8 Brainy Science Fiction Movies to Watch After 'Ex Machina'

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 09:00 PM PDT

For a genre that's so often about pushing the boundaries of the imagination, sci-fi movies aren't always actually, you know, smart. So when a movie like Ex Machina comes along, it's a cause for celebration. A small movie with big ambitions, Alex Garland's film follows a technological genius (Oscar Isaac) who hires one of his employees (Domhnall Gleeson) to conduct a Turing Test on the sentient robot he's just built. As you'd imagine, things don't go well. Since Ex Machina is probably going to leave you thirsting for more brainy science fiction films, we've put together a list of required viewing for the days afterward. Each of these films, either in theme, concept or scope, have some kind of connection to Ex Machina, so pick the angle that you like...

Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' Rumbles Back to Life at Sony

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 08:00 PM PDT

The word epic gets tossed around a lot these days, but one series that truly earns the word is Stephen King's The Dark Tower. It's a massive, sprawling, complex, funny, tragic, horrifying, and heroic story of gunslinger Roland Deschain's quest for the fabled Dark Tower. It's got a killer ensemble of characters, some stunning imagery, and a very special brand of fantasy that is a unique combination of the old west, magic, technology and interdimensional travel. So of course it's ripe for a big screen adaptation. The trouble is, however, that the book series is so epic, it's going to take a massive commitment to the source material to really pull it off, and so far no studio has pulled the trigger on the production. But now it seems that Sony has decided...

Watch John Goodman Discuss His Devilishly Good Dialogue In This 'The Gambler' Clip (Exclusive)

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 07:00 PM PDT

Rupert Wyatt's remake of The Gambler arrived in theaters last Christmas without a big splash, and I think it was just the timing. It's a very good movie, one of the most underrated of 2014, but it couldn't compete with the awards contenders of that season. Well, there was some buzz from myself and others about John Goodman deserving a Best Supporting Actor nod. He's definitely the best part of the movie, which stars Mark Wahlberg as an author and college professor who is addicted to making unwise bets at the blackjack table. Goodman plays Frank, one of the loan sharks that Wahlberg's character must deal with after his debts to a gambling house owner and another loan shark get out of hand. He doesn't have a lot of scenes, but those appearances have a lot of...

'Aquaman' Wants 'Furious 7' Director James Wan

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 05:30 PM PDT

Last October Furious 7 director James Wan signed a first-look deal with New Line Cinema (owned by Warner Bros.), giving the studio the first crack at new projects Wan's company would be developing. When that announcement was made, though, it included a particularly noteworthy quote from studio head Toby Emmerich:  “James will make an important movie for New Line and Warner Bros or DC, and that is definitely part of the plan, and a reason for bringing him into the family. He’s the only overall director with a deal here, because we see him as a class of one.” At the time, we theorized that the "or DC" meant that Wan was being considered for Shazam. Not only had that project cast Dwayne Johnson, who Wan had just directed in Furious 7, but it was...

Comics on Film: Why We're Excited for Vision in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 04:00 PM PDT

We’re now just a few weeks away from the theatrical release of Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated team-up sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, and excitement over the film is starting to hit a fever pitch. In addition to returning Avengers Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye, we’ll also be introduced to the likes of Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and, of course, Ultron himself. Those last few, though, aren’t the only ones making their Marvel Studios film debut. Many fans have felt that a certain Avenger was missing, and even though he’s technically an artificial lifeform, a lot of fans see him as the heart and soul of the team. I’m talking of course about the...

Hurray! Google Patents a Way to Protect You From Movie and TV Spoilers

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Imagine a world where you didn't have to watch Game of Thrones this weekend exactly the moment it airs on HBO and could even enjoy Twitter during that time block without concern for spoilers being live-tweeted by your friends. That utopian dream is to come true thanks to Google, which patended a system this week that will block spoilers on social media and in its online searches.  No more pressure to binge watch Netflix shows! No more worry that if you can't catch Avengers: Age of Ultron on opening weekend that the credits sequence will be revealed within the first three days of its release. Or worry that critics attending advance screenings will get too chatty in your feed about what they've just seen a month before you are even able to. The service makes me...

Movie News: Ryan Gosling in Guillermo del Toro's 'Haunted Mansion'; New 'Jurassic World' Photo and First Clip

Posted: 10 Apr 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Haunted Mansion: Ryan Gosling is in talks to star in Disney's Haunted Mansion, to be directed by Guillermo del Toro. The project has been in development for nearly five years; D.V. DeVincentis (High Fidelity) is currently working on a new draft of the screenplay for what's described as a "supernatural family film." [The Wrap]   The Flash: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who teamed to write and direct The Lego Movie, among others, will next "flesh out the story" for The Flash. Ezra Miller is set to star as the speedy DC superhero. Earlier this week, we heard that Lord and Miller were under consideration to direct either this project or a new installment in the Ghostbusters series, but we're still awaiting word on that decision. [The...
