books into musicals, yet TV adaptations are as rare on Broadway as belters whose voices can reach the back row without body mics.

Among the handful of TV series that have made it to the stage is "The Addams Family" (the 2010 Broadway musical purports to be based on the Charles Addams cartoons that were also the inspiration for the 1960s sitcom, but it's clear that the characterizations owe pretty much everything to the TV show and the movies it spawned). Some British shows have been adapted as straight plays, including "Yes, Prime Minister" and "Doctor Who" (which has spawned at least three plays over the past 50 years).

Back in 1992, Jill Soloway mounted a touring production called "The Real Live Brady Bunch," which staged tongue-in-cheek performances of individual "Brady Bunch" episodes. Soloway would go on to become a top TV writer/producer herself ("Six Feet Under," "Transparent"). The show featured Melanie Hutsell as Jan Brady (a character she would reprise on TV after she joined the cast of "Saturday Night Live") and, as Mike and Carol Brady, a pre-fame Andy Richter ("Conan") and Jane Lynch ("Glee"). Speaking of "Glee," back when the "Glee" cast first went on a concert tour five years ago, there was a rumor that the show's creators were developing a stage musical version as well, but it never happened. But the two tours at least featured the TV cast performing in character.

It's clear why TV hasn't been a wellspring for stage adaptations: it's hard to cram a lengthy TV series into a 2 1/2- hour show. And there may be a psychological barrier, for both producers and audiences, in coming to terms with an expensive stage adaptation of something you can watch every night for free (or almost free), in syndicated reruns or binge-watched as part of your streaming subscription.

Nonetheless, it seems like more TV-to-Broadway adaptations are inevitable. Not only is Broadway always hungry for new material with brand recognition, but it's also spent the last decade or so getting a number of its most popular performers from TV. "American Idol," in particular, has been a strong source of Broadway talent, with the likes of Fantasia Barrino, Clay Aiken, Jordin Sparks, Justin Guarini, Frenchie Davis, Constantine Maroulis, Taylor Hicks, Ace Young, Diana DeGarmo, Syesha Mercado, and Crystal Bowersox all using their Fox-bred fame to sell musical theater tickets. "The Voice" Season 6 winner Josh Kaufman went straight to the Broadway musical stage last year, starring in a revival of "Pippin."

With TV creating the next generation of Broadway musical stars, it seems it's only a matter of time before the medium generates the shows themselves. The secret seems to be using shows that can be spun off into self-contained stories. Shorn of "Smash"'s backstage drama about its creation, "Bombshell" works in that respect, "Downton Abbey," which has always been more about character interaction than plot, could also come up with a brief storyline that doesn't require a lot of character evolution or elaborate plot developments. And there's no reason a musical couldn't use the "Doctor Who" or "Brady Bunch" model and offer just a single episodic story from the show's familiar lore.

A stage adaptation of "Glee" or "Galavant" could certainly work, though it's likely that more nostalgia-minded titles would sell more tickets. Imagine a musical version of "Frasier," a show that often borrowed from the structure and timing of door-slamming stage farce. And if "Doctor Who" works, why not "Star Trek: The Musical"? Now that "Seinfeld" is all over Hulu, why not Broadway? They could serve Junior Mints and slices of marble rye at intermission. (But not Pez.) It's Tony gold, Jerry, Tony gold!

'Saved by the Bell' Star Dustin Diamond Sentenced to 4 Months in Jail for Stabbing

Posted:

People Dustin DiamondFormer "Saved By the Bell" star Dustin Diamond is set to spend four months in jail after he stabbed another man in a barroom fight late last year.

People reports that Diamond was formally sentenced on Thursday in connection with the incident, which occurred on Christmas Day 2014 at a bar in Wisconsin. According to People, the fight was reportedly started after a woman bumped into Diamond's girlfriend at the bar, leading to a chaotic brawl in which a man was stabbed by Diamond; the victim testified that he realized he had been stabbed and was bleeding after he left the bar.

Diamond was convicted in May of one count each of carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors. He was cleared of a felony charge of recklessly endangering public safety.

"I sincerely apologize to everyone involved," Diamond said at his sentencing hearing on Thursday. "This was the single most terrifying experience of my life ... This is all I've been able to think about for the last six months."

Diamond, who was also sentenced to 15 months of probation, will report to jail on Sunday.

More 'Harry Potter' Is Coming! J.K. Rowling Announces Play 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'

Posted:

Harry Potter Play to Hit London Stage Next Year
The day that "Harry Potter" fans have dreamed of for years is finally here: J.K. Rowling announced early Friday morning that there's a new story in the works featuring The Boy Who Lived, and it's set to become a stage play in London next year.

Rowling revealed the news on Twitter, writing that "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" would be a brand-new tale involving an "untold part of Harry's story." Though the author declined to provide any specific details about the play -- other than saying that it is "not a prequel" -- she did say that the work would be "a real treat for fans."

The announcement was timed to the 18th anniversary of the release of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (a.k.a. "Sorcerer's Stone" to American audiences) in the U.K., which snowballed into a blockbuster seven-book and eight-movie series that has enchanted fans the world over. As for why Rowling didn't just write another "Potter" novel featuring "the Cursed Child," the author said, "I am confident that when audiences see the play they will agree that it was the only proper medium for the story."

Rowling is working with what she called a "dream team" of collaborators on the project: writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany, and producer Sonia Friedman. According to BBC News, those creatives previously indicated that the play would focus on Harry's years as orphan living with the Dursleys, as well as life with his parents before they were killed by Voldemort; it's unclear if that's still the direction of "Cursed Child," based on Rowling's comments about the play not being a prequel.

"Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" is slated to open in London's famous West End district at the Palace Theater sometime in the summer of 2016. Tickets are expected to go on sale this fall.

Hiro Returns in the New 'Heroes Reborn' Trailer

Posted:

hiro, heroes rebornYet another new trailer for "Heroes Reborn" is here, and this time, there's plenty of action.

Unlike the last teaser, which offered only a bleak look at a world in disarray following the disappearance of our titular saviors, this new promo promises that that's all about to change -- somewhat, anyway. We get close glimpses of new characters (including those played by Zachary Levi and Kiki Sukezane) as well as familiar faces (Jack Coleman and Masi Oka), and lots of fast-paced shots of fights, gunplay, and angsty teenagers.

The return of Oka's Hiro is saved for the end of the promo, and he's a sight for sore eyes after so many years off the air. It seems he may be playing more of a mentor role this time around as a new crop of Heroes are trained, though the specifics are unclear for now.

"It doesn't matter how ordinary you think you are," the new wave of aspiring recruits are told in the clip. "We all have the potential to be heroes."

That potential will be realized when "Heroes Reborn" debuts on September 24 on NBC. Until then, check out the trailer below.

Best of Late Night TV: Mark Wahlberg's Headshots and Jason Schwartzman's Prosthetic Penis

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Oh, "The Tonight Show." So many hijinks, so little time! Last night, Mark Wahlberg (or as we like to call him Marky Mark) stopped by to play a game of Headshots with Jimmy Fallon, which basically consisted of them shooting arrows at each other's faces. What's not to love?

Jada Pinkett Smith is the luckiest woman in the world thanks to staring in the new installment of "Magic Mike" (best job ever), and she admitted to Jimmy Kimmel that she couldn't stop touching Matt Bomer on set. It's understandable.

Bella Thorne visited "Late Night," where she was asked a super important question about her career: how to take the perfect selfie. Kim Kardashian who?

Finally, Adam Scott and Jason Schwartzman swung by "Conan," and wasted no time talking about the prosthetic penises (peni?) they wore for "The Overnight." Stop everything you're doing and watch this immediately. And note: NSFW (unless your job is cool with you looking at naked men on the computer).
