The Geek Beat: Is 'Daredevil''s Success Good or Bad for the Marvel Movie-verse?

Posted: 16 Apr 2015 11:00 PM PDT

So let's get one thing straight before I get into this week's column: I enjoyed the heck out of Daredevil, the new Netflix series set in Marvel's Cinematic Universe. I liked it so much I watched all 13 hour-long episodes in the time between when I woke up Friday morning and when I finally went to sleep Saturday night. That's the most concentrated “binge-watching” I've ever engaged in, and it's a testament to the quality of the series. Now that we've got that out of the way... In the time since I finished watching Daredevil, a thought occurred to me that I can't seem to shake. After seeing with my own eyes (pun totally intended) how great a Marvel Studios project aimed at adult audiences can be, have I been spoiled for the...

'The Gallows' Teaser: Get a Glimpse at the Next Terrifying Found Footage Movie

Posted: 16 Apr 2015 08:35 PM PDT

There are some things that will never get old or any less frightening. Proof is in the new teaser trailer for The Gallows, the latest horror flick from Blumhouse Productions, which previously gave us Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister, The Purge, Oculus and Whiplash. There's no denying the tension and terror provoked by what's simply a clip of a young woman crying and a mysterious figure barely emerging from the darkness to ultimately drag that woman to her doom. Watch it below. The decision to go with a clip like this is rather smart, as it doesn't bother to set up a story or show any good times before the darkness falls. We're immediately scared, or we at least we get to experience the tone of this movie's horrors. It also offers some mystery. You...

Ryan Gosling to Star Alongside Harrison Ford in 'Blade Runner 2'

Posted: 16 Apr 2015 07:16 PM PDT

One of the most iconic science fiction movies ever made is getting a sequel... and it's also getting a little Ryan Gosling, too. Gosling has signed on to star alongside Harrison Ford in Blade Runner 2, which will be directed by Denis Villenueve (Prisoners) and take place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 film, directed by Ridley Scott. The first film was set in a dystopian version of the year 2019, and it looked a little something like this. Ford will reprise the role of Rick Deckard, and as of now plot details are being kept under wraps, though we imagine it will further tell the story of a future involving human clones and the threat they pose to all of humanity. Here's a trailer to refresh your memory. Blade Runner 2 currently does not...

Hold onto your lightsabers (or should we say trisabers?) folks – the new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is here and it’s a gloriously geeky thing of beauty. Watch it below. The trailer, which gives us our first look at returning Star Wars icons like Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) -- with the voice of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) --- debuted during a panel for the film being held at the annual Star Wars fan convention, Star Wars Celebration. Oh, and there's a ton of new footage, including a fresh look at the new Stormtroopers, our lead villain and all of the new characters, played by Daisy Ridley (Ren), Oscar Isaac (Poe) and John Boyega (Finn). And if you look closely, you may even see Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader...

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Poster Art: Is This Our First Look at Who Was Holding That Trisaber?

Posted: 16 Apr 2015 01:00 PM PDT

Star Wars Celebration is about to kickoff this morning (learn how to watch it all here), which means we're hours away from the world getting its next big look at what J.J.Abrams has been up to with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But before his panel with Lucasfilm head Kathlen Kennedy starts, the Internet has already been taken by storm with images, some official, some unofficial. We can't confirm yet where the below are coming from, so take them with a grain of salt for now, but we may have just given us our first look at who was holding that trisaber in the teaser trailer. As you can see in the below images from Star Wars Underworld, the person holding it, who we already know is called Kylo Ren, wears a pretty gnarly metal mask, complete with what looks like a black...

Movie News: 'Wonder Woman' Director Found; Zack Snyder Teases 'Batman v Superman' Trailer

Posted: 16 Apr 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Wonder Woman: Following the unfortunate depature of Michelle MacLaren as director of Wonder Woman due to creative differences, Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment made a remarkably quick substitution by hiring Patty Jenkins for the gig. Jenkins was once attached to direct Thor: The Dark World but left due to creative differences. Her last and only feature is 2003's Monster. [THR]   Captain Marvel: Many fans of the MCU are now hoping that MacLaren fully defects to the enemy and takes on Captain Marvel, but there's also been rumor going around for a while that Marvel Studios is eyeing Angelina Jolie for the job. Now there's confirmation that she is in serious consideration for the female superhero movie. She was also said to be up for Wonder Woman, but that idea...
