The Geek Beat: Avengers Adventures, Star Wars Shades, 'Archie vs. Predator,' and More to Look For In April

Posted: 09 Apr 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Okay, so last week's column departed from the usual monthly guides to new geekery hitting shelves (and theaters) by being, well... completely fictional. Now that April Fools Day is in the rearview mirror, though, it's time to get back to the serious business of bringing attention to some of the movie-related merch you'll want to look out for this month. While April is a relatively quiet month for sci-fi, fantasy, and superhero fare hitting the big and small screens (with the exception of one very big sequel), there are some notable comics and collectibles available now or arriving soon to keep you occupied. As you might expect with Avengers: Age of Ultron hitting theaters next month, Marvel has a few options for Avengers fans, while this month also sees the month of...

The Last Sci-Fi Blog: What to Watch Before This Summer's Blockbuster Movies

Posted: 09 Apr 2015 07:30 PM PDT

The temperature is getting warming. The sun is shining a little brighter. The movies are getting bigger. A lot bigger. Yeah, you know what that means: it's time for summer. While this year's science fiction slate isn't quite as jam-packed as last year (which was a high point for the genre), there are a handful of movies that should be on any sci-fi fan's radar hitting in the next few months. And that means it's time to do your homework! Before you rush out and to check out the latest blockbusters, make sure you're in the right frame of mind. Make sure you're the smartest guy in the theater. All it takes is a couple of little movie marathons.   Mad Max: Fury Road This one is obvious enough -- go watch the other three Mad Max movies! However...

Marvel Studios Countdown: How 'Daredevil' is Unlike Anything Marvel Has Done So Far

Posted: 09 Apr 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Daredevil is unlike anything Marvel Studios has done. We got a look at the first five episodes of the 13-part season, and it’s nothing like the Marvel Studios films nor the spin-off shows from ABC. This is great news. This is a low-key, performance-driven crime drama, where the episodes don’t follow a tidy formula nor aim to move Daredevil kids meal toys. It’s street-level and human and it’s going to make a lot of fans of “ol hornhead” very, very happy. Daredevil, missing the luxury of a $200 million budget like its big-screen peers, is shot like an indie crime film (or a low-budget horror movie -- lots of darkened rooms with one sickly amber key light) and makes the best use of its greatest resource, a talented cast. All of the players, from...

Update: Full 'Sinister 2' Trailer Breaks Out the Freaky Home Movies

Posted: 09 Apr 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Update: Find the full trailer below. Horror movies can be a very complicated business for the very simple reason that fear is always so subjective. One person can see something and it barely elevates their heart rate, but that same movie can cause someone else to lose sleep for days on end. Having said that, we can all agree the first Sinister is genuinely scary, right? Even if the story of a crime novelist who moves his family into a murdered family's house so that he can write his big comeback book doesn't get to you, director Scott Derrickson's scares are so well crafted they have to earn some kind of physiological response while watching them. They just have to, and I suspect anyone who says otherwise is a bit of a fibber. Now having said all of that, Sinister...

Here's the Brilliant 'It Follows' Sequel Idea That Makes Us Want to See It Happen

Posted: 09 Apr 2015 03:15 PM PDT

It Follows isn't just one of the best horror movies of the year, but it's also one of the indie success stories of the year. The initial box office numbers for this small indie about a sexually transmitted haunting were so encouraging, distributor Radius-TWC called off a planned VOD release and decided to turn it into a wide theatrical release. $9 million later and it's safe to say that, for its scale, It Follows is a hit. Hell, it's already grossed more than studio movies like Blackhat and Mortdecai. That's impressive, especially considering the marketing push for the movie has been as minimal as possible. And of course when you see numbers like that, a sequel comes to mind. Tom Quinn, the head of Radius-TWC and one of the people who changed...

First Look at The Thing in 'Fantastic Four' Clobbers Its Way Online

Posted: 09 Apr 2015 01:45 PM PDT

The new reboot of Fantastic Four has been playing very coy with all of their marketing so far, which is a little surprising considering the movie comes out in less than four months. Sure, there have been teaser posters and trailers, but they haven't really shown off the goods. We haven't had any grand money shots of what Mr. Fantastic's stretching looks like or how The Invisible Woman will, uh, not look. But at least today we can cross one of the heroes off the list. Empire Online has revealed a trio of new images from Josh Trank's film, including the first clear look at Ben Grimm, AKA The Thing, played by Jamie Bell. If you can't tell, he is a CGI creation, and if that's a surprise then you must not have read our chat with the motion capture master Terry...

Jared Leto was not present; the movie is due in theaters on August 5, 2016. [Dark Horizons / Slash Film]   Pinocchio: Disney's Pinocchio will be developed as a live-action movie, joining a parade of classic animated films that will aim to replicate the success of the studio's Maleficent and Cinderella.
