What's the Best Movie to Watch When You're Snowed-In?

Posted: 27 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST

While the Northeast part of the United States gets bombarded with a blizzard today, a lot of people are snowed in and staying indoors. And we know what's best to do when you're stuck inside the house: watch movies!  But what movies? There are different ways to go, of course, depending on how much you're looking to put things into perspective or experience a necessary level of escapism or finally get through that really long box set you've been putting off for a rainy -- I mean snowy, really snowy -- day.  First, the perspective: what we mean here is the choice of movies that sort of mirror what's happening outside, but giving you a more extreme scenario that makes your blizzard look like a light flurry. There's Snowpiercer, Frozen, Fargo, Ice...

Joss Whedon Confirms It's Highly Unlikely He'll Direct the Next 'Avengers' Movies

Posted: 26 Jan 2015 09:00 PM PST

Every big franchise director has that moment where, after a movie seems like it cannot possibly be topped but everyone knows the franchise is going to keep going, they say they're not going to direct the next movie. Michael Bay is perhaps the worst at this. He's played a "Nah, not doing another Transformers" for three sequels now, even though he inevitably comes back each time. Well, now Joss Whedon has confirmed speculation that he is not going to direct Avengers: Infinity War, which will be broken up into two parts. But don't take this as him playing the "Will I? Won't I?" game in the press; his reasoning here is actually very understandable. From Empire Magazine, via ComicBookMovie: "I couldn't imagine doing this...

Surprise: 'Mission: Impossible 5' Is Coming Out This Summer Instead of Christmas

Posted: 26 Jan 2015 07:40 PM PST

Movie release dates slide around all the time, but big studio movies usually tend to pick a date and stick with it. After all, the reason they're called tentpoles is because they're massive enough and important enough that they're supposed to lodge into place and support everything around them. When a tentpole's release date changes, it's usually because a studio needs even more time to work on a movie. That's why it's a bit of a shocker that Paramount is shifting Mission: Impossible 5's release date by five months. They're not delaying it, though. It was supposed to come out on December 25, 2015. Now it's being pulled all the way up to July 31, 2015. The studio didn't give a precise reason for the change, but it's not too...

How Sundance Gave Me the Greatest Movie Day of My Life

Posted: 26 Jan 2015 06:45 PM PST

I wish I could call this article, "Something Interesting Happened," but I know as an online writer of little to no fame that we must grab you with the thing, and that thing is that I just saw my most "best" movies in one single day at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, and I don't believe it will ever be topped. I was a stat geek when I was a kid. Here's how I prove that to people: I played Nintendo's football game "10-Yard Fight" and kept track of passing, rushing and receiving stats. Keep in mind, there were no individual players, and the game didn't give you any statistical updates ever. After each play, I would jot down "Walter Payton, 7" or "Steve Largent, 16." I did this for a full imaginary season for 10...

Listen to John Carpenter's New Album of Scores for Movies That Don't Exist

Posted: 26 Jan 2015 05:20 PM PST

One of the signature elements of John Carpenter movies is their score. With only a few exceptions, he has typically composed the music for his features himself, including the iconic theme to Halloween and a number of classic synth-heavy soundtracks that have gone on to influence major electronica artists and modern filmmakers. If you love Carpenter's movies, you likely own the soundtracks to those movies. You may even listen to the scores for the later titles even if you're not as big a fan of them. And you will definitely want to pick up Carpenter's latest album of music, none of which was written for a movie at all. This album is titled Lost Themes, which implies that they were intended for movies but were never used. That's not the case, although...

Watch: Otis Day Entertains National Lampoon Sundance Party with Rowdy Version of "Shout"

Posted: 26 Jan 2015 04:00 PM PST

The Sundance Film Festival isn't just about watching new movies on the big screen -- it's also about re-creating them on the dance floor, too. One of the most anticipated parties at this year's festival was in celebration of the terrific documentary about the history of National Lampoon called Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead. Featuring rare, never-before-seen footage, the film tracks the comedic publication and production company behind classics like Animal House and Vacation from its beginnings in the 1970s all the way through 2010.  Speaking of Animal House, Sundance partygoers were especially excited for this party because it was to feature togas and a performance from none other than Otis Day, who you might remember from this...   At some point after...

Emma Watson Will Be Belle in a Live-Action 'Beauty and the Beast' for Disney

Posted: 26 Jan 2015 02:45 PM PST

Hermione Granger and Emma Watson go hand in hand, and they'll be associated together for generations to come, but now the former Harry Potter starlet is set to embody another iconic character. The Wrap has revealed Watson has been cast in a new, live-action rendition of Beauty and the Beast for Disney. Naturally, she'll be playing the beauty side of the title. And apparently it's always been a dream role of Watson, as she took to Facebook to share her excitement with fans: Bill Condon of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn fame will be directing the new musical adaptation of the classic fairy tale. The most recent pass on the script was written by Stephen Chobsky, who wrote and directed The Perks of Being a Wallflower starring Emma Watson. This is actually...

Harvey Weinstein Reveals Only One Person Knows the Real Ending to Tarantino's 'The Hateful Eight'

Posted: 26 Jan 2015 02:10 PM PST

A year ago Quentin Tarantino was up in arms when the script to his next movie, The Hateful Eight, ended up online after he'd reportedly shown it to only a small handful of select actors and their agents. He threatened to sue websites that posted it, and even declared that he was so angry about the leak that he was scrapping any plans to make the movie and would probably instead just publish the screenplay as a book instead. Fast-forward a year and Tarantino has thankfully simmered down a bit (not that his outrage wasn't justified). The Hateful Eight, a Western about a group of unsavory characters who all find themselves trapped together in a saloon during a blizzard, is not only now being made, it's currently being filmed. Tarantino started shooting it in glorious 70 mm...

Movie News: 'The Jetsons' Flying to Big Screen; a Sequel to 'The Strangers' and More

Posted: 26 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST

The Jetsons: Popular TV series The Jetsons may finally be returning to the big screen in animated form. The show ran for two seasons in the early 1960s and then for one more season in 1987; a movie version flew into theaters in 1990 with limited box office success. A live-action adaptation was in development for several years, most recently in 2012, but now Warner Bros. has hired Matt Lieberman to write a new script for an animated project. [Deadline]   The Strangers 2: Marcel Langenegger, who previously directed the 2008 mystery Deception, is in negotiations to direct a sequel to The Strangers. The original starred Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman as a couple who are stalked by a masked trio of home invaders. The sequel will follow the trio as they visit new terrors upon a...
