'Star Trek: Discovery': Bryan Fuller Out as Showrunner

Posted:

2016 Summer TCA Tour - Day 6"Star Trek: Discovery" has to live up to high expectations, so a recent development may raise some eyebrows.

Not long after the series' January 2017 premiere date was pushed back several months, the revival is now down one showrunner. Bryan Fuller, one of the show's co-creators, has stepped away from those day-to-day responsibilities, according to Variety. Apparently, he hasn't had enough time to devote to the series, and CBS didn't want another delay.

Fuller certainly does have a lot in the pipeline. On top of the "Star Trek" revival, he has been writing and executive producing two more upcoming series: Starz's "American Gods" and NBC's reboot of "Amazing Stories." Something had to give, and unfortunately for Trekkies, that something was "Discovery."

It is not all bad news, though: Fuller will remain actively involved as an executive producer. Meanwhile, fellow EPs Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts will take over his now vacated showrunner role, and Akiva Goldsman is reportedly likely to provide producing support. No further delays have been announced, so it appears production will begin as planned in November.

The change-up isn't ideal, but the show will go on.

A 'Pretty Little Liars' Tell-All Special Will Unveil New Secrets

Posted:

Freeform's Pretty Little Liars - Season SevenWe won't have "A" to reveal all of the "Pretty Little Liars" secrets once the show ends, but the cast will take over.

With Season 7 closing out the series, Freeform has announced that the final episode will be followed by a "tell-all" special. The Liars -- Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Aria (Lucy Hale), Emily (Shay Mitchell), and Ali (Sasha Pieterse) -- along with executive producer I. Marlene King, will all be on hand to spill the show's behind-the-scenes secrets. The network describes the special as "unbarred and uncensored," so it promises to be juicy.

The tell-all aftershow will extend what is already set to be a long goodbye; it adds an extra hour of "Pretty Little Liars" intrigue to a night that will feature a two-hour-long finale. That might soothe at least some of the hurt fans are feeling as they prepare for the end.

The final 10 episodes will premiere in April when "Pretty Little Liars" returns for Season 7.

Watch Lady Gaga Hijack 'The Late Late Show with James Corden'

Posted:

Saturday Night Live - Season 42Lady Gaga did more than just drive James Corden to work for "Carpool Karaoke" -- the pop star also crashed the rest of the latest "Late Late Show" episode.

When it came time for Corden to come out an deliver his opening monologue, Lady Gaga took the stage instead. Stealing the host's thunder and calling herself "Lady Haha," she started in on the usual topical jokes. Yet, she only got through a few before a pants-less Corden ran onstage to reclaim his show.

The two staged a faux argument over her supposed hijacking, but they quickly reached a compromise that viewers' loved: Gaga got to stay as part of the band. Naturally, she didn't have to hide away -- she performed one of the singles from her new album, "Joanne," and interacted with guests.
Another highlight of the show was Lady Gaga's "Carpool Karaoke" segment. Between that and her unexpected appearance, the audience got a healthy dose of Gaga.
"The Late Late Show with James Corden" airs weeknights at 12:37 a.m. ET on CBS.

'Toy Story 4' Delayed, 'Incredibles 2' Taking Its Release Date

Posted:

Toy Story 3The toys need a little more time, so here come superheroes to save the day.

Pixar is swapping the release dates for sequels "Toy Story 4" and "The Incredibles 2." The latter will now open June 15, 2018, a year earlier than planned. "Toy Story 4," meanwhile, will be delayed until June 21, 2019. The move is reportedly due to the accelerated schedule of "Incredibles 2."

The first "Incredibles" director Brad Bird is back to write and direct the sequel, which will bow 14 years after the original opened. Very little is known about the follow-up.

As for "Toy Story 4," it's been described as the studio's first romantic comedy and is being written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack." John Lasseter returns to direct, after taking a break with the third movie.

Pixar has been very reserved about which of its properties get sequels: Only "Toy Story" and "Cars" have gotten multiple outings, and "Monsters, Inc." and "Finding Nemo" have each had one follow-up in "Monsters University" and "Finding Dory."

After "Cars 3" (June 2017), "Incredibles 2" and "Toy Story 4," Pixar has stated it wants to concentrate on original films.

'Sherlock' Season 4 Sets Premiere Date

Posted:

Sherlock221B Baker Street will soon be open for business again.

"Sherlock" season 4 has set its premiere date: Jan. 1, 2017. The first episode, "The Six Thatchers," will air on the same day in the U.S. and the U.K., on PBS and BBC One respectively.

Stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as the genius sleuth Sherlock and his friend and crime-solving partner, John Watson. Cumberbatch has previously hinted that season 4 might be the mystery drama's last.

"It feels like the end of an era, to be honest," the actor continued. "It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately."

As usual, not much is known about the season, other than the return appearance of Moriarty (Andrew Scott) and the addition of a new villain played by Toby Jones. The episode titles have provided a few clues, though; the premiere could be based on the Arthur Conan Doyle story "Six Napoleons" about someone breaking busts of the French general. The busts of Napoleon could be replaced by busts of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

'Mad Men' Creator Matthew Weiner's Next Series to Stream on Amazon

Posted:

AMC Emmy After Party 2011This time around, Matthew Weiner has no shortage of network suitors.

Sixteen years ago, Weiner shopped his pilot script for "Mad Men" to HBO and Showtime, but both networks passed. Years passed before AMC finally picked it up.

Now — after "Mad Men" won 16 Emmys and five Golden Globes — Weiner is ready to make his second series, and six entities engaged in a heated bidding war for the project, according to Deadline. The lucky winner was the Weinstein Company and Amazon, which will pay $70 million for the eight-episode series.

Weiner won't be returning to the '60s for his new project. Instead, Deadline reports it will be an anthology series (all the rage right now) set in the present day and in locations around the world. He will write and executive produce, as well as direct about half of the episodes.

That's a huge chunk of change for a television series, but Weiner's track record speaks for itself. "Mad Men" made AMC a player in prestige scripted series, won boatloads of awards, garnered heaps of critical acclaim, and became a pop culture phenomenon.

'Assassin's Creed' Video Shows Off Some Crazy Parkour Moves

Posted:

Assassin's CreedMovies adapted from video games often rely heavily on computer effects to a detrimental outcome (hello, "Warcraft"), but the upcoming "Assassin's Creed" is avoiding that stereotype.

In this new featurette, director Justin Kurzel and star Michael Fassbender emphasize the practical effects of the movie. "In an era where there's a lot of CGI, we wanted to have as much old-school, real location shoots as possible," Fassbender explains.
Kurzel talks about how Spain becomes almost like a character in the movie, and also talks up the movie's parkour scenes, which were a huge draw for fans of the game.

"Assassin's Creed" centers on Fassbender's prisoner Callum Lynch, who is forced by a mysterious entity to live out the life of his 15th century ancestor in the hope of finding a valuable lost object. He discovers he's descended from a secret society called Assassins, and begins to gain the skills and knowledge to fight against the entity in his present day.

The movie reunites Fassbender with his "Macbeth" director, as well as his co-star Marion Cotillard. It opens in theaters December 21.

New 'Game of Thrones' Set Videos Spoil Big Reunion, Character's Return

Posted:

Game of ThronesWinter is coming, and so are more "Game of Thrones" season 7 spoilers.

Photos and videos from the HBO drama's sets in Spain have been leaking for a couple of weeks and have already shown us a much-anticipated meeting between two lead characters and the emergence of a long-lost character. Now, new production images spoil the reunion of two characters who last saw each other in the pilot.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

In this video posted by Agriturismo Santa Klara, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) comes face to face with Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen). And their reunion is not sweet:

Although we can't hear their dialogue, it's safe to assume that Jon is still pissed that Theon betrayed the Starks, which led to the disappearance of his younger brothers, Bran and Rickon (and now the latter is dead). Theon tried to make up for it a little by helping Jon's sister, Sansa, escape, but clearly, some hard feelings remain. Here's a better look: Theon appears to be arriving at Dragonstone, where Jon has his huge inroduction to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). But where is he coming from? And why isn't his sister, Yara, with him?

Other set photos show the return of Iain Glen's Jorah Mormont. In season 6, Daenerys dismissed him from her service to find a cure for his greyscale. Does his presence indicate Jorah found the cure?

Perhaps not, though. What's most interesting is that Jorah appears to be taking his leave of his queen — along with Jon, Davos Seaworth, and ... Gendry! Where is this motley crew heading? Could Jon and Davos be returning north and taking Jorah back to Bear Island, currently ruled by his young cousin, Lady Lyanna Mormont?

We'll find out when "Game of Thrones" season 7 airs sometime this summer.

Felicity Jones Almost Killed Tom Hanks in a Car Crash

Posted:

APTOPIX Britain Inferno Photo Call"Inferno" was almost too perfect a title. If you head out to see the movie this weekend, keep an eye out for a car chase scene where -- in another take -- Felicity Jones accidentally drove Tom Hanks into a wall. Oops!

The Ron Howard film shot in Italy, and the narrow Italian streets were almost the death of our hero, as Jones explained in her appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

"It was my first time driving an A-list movie star and nearly killing him," Jones said. He character, Sienna Brooks, was at the wheel, with Hanks's Robert Langdon next to her. She had to drive out of a parking lot/"car park," and that's where the trouble happened:

"So then we were coming out, and there's quite a sharp corner, and the Italian streets are pretty tiny. And for some reason my character had the most enormous car they could find. So just as I was very coolly trying to turn this corner and I was staying in line as I was turning it, I basically bashed the entire side of the car with Tom into the wall. It was nearly sort of game over. But luckily he's very cool."

Kimmel wanted to know if they charged her for that, and took it out of her pay. "Yeah," Jones joked, "I mean they did say 'That's it. Job's over, you're going back to England.'" Not really, though, which is another reason why being a movie star is such an awesome gig. Where else can you play human bumper cars with the likes of Tom Hanks and walk away scot-free? (Plus, she got to negotiate the best contract for this film.)

Here's that clip from Felicity Jones, plus another video, where she gives Kimmel his own Jyn Erso toy from "Star Wars: Rogue One":

Mel Gibson: 'Braveheart' Has an Hour of Deleted Scenes Ready for Extended Cut

Posted:

Well, they didn't get dressed up for nothing, so why not reveal ALL of the never-before-seen footage from "Braveheart"?

Mel Gibson is currently promoting his new film "Hacksaw Ridge," but Collider took some time to ask him about "Braveheart." Gibson's 1995 Oscar winner is already pretty long, but it turns out there are plenty of scenes on the cutting room floor that Gibson would be willing to repackage for an extended special edition of some kind -- if someone else is willing to do the leg work to track the footage down.

Gibson told Collider the "kitchen sink" assembly cut was about 3 hours and 45 minutes, which they cut to 2 hours, 48 minutes -- not including credits. "So we lost almost an hour," Gibson said. "There's almost an hour lying on the floor someplace, but I think it's the right hour." Collider asked if there a lot of scenes that never saw the light of day. "Oh yeah," Gibson confirmed. "There's literally an hour someplace. There's an hour of stuff."

Collider asked if anyone has ever approached him to do an extended cut. Here's Gibson's response:

"People have mentioned, 'It's a big deal, wooh.' I don't know, somebody -- Fox or Paramount -- want to finance that, go ahead. They want to dig up the footage, I'll slap it back together. And then we'll get Steve Rosenblum, who's a great editor. I've worked with him since a couple of times. I think he'd be up for it. That was one of the highlights of his life, I think. That was a good flick."

Gibson also remembered some sequences that were taken out, and he sounded willing to revisit the film to talk about what was cut and why. So Fox, Paramount, or Whoever should definitely get on this. There was a two-disc special collector's edition released back in 2007, but it didn't include the hour of deleted scenes, and hardcore fans would love to see this mystery footage.

Millie Bobby Brown on Her 'Weird' First Kiss & 'Friends' Star's Wise Advice

Posted:

That sweet peck between Mike and Eleven on "Stranger Things" was Millie Bobby Brown's first kiss. And it was awkward. In a new Interview magazine chat, Millie, 12, talked about that first kiss, plus the best advice she has received to date (which came from David Schwimmer, believe it or not).

Apparently Millie and "Dance Moms" star Maddie Ziegler, 14, are BFFs, so Maddie was the one who interviewed Millie in the Q&A. The result was an informal, realistic talk between middle-school-age girls who just happen to be pretty famous.

Millie and Finn were both recently on "The Tonight Show" where they discussed the kiss...
... and Maddie slyly referenced her friend's reaction in the Interview Q&A:

ZIEGLER: ...It was really cute. Oh, what was I gonna say? We were talking about "Stranger Things" being your favorite show because you get to kiss Finn.

BROWN: You're an evil, evil person. You know that? Are you aware of that, Maddie? Yeah, I did have to kiss Finn. At the end of the day, it's only acting, and it's something you have to do, and I would do anything for the show. I cut my hair, I kissed Finn. It was definitely strange. It was, like, my first kiss, so it was kind of weird. But then, like, when I'd done it, I thought, "Wow. It makes sense for the storyline."

ZIEGLER: It was priceless, like, your reactions. You were like, "Kissing sucks." And then Finn ...

BROWN: Finn reacted quite well and I didn't. [laughs] I felt really bad afterwards.

ZIEGLER: It was funny because, obviously, boys are attracted to you. Pretty cool.

BROWN: It's in a strange way. I don't know if they're like in love with the character. Like, [they want to brag] "I know the real character, guys."

ZIEGLER: But you've become super close with your cast mates. It's crazy—you were telling me that you're literally the only girl, besides Winona [Ryder].

BROWN: I am the only girl, and the boys have their squads. They have their group, and it's definitely difficult because they're boys and talk about boy stuff. They talk about girls and video games. I definitely need to talk about normal things a girl would talk about. They're like my big brothers. They annoy me, but we are very, very close...

Haha. Yes, you keep those boys at a distance.

68th Primetime Emmy Awards - InsiderMillie and her "Stranger Things" co-stars performed at the 2016 Emmys, where David Schwimmer was there with the "People vs. O.J. Simpson" team, and apparently the "Friends" star offered Millie some sage advice.

Here's that part of the Interview magazine Q&A:

ZIEGLER: I'm curious, what's the best advice you've gotten, and who was it from?

BROWN: I think David Schwimmer honestly, because a lot of people say to me, "Stay grounded, be humble." I get that a lot, and I'm sure you get that a lot, Maddie. David Schwimmer was just like, "You need to love what you do." And I think that's really nice. Just love your work. My family has given me great advice saying, you know, "Don't work too hard." And it's really nice to have someone like that—you know that they love you. It's nice to have famous people love you.

She said she can't wait to get back to work on "Stranger Things" Season 2. "It's like I crave it, and when I get on set—it's not just that I love what I do—I love meeting new people. The crew, it's like being around my family, and I know them very well. It's really nice to go to work every day. It makes so much sense to just love what you do and go to work every day to get to get to work." Just don't feel like you have to work when you're only 12.

Read the full interview. "Stranger Things" Season 2 is expected on Netflix in 2017.

A 'Walking Dead' Fan Placed This Perfect Obit in the Paper for Glenn

Posted:

You know, we all should've done this. Plenty of "The Walking Dead" fans said they wanted time off after Sunday's gruesome Season 7 premiere, but did those same grieving fans call up the local newspaper to place obituaries for Glenn or Abraham?

The obit for Glenn is beautiful, and he does deserve this kind of tribute after seven seasons on the AMC show.

As the obit begins, under the headline "RIP, Glenn": "Glenn Rhee, husband, father-to-be, warrior and friend departed from this world October 23rd. He was 32." They write that Glenn was born and raised in Michigan to Korean immigrant parents (actor Steven Yeun, who is 32, was born in South Korea and raised in Michigan) and they reference Glenn's history of delivering pizzas before The Walker Apocalypse happened.

The whole listing is great, and it's touching to see this hero honored for the right reasons:

"He exhibited top-notch leadership when his leader and mentor was either unavailable or unable to lead, and his commitment to moral principles in a world-gone-mad breathed hope and promise to those around him (who meant him no harm)."

There's a bit of shade toward the end, when they list who he is survived by: After his loving wife Maggie and their unborn child, and a few others, they write "and various other adoptive family members and associates that will likely be more memorable in their eventual deaths than they ever were in life." Burn!

The last part is arguably the best:

"In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations of LITERALLY ANYONE WHO CAN HELP THEM DEFEAT NEGAN be made in his memory."

Seriously.

UPDATE: The author of the obit has revealed himself, and you can see the full opinion column next to Glenn's obit here:

"The Walking Dead" Season 7 continues Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.

What's Next for 'Arrow,' 'Legends of Tomorrow' and That Superhero Crossover

Posted:

arrow, legends of tomorrow crossoverEver since the DC Universe exploded onto The CW with the introduction of "Arrow" in 2012, writer/producer Marc Guggenheim has been one of the prime architects translating both long-standing and fresh comic book mythology into TV stories.

Now, whenever Guggenheim, a frequent comic book writer himself, offers up a preview of what's ahead for the two series he's currently guiding, "Arrow" and "Legends of Tomorrow" -- plus a tidbit or two on that upcoming crossover that includes "The Flash" and "Supergirl" -- one thing becomes clear: every time one of the series turns over a big new reveal, there's even more big things to come with each revelation.

"Arrow"

On Ragman Rory Reagan's reaction to knowledge Felicity was responsible for the destruction in Havenrock:

I feel like he's got a very human reaction. He reacts to it the way I think you might expect him to, but not in an overblown way. I think it's very grounded and very human.

We talked a lot about that storyline, and Rory's point of view and Felicity's point of view. I will say that a lot of times, you write something and you do a storyline and it has a very different reaction than the one you expected. I think we were all taken aback, not in a bad way but just surprised, that there was so much outrage over Felicity's actions in Episode 421. People were upset at Felicity, somehow, for saving Monument Point, at the expense of Havenrock.

It was fun to actually get a chance to articulate the anti-Felicity point of view, and the pro-Felicity point of view. It made for a very interesting moral dilemma, and we had a chance to play with that.

On whether Diggle and Lyla will become aware of the changes to their family as a result of "Flashpoint":

I always say that, on "Arrow," there is no secret that doesn't eventually get discovered.

On how the story of newly introduced D.A. Adrian Chase, who becomes the superhero Vigilante in the comic books, will move forward:

Episode 507 is where we show our cards the most, in terms of Adrian. What's fun about the way we're writing and portraying Adrian is that we're writing with a certain amount of comic book knowledge. And if you're not a comic book fan, it will just fly over your head and that's totally fine. It's like an adult joke in a Pixar movie.

But if you are familiar with the comic, you'll probably interpret certain scenes in a very specific way, and that's fun for us. I don't think we've ever really used their comic book trajectory and destiny, in this fashion, before, as part of the storytelling.

On Quentin Lance's path as he attempts to recover from alcoholism while serving as Oliver's Deputy Mayor:

It's definitely not an easy one. Thea's decision to make him Deputy Mayor is very noble on Thea's part, but it's also very naive, given the amount of demons that Quentin is wrestling with. It's not going to be as simple as just having a new job title. It's going to get a lot harder before it gets easier. It's Arrow, so that probably stands to reason.

On when the briefly glimpsed Prometheus will return as a more direct threat to Team Arrow:

Episode 506 is when things really start to kick into a higher gear. It's a 23 episode season. This is true for all the shows, especially when you have a big bad that's introduced in the first episode, but you have to strike a balance between it becoming the Prometheus show and becoming very repetitive, and teasing it out. Episode 506 felt right to us because 505 felt like the end of a chapter, and then 506 kicks things into another gear.

On when Felicity's still-secret romance will come to light:

It's the classic thing of "no secrets stay a secret forever" on Arrow. Oliver is going to find out about Felicity's boyfriend in Episode 505. Because, I'm spoiling that, I'm not going to spoil when Felicity's boyfriend finds out that Felicity is working with Arrow.

On how Curtis Holt still has some training to do before claiming the title of Mr. Terrific:

I think he's still got a ways to go on his journey. For one thing, that's not the final costume. We decided to give some of the recruits what we call "proto costumes." They have to earn the final one.

In terms of all of these characters becoming or being vigilantes, Curtis has the furthest to go. The evolution of Curtis, from comic relief and sidekick to butt-kicking superhero, is a big throw, in my opinion. The only way to do it properly is to watch him try, and then watch him fail, and watch him fail, and watch him fail. So, it's going to be a real struggle for him, as we go through the fifth season.

One the challenge of having "Arrow's" landmark 100th episode fall within the four-series fall crossover while still retaining its own distinction:

The challenge was that we've only got 42 minutes, and it's the middle part of a three-part story. At the same time, it's the 100th episode. When the news broke that the 100th episode was also going to be the cross-over episode, people were up and down my Twitter and Greg [Berlanti]'s Twitter. In a very positive way, people didn't want to feel like the cross-over was hijacking what should be a really seminal episode and moment for Arrow, which is wonderful.

I don't want to spoil it, but Greg came up with an idea that really does allow us to have our cake and eat it too. I haven't seen the episode all cut together yet, but it has some incredibly iconic moments. It is a love letter to the show. It draws on all previous 99 episodes. Everyone who we could have in the episode, from a scheduling point of view, is in the episode. Even the people who we couldn't have because of having conflicting schedules are represented. At the same time, you've got The Flash and Supergirl, and that's an enormous amount of fun. The recruits also play a very large and important role in the episode.

I'm really excited about it. There's one moment in it that I think is probably Stephen Amell's finest performance to date. This one scene, that really has two moments within the one scene, will just break your heart. It will take your heart, pull it out, and stomp it on the floor. It's very, very affecting, and it's all on Stephen's back. It's incredible. Willa [Holland] is amazing in the episode.

Everyone obviously brought their A-game to it. I'm really, really excited about it. It's the 100th episode!

"Legends of Tomorrow"

On how the JSA stays involved, without the Legends having to return again and again to 1942:

I don't want to spoil too much. I will say that we do go back to 1987 and we'll meet a much older version of Obsidian, who is going to be played by Lance Henriksen. That's one way.

And then we have another device up our sleeves that I don't want to spoil because it deals with stuff that is mythology-based in the back half of the year.

On how Vixen will stay very much in the picture going forward:

We'll deal with it very directly in Episode 203. We pick up 203, facing that issue head-on. You have a clue to it in Rex's final words to her. If you're Vixen and you've got Rex Tyler dying in your arms and you hear the words "time traveler," who would you think is responsible?

On the search for the time-lost Rip Hunter:

That's going to be something that's always going on in the background -- and in some cases the foreground -- of various episodes, to a certain extent. We don't want to change the mission statement from fixing aberrations to going and saving Rip, but the bat has been taken out of their hands, in the sense that there's no way to find Rip, so what can they do?

Even if they said that priority number one was finding Rip, I don't know how they would go about it, given the nature of Rip's disappearance.

[The audience] will find out before the Legends do.

On the nature of Nate Heywood's forthcoming superpowers:

One of the reasons why we wanted to bring the character of Nate into the show was that we wanted to play with something that "The Flash" got the chance to really play with in Season 1, which is the fun of telling an origin story for a hero.

In the evolution of a hero, there are all these fun seminal moments that we wanted to put our own Legends spin on. Part of that is discovering you have powers, part of it is learning how to control those powers, and part of it is the first time you go out in costume, part of it is the first time you fail, and part of it is the first time you realize you have a weakness.

We want to be able to tell all those different kinds of stories. You can safely assume the reason we brought in Nate was so that we could tell those kinds of stories, including the unpredictable nature of his powers. The next episode, 203, really shows how difficult it is for Nate to get his powers under control.

On when the members of the Legion of Doom start reappearing:

You'll see John Barrowman as Malcolm Merlyn in "Legends" Episode 208. You'll also see John in "Arrow" Episode 508, which is the 100th episode. You'll see Neal McDonough back as Damien Darhk in the 100th episode. You'll see Wentworth Miller back as Captain Cold in the "Legends" mid-season finale, which is Episode 208.

On the White Canary's new leadership role:

It's funny: you come up with character journeys for the season and sometimes they work out better than you ever expected, like with Sara -- and there are other times that are worse than you ever expected, like with Kendra and Ray.

I will say that I've gotta give a lot of props to Caity Lotz. As you start to see her become more and more comfortable with being the leader of this rag-tag group, it's so much fun to watch her. The character is embodying the role of leader, and Caity's performance really embraces it. It turns out to be one of the most successful things that we've done in Season 2. I'm super excited about it.

The Crossover

On telling the crossover story in a prelude and three parts across all four DC Universe series:

There's going to be an episode of "Supergirl" that ends with Supergirl going over to the crossover. Some people call it a four-way crossover because it involves four shows. My ulcer requires me to call it a three-part crossover. The story that's being told has a beginning, middle, and end. It's a beginning in "The Flash," a middle in "Arrow," and an end in "Legends," but "Supergirl" is very much a part of the whole thing.

"Arrow" airs Wednesdays and "Legends of Tomorrow" airs Thursdays on The CW.

'Grey's Anatomy': Leah's Return Has Everyone Talking in Awkward Clip

"Grey's Anatomy" often feels like high school, and never more so than in this new sneak peek from Season 13, Episode 6, "Roar."

As you know, fired doctor Leah Murphy (Tessa Ferrer) is returning to Grey Sloan, and she'll make her debut this Thursday, October 27 on the ABC show. Fans were surprised to see Leah was coming back, but that's nothing compared to her fellow docs.

Leah is the No. 1 source of cafeteria gossip in the new sneak peek clip, with Arizona and Karev -- who both slept with Leah -- wondering how she could come back, as Maggie -- who never knew her -- compliments the "new" doctor's suture techniques. Stephanie, Jo, and DeLuca also discuss Leah's return at another table -- and Leah walks in, lunch tray in hand, just in time to catch Steph dissing her. Awkward!

And here's the "Roar" promo with Karev vs. Bailey:And here's the synopsis for Episode 6, "Roar":

"A familiar face returns to Grey Sloan, throwing many of the doctors for a loop. With Catherine putting on the pressure, Bailey has to make a decision about Alex while a tough ER case makes Amelia's bad day even worse."

"Grey's Anatomy" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

How to Plan the Perfect Halloween Horror Movie Marathon

Posted:

The Perfect Halloween Movie MarathonHistorically, Halloween is the most popular holiday when it comes to watching movies at home. Christmas might have more sentimental favorites, but when it comes to people watching movies in the luxury of their own living spaces, Halloween has it beat, hands down. And, as such, it's tempting to want to have a Halloween movie marathon, particularly in the weekend before Halloween and especially because television doesn't really do the holiday the service that it once did (AMC used to have an entire month of Halloween-related programming, usually hosted by a horror luminary like Tim Burton; now you're lucky you get a week of genre-related fare beyond an endless marathon of "Walking Dead" episodes).

So, with that in mind, here are some ways to optimize your Halloween movie marathon experience at home. This list assumes you are going to watch all of this in a single day, but the rules and guidelines could be applied to a marathon that stretches out over multiple days. Just take these lessons to heart and your Halloween movie marathon will be 10 times spookier and more enjoyable than that yutz down the hall from you (yeah, you heard me, Roy).

10 a.m. | Start Slow
Mad Monster PartySo, you've just poured yourself a bowl of Franken Berry cereal (oh, sorry, you're more of a Count Chocula person) and you want to get this marathon off to a great start. But it's a little too early for blood and guts and flying eyeballs. Instead, start off with something calmer and tamer: "Mad Monster Party," the Rankin/Bass stop-motion charmer that features the voices of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller, or maybe one of the "Hotel Transylvania" films (I'd say the second one; there are more gags and it's generally zippier and more enjoyable). Other applicable titles: Tim Burton's wonderful, under-appreciated stop-motion animated "Frankenweenie" or last year's somewhat undercooked "Goosebumps" adaptation. "Daffy Duck's Quackbusters," a 1988 package film featuring some of the very best Halloween-themed Looney Tunes, is also a top-notch pick. Another great choice would be something like "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein." The point is: start slow, start gentle, enjoy your monster-themed cereal.

11:30 a.m. | Palette Cleanser
Buffy the Vampire SlayerOkay, so you've just watched something that is equal parts sweet and scary (and, if for some reason you haven't, don't worry, there's another opportunity later on), why not take a moment and indulge in a brief bit of nastiness, with an hour-ish devoted to your favorite horror show? Obviously, you could do two episodes of "The Twilight Zone," "Tales from the Crypt," or "Tales from the Darkside" (currently on excellent horror streaming service Shudder), or perhaps your favorite episode of "American Horror Story," or that episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" where they all turn into their Halloween costumes (the one, later on, with the tiny demon at the frat party is pretty good, too).

12:30 p.m. | Midday Hokum
Strait-JacketIt's always fun to watch a little something more goofy than scary, especially when the sun is still out. This was one of the pleasures of the old horror movie marathons. In the daytime, you'd get to see something that wasn't exactly bone-chilling but was fun, in a campy kind of way. If you want some fun '60s camp, go with one of director William Castle's schlocky classics, like "Homicidal" (1961) or "Strait-Jacket" (1964). "Straight-Jacket" starred Joan Crawford, so the camp value might be higher. This slot also seems primed for a bit of stop-motion fun, so why not check out "The Valley of Gwangi," quite possibly the greatest (and only) cowboys-versus-dinosaurs romp you're likely to see, featuring visual effects by pioneer Ray Harryhausen, based on a story co-conceived by the godfather of stop-motion Willis O'Brien, who died before production began. You could also do one of the myriad of giant monster movies from the atomic era, like "Them" or "The Giant Gila Monster."

2:30 | Escalate the Intensity
TremorsOK, you're settling into the afternoon, time to turn the dial up a little bit. The sun is still out and it's still early enough in the day that a full-on bloodbath isn't ideal, but you can still escalate the intensity. Think about things like "Tremors," "Gremlins" (although, you might want to save that for Christmas), "The Monster Squad," or "Army of Darkness." Nothing too intense, but definitely a step up from earlier in the day; this is your gateway movie.

4:30 | Afternoon Anthology
CreepshowFor some reason, late afternoon is the perfect time for a good, old-fashioned horror anthology. Horror anthologies just feel like Saturday afternoon cable programming; this is where so many of us discovered these cobbled-together classics. Watch the excellent "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie," which fills this slot nicely. Other contenders include the uneven but fun "Twilight Zone: The Movie," the John Carpenter-supervised "Body Bags," Stephen King's "Cat's Eye," and one of the recent undisputed kings of the horror anthology, "Trick 'r Treat." If you want to go with an emphasis on first-person gore, any of the "V/H/S" movies would do the trick ("Safe Haven" from "V/H/S/2" is the best), and if you like your horror both intense and foreign, then check out "Three ... Extremes." Of course, the best horror anthology of all time is, arguably, George A. Romero and Stephen King's "Creepshow." A colorful ode to the classic horror comics of yore, this captures the perfectly goofy should-I-be-watching-this spirit of discovering these horror comedies as a youth.

6:30 | Half-Hour Classic
"IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN" - The classic animated Halloween-themed PEANUTS special, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," created by late cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, airs WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15 (8:30-9:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. (©1966 United Feature Syndicate Inc.)Ready for another palette-cleanser? It's time for a half-hour Halloween classic, before the main run of the night's entertainment begins. Obviously, the go-to is "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," the 1966 animated Peanuts special that is still aired today. One could also make a case for the more recent "Toy Story of Terror!" special that saw Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang in a spooky mystery set at a low-rent roadside motel. Also, this would be a great place to watch one of the best "Treehouse of Horror" episodes of "The Simpsons." It doesn't get much better than "Treehouse of Horror IV," which features wraparound segments written by Conan O'Brien, and the greatest string of segments in between -- "The Devil and Homer Simpson," "Terror at 5 1/2 Feet" (a parody of a famous "Twilight Zone" episode that was remade in the '80s movie), and "Bart Simpson's Dracula." (The following year's "V" was also great.) The point is to have a bit of nostalgic fun before the serious scares start -- oh, and eat some dinner. You'll need your strength.

7:30 | An Undisputed Classic
The ShiningThis is it, the time when you put on an honest-to-devil favorite. We're talking "The Omen," "The Exorcist," "The Shining," and other horror mainstays that don't have definitive articles (grammar humor!) If you're watching with others, consider this a fundamental crowd-pleaser that will get everyone in the Halloween spirit (even if they've been grumbling about your selections so far). If you're watching by yourself, think of this as paying homage to the horror gods by watching something classy and timeless: "Rosemary's Baby," "Night of the Living Dead," "Don't Look Now," "Psycho," "The Howling," or one of the Universal Monster movies (hey, the interconnected Dark Universe is just around the corner). This is your chance to really watch one of your favorites, in a wonderful, slightly sleepy setting.

9:30 | The Centerpiece Film
The Neon DemonYou've done the classics, now it's time for your centerpiece film. This is a statement movie. Maybe it's one of your personal go-to's that you feel has been unjustly overlooked (like the subtle zombie freak-out "Dead & Buried" or the superb 3D remake of "Fright Night"), maybe it's a recent film that you can't wait to watch again (hello, "The Neon Demon") or maybe it's something that feels epic and strange in a way that feels desirably Halloween, like this is the only night that you can get away with watching it (the complete "Grindhouse" double-feature, maybe?) This is something that you play to either remind yourself of what you love about horror movies, or to blow the minds of the people in the room. Bonus points if the movie you play actually has minds being blow out of the back of somebody's skull. Pour one out for pink mist.

11:30 | Go Out With a Bang
Piranha 3D 2010You've made it! It's almost midnight! But you've got to stay awake. But ... how? By watching a movie so outrageous, so insane, so full of wall-to-wall violence that you can't sleep (and when you finally do sleep, you'll probably have nightmares). To me, "The Return of the Living Dead" (which was recently re-released in a great new edition by Scream Factory) is the perfect movie. It's got tons of violence and nudity, is really funny, and has such a quick pace that it doesn't slow down for even a minute. Something like "Hausu," the bonkers Japanese cult classic, would be spot-on, as would Alexandre Aja's blood-soaked remake of "Piranha." The point is: it's going to be something zippy enough that it'll keep your attention and also be a satisfactory close to a movie marathon that has lasted you all day.

Happy Halloween!
