The Last Horror Blog: 2015's Most Anticipated Horror Movies

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST

Now that we’ve officially closed the book on 2014, and settled into a brand-spankin’ new year, this feels like as good a time as any to take a look at what fright-film aficionados have to look forward to in 2015. The early results look mostly promising – offering up a mixture of sequels to tried-and-true titles (Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister) while seasoning with some of the indie magic that made 2014 so memorable (It Follows). If we learned anything over the course of the past 12 months, it’s that we should expect the unexpected when it comes to modern horror cinema – there’s bound to be at least one or two movies that wind up on 2015’s Year’s Best lists that no one saw coming, but if I were a gambling man...

Comics on Film: What the New 'Zombies vs. Robots' Comic Reveals About the Upcoming Movie

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST

In the summer of 2000 when the original X-Men film hit at the box office, it sparked an entirely new era for the creation of motion pictures derived from comic books. Of course, superheroes have persistently been some of the most popular movies ever created, with films like The Dark Knight and The Avengers grossing $1 billion internationally, but one thing that Hollywood has always wanted was a hook for a movie provided by a good idea. Current titles like Brian K. Vaughan's Saga or Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead have helped to prove that, in addition to popular past titles like Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher or Grant Morrison's The Invisibles, they all help to illustrate that...

You Rank the Best Movies That Debuted at the Sundance Film Festival

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 10:00 PM PST

As of today, another Sundance is upon us. For more than 30 years now, from a time before it was even called the Sundance Film Festival, we've been looking to the Park City, Utah event as a beacon and a tastemaker of independent cinema. What will be the breakouts of 2015? And how will they fit into such a rich history? Sundance has seen major breakouts and/or introduced us to the work of such filmmakers as the Coen brothers, Christopher Nolan, Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino, Darren Aronofsky, Rian Johnson and, out of last year's fest and now an Oscar darling, Damien Chazelle. Below you'll find 20 titles that not only screened but world premiered at the Sundance Film Festival between its years of 1985 and 2014. You won't find some of your favorites if they debuted...

Today in Movie Culture: 'Rocky,' 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' '2001,' Benedict Cumberbatch and More

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 09:00 PM PST

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   The nonfamous guys in this photo got a huge surprise when they ran up the steps of Philadelphia's Museum of Art, mimicking the iconic scene in Rocky: the man himself, Sylvester Stallone, was standing there with his family, in town actually making another Rocky sequel (Creed). He graciously provided the following group selfie (via Live for Films):   What if Al Pacino had played Han Solo? Maybe it'd have looked something like this mash-up of Scarface and Star Wars (via Geek Tyrant):   Still looking for the perfect outfit to wear to the movies to see The Imitation Game? Here you go, die-hard Benedict Cumberbatch fans...

Watch a Drunken Will Ferrell Attack a Cheerleader at a Basketball Game

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 08:00 PM PST

If you happened to be at last night's Pelicans game in New Orleans, you were treated to quite the bonus surprise when someone who looked and sounded an awful lot like a drunk Will Ferrell took to the court and attempted to make a long-distance shot to win a prize. You were greeted with even more of a shock when Ferrell failed miserably, instead drilling a nearby cheerleader in the head with the ball, dropping her to the floor. Sadly it wasn't for a bizarre Space Jam remake. And no, Ferrell wasn't actually drunk, as he appears in the clip. It was all for a scene from a new comedy called Daddy's Home that reunites Ferrell with his The Other Guys costar Mark Wahlberg. In it they play two men competing for the affections of the same woman. We're guessing this...

See How Movie Theaters Kept Audiences Quiet in 1912

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 06:30 PM PST

For as long as we can remember, there have been these little videos that play before movies in theaters reminding us to keep quiet and respect those around us. But just how long have theaters been doing this? Believe it or not, you can go all the way back to 1912 for the first examples of movie-theater etiquette guides, and while some instructions don't work for today's audiences (specifically the no whistling and the intermission), many still apply over 100 years later. (We especially love the one that asks people to applaud with their hands only.) Thanks to the Library of Congress, here's what it would've looked like to visit movie theaters in 1912.     MORE FROM AROUND THE...

'The Blob' Remake Is Back with the Director of 'Con Air'

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 05:05 PM PST

A few years ago, right before Halloween II hit theaters, Rob Zombie was attached to a remake of the sci-fi/horror classic The Blob, about a gelatinous creature that overtakes an idyllic American town, growing in size with each new person it eats. Immediately fans of the original film groaned, and understandably so, since it was hard to picture Zombie's particular brand of grungy horror working well with the Americana-versus-monster vibe of the original movie. Thankfully that version never came to pass. But that doesn't mean the world was spared a remake of The Blob indefinitely. News has hit today that Simon West (Con Air, The Expendables 2) is heading up a new redo of the movie. We really don't know anything about the new version yet as far as story goes, but this...

Update: Jake Gyllenhaal Will Not Take Tom Hardy's Place in 'Suicide Squad'

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST

Update 1/22/15: As it turns out, Jake Gyllenhaal has passed on the role of Rick Flag in Suicide Squad, which was indeed offered to him after Tom Hardy had to back out. The reason going around is that the start date would just be cutting things too close for his other projects. Previously: Last month Warner Bros. and DC Comics' Suicide Squad sent many fans' tongues wagging with the announcement that its villains-turned-heroes cast would be Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Boomerang, Cara Delevinge as Enchantress, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg. Unfortunately now we have to cross that last name off the list. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hardy has dropped out of the production. But don't start shooting...
