Fox Renews 'The Last Man on Earth' for Season 2

the last man on earth
Fox has renewed freshman comedy "The Last Man on Earth" for a second season, the network announced Wednesday.

The midseason series, starring "Saturday Night Live" alum Will Forte as the titular lone human (or so he thinks), has struck a chord with critics and audiences alike, and Fox is cashing in on that cultural cachet.

"We knew we had something special with 'The Last Man on Earth.' It's one of those rare shows that continues to add depth and dimension to its unique premise, week after week," said David Madden, Fox Broadcasting Company's Entertainment President, in a statement. "We are so thrilled that this incredibly bold, original and inventive series has been embraced by both fans and critics, and we cannot wait to see where the creative genius and inspired vision of Will, Phil and Chris take us in season two."

Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the duo behind "The LEGO Movie" and "22 Jump Street," serve as executive producers of the Sunday night series. It also stars Kristen Schaal, January Jones, and Mel Rodriguez.

"Last Man" joins fellow Fox series "New Girl" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" as the only comedies renewed by the network so far.

Hey 'Empire Records' Fans: It's Rex Manning Day! (VIDEO)

Posted:

Rex Manning, Empire Records
It's not just "Lost" Day: Today, April 8, is also Rex Manning Day, the fictional holiday that has sprung up around 1990s cult classic "Empire Records," which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.

One of the main subplots of the flick, which takes place at the titular record store on the date in question (eagle-eyed viewers can spot the date on a poster on the door), centers around an appearance by onetime teen idol Rex Manning (played by Maxwell Caulfield), an aging lothario who's deluded himself into thinking his music is still relevant -- and has the ego and overly-coiffed hair to prove it. He shows up to Empire for a signing, treats everyone like dirt, and ends up scaring off Liv Tyler's character by being a total skeezeball.

But Manning's bad manners were comedy gold, and other characters' interactions with him and their preparation for his arrival drive many of the best moments of the movie. Mark (played by Ethan Embry, who was going by the name Ethan Randall at the time) is especially excited about Manning's arrival, dreamily declaring during a tense moment, "We musn't dwell. No, not today. We can't! Not on Rex Manning Day!"

So, Happy Rex Manning Day, fellow "Empire Records Fans." Celebrate by watching this supercut of Rex's best moments from the flick, or maybe listen to his comeback song, "Say No More (Mon Amour)," a few times as you glue quarters to the floor.

Every Nicholas Sparks Movie, Ranked From Best to Worst

Posted:

Best-selling romance author Nicholas Sparks's brand of schmaltz and tragedy has given us such go-to tearjerkers as "The Notebook," but not every book has become a weepy classic.

Since 1999, with "Message in a Bottle," his films have earned more than $800 million. Lately, however, his appeal seems to be dwindilng, at least for moviegoers. Last year's "The Best of Me," starring Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden, had the lowest opening yet of any the films based on his books. Will the latest adaptation, "The Longest Ride," stars Scott Eastwood (yep, son of Clint) do better?

It wasn't easy -- since rarely have critics and audiences disagreed more -- but we ranked Sparks's movie adaptations from best to worst.nicholas sparks movies The Longest Ride - Trailer No. 1

Happy 'Lost' Day, a Celebration a Decade in the Making

Posted:

Lost, Lost numbers, Lost lotto, Lost Day
Today, April 8, isn't the day hit supernatural drama "Lost" premiered, and it isn't the date of the series finale, either. So why is today considered "Lost" Day?

If you're a fan of the show, you know why: It's all thanks to Hurley's (Jorge Garcia) lottery numbers -- for the unfamiliar, those would be 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 -- which just so happen to coincide with today's date, 4/8/15. And for an extra kicker, the last four numbers align as the (military) time 4:23:42 p.m.

The numbers were first introduced back in the 18th episode of the show's first season (which aired on March 2, 2005), explaining that Hurley played them and hit the lotto jackpot -- and was immediately beset by bad luck. It turns out that those numbers were significant to the island, too, with Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) tasked with punching them into a computer hidden in The Hatch every 108 minutes.

The sequence popped up throughout the series, eventually revealed as coinciding with specific members of the castaways' group who were candidates to take over the role of the island's protector from the mysterious Jacob (Mark Pellegrino). A different digit was assigned to each person by Jacob, who determined the numbers using degrees on a lighthouse mirror.

If that all sounds convoluted, that final revelation wasn't a big hit with fans, either, though part of the fun of "Lost" was coming up with theories to explain the island's endless mysteries. And based on all the hype surrounding the celebration of "Lost" Day, it seems that fans have (mostly) forgiven the show's creators and producers -- including J.J. Abrams, Carlton Cuse, and Damon Lindelof -- for all the miscues.

Here's to a once-in-a-century celebration of "Lost" Day, in honor of a once-in-a-lifetime show.

Twisted Video Game 'Five Nights at Freddy's' to Become a Movie

Posted:

Five Nights at Freddy's
Fans of demonic bears are in luck: Video game "Five Nights at Freddy's" is getting the big screen treatment.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Warner Bros. will distribute a film version of "Freddy's," the popular game created by Scott Cawthon. Seth Grahame-Smith ("Dark Shadows," "Beetlejuice 2") and David Katzenberg are producing, alongside Roy Lee. (That trio is currently at work on Cary Fukunaga's adaptation of Stephen King's "It.")

The game description, per THR:

The game takes place in Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a darker version of Chuck-E-Cheese, where an animatronic animal band performs kiddy songs by day, and goes on murderous rampages by night. The goal of the game is survive a night locked inside, knowing that a furry death machine might jump out of the dark at any moment.

Grahame-Smith noted that the flick would be "an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie."

"The story really lends itself to being a movie and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to," Cawthon added.

The project is currently searching for a writer.

A 'She's All That' Remake Is in the Works: Report

Posted:

Hit 1999 teen flick "She's All That" is getting a makeover, with reports suggesting that a remake starring a more diverse cast is in the works.

The Tracking Board writes that Miramax and The Weinstein Company are teaming up to remake the property, with director Kenny Leon attached. Leon is also directing NBC's upcoming live staging of "The Wiz," and has helmed several updates on classic films and plays, including the 2012 Lifetime version of "Steel Magnolias."

In addition to Leon, the creative team also reportedly includes Tonya Lewis Lee (wife of Spike Lee), who's producing the project. TheWrap reports that filmmakers are looking to cast more diverse leads this time around.

"She's All That" -- a take on the "Pygmalion" tale that inspired "My Fair Lady" -- starred Freddie Prinze Jr. as a jock who makes a bet that he can turn an ugly duckling (Rachael Leigh Cook) into prom queen. The flick also starred Paul Walker, Kevin Pollak, Matthew Lillard, Anna Paquin, Usher, Lil' Kim, Gabrielle Union, Dule Hill, Kieran Culkin, Clea DuVall, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, Elden Henson, Tim Matheson, and Alexis Arquette.

TheWrap reached out to reps from Miramax and TWC for comment; Miramax denied that a deal was in place. Stay tuned.

Peter Dinklage: 'Game of Thrones' Fans Need to 'Ease Up' on George R. R. Martin

Posted:

Game of ThronesPeter Dinklage, aka Tyrion Lannister on HBO's "Game of Thrones," was on "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" Tuesday night, and of course they talked about Season 5, which starts this Sunday, April 12.

Jon Stewart noted that there are a lot of book-to-screen changes this season. He asked if George R.R. Martin, who writes the book series upon which "GoT" is based, ever comes on set and says "No!" to this or that. Peter said, "He used to. He's busy lately. He's writing those books." The audience laughed a bit and Peter turned to them with a shrug. "Right?" He added, "My heart goes out to poor George because, boy oh boy, they're hard on him, the fans. I mean, it's lovely because they want those books, but they gotta ease up." Jon and Peter discussed the difficulty of writing such a long, complex series. Fans do understand why it's taking so long, but it's still hard to wait.

GRRM said he would be skipping several upcoming events, including San Diego Comic-Con, to focus on other commitments -- like finishing the next book, "The Winds of Winter." Watch Peter's full "Daily Show" clip to see a glimpse of the Season 5 premiere, and hear more of his interesting fan experiences.

7 Comedian-Starring Sitcoms You Probably Forgot About

Posted:

There have been tons of TV shows headlined by stand-up comics over the years, but not all of them can be hits like "Seinfeld," "Ellen," "Martin," "Roseanne," or "Everybody Goes Raymond." For every stand-up sitcom success story, there are some short-lived programs that fell by the wayside. They aren't sitcoms, but two shows starring comedians air on FX tomorrow -- Louis C.K.'s beloved "Louie" heads into its fifth season and the Billy Crystal vehicle "The Comedians" makes its debut. Will the comedy legend's TV return stand the test of time? Even the most talented and popular comics couldn't make some of these shows last. Take a look at 7 comedian-starring sitcoms you (probably) forgot about.

Actor Geoffrey Lewis Dies at 79, Daughter Juliette Shares Touching Note For 'Hero'

Posted:

Geoffrey Lewis was one of those character actors who was in just about everything, but first and foremost he was a father. Lewis died of natural causes on Tuesday, April 7.

Fans may know him from Clint Eastwood movies like "High Plains Drifter," "Every Which Way But Loose," "Pink Cadillac" and "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." He has dozens of TV and film credits on his resume, and he was nominated for a Golden Globe award for his role in the TV series "Flo." Actress Juliette Lewis just knows him as Dad, and early Wednesday morning she posted a larger version of the photo shown above on Instagram with a caption that goes straight to the heart:

My dad. My dad my dad my dad my dad. My love my dad. My dad. My hero. My dad. My dad my love my loving father. My strength my might. My friend. My hugs. My laughter. My love. My dad. Oh my heart. My heart. He loved us so. He loved us so. So so much. I am forever my father's daughter and he will never been gone."

Beautiful. According to Variety, Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife Paula Hochhalter, Juliette and nine other children -- including actors Lightfield and Matthew, and actress Dierdre. He will be missed but, as Juliette said, he will never be gone.

'Grace of Monaco': Former Oscar Hopeful Will Now Premiere on Lifetime

Posted:

Grace of Monaco Movie PosterThis is certainly not the royal treatment. The Nicole Kidman movie "Grace of Monaco" opened last year's Cannes Film Festival, but it's now headed to Lifetime. Yep, according to The Hollywood Reporter, it will premiere as a Lifetime movie on Memorial Day, May 25.

"Grace of Monaco" stars Oscar-winner Kidman as Grace Kelly, with Tim Roth as Prince Rainier III, and Frank Langella and Parker Posey in supporting roles. The film was originally scheduled for late 2013 release and - considering the star and subject - was viewed early on as a potential Oscar contender. Then it was panned by critics, the release date was shifted to early 2014, that didn't work out, and The Weinstein Company didn't include "Grace of Monaco" on its 2015 release schedule. Instead of releasing it in U.S. theaters, a source confirmed to THR that The Weinstein Company decided to sell "Grace" directly to Lifetime.

So now fans have a chance to stay at home and judge whether "Grace" is an underrated gem or a true royal flop.

'The Golden Girls' May Get Official Lego Set, If Enough Fans Want It

Posted:

If you threw a party, and invited everyone you knew, you could gather them around an official "Golden Girls" Lego set - if Lego puts it into production.

Lego has this thing where they invite fans to create models of potential Lego sets, take photos, and share descriptions on their Lego Ideas page to gather support for the proposals. Right now, there's a proposal for a Lego version of "The Golden Girls," complete with photos of how the set would look. If the project gets 10,000 supporters, it heads to the Lego Review stage, where a board of set designers and marketers evaluate the project and decide whether it will become a new Lego Ideas set. At this point, there are just over 2,400 supporters, with 343 days left to hit the 10,000 mark.

Here's the product description, from the creator:

This is a recreation of the Golden Girls House used in filming the popular 1980's show that is still watched daily around the world. It is the Foyer, Living Room, and Kitchen built like a TV set, with one wall removed and a full view into the space. It comes with 5 minifigures including Dorothy, Rose, Sophia, Blanche, and Stanley. It has been meticulously recreated to have opening cupboards and fridge in the kitchen, Wicker Sofa and Chairs, a hallway backdrop, a storage closet in the kitchen, and an outdoor area with potted plants and a hose.

I have recreated many classic scenes from the show, including a visit from Burt Reynolds, Rose shooting Blanche's Vase, Dorothy Playing "Grab That Dough" and Rose rescuing her Teddy Bear from a mean little girl."

The set designer said, if they get to 5,000 votes, they'll add the lanai behind the foyer. "The girls need a place to relax in the sun and play cards." Truth. Head to the page to see more photos of the product, then share your support if you want to make it happen. They'll thank you for being a friend!

Here's Why There's No 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Post-Credits Scene

Posted:

Surprise: There's no surprise coming! Instead, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" writer/director Joss Whedon just issued a public service announcement, warning fans not to sit through 10 minutes of credits expecting another surprise end scene, ala "Iron Man," the first "Avengers" film, etc. No more restaurant trips for our heroes.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly, "There will be a tag" scene after the credits start, but not a "post-post-credit scene." There's nothing coming at the very end, and it's "not a fake-out," Whedon told EW.

Why didn't they include a final scene this time? Whedon said they tried to come up with something to top or at least match the "Avengers" shawarma, but nothing felt right for what they were doing in "Age of Ultron" (which opens May 1). "We all came at it separately - we don't want to chase that," Whedon says. "That was a jewel and a weird little quirk."

It's disappointing, but also in a way encouraging, since it shows a commitment to quality. They're not just going to do something because it's expected. Then again, an EW commenter named Art offered this possible coda: "The post credits scene should be a shot of Stan Lee, as a janitor, cleaning up the aftermath of the party scene and he nonchalantly picks up Thor's hammer to wipe off the table and simply lays it back down and keeps cleaning!" Maybe good for next time?

Best of Late Night TV: Louis C.K. Refused to Hire Jimmy Fallon in '90s, Rick Gervais' Awkward Man-Wich (VIDEO)

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.

Louis C.K. was on "The Tonight Show" and he and Jimmy Fallon discussed some personal history. Apparently Jimmy forgot, but he auditioned for Louis when Louis was the head writer for "The Dana Carvey Show" in the '90s. They were auditioning people to be in the cast and Jimmy came in - this adorable little boy (as Louis recalled). Jimmy played his guitar and had little troll dolls, then turned and wiggled his tight little a**. Jimmy argued that he definitely didn't turn and wiggle his butt several times. When the names came up for casting, all the women in the staff argued for Jimmy but Louis and the other guys argued against him. Louis said he would quit the show if they hired the kid. He now admits it was pure jealousy - Jimmy had all his hair and was cute and in shape and Louis was already sweaty and going bald and out of shape. So Louis torpedoed his shot, but look at Jimmy now. Jimmy: "You want me to thank you?!" This is probably how most casting decisions get made - based on the insecurities of the people in charge. Funny, though. Conan O'Brien had both Senator Elizabeth Warren and Ricky Gervais on the show - and it's a shame Sen. Warren didn't join the Man-Wich that Ricky made with Conan and Andy Richter. She kept things smart and classy. Ricky, on the other hand, was Ricky. In the Man-Wich, Andy and Conan were the bread, and Ricky was either the meat or the cheese. You have to watch these three grown men get into their positions, then Ricky asks Conan to just start interviewing him as if it's normal. It's too bizarre. Elizabeth Warren definitely should've just jumped right on this pile. Instead, she talked about her book, student loan debt, and raising the minimum wage. Rob Corddry, Megan Mullally, Tig Notaro were on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" and Tig said she'd like to host the next Oscars. Megan briefly hosted a daytime talk show and talked about that experience. Megan would rather be a late-night host, but "they never hire women, you might have noticed, for late night." The audience clapped, which confused Tig and Megan. "Are you in support of no women?" James joked that they were saying, "Yeah, another white guy!" Jon Cryer and Kat Dennings, who were just on "The Tonight Show" Monday night, sat down (separately) with Seth Meyers on Tuesday. Jon talked about writing his memoir, which happened because he lost a bet. He got a book deal within a week (sorry, struggling authors everywhere!) and discussed the sections on Charlie Sheen and his "hurricane" on "Two and a Half Men." Kat talked about dating Josh Groban and "2 Broke Girls" getting picked up for Season 5. She wants the broke girls to get rich for a season.
