What Movie Character Should Guest-Star in Another Movie Franchise? Posted: 14 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST Today we heard talk of two projects in development where characters from one movie franchise could find their way into another. First there was the unconfirmed report that Marvel and Sony have finalized a deal to get Spider-Man into Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1. Then there was the confirmation of a seemingly absurd notion of a mash-up of Jump Street series and the Men in Black series -- both also Sony properties. That second one came straight from 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street codirector Phil Lord. "It’s still a crazy idea," he told MTV News, "and we only do things that seem like they’re going to be terrible." Combining franchises is not that fresh an idea, but normally they only occur in parody trailers and other viral video... Posted: 14 Jan 2015 10:00 PM PST Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture: You know this isn't that far off from actually happening. Here's a trailer for DC and Marvel vs. Star Wars (via Geek Tyrant): I wish this was also not that far off from happening. Here's a trailer for a remake of Taken as a Super Mario Bros. movie (via Live for Films): Steven Soderbergh reedited 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's not a video that we can embed, so check out the cut on his website, Extension 765. For visual stimuli in the meantime, here's another one of those illustrated publicity stills from Kubrickonia we linked to the other day: Check out this four-year-old Bruce Lee fan mimicking his hero's moves (via... Sam Rockwell Says the 'Poltergeist' Remake Is More Adventure, Less 'The Conjuring' Posted: 14 Jan 2015 07:50 PM PST Sam Rockwell has just revealed more about the Poltergeist remake (which was on our list of most anticipated 2015 movies) than anyone involved with the production has so far. Unfortunately, what he said is probably going to annoy some fans. We don't think it should, but we'll get to that in a second. Before that, let's go over the key quote: While talking to Collider, Rockwell said: “The 10-year-old boy is really the protagonist this time. JoBeth Williams was the protagonist for the most part in the first one and now the kid, it’s really through his point-of-view [sic]. So it’s more of a kids’ movie so I don’t know if it’s gonna be like rated-R scary." That's the quote that most people will probably see and then... There's a Serious Chance '28 Days Later' Could Still Get Another Sequel Posted: 14 Jan 2015 06:30 PM PST It's been nearly eight years since 28 Weeks Later came out. Nobody talks about that sequel nearly as often as they do the original film, which is a shame because it's actually pretty dang great and one of the best zombie movies of the 2000s. It's also understandable, however, because the original 28 Days Later was such an important and influential film that obviously people are going to name-drop it before anything that came after. But maybe now more people will start to think about 28 Weeks Later again, as producer Alex Garland has revealed that he and director Danny Boyle haven't forgotten about the franchise they created. In fact, they're actively talking about making a new one. Garland's busy promoting his directorial debut, Ex Machina (which hits U.K... Big Marvel Rumor Says Spider-Man Will Star in 'Avengers: Infinity War' Posted: 14 Jan 2015 04:55 PM PST Fans have been clammoring for years for Spider-Man to sling webs alongside Captain America, Iron Man and the Hulk, but unfortunately the dreaded world of corporate licensing has thwarted that possibility time and time again. You see, Marvel had licensed Spidey to Sony long before it started its current Marvel Cinematic Universe, and since Sony kept making movies with him, Marvel couldn't take him back. It's the same reason that the X-Men, which belong to Fox, can't appear in any of the Disney movies, either. That could all change soon enough. Or, if this big rumor from the folks at Latino Review is to be believed, it already has changed. According to their report, Sony and Marvel have come to an arrangement that would mean Spider-Man can now swing into the MCU, and... 'Star Wars' Debuts, a 'Galaxy Quest' Sequel, and More Geeky Things to Read, Watch and Buy in January Posted: 14 Jan 2015 03:30 PM PST A new year is here, and it's going to be a big one for fans of movies from the geekier side of Hollywood (which is starting to occupy a pretty large area lately). Although the early months of the year tend to be pretty slow for big-screen projects, there's more than enough comics, collectibles and other assorted geekery to make the wait until summer blockbuster season more tolerable. Here are some of the things to look out for throughout January: Click on each image to enlarge What to Read Back before Dark Horse Comics expanded the Star Wars universe with a long list of critically acclaimed comics set before, after and during the events of the films, Marvel Comics published a well-received run of Star Wars stories that began with the events of 1977's Star... 'Avatar' Sequel Pushed Back to Christmas 2017 with Others to Follow in 2018 and 2019 Posted: 14 Jan 2015 02:05 PM PST Given how long it took James Cameron to make Avatar, we can be patient for the next one. And that's good, because we now have to wait a little while longer. As relayed by Deadline, the follow-up to the 2009 box office record breaker is no longer able to meet its planned December 2016 release date. We've heard it before -- at one point, Avatar 2 was set for Christmas 2014 -- so this isn't surprising. The new aim is for Christmas 2017, and hopefully that one sticks because it means the other two parts in a trilogy being shot simultaneously are also pushed back. Avatar 3 is due in December 2018 and Avatar 4 will hit in 2019, exactly a decade after the original. With so much time passed since that first, groundbreaking 3D sci-fi epic, some... Posted: 14 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST The Big Short: Brad Pitt, Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling will star in The Big Short, based on the best-selling book by Michael Lewis (Moneyball). The book "tells the story of the build-up [sic] of the housing and credit bubble during the 2000s that led to the financial crisis of 2007-2010." Pitt is serving as one of the producers; Adam McKay (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues) is writing the screenplay and will direct. [Variety] Escape from New York: After many rumors over the years, a remake of John Carpenter's 1981 action-drama Escape from New York is finally, officially underway. The original starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a convicted felon who is forced into rescue service in 1997 after the president's plane has crashed in Manhattan...
