You Rank the Biggest Snubs and Surprises of the 2015 Oscar Nominations Posted: 16 Jan 2015 12:30 AM PST How about those Oscar nominations? Surely you've vented about the snubs and discussed your favorite surprises plenty since hearing the announcement this morning, but now it's time for you to rank the worst omissions and the greatest inclusions of the Academy Awards this year. Is the offense of The Lego Movie not being nominated for Best Animated Feature worse than Ava DuVernay not being recognized for directing Selma? Is the nomination for Laura Dern as Best Suppoting Actress for Wild much more of a pleasant shock than the one for Marion Cotillard as Best Actress for Two Days, One Night? You decide below. Posted: 15 Jan 2015 11:30 PM PST Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture: In case you think Disney's not laying on the synergy enough with its Pinocchio music in Avengers: Age of Ultron trailers, here's a mash-up of the two movies, clips from the former and audio from the latter (via Reddit): Check out Matt Ferguson's new posters for the Lord of the Rings trilogy (via Slashfilm): I thought of George Costanza the whole time while watching Force Majeure, so I agree this mash-up of the Oscar-snubbed foreign film and Seinfeld is perfect (via Reddit): This is a shot of a real building in Beijing, not a still from Blade Runner (via Puño on Twitter): This... Comics on Film: New 'Star Wars' and 'Ant-Man' Comics Give Fans Something to Look Forward To Posted: 15 Jan 2015 09:00 PM PST While comic books have become very popular to adapt, the relationship between the two mediums also moves in the other direction. There’s a long tradition of comic books adapting from and expanding on a whole slew of popular films, from the likes of Star Trek and RoboCop, to more modern examples like Interstellar and the current iteration of Planet of the Apes. With Marvel Comics now being a Disney subsidiary, the Star Wars franchise left behind its previous comic book shepherds at Dark Horse, and have made something of a homecoming to Marvel. The first Star Wars comics ever published were first made at the House of Ideas, and the publisher is rightfully treating the franchise with great care by giving superstar creators the... See How the 'Lego Movie' Directors Responded to the Year's Biggest Oscar Snub Posted: 15 Jan 2015 07:45 PM PST Sure, there were plenty of snubs to share around the gossip table when it came to this year's Academy Award nominees, but perhaps none are as devastating as The Lego Movie not receiving a nomination for Best Animated Film. Talk about something that definitely was not awesome. Was it because of its unusual animation style? Was it because parts of it were in live action? Or was it because Lord Business exacted his revenge upon those who brought him down? We may never know -- but what we do know is that the film's directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, are having fun with the snub, posting the following notes to Twitter earlier. It's okay. Made my own! pic.twitter.com/kgyu1GRHGR — philip lord (@philiplord) January 15, 2015 This is not a... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Tom Hardy Drops Out of 'Suicide Squad,' but Jake Gyllenhaal May Take His Place Posted: 15 Jan 2015 06:25 PM PST Last month Warner Bros. and DC Comics' Suicide Squad sent many fans' tongues wagging with the announcement that its villains-turned-heroes cast would be Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevinge as Enchantress, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg. Unfortunately now we have to cross that last name off the list. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hardy has dropped out of the production. But don't start shooting up red flags that David Ayer's movie is a sinking ship and Hardy was fleeing it. The fan favorite's departure is just due to bad scheduling. His filming on The Revenant alongside Leonardo DiCaprio is now going to take longer than expected, bumping back the filming of his Suicide... Forget the Oscars and Vote for the Best 2014 Horror Movies in 'Fangoria''s Chainsaw Awards Posted: 15 Jan 2015 05:45 PM PST Every year the Oscar nominations roll in, and every year they are immediately followed by everyone jumping into the fray to say the Oscars don't matter because they snubbed Movie A, they overlooked Movie B, and they gave way too many nominations to Movie C. Everyone disagreeing with Oscar nominations is a tradition that's as old as the Academy Awards themselves. But there is one thing we can all agree on: the Oscars don't care about horror movies. Granted, most horror movies these days don't actually deserve Oscars and it'd be silly to argue otherwise, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be celebrated. And nobody celebrates horror movies quite like Fangoria. Today the long-running genre magazine released its nominations for its annual Chainsaw... Michael Bay Enlists John Krasinski for His Benghazi Drama '13 Hours' Posted: 15 Jan 2015 04:15 PM PST When you first think of Michael Bay, the words "political drama" probably don't enter your mind. In fact, in a word cloud of keywords associated with Michael Bay movies, "political" and "drama" would be tiny, tiny specks of digital ink next to mass, bolded words like "explosions," "cars" and "Megan Fox." But the CGI heavy hitter is turning his back on clanging robots, at least for one movie. 13 Hours will be a dramatic retelling of the infamous September 11, 2012 attack on two United States installations in Benghazi, Libya. And now Bay has found his leading man for the movie, and it's none other than The Office star John Krasinski. Krasinski will be playing a Navy SEAL, which leads us to believe that maybe this... Posted: 15 Jan 2015 02:45 PM PST It’s pretty impossible for producer David Heyman to top the global success of the Harry Potter franchise, but it sure looks like he’s having fun trying. He’s since produced Alfonso Cuarón’s visually stunning Gravity and now it looks like he’s gearing up for another profitable franchise with Paddington-- and let’s not forget the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The legendary marmalade-addicted bear from deepest darkest Peru created by Michael Bond in the 1950s has received the big-screen treatment thanks to the VFX company behind Gravity and the voice of Ben Whishaw. Paddington (opening Friday) shows the young bear’s journey to the Brown family in London where he adapts to human life while getting himself into... Posted: 15 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST Mena: Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, who teamed up for last year's sci-fi action thriller Edge of Tomorrow, are in talks to reunite for the real-life drama Mena. Cruise would play Barry Seal, a pilot, gun runner and drug trafficker "for the CIA and the Medellin cartel." Seal was based in Mena, Arkansas in the 1980s, hence the title. [Deadline] Queen of the Desert: Heading for its world premiere at the Berlin film festival next month, Queen of the Desert has debuted its first official photo. Nicole Kidman and James Franco star in the true-life tale of Gertrude Bell, a multitalented woman who played a key role in the Middle East for the British Empire early in the 20th century. Robert Pattinson and Damian Lewis also star; Werner Herzog directed... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 15 Jan 2015 11:30 AM PST As always, the Oscar nominations announced this morning brought many surprises, both delightful and disappointing. But let's focus on the positive: Michael Keaton earned his first nod, for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Laura Dern earned her second, for Wild, and there is a lot of love here for Boyhood, Whiplash, Mr. Turner, Ida and The Grand Budapest Hotel, the last of which ties with Birdman for most nominations. It's also great to see some other favorites in the bunch, including nods for Nightcrawler, Citizenfour, the excellent documentary short White Earth and the civil rights drama Selma, which at least made an appearance among the eight Best Picture contenders. And the most exciting thing now is that it's still anyone's game for that... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
