The Last Sci-fi Blog: Examining the Current State of 'Star Wars' and 'Star Trek' Posted: 02 Jan 2015 10:00 PM PST When it comes to science fiction, you don't get much bigger than Star Wars and Star Trek. The grandfathers of modern popular sci-fi, these two franchises represent different sides of the same coin. One is fantastical and old-fashioned, telling stories of heroes and villains in an epic, operatic struggle. The other is optimistic and smart, telling tales of technology and ethics and diplomacy. Both have passionate fan bases. Both are essential pieces of modern popular culture. And both are in very, very interesting positions at the moment. In a bizarre turn of events, Star Wars and Star Trek have essentially switched places over the past few years and no one saw this coming. To fully understand the current status of Star Wars and Star Trek, it's important to remember that... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

These films have their own individual depictions of what the future could have looked like, but sadly they all got it wrong. See if you can identify the posters from the cropped images below, leaving your guesses in the comment section. The first person to correctly name all 10 will... The Best Movie Trailers of 2014 Posted: 02 Jan 2015 05:17 PM PST Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week – or in this case, the best movie trailers of 2014. 10. Kingsman: The Secret Service (WARNING: This trailer is NSFW!) What happens at the 100-second mark of this red-band trailer for Kingsman: The Secret Service shouldn’t work, but the action is such an outrageous blast, who would bother to second guess any of it? This promo takes risks, goes big and winds up selling the film as a wildly original spy thriller because of it. (WARNING: This trailer is NSFW!) 9. Big Hero 6 After that first teaser trailer, just about anything involving Baymax would have put a massive smile on my face... Disney Releases a Cruel Teaser Trailer for 'Ant-Man' Posted: 02 Jan 2015 03:37 PM PST Even though this teaser trailer for Ant-Man will probably infuriate you, you've got to hand it to Disney and Marvel -- they simply know how to put on a show. After all, this is the studio that celebrates its movies (and fans) by holding giant events when it announces new movies. And so when one of its next movies is about a guy who can shrink to the size of an ant, you can bet they're going to have some fun with the marketing. So, naturally, that's why the first teaser trailer for Peyton Reed's Ant-Man is ant sized. You'll see what we mean. The "human-sized" trailer will premiere at some point during the two-hour debut of Marvel's Agent Carter on Tuesday, January 6. Follow @PeterSHall... Watch a Preview for the Next 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Trailer Posted: 02 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST What are the Avengers looking at in the new promo photo above? They seem to be concerned, but maybe they're just watching some college football and anticipating the new trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Disney and Marvel will unveil the new spot on ESPN during the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship, which takes place on January 12 starting at 8:30 p.m. The exact time the trailer will air is not clear, nor can we be sure this will be an exclusive premiere without a simultaneous online debut. Let's not forget that the first Age of Ultron trailer was posted online ahead of its scheduled premiere during an episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., though that was because of an unfortunate early leak. Check out a teaser for the new trailer below... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
