DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 10 Jun 2015 09:00 PM PDT

New Indie: The current wave of screen musicals – from Moulin Rouge! and Chicago to Les Misérables and Into the Woods — favors the grand and the splashy, but there’s no rule that says the genre has to include towering sets and hundreds of backup dancers. For a more stripped-down but still potent musical, check out the bittersweet romance The Last Five Years (Anchor Bay/Radius-TWC), starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan as our guides through the beginning, middle and end of a relationship. The movie’s showiest gimmick is its timeline – actress Cathy (Kendrick) begins the movie after the breakup, and then in the next scene, author Jamie (Jordan) has just fallen in love with Cathy. She moves through the film backward and he forward, until they...

Pizza Hut Now Has a Delivery Box That Turns Into a Movie Projector

Posted: 10 Jun 2015 07:30 PM PDT

Pizza and movies go together like, well, pizzas and movies. Combinations basically don't get better than that. But what if between the time you order pizza and the time it arrives, your TV explodes and you have nothing to stare at while you shovel food into your mouth? Don't worry, the mad scientists at Pizza Hut have got you covered. As long as you live in China, at least. A marketing firm there has created a special "Blockbuster Box" for the pie pedlars that comes with a lens that takes an ordinary smartphone and turns it into a movie projector. We're guessing it's going to drain your battery faster than it takes for you to actually finish watching a movie this way, but hey, it's a pretty nifty novelty. At the very least, it's more...

The Director of 'Project Almanac' Talks Time Travel, Going From Assistant to Director, 'Power Rangers' and More

Posted: 10 Jun 2015 05:45 PM PDT

If you like time travel movies, then you're kind of obligated to see Project Almanac, which hits Blu-ray, DVD, and DigitalHD this week. It's about a group of nerdy high school friends who uncover plans for a time machine that one of their father's never lived long enough to actually build. So, naturally, they build it. And it works. But, as you can probably guess, giving some teens the power of time travel is not a great idea, and soon it becomes a matter of fixing the mess they've created by defying space and time. Project Almanac is a fun, slick, entertaining entry in the time travel genre, and it was the directorial debut of a one Dean Israelite. Unless you were familiar with one of his short films before this, you probably don't know his name. But you...

New 'Regression' Trailer: Ethan Hawke Saves Emma Watson From a Satanic Cult in the '80s

Posted: 10 Jun 2015 04:00 PM PDT

Update 6/10/15: The first American trailer is now online. Find it below. Previously: You may recall that Regression was on our list of "2015 Movies That Need to Be on Your Radar." The reason it was on there was simple: Alejandro Amenábar (Thesis, Open Your Eyes, The Others, The Sea Inside) has yet to make a bad movie, and Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson meant the cast was sure to be reliable as well. But when we put Regression on that list, we hadn't seen a trailer, or even stills, from the movie. We were going off the talent involved and the vague premise that it was about a father who is facing jail for committing a crime he has no memory of. Now that we've seen the actual trailer, it's rocketed even further up our list of most anticipated...

Watch a Version of 'Blade Runner' Made Up of Deleted Scenes and Alternate Takes

Posted: 10 Jun 2015 03:00 PM PDT

When Blade Runner opened 23 years ago this month, nobody expected it to be the phenomenon it's become. Especially after its disappointing performance at the box office. Yet here we are, anxiously awaiting a sequel to the sci-fi masterpiece with Harrison Ford returning, possibly opposite Ryan Gosling, with original director Ridley Scott producing and one of today's most exciting filmmakers, Denis Villeneuve, at the helm. Here we are in near-universal acceptance of it being a classic, one of the most influential movies ever made and, to get personal, one of my own favorites of all time.   But when we talk about Blade Runner being such a great movie, which version are we talking about? There's the original theatrical cut with the Marlowe-style voiceover, plus a...
