2015 Sundance Film Festival Preview: The Most Anticipated Movies, Performances and More Posted: 22 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST When it comes to the world of independent film, all roads lead to Sundance. Not only does the Utah-based film festival kick-start the year in indie cinema, but it’s also now a breeding ground for Oscar movies. Last year’s Boyhood and Whiplash both premiered at Sundance, and have since gone on to receive multiple Oscar nominations including Best Picture. They join other recent films like Beasts of the Southern Wild, Winter’s Bone, 20 Feet from Stardom and Before Midnight in the growing list of Sundance films that have gone on to become among the year’s most talked-about movies. So what Sundance movies will we be talking about this year? With the festival kicking off on Thursday, we break it down for... The Geek Beat: The Geek Movie History of This Year's Oscar Nominees Posted: 21 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST This year's Academy Award nominations were announced last week, and as usual, the geekier side of Hollywood doesn't have much of a presence in the list of actors and filmmakers honored. Or does it? My sentiments on the Oscars' annual snubbing of comic book, sci-fi and fantasy films are well documented, but just because there aren't many geeky projects in the list of nominees, I'm not going to miss out on the party. In the interest of keeping things appropriately nerdy this award season, I've put together a movie mixtape of sorts that samples from the resumes of some of this year's Oscar nominees and offers up a pretty impressive list of geek-friendly movie fare created by, or starring, this year's contenders for Academy Award honors. Sure, some... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 21 Jan 2015 09:30 PM PST Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture: Check out this Millennium Falcon toy repurposed as a turntable (via Geekologie): Speaking of Star Wars, watch a montage of the computer interfaces in A New Hope (via Gizmodo): This is a great piece of Ghostbusters fan art, but Venkman's being sort of a jerk (via Geek Tyrant): In honor of the release of Mortdecai, the latest Honest Trailer is for the Pirates of the Caribbean movies: I'm not sure why, but here's a painting of Thorin from The Hobbit with Red from Fraggle Rock by the artist Euclase (via Live for Films): Speaking of weird mash-ups... Exclusive 'The Boxtrolls' Clip Shows How One of the Movie's Most Complicated Creations Was Made Posted: 21 Jan 2015 08:00 PM PST Even if you don't love Laika's movies (though how could you not?!), it's impossible to deny the sheer craft that goes in to making the stop-motion wonders found in ParaNorman, Coraline and, most recently, The Boxtrolls. In an age where every major animated movie is done in CGI, it is the last big giant clinging to a more old-school, traditional animation method that was around long before computers were used in filmmaking. Of course, the brilliant minds at Laika aren't crazy enough to ignore all the benefits of working with computers. And so their stop-motion animation process is heavily complemented by those dang-fangled thinking machines. But they still try to keep things as real and tactile as they can, which is why, as you can see in the below clip, one of... Nicolas Cage to Hunt Osama bin Laden for 'Borat' Director in New Comedy Posted: 21 Jan 2015 06:31 PM PST Nicolas Cage gets a bit of a bum reputation these days as a bad actor. That's just simply not true. He has far too many great movies with truly unique performances for that to be the case. But, to be fair, he's popped up in quite a few duds in the recent years, many of which went straight to home video. So while his reputation may not be entirely accurate, it's at least understandable. Hopefully Army of One changes that. Directed by Larry Charles (Borat), this new satire is based loosely on the real life of Gary Faulkner, a construction worker from Colorado who quit his day job to travel to the other side of the world and hunt down Osama bin Laden. Obviously he didn't succeed, but he certainly got up to many shenanigans in the process. For example, his most... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The 'Gravity' Cinematographer Has Something Even Crazier Planned for Filming 'The Revenant' Posted: 21 Jan 2015 06:30 PM PST Today Entertainment Weekly unveiled the first image of Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant, directed by Birdman's Alejandro González Iñárritu. And while it's cool to see the normally clean-shaven DiCaprio all grizzled up for this period piece about a frontiersman who seeks revenge against the men who left him to die after a bear attack, the image is far from the most interesting part of the story. The Revenant is being shot by Emmanuel Lubezki, the boundary-pushing cinematographer behind the distinctive looks of movies like Children of Men, Gravity, and most recently Iñárritu's own Birdman. And while Lubezki is known for being the master of long, complicated shots, he and his Birdman director have given themselves a different... Take a Tour of Matt Zoller Seitz's Glorious New 'Grand Budapest Hotel' Book Posted: 21 Jan 2015 06:29 PM PST If you're a fan of Wes Anderson, you likely already have Matt Zoller Seitz's wonderful 2013 book on the filmmaker, titled The Wes Anderson Collection. And even if you don't love all of Anderson's movies, it's still an essential part of any cinephile's collection because of all its focus on the various crafts that went into producing everything from Bottle Rocket (the original short) through Moonrise Kingdom. Also, it's just a darn good read, very in-depth and also very splashy in its design. There's so much to learn about and look at and appreciate. Since its publication, Anderson has made The Grand Budapest Hotel. And now Zoller Seitz has an addendum in the form of a whole other book, titled The Wes Anderson Collection: The Grand Budapest Hotel... Academy Award-nominated Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) is also under consideration for the starring role. The movie is due out on December 16, 2016. [Heat Vision] Fables: Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service) is writing a new draft of a screenplay for a proposed movie version of Fables, a long-running comic book series created by Bill Willingham.
