That Time 'Jack Reacher' Star Cobie Smulders Had a 'Holy Sh**' Moment With Tom Cruise Posted: Even Robin Sparkles gets a little star-struck. Especially when it involves Tom Cruise. Cobie Smulders trades in Maria Hill's SHIELD uniform for one from the U.S. Army in her new movie, "Jack Reacher: Never Look Back." She plays the equal parts honor bound and badass Maj. Susan Turner, who joins Reacher in a two-hander "solve the mystery/catch the bad guys" plot that involves a lot of punching and chases. The latter gave Smulders a legit "holy sh**" moment with her co-star, when she found out that, yep, Tom Cruise drives in real-life exactly how you'd expect him to drive. The only thing Cruise does better than driving is making sure his co-stars feel comfortable working together. According to Smulders, that started the first day she ever met the Oscar-nominated star. "We did a table read together of this script. And, right away, he was so generous. He was all about: 'What do you think about this?' Or 'would [your character] say it this way or not, and how would she say it. It was so inclusive, his process ... he was so welcoming, and just helped my overall confidence." Confidence is not something her character lacks. In fact, she gets almost as many moments to show off her badassery as Reacher does -- thanks to the script and her director, Ed Zwick (above, center). While shooting an intense beat involving Turner and Reacher preparing for what they think is going to be a brawl, Turner runs up a flight of stairs and, nonchalantly, tears off a post from the banister with the intent to use it as a club. Because obviously. "That particular moment, I think Ed came up with that," she recalled. Smulders added that the filmmakers gave her "a lot of freedom" to make sure her character wasn't just a sidekick or window dressing, hence the generous amounts of kick-punching for Turner. Smulders' favorite fight sequence? "A key scene for me, for us, was the kitchen fight," Smulders said. "For that one, we were sort of toying around with this idea of -- it's their first fight together. So we tried to stage it in a way to get across how do these two work together -- and also, kind of keep the tension up and service the introduction of the villain as a real threat." Judging by the final product, she succeeded. "Never Go Back" opens in theaters Friday. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Daniel Radcliffe to Play Drug Smuggler in 'Beasts of Burden' Posted: Daniel Radcliffe has locked down another role: The actor is set to star in "Beasts of Burden." Before you get too excited, the film is in no way connected to "Fantastic Beasts" series, which is a Harry Potter offshoot. "Beasts of Burden" is an action-thriller, and Radcliffe will play a drug smuggler. The plot centers on a drug-running pilot who comes into conflict with both the DEA and drug cartels. Radcliffe's role sounds like another intense one. He'll next appear in a similarly dangerous situation in "Imperium," as an undercover cop infiltrating a white supremacist group. The actor also recently appeared in the heist thriller "Now You See Me 2." "Beasts of Burden" is set to begin shooting late next month in Savannah, Georgia. Adam Hoelzel penned the script, and Jesper Ganslandt is directing. MGMT Entertainment's Pal Schiff and Michael Diamond are producing alongside Green-Light International's Chad Moore and Jeff Elliott. 'Walking Dead' Season 7 Premiere May Require Kleenex Posted: We're finally going to find out who had this misfortune of meeting Lucille the bat when "The Walking Dead" Season 7 debuts, so brace yourself now because you probably won't like the answer. The question of whom Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) bashed over the head has tortured fans for months now, and the answer could cause just as much anguish. In a new interview with Variety, "Walking Dead" executive producer Greg Nicotero, who also directed the Season 7 premiere, warned that we might need Kleenex when the reveal comes. "There will be a lot of questions and a lot of whys and 'What's going to happen next?' and 'How could you?' but that's attributed to us spending seven years creating characters that people care about," Nicotero said. He admitted that he himself was upset when he found out, but he promises that the death will serve a purpose. "It's really about propelling the story forward," he said. "We have a very important story to tell and we have to honor the direction that the show will go. The hardest thing on our show is acknowledging who has got to go." That will have to serve as consolation, but get your tissues ready anyway. "The Walking Dead" Season 7 premieres Oct. 23 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC. 'Doctor Strange' Clips: Benedict Cumberbatch Gets Hit With Sorcery and Sass Posted: Critics have already revealed that "Doctor Strange" is an extra "trippy" addition to the MCU, and thanks to two new clips, we can see for ourselves. Both clips center on the titular character: Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), a neurosurgeon who discovers the mystic arts and trains to become the Sorcerer Supreme. As you can imagine, his course changes drastically when that happens; luckily, we get a hint of the progression through the clips. Life look pretty normal for him in the first of the sneak peeks. We see Dr. Strange at work, where he engages in flirty banter with his co-worker Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) and invites her to attend a speaking engagement with him. The colleagues definitely have history -- in fact, she tells him that she doesn't date co-workers because of her "Strange Policy." Meanwhile, the next clip features a very different encounter. Dr. Strange, now bearded and unkempt, refuses to listen when the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) tries to help him "see more." When he continues to reject what she says, she's forced to push back -- literally -- in a very, well, "trippy" way. "Doctor Strange" opens on Nov. 4. Being Queen Looks Miserable in Netflix's New 'Crown' Trailer Posted: Prepare to have your childhood fantasies ruined. Life as a monarch looks far from pleasant in Netflix's new trailer for "The Crown." Called "2 Worlds," the preview focuses on the personal challenges Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) faced in the early years of her reign. Chief among them seem to be her marriage to her husband, Prince Philip (Matt Smith), and dealing with the relationship between her sister, Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby), and a divorced man. It'd be a lot for anyone to deal with -- let alone someone who just took the throne. The series, in which Netflix has invested heavily, promises "a world full of intrigue and revelations" as we follow the queen's reign. Based on the trailer, we'll see forbidden love, family strike, political dealings, a tug-of-war between duty and desire, and more. Watch the trailer below. "The Crown" hits Netflix on Nov. 4 with 10 one-hour episodes. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
'Harry Potter' Passed on a Bruce Springsteen Original Song Posted: "Harry Potter" fans may be wishing they had use of Hermione's time-turner today, after Bruce Springsteen revealed that he wrote an original song specifically for a "Potter" flick -- and filmmakers never used it. The singer-songwriter spilled the beans about his lost "Potter" contribution in an interview with BBC Radio 2 this week, chatting with host Simon Mayo about the discarded track, titled "I'll Stand By You Always." Springsteen confirmed the song's existence, but remained mystified as to why "Potter" producers never put it in a film. (The specific movie it was meant for was not mentioned.) "It was pretty good," the singer told Mayo, laughing as he recalled the bizarre experience. "It was a song I wrote for my eldest son. It was a big ballad that was very uncharacteristic of something that I'd sing myself. But it was something that I thought would have fit lovely." Springsteen added that he'd still "like to get it into a children's movie of some sort, because it was a pretty lovely song." And we'd certainly be curious to hear it, knowing that it was once destined to soundtrack the adventures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Alas, we'll have to wait until The Boss makes a deal with some other filmmakers first. Joss Whedon Wants to Make a 'Star Wars' Spinoff Movie Posted: After the huge undertaking of directing "The Avengers" and its sequel, "Avengers: Age of Ultron," Joss Whedon may not make another Marvel movie again. But that doesn't mean the director wouldn't want to direct another huge franchise film somewhere down the road -- and he may be staying in the Disney family. In an interview with Collider, Whedon addressed the possibility of signing up for another tentpole flick in the future. While the director admitted that he was initially skeptical about the idea, he's recently changed his tune, and has a few ideas for huge franchises he could put his stamp on. In addition to showing interest in directing a James Bond movie and perhaps -- gasp! -- a DC flick, there's a certain little series that's recently caught his eye. "Do I want to make a 'Star Wars' movie? Yeah," Whedon told Collider. "I was [initially] like, 'I don't want to make a "Star Wars" movie. Like, god dammit, why?' But I saw the trailer for 'Rogue [One]' awhile ago and I was like, 'I want to do that.' To make a 'Star Wars' movie and not be wed to the bigger picture." The director explained to Collider that one of his favorite things about directing the "Avengers" flicks was the personal freedom that Marvel gave him to make the movies he wanted, and he saw another opportunity for that with this new series of "Star Wars" standalones. And adding his unique voice to that universe -- or any other existing franchise, for that matter -- would be "a fun thing to do, to put yourself in the service of something if you think you can add an interpretation," he told Collider. Disney is definitely keen on making a bunch more spinoffs in the future, so Whedon could certainly lobby for the job. And his existing connection to the company is guaranteed to give him a major in. Now all that remains to be seen is if the two parties can come together on a concept. Stay tuned. 'Walking Dead' Alum Laurie Holden Joins 'The Americans' for Season 5 Posted: Another "Walking Dead" alum is returning to TV screens, with Laurie Holden set to join the season five cast of FX Cold War drama "The Americans." TVLine has the scoop that Holden will appear next year as Renee, meant to be a love interest for FBI agent and recent divorcee Stan (Noah Emmerich). According to the site, Renee is "a new woman in town who captures the interest of Stan when they meet at the gym," and "easily keeps up with the guys watching sports, drinking beer, and fly fishing." She sounds like the perfect woman, though TVLine's report indicates there may be something deeper going on with the woman (and in a series all about spies and espionage, we wouldn't put it past Renee to have some secrets -- or perhaps some ulterior motives -- up her sleeve). It's unclear how many episodes Holden will appear in, though her role is described as recurring. This is actually the second time that Holden and Emmerich will work together on the small screen: The pair previously collaborated when Emmerich appeared in an arc at the end of season one of "The Walking Dead," playing Dr. Edwin Jenner, a scientist at the CDC. Jenner welcomes Rick and his gang -- including Holden's character, Andrea -- into the CDC for some much-needed meals and showers, though he eventually reveals he's about to blow the place up in order to prevent the center's various pathogen samples from escaping and causing further destruction to the walker-riddled world (and also to put the desperate scientist out of his misery). Right now, "The Americans" is focusing on the escalating tensions between the U.S. and Russia, and the U.S. developing chemical weapons to use against the Soviets; could Holden's casting be a wink to her link to Emmerich's "TWD" character? Fans will have to wait to find out. Season five of "The Americans" is in production now; it's slated to premiere on FX sometime early next year. Netflix's 'Stranger Things' Recipes Actually Look Delicious(ly Nasty) Posted: Warning: "Stranger Things" Season 1 spoilers in the videos below. "Stranger Things" fans have a lot of time to kill (or at least send to the Upside Down then fake its death) before Netflix releases Season 2 in 2017. And since it's Halloween, you can fill some of that time by baking up some appropriately creepy "Stranger Things" treats -- namely, Demogorgon Pie and French Onion Barb. (It is a CRIME that there are no Eggo-based recipes. Rectify this, Netflix.) Both look disgusting on first site, but actually seem like they'd be pretty tasty. Especially the pie. Please bake that beautiful evil pie and report back. The two recipes, complete with how-to videos, were posted to Netflix Kitchen. Here's French Onion Barb: Recipe by Ashley Holt As the first commenter on the video joked, "THIS IS NOT WHAT WE MEANT BY JUSTICE FOR BARB ." Oh well! Here's Demogorgon Pie: Recipe by Ashley Holt That one seems like it cut off before the very end of the recipe. As Netflix wrote, "Eat the pie, or be eaten by the pie." Perhaps they were indeed eaten by the pie. It's a risk worth taking. Consider baking up these beauties while re-streaming the eight episodes of Season 1. Want more stuff like this? Are the Emmys Rigged? 'Seinfeld' Stars Say Yes & No After Trump Claim Posted: Stuff your sorries in a sack, Emmys! During the final presidential debate between "nasty woman" Hillary Clinton and "bad hombre" Donald Trump, the Emmy Awards somehow found itself a hot topic. Clinton was making the point that, whenever things don't go Trump's way, he cries "rigged," giving as an example the tweets he's posted on the Emmys being rigged, because "The Apprentice" never won. Trump piped in that he "should've won," and the Internet had some fun with that.

Evan Rachel Wood Drops Intriguing Tease for 'Westworld' Episode 5 Posted: The "Westworld" hype train is now at full speed and we are definitely on board for the ride. HBO's new sci-fi Western has us following every new theory like the Man in Black (Ed Harris) following clues to the maze. (But we're skipping the scalping.) Episode 4 airs this Sunday, October 23, but we already have our eyes on Episode 5, thanks to Dolores herself, Evan Rachel Wood. Here's her brief tease, echoed by Ben Barnes, who plays Logan, the black-hat wearing best friend of white hat guest William (Jimmi Simpson):
That's all they said. It's not much, but the less we have implanted in our own minds, the better. Let the fans do the speculating. (And they certainly are speculating -- from the theory that William is the younger version of the Man in Black, to the idea that maybe the Man in Black is park co-creator Arnold, and a dozen other theories in between.) All we know at this point is that Season 1, Episode 5 is titled "Contrapasso" and it will air Sunday, October 30. (A quick search informs us that Contrapasso is from the Latin contra and patior, "suffer the opposite," referring to the punishment of souls in Dante's Inferno, "by a process either resembling or contrasting with the sin itself.")In the meantime, this Sunday's Episode 4 is called "Dissonance Theory," and HBO provided this synopsis: "Dolores joins William and Logan on a bounty hunt in the badlands. The Man in Black, with Lawrence in Tow, finds a critical clue in his search to unlock the maze. Dr. Ford and Theresa discuss the future of the park. Maeve is troubled by a recurring vision." Speaking of Dolores and William, Evan Rachel Wood and Jimmi Simpson shared some behind-the-scenes scoop on the image we were left with at the end of Episode 3, when Dolores fell into William's arms:
We can't wait to see what's coming, and see what new theories are launched (and shut down) by the results. "Westworld" Season 1 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO. For more from Evan Rachel Wood, read Moviefone's exclusive Q&A with her on why Dolores is her favorite character ever. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. 'Logan' Is a Beautifully Damaged Road Warrior in First Trailer Posted: The first "Logan" trailer looks nothing like "X-Men" or any other superhero movie. And that is what's most intriguing. The third and final Wolverine movie is Rated R (like "Deadpool"), and we had been told it would have a "very cool, different" feel. It's meant to be quite "violent" and "like a Western in its tone." All of that is certainly on display in the trailer. There's almost a Mad Max vibe, but with more wistful sadness than frenetic action. Set to Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" (which never gets old, by the way), the trailer features a bloody, pained Wolverine (Hugh Jackman); an even more aged Professor X (Patrick Stewart); a mysterious young girl (Dafne Keen) said to be "very much like" Logan; a glimpse of Stephen Merchant's Caliban; and a first look at the villains -- Boyd Holbrook's Pierce and the Reavers. Charles: "Logan, what did you do?" Not all of them. Thankfully. "Logan" opens March 3, 2017. Want more stuff like this? Like us on Facebook. Early 'Doctor Strange' Reviews Praise 'Trippy' but 'Formulaic' Marvel Movie Posted: The doctor is not quite in, but early reviews have arrived for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's latest superhero film. "Doctor Strange" opens November 4, and so far critics are giving it a solid thumbs up, if not two enthusiastic thumbs up and a standing ovation. The highest praise seems to be for the "trippy" visuals, original score (from Michael Giacchino), and performances from Tilda Swinton and Benedict Cumberbatch. Here are some of the initial reactions from critics:

How Victoria Justice Lost Her 'Rocky Horror' Virginity Posted: After landing the plumb leading lady role in Fox's TV adaptation of 1975's classic "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," Victoria Justice was determined to deliver her own Janet, dammit. The 23-year-old actress and singer was no "virgin" to the cult classic movie that inspired the new musical production -- her mom initiated her when she was a teenager -- and was eager to capture a few of the nuances established by the original Janet Weiss, actress Susan Sarandon. But Justice also knew that this was her shot to put her own stamp on the role as well. "I wanted to push myself," Justice revealed to Moviefone and a small group of press at Fox's press tour for the Television Critics Association, "because I wanted to find ad‑libs and find things that were different and kind of make it my own." What do you love most about Janet? Victoria Justice: I think what I love most about Janet would have to be -- I mean, I love her character arc, as an actor, that was so much fun to play. Starting off as this very demure girl who just wants to love Brad, and her world revolves around Brad and she just wants to get married and have the white picket fence life so badly. And then, when she enters the castle to meet Dr. Frank N. Furter, for her whole world to be flipped upside down, and for her to kind of come to terms with her own sexuality and have this sexual awakening was so super liberating to play and was so much fun for me. How did you like her wardrobe? Oh, I loved the wardrobe. Even though 80 percent of my wardrobe is a bra and a slip! But the wardrobe of the entire movie is absolutely incredible. William Ivey Long, who is a Tony Award-winning Broadway designer, custom made everything, so it's beautiful -- so colorful! What was challenging and new to you as an actor? I think what was challenging and new for me was having this character that's already been created and played so well by Susan Sarandon. Wanting to pay homage to certain parts of the movie and certain choices she made and little nuances, but also not wanting to copy her. And I wanted to keep the classic Janet voice, where she kind of talks in this higher register, and it's just a lot more sweet and saccharin in a lot of ways -- but not copying her. So I think that was probably the biggest challenge was watching the movie and remembering certain things that I wanted to keep, but then also forgetting the rest of it, so I could be inspired on my own. With the song "Touch Me," how did you make it your own? Well, I don't know! I'm excited for everyone to hear it so they can experience it that for themselves and make their own decisions about it. But I think the production is a little bit different. It's still staying very true to the original song -- all the lyrics are the same; the Melodies are the same. We didn't want to mess with those, obviously. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But it's more of like a modernized production. It's kind of almost like a Quentin Tarantino, sexy kind of twang to it in the beginning, which is really fun. And I think I was able to kind of throw in some new ad‑libs. That was really cool for me. I do all kinds of fun stuff. You first saw the original "Rocky Horror" when you were 15. What do you think is age appropriate for this version? I think that's up to the parents to make that choice. It is airing on Fox, so even though the story is the same, the script is the same, it's not anything so scandalous that it wouldn't be able to air on network TV. So, really, I think it's just up to the parents' discretion if they are comfortable showing their kids. But I think if I was a parent, I'd totally be down to show my 5th grader! I'd be like, 'This is a classic. You need to know these songs. You need to get familiar with these characters. You need to know who Tim Curry is." And then we would watch the original after. What are the things that you responded to when you first saw it, and then when you re-explored it later? So many things! I mean, I remember seeing "Time Warp" for the first time and just freaking out. All the characters -- like how they were so weird and out there. I literally had never seen anything like it in my life. It was shocking and opened a whole new world in a way, seeing "Time Warp" being performed and just how quirky it was. And also -- oh my God! -- seeing Tim Curry singing "Sweet Transvestite" is one of the greatest performances in film history. He is absolutely incredible. And so, all of that, I think, really stuck with me. And the costumes and just how outrageous it was. I was like, "This is so cool! I didn't know a world like this existed." And then I think, when I started rehearsals for this movie, we all really got in touch with the kind of sexuality of it. Our first day of rehearsal, Kenny [Ortega, the director] had us all do an exercise together where we basically walk around the room with all the dancers and all the actors and make eye contact with different people. And then he would say, "Okay ... melt." And then we would have to go to that person we were next to and just like melt and drape all over them. It was a lot of fun. Was it strange for you to go and see a midnight showing as a teen? No -- actually, my mom has always introduced me to all different types of art, and ever since I was little, she's been a super cool mom who's on the cutting edge of things. So it was so much fun. But it was so funny because I was a "virgin" to seeing "Rocky Horror Picture Show," and [the audience members] were, like, aware of it. And people that were the shadow cast took red lip stick and put like a big "V" on my head and they drew a penis on my friend Josh's face, so it was pretty funny. Our moms were up for the ride, though. What else has she introduced you to? So much. I just remember watching all types of films growing up. "Funny Girl" was one of my favorite movies when I was 8 years old. And Audrey Hepburn films and tons of musical theater: seeing "Rent" when I was young; seeing "Jesus Christ Superstar" when I was younger. Just all types of different things! What other musicals would you love to do? I'd love to do "Rent." "Take Me or Leave Me" is one of my all time favorite songs, so I would love to play one of those characters. I'd love to do "A Chorus Line." That would be amazing. You started in show business at a very young age. Do you ever have any regrets about working as a kid? I don't have any regrets. I'm so glad! I've known what I wanted to do ever since I was little, and the fact that I am lucky enough to have a family that actually didn't just poo-poo my ideas -- like, "Oh, she's just a kid." They support me and help me realize my dreams. I feel so incredibly lucky, and I wouldn't take any of it back. "The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again" airs Thursday, October 20 on Fox. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
