With a DC Comics-based cinematic universe on the horizon due to the 2016 releases of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, one of the biggest casting announcements to come out of the news of the latter film was Jared Leto as the Joker. While not historically associated with the Squad, Joker’s presence in a film full of historically villainous DC characters may give an interesting hint at the kind of Joker we’ll be seeing with these new conceptions of DC characters, including Batman and his supporting characters of allies and enemies. Rumors have surfaced recently that claim the Joker will be appearing in some form in Batman v Superman, as well as others saying that Batman will show up in some form in Suicide Squad. The common... It's no secret that one of the bigger emerging trends in Hollywood right now are these shared movie universes, a la what Marvel Studios is doing (see: Avengers: Age of Ultron, in theaters this weekend) and what Warner Bros. will start doing with their own DC movies, beginning with next year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But what we aren't seeing from these shared movie universes is an expansion outside the comic book genre. Universal is mounting a shared universe of monster movies and there's been talk of a Robin Hood-themed franchise in the works, but the comedy genre hasn't really been mined for potential... until now. Yes, that 21 Jump Street/Men in Black crossover movie you heard rumblings about is indeed real, and as we speak Sony is drafting up... Read More

Until now, the images we've seen of Batman's suit in and from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice -- including the clips in the first trailer -- have had the costume partly obscured in shadow, or they've been black and white photographs. But we know for sure now that those were all darkened views of this Batman's look, because today via JPosters we've got a color image with full light exposing the latest Batsuit as being much lighter in its shade of grey than we thought. Previous images made the main body appear to possibly even still be black in color but faded in appearance due to lighting. Instead it's actually light grey in color and appears to be darker in those other shots without light shining on it. The color choice is appropriate... Read More

Has it really been three years since our socks were knocked off by Avengers? I'm not sure what happened in the interim. Maybe our feet got bigger. Maybe we got some of those sock stirrups that nobody really wears anymore. Regardless, this time with Avengers: Age of Ultron, our socks were only tugged on, halfway flopping off our collective toes, but never blown quite off. Not for lack of trying, mind you! If anything Ultron is downright pummeling with non-stop comic book melodrama. We'll let the man - excuse me, android - speak for himself... Click image to enlarge Read More

Vin Diesel is a huge nerd. You may not be able to tell that based purely on the Fast & Furious franchise, but Diesel's got some serious geek credentials. He founded a video game company just to make games for his Pitch Black movies, and he not only grew up playing Dungeons & Dragons, but he still does as an adult, and better yet -- he taught Judi Dench how to play while they were filming The Chronicles of Riddick. So don't be so shocked to see the muscle car icon starring in a fantasy movie like The Last Witch Hunter, which has just revealed its first teaser trailer. The teaser doesn't dole out a whole ton of plot specifics, but as you can probably guess from the title, if you dabble in the dark arts, Vin Diesel is going to chop your... Read More

Inferno: Director Ron Howard has revealed the first on-set photos from Inferno, the latest in a series based on books by Dan Brown. Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones star; the dramatic thriller started production this week in Venice, Italy, and is scheduled for release on October 14, 2016. [Collider] Robotech: James Wan (Furious 7) is in "early discussions" to direct Robotech, the big-screen adaptation of a Japanese animated television series. The show revolved around "robotic technology found on a crashed alien starship that Earth used to fight off various alien invasions." Thanks to the gigantic box-office success of Furious 7, Wan is very much in demand, so it's by no means a certainty that he'll be available for this potential... Read More

It's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" mania at the box office! But how much do you really know about the actors who make up Marvel's Avengers? Probably not as much as you think. So here are a bunch of super-duper, interest-piquing facts about the cast of Marvel's superstar cast to enlighten you.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Linney will star in the sequel to the recently-rebooted "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" series in an undisclosed role. The actress has favored dramatic and awards-baiting fare in the past (she's a three-time Oscar nominee, and Golden Globe and Emmy winner for her work on Showtime dramedy "The Big C"), so her addition to the big-budget, effects-heavy, kid-friendly franchise is certainly a bit of a headscratcher; we'll be interested to see just who she's playing once more details are revealed.
Linney joins Perry, Steven Amell, and Brian Tee as fresh faces in the flick. Megan Fox and Will Arnett will reprise their roles from the 2014 film.
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2" is due in theaters on June 3, 2016.
It's no secret that "Avengers: Age of Ultron" will make a ton of money during its opening weekend. But just how big will this sure-to-be-massive movie ultimately become?
Predictions among box office analysts are mixed, but one forecast seems a given: The second flick in the "Avengers" series should easily outpace the first film's jaw-dropping $207.4 million domestic debut from 2012. Per Variety, "AMC is reporting dozens of opening-night sellouts, MovieTickets.com is moving tickets at four times the rate of the first 'Avengers' and Fandango says pre-sales ... [match] those for all previous Marvel Studios films combined."
That excitement is a huge coup for Marvel and Disney, and it's matched by opening weekend estimates that range from the more conservative $200 million to as much as $215 million or higher. Couple that with the $201 million "Ultron" has already racked up overseas, and "Ultron" will easily cruise to box office dominance over the next few days.
While it's opening weekend success is assured, what about the flick's long-term international box office chances? "Furious 7" made headlines recently when it became the fastest flick ever to earn $1 billion worldwide; could "Ultron" steal that record? And furthermore, will it outpace "The Avengers," which has raked in $1.52 billion and earned the third place crown on the all-time international box office chart?
"Furious 7" has proven to be a juggernaut, but it would seem that the momentum is swinging back in Tony Stark and co.'s favor. Only time will tell, of course, but bet on the Avengers crew to come out swinging in a fight for some of that box office glory. Current champ "Avatar" ($2.79 billion) may want to watch its back.
Another familiar face is returning to the "American Horror Story" universe: Angela Bassett has been confirmed to star on the upcoming fifth season, "Hotel."
"AHS" creator Ryan Murphy -- as he's done many times before in recent months -- revealed the news on Twitter, writing that Bassett would once again take part in the horror anthology series. Bassett, who also starred on "Coven" and "Freak Show," will be "making lots of trouble with Lady Gaga in the ballroom and elsewhere," Murphy wrote.
In October, Angela Bassett will be making lots of trouble with Lady Gaga in the ballroom and elsewhere. #ahshotel
Details of Gaga's role have yet to be revealed, though based on this observation from Murphy, she and Bassett will play antagonists this season. Murphy made similarominous statements about returning "AHS" vets Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters, too.
"American Horror Story: Hotel" also stars Kathy Bates, Chloe Sevigny, Matt Bomer, Wes Bentley, and Cheyenne Jackson. It shoots this summer, with an October premiere date planned.
"Modern Family" actress Ariel Winter doesn't just play a normal teenager on television: She's one in real life, too.
That was apparent this week after Winter posted some pictures from her high school prom, which she attended with her boyfriend, musician Laurent Claude Gaudette. Sure, Winter's gown was probably a lot more expensive than her peers', and her hair and makeup were most likely attended to by a glitzy Hollywood stylist, but the actress was still simply an excited teen happy to mark a quintessential coming of age milestone.
This isn't the first time that 17-year-old Winter has acted her age off of the "Modern Family" set, either. Earlier this year, she and Gaudette also attended her school's winter formal, goofing around in a photobooth.
Check out Winter's stunning prom dress (and sweet photo with her dad) below.
The success of "21 Jump Street" and its sequel, "22 Jump Street," signified that this franchise would continue to grow, and now, two new reports reveal that there are two more "Jump" flicks in the works: a spinoff and a surprising crossover.
The first was reported by The Tracking Board, which writes that a female-centric "Jump" spinoff is currently in development at Sony, with "Broad City" writers and producers Lucia Aniello and Paul Downs attached to write the screenplay. No details about a possible plot (or who may star) were provided.
TheWrap followed up with its own report, writing that Sony is hoping to replicate its "Jump Street" success with the female-led flick, which will "feature the same comedic tone" as its predecessors. In addition to that project, an even more intriguing one is on the horizon for the brand.
According to TheWrap's report, the third film in the original "Jump" franchise -- to again feature leads Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill -- will actually be a crossover flick with the "Men in Black" franchise. Much like the first two films made fun of reboots and sequels, respectively, "the next 'Jump Street' movie will send-up the current trend of Shared Movie Universes by having Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum enter the 'Men in Black' universe and investigate aliens," the trade writes.
It sounds pretty strange, but then again, so did a "21 Jump Street" reboot, and we all know how that worked out. Stay tuned to see how all this moves forward.
It looks like director Bryan Singer is taking the 1980s setting of "X-Men: Apocalypse" seriously, based on a new behind-the-scenes photo of two new mutants.
On Thursday, Singer shared a snap of actresses Lana Condor and Sophie Turner on set, looking every bit the '80s part: they sport high-waisted jeans, neon, exaggerated shoulders, and of course, wacky, overly-teased hairdos. Condor and Turner, who play Jubilee and Jean Grey, respectively, were apparently shooting a scene at an arcade on what Singer said was their second day of filming.

Based on this photo alone, it looks like audiences are in for a winkingly-retro treat, much in the same way that "X-Men: Days of Future Past" embraced its 1970s setting. The rest of the cast includes "X-Men" regulars Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Evan Peters, and Lucas Till, and newcomers Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee Ben Hardy, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Munn, and Oscar Isaac.
"X-Men: Apocalypse" is due in theaters on May 27, 2016.
This weekend, things go awry after Tony Stark jumpstarts a dormant peacekeeping program, and the Avengers have to take down the villainous Ultron in "Avengers: Age of Ultron." Plus, Carey Mulligan is overwhelmed with suitors in Victorian England in "Far From the Madding Crowd."
Also in theaters this weekend:
"Welcome to Me" stars Kristen Wiig as a lottery winner who immediately quits her psychiatric meds and buys her own talk show.
"Tangerines" follows an Estonian man who takes in a wounded man after war shows up at his front door. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2015 Oscars.
"Iris" is a documentary about fashion icon Iris Apfel, from late legendary documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles.
"Far From Men" stars Viggo Mortensen as a French teacher in a small Algerian village who forms an unexpected bond with a dissident during the Algerian War, and is then ordered to turn him in to the authorities.

The first teaser for "Fifty Shades Darker," the sequel to the blockbuster romance "Fifty Shades of Grey," hit the Internet. It's brief - just 30 seconds - and only shows a glimpse of Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) donning a masquerade mask.
The ominous music and look of the teaser points to what Universal Studios chairman Donna Langley said would be "more of a thriller." Fans of the E.L. James' novels will know exactly what that means. Without spoiling too much, all we'll say is that a figure from Christian's past comes back to haunt him and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) - and that's not the only danger the couple faces.
The "Fifty Shades Darker" teaser can be found on the movie's Blu-ray, which is available May 8. The sequel is set to hit theaters Feb. 10, 2017.

NBC is following the Netflix model of releasing an entire season of episodes for its new crime thriller, "Aquarius," starring David Duchovny. The network will make all 13 episodes of the series available after its May 28 premiere on NBC.com, the NBC app, and other video-on-demand platforms. The show, which follows Duchovny's detective tracking down Charles Manson in the '60s, will also continue to broadcast weekly.
"With 'Aquarius' we have the opportunity to push some new boundaries to give our audience something no broadcast network has done before," said NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt in a statement. "We are fully aware how audiences want to consume multiple episodes of new television series faster and at their own discretion, and we're excited to offer our viewers this same experience since all 13 episodes of this unique show have been produced and are ready to be seen."
NBC is also breaking ground with the advertising model for the show, which will feature limited commercial interruptions from a select group of advertisers.

It's no secret: filming a period movie is tough... really tough. A filmmaker's biggest challenge, of course, is taking a modern city and turning back the clock.
Successfully disguising a location to make the audience believe they've actually stepped back in time is no small feat. It requires countless antique props and (very) vintage clothing, and the need to hide all things present day!
Regardless of whether or not the film has successfully transported us back to a different era, there's usually a mistake or two that slips through the cracks. From "The Godfather" to "Pride & Prejudice," here are a few "oops" moments from your favorite period pieces.
Joss Whedon returns to write and direct another massive Marvel spectacle with "Avengers: Age of Ultron," the sequel to "The Avengers," the third highest-grossing movie of all time. Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Dr. Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk), Black Widow, and Hawkeye are back together again after their showdown with Loki in New York City, and this time they face an even bigger, globally minded villain: Ultron -- and two freaky, fiery, fast twins. The guys (and Natasha) love their witty banter and competitive spirit, but they're not just sitting around eating shawarma and telling jokes. They're busy trying to keep Ultron from causing an extinction-level catastrophe.
Here are five issues to keep in mind before heading off to see the latest installment in the "Avengers" franchise.
1. What's your kid's Marvel IQ? Has your kid seen the other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, like the first "Avengers," "Iron Man," "Thor," "Captain America," and their sequels? Do they know the basic origin stories of each of the Avengers and how they're connected to S.H.I.E.L.D. and characters like the Black Widow and Hawkeye? If the answer is no, you may want to watch those movies at home first and then head out to see the superheroes reunite in "Avengers: Age of Ultron."
2. How does your kid handle violence in movies? All superhero movies contain elements of danger and violence; otherwise there'd be no reason for the superheroes to exist in the first place. And the violence in "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is definitely no exception: there is macro violence that kills scores of people (explosions, train derailments, and a mass catastrophe that could potentially wipe out an entire city with worldwide consequences), and up close and personal violence that includes secondary characters being killed and our beloved Avengers bruised, battered, and bloody.
3. Do you worry about sex/language? There's no need to worry about sex or language in "Avengers: Age of Ultron." While two Avengers flirt and eventually kiss, and a married couple shares a few hello and goodbye embraces, there's little romance, but most of "the ladies" (Jane, Pepper) are absent. Eyecandy, yes -- the broad-shouldered Avengers walk around shirtless and Black Widow wears a cleavage-baring costume -- but no sex. As for language, there's the occasional "sh-t," "ass," or "damn," but with straight-edge Captain America admonishing Tony for his "language," this is one of the cleanest PG-13 scripts around.
4. Who will enjoy the movie most? Clearly anyone -- child or adult -- who is a fan of Marvel-based movies is the prime audience, and if you know and love the comics, even better. In fact, prepare to wear (or see) plenty of Avengers T-shirts or full-on costumes if you're going opening night. While I saw kids as young as 3 or 4 at the movie's press screening, it's not meant for kids younger than tweens; not only is it a loud and violent movie, but it's two-and-a-half hours long!
5. What are critics saying about "Avengers: Age of Ultron"? Critics have generally enjoyed or even loved the movie, but the sequel isn't generating the sort of unanimously positive response that the first "Avengers" received. Richard Roeper raved "'Avengers: Age of Ultron' is a sometimes daffy, occasionally baffling, surprisingly touching and even romantic adventure with one kinetic thrill after another. It earns a place of high ranking in the Marvel Universe," whereas A.A. Dowd of "The A.V. Club" had a few issues: "There's so much ground to cover here -- so many introductions to make, so much story to churn through, so many gargantuan set pieces to mount -- that the movie never really finds room to breathe." "The New Yorker" critic Anthony Lane, however, was unimpressed: "First, you try to understand what the hell is going on. Then you slowly realize that you will never understand what is going on. And, last, you wind up with the distinct impression that, if there was anything to understand, it wasn't worth the sweat."
"Avengers: Age of Ultron" is in theaters everywhere May 1st.

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
Much like the rest of the world, Kristen Wiig is a total "Game of Thrones" nerd -- so much so that she showed up to her "Tonight Show" appearance dresses as Khaleesi. Shout out to the stuffed dragon perched on her shoulder! (Also, much like everything Kristen does, this is absolutely golden.) Chelsea Handler visited "Late Night" and spend most of her time telling Seth Meyers about the time she tried marijuana edibles in Mexico. Precious memories! "Jimmy Kimmel Live's" resident wild animal expert, Dave Salmoni, was in the house today, and he completely traumatized both Jimmy and Billy Crystal by forcing them to interact with a black bear cub. Most adorable moment of the Late Night Roundup, by far. Finally on "Conan," Matthew Perry chatted about watching a particularly x-rated porn during the golden years of "Friends." The catch? He accidentally blasted it out of his outdoor speakers, horrifying an entire neighborhood which doing so. Yikes, Matthew Perry. Yikes.

Marvel fans, rejoice: "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is finally here! I don't know about you, but I've been ready for the sequel to "The Avengers" for three years. There's a good chance that the entire American population will go see "Age of Ultron" when it premieres this Friday, May 1st. But just in case you're one of the few still looking for a reason to go watch one of the most anticipated movies of the year, here are five:
1. The World's Coolest Team Is Finally Reunited We had already grown to love Earth's mightiest heroes because of their appearances in the movies that came before "The Avengers." But that 2012 blockbuster showed us what it was like to have the team be united, when they work together to fight bad guys and say some fabulous one-liners. In the films that came after "The Avengers," audiences got to see even more development of our favorite characters. It will be great to see the team back together after all of these changes. Will they still be able to work together when they're facing new challenges and new characters? Speaking of which...
2. Fun New Characters "Age of Ultron" is going to introduce a whole host of new and exciting characters. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver have appeared prominently in trailers. These characters are twins who appear to be working with big bad guy Ultron at first, but may switch their allegiances later on. We'll also be seeing mysterious new character The Vision. Not much is known about him yet, other than he is played by Paul Bettany, who voiced Tony Stark's AI butler, Jarvis. It will be interesting to see how these new players fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and whether they will affect our favorite characters for better or worse.
3. James Spader as Ultron Ultron is a new character, but he's so important that he deserves he's reason enough to see the movie. James Spader is a fabulous actor, and if the trailers are anything to go by, he will be playing Ultron with an enticing mix of terror and charisma. Created by Tony Stark, Ultron is a robot with artificial intelligence and a mind of his own, Frankenstein's monster for the digital age. I'm excited to see just exactly how this villain will upend the Avengers, and how James Spader will portray such an iconic character.
4. Awesome Action Scenes Come on, it's a Marvel superhero movie. There are going to be some fabulous action scenes, delightful fights, and mayhem included. Of course, audiences are coming for the story as well as the explosions, but beautifully executed action sequences don't hurt.
5. Great Dialogue One of the reasons that "The Avengers"is so special is its dialogue. It's a superhero film, but there are some truly clever moments in terms of one-liners and witticisms given by characters. If "Avengers: Age of Ultron"can live up to its predecessor in terms of dialogue as well as in terms of action and character development, it will be a great movie indeed.
Anyone who knows me can tell you that I don't just watch TV and movies. I get invested in shows and films, falling in love with the characters and staying up late to think about conspiracy theories. I have bored my friends with more than one rant about the importance of the development of a certain character, or the political underpinnings of any given sci-fi show. I have very strong opinions about the media that I consume, perhaps especially with films. And one of the biggest problems I have with movies is the severe lack of critical appreciation for blockbuster movies.
Within every field of art, there are forms which are considered acceptable and forms which are considered plebeian. It's Mozart versus Ariana Grande, "Downton Abbey" versus the "Real Housewives" series. Within film, it's movies like "Birdman" versus "Avengers: Age of Ultron." It's a clear dichotomy between films that win Oscars and films that win the box office, but I think that this needs to change. Popular movies should start being integrated into the awards system. There's a certain disdain for popular culture which is prevalent in our society, and I'm pretty bothered by it.
Blockbuster movies are often at the cutting edge of visual techniques and new types of storytelling. Movies like "Jaws," "Star Wars," "Jurassic Park," and "Avatar"took people's breath away in theaters, as new forms of filmmaking were used to tell unique and vibrant stories. But beyond just visual storytelling, blockbuster movies can mirror the contemporary world in a way that isn't typically addressed. The "X-Men" series, particularly "X-Men 2," addressed the issues of outcasts and even segregation in society, serving as a powerful allegory for the treatment of minorities. "The Dark Knight"captures the zeitgeist of post-9/11 America perfectly, questioning the nature of terrorism. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" was also incredibly politically conscious, discussing how freedom can exist when government conducts such heavy surveillance on its people.
Then you have the question of diversity in film. The "Fast & Furious"franchise just released its seventh movie. The cast of this movie is incredibly diverse, featuring characters from across ethnicities and backgrounds. Blockbuster movies, including "Star Trek"and the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," often present a version of society that more accurately reflects the real world, with characters who aren't just white males. I'd like to take the time to remind everyone that out of the nine Best Picture nominees at the 2015 Oscars, eight focused on the trials and tribulations experienced by gifted white men. Not that all blockbuster movies should win Best Picture, but they should at least be recognized on the awards circuit for their contribution to the art of filmmaking as a whole.
This is not to say that all blockbuster movies are awesome. There are some truly awful movies in the world that still make over a billion dollars at the box office, notably the "Transformers"franchise. But I would argue that there are some highbrow movies featuring A-list actors and stellar directors that are just as bed. Every genre has its failures. We should not degrade popular movies because they're popular, we should degrade them if, and only if, they aren't actually good.
I know that, occasionally, blockbuster films get critical recognition, such as "The Lord of the Rings"series, but these movies are the exceptions that prove the rule. We, as a culture, are too quick to condemn something because it is beloved by the masses; we label it a guilty pleasure and move on. But I firmly believe that blockbuster movies can be just as good as small, independent films, and we should treat them accordingly.
When you think of some of your favorite celebrities, there are certain qualities that come to mind first. Certainly in the world of Hollywood, height doesn't seem to play as much of a part. But, it may just be that we aren't noticing how tall or short some particular celebrities are. Sometimes casting can be based around height and sometimes we just can't tell how a celebrity would stack up against us.
