Posted: 23 Apr 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   With Avengers: Age of Ultron coming out in a week, you'll want to recap the entire MCU franchise with this comprehensive seven-minute video (via Design Taxi):   See Jurassic World star Chris Pratt compete against six-year-old viral video sensation Noah Ritter (the "apparently" kid) in a dinosaur quiz (via THR):   Want to buy that crashed Star Destroyer seen in the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer? Someone posted this ad on Craigslist (via World Wide Interweb):   Speaking of new Star Wars movies, this is either a photo of some guy wearing a Death Star schmatics Hawaiian shirt or our first look at the climax of Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One...

The Last Sci-Fi Blog: The Optimism of New 'Star Wars' and 'Star Trek'

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 10:00 PM PDT

Here's the thing about being a genre film fan: you have to grow a thick skin. It's slightly easier for horror fans, who are bombarded with so much junk on a daily basis that they're more bemused by a bad film than offended. It's far more difficult for fantasy fans, who get a new movie every once in a blue moon and it's usually something abysmal like Seventh Son. Science fiction fans fall somewhere in the middle. We have a lot to love, both in the past and the present, but it's so easy to get under our skin, no matter how thick it is. We tell ourselves that the Star Wars prequels didn't hurt, but oh boy, did they hurt. We rush to the internet to complain about Star Trek Into Darkness because we know more people will see one of the worst Star Trek movies...

Watch: M. Night Shyamalan Returns to Freaking You Out in First Trailer for 'The Visit'

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 09:29 PM PDT

Proving that you're not the only one with weird grandparents, M. Night Shyamalan's new movie looks like a creepy small-scale thriller that definitely carries with it a typical Shyamalan-like mystery, but everything about it feels fresh and adequately freaky. Check out the first trailer for The Visit below. So what's the deal with this movie? Last year Shyamalan made an effort to get back to his thriller past by shooting a movie entirely in secret. It's called The Visit and he self-financed and shot it around his house in Pennsylvania with no fanfare whatsoever. And then when he had the movie in the can, he showed it to producer Jason Blum so that he could partner with Blumhouse (Sinister, Ouija) and get it in front of a big studio. Now Universal Pictures...

Comics on Film: Why the Darker Tone in 'Batman v Superman' Is a Good Thing

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 09:00 PM PDT

Warner Bros. has finally given us a first look at next year's superhero showdown Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. A moment that many were hoping would be a joyful one was a bit sour for some fans who thought the tone was too dark and depressing for the modern-day superhero movie. Now that fans have largely gotten used to the Marvel Studios formula, which generally includes a great deal of levity (read: fun) interspersed with heavy doses of superheroic action, were instead treated to a trailer that looks very dark, dour, mysterious, and heavy.  But that's a good thing. When it comes to a movie like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, though, here's why a more serious tone is definitely the way to go.   The difference...

Watch: 'The Dead Lands' Clip Brings Out The Warrior Spirit (Exclusive)

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Maori culture has been popping up in movies for quite a while, both in small doses (most recently Ben Kingsley's character in Ender's Game) and large (the terrific Once Were Warriors), but no one has made a movie quite like Toa Fraser's The Dead Lands before, which is a no-punches-pulled action movie about warring Maori tribes fighting to honor the souls of their loved ones. If you imagine The Dead Lands as Apocalypto, but with rich Maori mythology and iconography instead of Mayan, you'll be in the right ballpark. But you don't have to imagine, because we've got a clip from the movie - available now on VOD - that captures the intense warrior spirit that permeates the whole thing. But before we even get to the clip, it's worth pointing out two...

Ang Lee's Next Movie Will Use An Even Higher Frame Rate Than 'The Hobbit'

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 07:00 PM PDT

Ang Lee is one of a small number of filmmakers we trust with seemingly gimmicky innovations. His adaptation of Life of Pi provided us with further reason to accept that 3D can be an artistic tool and not just a means for Hollywood to increase ticket prices. Now, we can put our faith in the concept of high frame rate, as Lee's next feature, the 3D war movie Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, will reportedly be shot digitally at 4K resolution and 120 frames per second.  You are probably now thinking of Peter Jackson, another filmmaker we've tended to trust with new cinema technology. He shot all three Hobbit movies at 48 frames per second, but after viewers reacted negatively to its employment on the first installment, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey...

'Black Mass' Trailer: This Is The Johnny Depp Everyone Has Been Waiting To See Again

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Johnny Depp is a tremendous actor. No one is going to argue that point. And yet we can also all agree that people don't get as excited for his movies as they once did. After a string of oddballs like Alice in Wonderland, Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger, Transcendence, and Mortdecai, it's understandable that many fans aren't so quick to fall for yet another movie where Depp plays a cooky weirdo with a strange wardrobe. Black Mass, however, looks like it will realign everyone's expectations for Depp movies back to the likes of Blow, Donnie Brasco, and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Directed by Scott Cooper (Into the Furnace), Black Mass tells the true story of notorious Boston criminal Whitey Bulger, and as you can see from the intense first trailer for the movie...

Sequel Buzz: 'Fifty Shades of Grey 2,' 'The Equalizer 2' and 'Goon 2' Are Officially Happening

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 04:40 PM PDT

Looking for the latest news on upcoming movie sequels? We got you. Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed announced for 2017 and 2018 Both Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan will be back for the two sequels following one of this year's biggest hits, Fifty Shades of Grey, and while they're still looking for a replacement for director Sam Taylor-Johnson, the first sequel has hired Niall Leonard to write the script. Leonard's name might sound familiar to those hardcore fans of the series as he is the husband of Fifty Shades author E.L. James.  This will be Leonard's first script for a major studio. Previously he has done work for some British television shows. Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed are on their way with releases in...

Watch: Not Even Paul Rudd's Kids Care He's Playing Ant-Man, Plus: A New Clip From the Movie

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 03:10 PM PDT

Avengers: Age of Ultron may hit theaters in just over a week, but forget about that. It hasn't come out yet, but it's old news and we're already onto the next, next Marvel hotness: Ant-Man. Star Paul Rudd, who is also now an official writer on the movie (but more on that in a bit), stopped by David Letterman's place this week for a bit of promotion and brought with him a clip from Ant-Man showing his first encounter with the miracle shrinking suit. There aren't really any spoilers in the clip, so don't worry on that front, it's just a brief look into the tone and humor of the movie. Perhaps an even better look at those crucial elements, however, is Rudd's actual chat with Letterman, which is basically a self-deprecating bit about how no...

Christopher Nolan Reveals His Favorite Movie of 2014 and The One Scene He's Most Proud Of

Posted: 23 Apr 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Interstellar and Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan was on hand at this year's Tribeca Film Festival for a conversation with Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller, and their chat covered a number of different topics -- from Nolan's first influences (Star Wars) to his massive success as a filmmaker (“I do attribute a lot of it to luck"). What else is going on inside the nerdy mind of the guy who gave us Inception and Memento? Here are three Christopher Nolan fun facts to break out at your next movie party 1. His favorite movie of 2014  “I really loved Whiplash last year. I thought that was an incredible piece of work. That was the kind of film where when you see it, it’s very precisely put together and you’re very...
