The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Posted: 16 Jan 2015 10:29 PM PST

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week. Unfriended A horror movie that takes place entirely on a computer screen during a group video chat sounds like a downright ridiculous and impossible concept, but this first trailer for Universal Pictures’ Unfriended actually makes me think it might work. The story is timely, the visuals are surprisingly dynamic and the material is unnerving enough to put you on edge, even after just under three minutes of it. No, a good trailer doesn’t guarantee a good film, but this one did leave me rooting for Unfriended to wind up a winner.     Get Hard I’ve seen my fair share of Will Ferrell films and...

Professionalism First: Ranking the Films of Michael Mann

Posted: 16 Jan 2015 08:00 PM PST

Michael Mann has made movies about cops, criminals, serial killers, athletes, whistleblowers, Native American trackers and ancient Romanian demons, but all of his films have one trait in common: professionalism. The films of Michael Mann depict a tough, cold and unforgiving world where a single mistake can cost you your career or your life, but the protagonists of his films are men (and yeah, they're always men) who are properly equipped to survive this kind of life. Tough guys who take their jobs very seriously and often pay a high price for being good at what they do. With Blackhat about to hit theaters, it was time to revisit the filmography of Michael Mann and rank his films. But don't take this list too personally -- even the lowest ranked movie holds plenty of...

This Exclusive 'The Atticus Institute' Clip Shows Why You Should Never Mess with Psychics

Posted: 16 Jan 2015 06:50 PM PST

Do you like movies about secret government institutes, conspiracies, psychics and scientists that push the boundaries of human understanding? Good, we do, too. That's why it's easy for us to recommend a smart new horror movie called The Atticus Institute, which hits Blu-ray, DVD and Video On Demand platforms next week Written and directed by Chris Sparling (who wrote Buried and ATM), The Atticus Institute is about Dr. Henry West (William Mapother, who is always great to see), a scientist in the '70s who ran a program meant to test people's supernatural abilities. Over the years a few of his test subjects exhibit some amount of ESP promise, but everything is turned upside down when they come across a patient named Judith who is by far the most impressive...

The Last Sci-fi Blog: It's Totally Okay to Be Interested in 'Avatar' Sequels (and Other News)

Posted: 16 Jan 2015 05:20 PM PST

A handful of weird and/or interesting and/or off-putting science fiction movie-news stories have broken in the past few weeks, so let's not waste any time and just dive into the, shall we?   Avatar 2 Has Been Delayed Until 2017 In news that was met with shrugs all across the Internet, James Cameron announced that the first sequel to Avatar, one of three sequels being developed together, has been pushed back from 2016 to 2017. It's strange to see news about the follow-ups to the highest grossing movie of all time be greeted with almost no love and a whole lot of hate. In the past five years, Avatar has become weirdly lost, leaving no cultural footprint and vanishing into trivia instead of relevancy (you just know Disney is sweating bullets over that...

Posted: 16 Jan 2015 02:30 PM PST

Control, alt, repeat! It's time for another Poster-Crop Quiz! This week, in honor of Blackhat, we're celebrating our favorite cyber-savvy flicks. We've uploaded cropped posters from 10 films that each involve computer hackers. See if you can decode the images, leaving your guesses in the comment section below. The first person to correctly name all 10 posters will receive a shout-out in next week's quiz. It won't give you the power to hack the planet, but it's still pretty rad.  While some may argue the movie is primarily about dinosaurs or whatever, Jurassic Park will, to me, forever be the movie that made the UNIX system a household name. Last week's answers: Aliens, Road Warrior, Blade Runner, Reign of Fire, Brazil, Planet of the Apes, Dredd...
