'SNL' Shares 'Stranger Things' Season 2 'Sneak Peak'

Posted:

If you're curious where "Stranger Things" Season 2 is headed, well, "Saturday Night Live" probably isn't actually going to give you the answers. However, the new "SNL" sketch parodying the Netflix series should at least entertain you.

In the sketch, we finally meet Lucas' parents, who are portrayed by "SNL" cast members Leslie Jones and Kenan Thompson. The two are upset to find their son (Sasheer Zamata) -- whom they haven't seen in days -- in the company of his friends Mike (Kyle Mooney) and Dustin (Lin-Manuel Miranda), and things only get worse when they meet Eleven (Kate McKinnon) and Chief Hopper (Beck Bennett). The two think the kids need more parental supervision, and honestly, who can blame them?

The sketch highlights some of the strangest aspects of the supernatural show's plot as well as elements of real life.
If the Duffer brothers do decide to feature Lucas' parents in later "Stranger Things" episodes, they should keep Jones and Thompson in mind come casting time.

New 'Supergirl' Sneak Peek Features a Super Family Reunion

Posted:

You don't have to wait for the "Supergirl" Season 2 premiere tonight to see the show's heroine team up with her famous cousin, Superman: The CW has released a clip from the episode, showing the two in action.

The network has made no secret of the fact that Superman is bringing his powers to the series, but this is the first time we've seen just what the two are capable of together. The new clip shows Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) assume their superhero alter egos and reunite high in the skies, in the midst of a crisis. It's not how our family reunions usually go, but things are obviously different when you're from Krypton.
Superman looks like he'll be a big help to Supergirl, even if he was a little slow to actually start doing his part. Did he really need her to confirm that she could use a hand?

"Supergirl" returns tonight at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.

Marvel's First 'Iron Fist' Teaser Trailer Pulls No Punches

Posted:

Another Marvel superhero is coming out swinging on Netflix.

With "Iron Fist" set to premiere early next year, the streaming service has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming superhero series. New York Comic Con were the lucky first viewers, but fortunately, Netflix didn't keep the rest of us waiting long.

The new preview introduces Danny Rand (Finn Jones), a man who returns to New York City after being missing for 15 years. His plan seems somewhat simple at first -- to reclaim his family company -- but it becomes much more complicated when an enemy pops up, forcing him to choose between his legacy and his responsibilities as Iron Fist. Of course, this wouldn't be a Marvel trailer without some good action scenes, and this one doesn't disappoint.
"Iron Fist" is part of Marvel's six-pack of series for Netflix that includes "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage," "The Punisher," and the cross-over series "The Defenders."

"Marvel's Iron Fist" hits Netflix on March 17, 2017, so prepare yourself for the binge now.

'Avengers 4' Will Bring In Evangeline Lilly as the Wasp

Posted:

Premiere Of Marvel's "Ant-Man" - ArrivalsWe still have 2018's "Avengers: Infinity War" between now and 2019's "Avengers 4," but details are already coming out about the fourth film in the Avengers series.

Actress Evangeline Lilly, who portrayed Hope van Dyne in 2015's "Ant-Man," recently opened up to Blastr about her upcoming involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She laid out the plans for her soon-to-be-superhero character, starting with the "Ant-Man" sequel, "Ant-Man and the Wasp." With the film slated to debut after "Avengers: Infinity War," she won't appear in the third film in the Avengers series. However, we can expect to see her become the Wasp in time for "Avengers 4."

Lilly explained that "Ant-Man and the Wasp" will be used to develop her character before she teams up with the Avengers.

"I'm excited because it's essentially going to be the origin of the Wasp," Lilly told Blastr of the upcoming sequel. "Of course, we're going to see the Wasp for the first time take on the mantle and put on the suit and fly about and do her thing."

She explained that appearing in the fourth Avengers film instead of the third will be better for her character. "The Wasp won't be in the first part," Lilly said, "she'll be in the second part because they really want to preserve that reveal for 'Ant-Man and the Wasp' so that they can give it its due time."

The news will may be a little disappointing for fans hoping to see her as the Wasp sooner rather than later, but never fear, because -- as always -- there will be more than enough heroes to keep "Avengers: Infinity War" exciting.

"Avengers: Infinity War" is scheduled to hit theaters on May 4, 2018, followed by "Ant-Man and the Wasp" on July 6, 2018, and then "Avengers 4" will follow in 2019.

Daniel Craig Breaks James Bond Silence, Hints at Potential Return: 'I'd Miss It Terribly'

Posted:

The New Yorker Festival 2016 - Daniel Craig Talks With Nicholas SchmidleDaniel Craig has been noticeably silent as rumors have swirled about his role in the James Bond franchise, and whether or not he's truly ready to walk away from 007. For months, there's been talk that he's been offered a boatload of money to return, that he's still the top pick for the gig, and that producers have already moved on to any one of an increasingly large number of replacement candidates. So what's the truth?

It's still a little murky, but Craig has finally broken his silence on the subject. Birth.Movies.Death. reports that during an appearance at The New Yorker Festival this past weekend, the actor said there haven't been any official talks yet about Bond 25, "because everybody's just a bit tired" from making the last flick in the franchise. And while he didn't give any definitive answers about whether or not he'd be suiting up again for the franchise, Craig certainly left the door open, and also clarified his infamous "slash my wrists" remarks from the "Spectre" press tour.

The actor admitted that when he made that statement, he was simply exhausted from the stress of shooting "Spectre," comparing the process to completing a marathon. You wouldn't ask a runner crossing the finish line when their next race will be, Craig reasoned, and an actor wrapping a massive action flick isn't ready to commit to another one at that point, either.

Still, making the Bond movies has been an overall positive experience, he said, calling the frenetic six-month turnaround from production to release "one of the most thrilling things as an actor you can do."

"I love this job, I get a massive kick out of it. And if I can keep getting a kick out of it, I will," Craig told the crowd. " ... The things I get to do on a Bond movie, and the type of work it is -- there is no other job like it. And were I to stop doing it, I would miss it terribly."

While those words are by no means any sort of guarantee that Craig will be back as Bond, they do leave the actor some wiggle room (and perhaps serve as a mea culpa to the 007 producers for his harsh "Spectre" comments). But the actor's remarks also make it clear that it will still be a while before there's any definitive news about Bond 25, so we'll have to wait for his decision. Stay tuned.

'Grey's Anatomy' Scoop: Arizona Love Interest Tessa Ferrer Returns

Posted:

CBS Television Studios & Amblin Television's "Extant" Premiere - ArrivalsA familiar face is returning to "Grey's Anatomy" this season, and she may have her eye on Arizona (Jessica Capshaw).

TVLine reports that Tessa Ferrer is set to make her way back to Seattle, reprising her role as Dr. Leah Murphy. Ferrer starred in seasons nine and 10 of the long-running medical drama, last appearing in the season 10 finale, when she was fired by Richard (James Pickens Jr.) for being an incompetent surgeon.

But fans probably best remember her for her romantic entanglements on the show, first hooking up with Karev (Justin Chambers), and then embarking on a brief, rocky relationship with Arizona, following Arizona's breakup with Callie (Sara Ramirez). Arizona eventually ended things with Leah, when she briefly tried to reconcile with Dr. Torres.

Ferrer's return could mark a new beginning for Leah and Arizona, though, with TVLine reporting that Dr. Robbins is due to get a new love interest this season. Capshaw told TVLine that fans could expect the romance to begin soon, and said the storyline is a welcome change after the drama of last season.

"We had to wade through a little muck first," the actress told the site. "But I do feel that Arizona has certainly waited long enough."

No word yet on when exactly Ferrer will be making her return, or how long she'll stick around this time. "Grey's" airs Thursdays on ABC.

'Bad Moms' Spinoff 'Bad Dads' Is Coming in 2017

Posted:

"Bad Moms" was a modest hit this summer, connecting with female audiences and scoring at the box office. Parent studio STX Entertainment has decided to capitalize on that success with a follow-up flick, though in a head-scratching move, it's eschewing plans for a traditional sequel in favor of targeting a different demographic entirely.

Deadline reports that instead of "Bad Moms 2," STX is making a spinoff called "Bad Dads," essentially copying the format of the original -- which starred Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Christina Applegate, and Kathryn Hahn -- but replacing the leads with a bunch of offbeat dudes. The flick is currently looking for its stars, with a casting announcement planned sometime in the next few weeks.

According to the studio, there's a method to its madness. In a statement, STX said:

"Where other studios have automatically green lit traditional and significantly more expensive sequels, STX has determined those sequels on average are grossing 68% less than the originals. Instead, STX has chosen to focus on extending consumer passion for the Bad Moms brand with a series of film spin-offs, a reality television show, short form digital content, and a robust consumer products program."

While we agree that the endless parade of sequels is getting old, it does seem odd for STX to essentially ignore what made "Bad Moms" a success -- appealing to an under-served female audience looking for an original comedy -- in favor of once again chasing the male moviegoer. And what does "robust consumer products program" even mean?

We'll have to wait until next summer to see how "Bad Dads" measures up against its predecessor. The flick is due in theaters on July 14, 2017.

Disney Taps Guy Ritchie to Direct 'Aladdin' Live-Action Remake

Posted:

Disney is continuing on its quest to turn all of its beloved animated features into live-action flicks, with 1992's "Aladdin" up next. The film already has a script, and now, a big name director is reportedly attached, too.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guy Ritchie ("Sherlock Holmes," "Snatch," the upcoming "King Arthur") is currently in negotiations to take the helm of the live-action "Aladdin." Ritchie is apparently being sought after specifically to add his personal touch to the studio's so-called "ambitious and non-traditional" take on the source material, with Disney looking to "make [the story] non-linear," per THR.

It's unclear if this project has now taken priority over Disney's rumored prequel about the Genie (voiced in the original by the late Robin Williams), which would have focused on the character's days before he met Aladdin, and told the story of how he became imprisoned in the lamp. According to reports from last year, the intention was for that movie to have then been followed by the "Aladdin" remake, though THR doesn't mention the prequel in this new report.

Disney may have dropped its plans for that project simply because the thought of messing with Williams's Genie legacy was too daunting. As it stands now, THR says, "Still to be determined [in the 'Aladdin' remake] is the approach to the Genie, which to this day remains closely associated to Williams' singular and defining performance." The studio may have wanted to tread lightly with that character -- thus abandoning the prequel idea altogether -- while figuring out how best to update him, and still properly honor Williams's memory.

As it stands now, the studio is working from a script by John August, who's written a bunch of Tim Burton movies, including "Big Fish" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," among other projects. The plan is to "keep many of the musical elements of the original," per THR, though it's unclear what songs will make the cut. Stay tuned.

Fresh Comic Voice Issa Rae Has Nothing to Be 'Insecure' About

Posted:

2016 Summer TCA - "Insecure" Portrait SessionAfter taking the previously underexposed archetype of the "awkward black girl" to the Internet, Issa Rae's taking her awkwardness mainstream with "Insecure."

Rae become a full-fledged YouTube sensation when her web series "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl" debuted in 2011 and marked her as a fresh and authentic new voice with some seriously spot-on comedic spins on contemporary life as a young black woman.

Now, she's bringing her distinctive sensibility to her biggest audience yet with her new sitcom "Insecure," for HBO. Not to pigeonholed as either a black "Girls'" or an African American "Sex and the City," "Insecure" is as distinctly defined a series as and of the premium cable channel's female-led precursors, set squarely in a vibrant corner of Los Angeles and following the unique, often hilarious and always inevitable ways the Rae's character Issa Dee's blackness plays into her life.

And as Rae revealed in conversation with a small group of journalists, it's an even more pointed take than her initial online venture. "[It's] a completely different show," she says. "'Awkward Black Girl" was kind of larger than life, caricature-y. This one was more grounded in reality, closer to my life. Different shows, but some of the same themes."

As you developed this comedy persona, where does she intersect with you, and where are you totally different from her?

Issa Rae: In a sense, she is me. We haven't made a lot of the same choices at all, but at our core we're the same.

Did you feel a responsibility to depict an everyday person, as opposed to the more heightened takes on black women on television, many of which are either super high-level career women, or foils for their husband and families?

Yeah, I think there's room for both. I think that there's room for the super-women, and we wanted to focus on those who aren't quite there yet, and don't have it all together because that's what who I know. It depends on the kind of story that you want to tell. I think in those instances it works for like heightened drama. We're kind of telling a low maintenance story, if you will.

In the way you're going about this, are you finding the universal, relatable quality in centering on the character- and situation-specific comedy?

We're focusing on the specific first, because I think the authenticity comes from, and these real moments that we've each had. I can honestly say that every writer has a piece of their life, or a story, or a chunk taken and put into this show. So that's where the specificity comes in of these unique human experiences. Viewers watch and can relate from that point.

What was the biggest learning curve for you, in transitioning from creating your own content for the Internet to working within the bigger show business system?

Honestly, the development process, just because I'm so used to "I have an idea, I'm going to tweak it, I'm going to put it out there. It's out there." Then this is more, "I have an idea -- okay, there are other voices helping me tweak it, and it may take longer than I want, and I'm very impatient and impulsive." So dealing with that, but the finished product and what we've built together is just hands-down amazing, and probably one of the best things I've done.

Have you had any sort of lunge-across-the-table creative differences with HBO where there's been something where it's like, "No, it really does have to be this?"

Not yet, no. No, I think the biggest thing we had was like to push a controversial moment in the series sooner. And there was initial resistance, like "Come on -- what?" But then it was like, "Oh my gosh, that makes sense," and it made the show better. But nothing like, "You're wrong." Not yet.

What can you say about those fresh-feeling, not-so-familiar locations in South L.A. and what you found vibrant and sexy about them and how you wanted to display them in the show.

For me, growing up there and living life, dating, and making friends in those areas, and seeing those places on television, and seeing them being shot up, or with drugs and things like that, and not knowing that to be my own experience, and wanting to show the different side of it. That was extremely important to me, because some of the best people that I've ever met live there, and I want to showcase that.

Do you have those discoveries in the writing room where you're like, "I thought that thing only happened to me?"

Oh, completely! And the writers have just been so incredible. I really is just like a dream team of people behind the scenes. Just what they've contributed and just what they've brought to the table has been outstanding. Those moments happen all the time.

Do you have location issues shooting there -- I would think that production would be competing with traffic and construction in a busy area like that.

Just noise, yeah. A lot of noise. There's a couple scenes where we're like, "What the heck? Come on. Did we shoot this on the freeway?" But for the most part, the city has been generous, and especially Inglewood in terms of allotting us -- we only had one incident with the LAPD where they just shut down production in one of our neighborhoods. But for the most part, it was incident-free.

Your "Awkward Black Girl" co-star Sujata Day pops in here -- now as your adversary rather than your BFF. How was that transition?

It is a little strange, but it's hilarious. To see Sunjata play her, like, bitchy role, it cracks me up on screen. It's fun. I'm so glad that a lot of the actors were able to take the journey with me, and they're all in these varied roles. It's just fun to see us all like grow together.

You've talked about starting conversations with the audience with the show, as an internet person yourself, you know the conversation on the internet isn't always polite.

No, it's not.

Are you prepared for all the levels of discourse that come out of people wanting to discuss the show from the perspective of their own experiences, and even their own biases?

I don't think I am, to be honest! Because I used to read all the comments for "Awkward Black Girl." I wouldn't respond, but I'd read them and take it in. But I think now I'm aware that more people will be watching.

Because we're doing a show about black women -- we're not saying that we represent all black women at all, [but] I know that that's going to be a topic. I know that people are going to be like, "Well, that's not my experience. I didn't go through that." It's not necessarily meant for everyone. Everyone isn't going to like the show. So I'm fine with that. I'm just not ready to read about it all the time.

What are the TV shows and the films that are most influential for you in the creation of this show?

On the creation of this show, specifically, I've always been influenced by "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "Seinfeld" and "30 Rock." Film-wise, "Love & Basketball," just because that was just such a regular black love story. It was set in my neighborhood. But I think, for the most part, I can't think of any other shows that this show is like.

What would you most like people to know about this show?

I would most like people to know that I'm really proud of it, and that it should make you laugh. If it doesn't, don't watch it. I just want people to watch it and love it as much as I do.

"Insecure" airs Sundays on HBO.

Here's Your First Look at the Villain of 'Logan'

Posted:

2016 Sundance Film Festival - "The Free World" PortraitsHugh Jackman's Wolverine and Patrick Stewart's Professor X are much older in "Logan," but we still pity the fool who tries to mess with them.

Director James Mangold has been sharing photos to tease the third (and final) Wolverine solo movie, and the latest post on the film's official Instagram showcases our new villain:

Pierce

A photo posted by @wponx on

That's Boyd Holbrook as "Pierce," most likely Marvel villain Donald Pierce.

Here's some comic book backstory from Collider:

"The character first appeared in the late 80s, modeled after Donald Sutherland with the character's last name sharing the same last name of Sutherland's M*A*S*H character Hawkeye Pierce. The Marvel villain was a mutant-hating genocidal maniac who infiltrated the Hellfire Club with the sole intention of murdering all of its members. Oh, and he's also a cyborg, carrying four artificial limbs that grant him superhuman strength and a great resistance to damage—in fact, as long as his head is intact, he can survive pretty much anything, including a beating from The Wolverine himself."

In the past week, fans have also been treated to the first "Logan" poster, a script page, and an image of the much older Professor X. Follow @wponx for more teaser shots.

"Logan" will be released in theaters March 3, 2017.

'Finding Dory' Crosses $1 Billion at Box Office

Posted:

And she's still swimming! "Finding Dory," sequel to "Finding Nemo," crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office over the weekend.

According to Box Office Mojo, the current worldwide gross is $1,001,480,568 -- with about $485 million from domestic audiences, and around $517 million from foreign markets.

As you can imagine, Disney is pretty proud of Ellen DeGeneres's forgetful blue tang, whose movie is now...

• the second Pixar film to join the billion club (after "Toy Story 3")

• the fifth highest-grossing animated film of all time (after "Frozen," "Minions," "Toy Story 3," and "Zootopia")

• the 27th highest-grossing film of all time (after these guys)

• 2016's third highest-grossing movie so far (after "Captain America: Civil War" and "Zootopia")

• and the fourth Disney film to join the billion club just in the past year (after "The Force Awakens," "Civil War," and "Zootopia")

You can bring "Finding Dory" home soon, with the film available on Digital HD October 25, then DVD and Blu-ray on November 15.

Meanwhile, we have some theories on why the rest of this past weekend's box office was less worthy of celebration.

5 Reasons Why 'Girl on the Train' and 'Birth of a Nation' Stumbled at the Box Office

Posted:

Which affected the box office the most this weekend: the controversy over "The Birth of a Nation" filmmaker/star Nate Parker's past, the surprisingly poor reviews for the much-anticipated "The Girl on the Train," or Hurricane Matthew?

There seemed to be a perfect storm of events that threatened to keep people away from the multiplex, even with three new wide releases (the other was family comedy "Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life"). As it turned out, this weekend's films performed pretty much as expected. "Girl" debuted on top with an estimated $24.7 million.

Historical drama "Birth" earned an estimated $7.1 million, finishing sixth, while "Middle School" followed close behind, in seventh place, with an estimated $6.9 million. Still, overall box office was down 10.3 percent from last weekend.

What are the lessons, then, from this weekend's underwhelming turnout? Here are five of them.

1. Reviews Matter
"Girl" got mixed-to-poor reviews, amounting to a 44 percent "Fresh" rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Those downward thumbs should have hurt the film more, according to conventional wisdom that older adult audiences still care what critics think. But major Hollywood films starring women, based on best-sellers written by women, and targeted at women audiences are rare, so their intended viewers rush to the theater when such movies open. ("Gone Girl," which earned much stronger reviews, seems the obvious point of comparison; it opened on this same weekend in 2014 to $37.5 million.)

As it turned out, ticketbuyers agreed with the critics, giving "Girl on the Train" a weak B- grade at CinemaScore, but not even poor word-of-mouth could completely dissuade viewers primed to see it.

2. Screen Count Is a Big Deal
"Middle School" didn't earn high marks from critics either, landing at 59 percent at Rotten Tomatoes. Of course, kids don't read reviews, but their parents do.

No doubt Lionsgate was hoping to duplicate the success of 20th Century Fox's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" movies, another tween-age comedy series based on a series of kid-lit best-sellers. But the "Middle School" books don't seem to have as ardent a following. Nor were the just-okay reviews or the very good word-of-mouth (an A- grade at CinemaScore) powerful enough to overcome a saturated marketplace.

Last week's box office champ, Tim Burton's "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," added another 183 screens (for a total of 3,705) and finished second with an estimated $15.0 million. Despite Burton's grown-up fanbase, "Peregrine" appears to be playing more to family audiences. Meanwhile, family cartoon "Storks," playing in 3,608 theaters in its third week, finished fifth with an estimated $8.5 million. Both films had just marginally better reviews than "Middle School" but were playing on 800 to 900 more screens.

3. Audiences Are Looking for Certain Stories
"Birth" had comparatively robust reviews, earning 79 percent at Rotten Tomatoes. Indeed, it was coasting on a year's worth of awards-season hype, ever since it brought the house down at January's Sundance Film Festival and sold to Fox Searchlight for a record $17.5 million. Yet its subject, Nat Turner's bloody slave rebellion of 1831, was always going to be a tough sell.

Consider, for instance, "12 Years a Slave," which Fox Searchlight released in October 2013. It debuted in limited release and didn't go wide until its fourth weekend, when it made $6.8 million (just a hair below "Birth," which went wide immediately). Though it would go on to win Oscars for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (for Lupita Nyong'o), "12 Years" never rose higher than seventh place on the chart and ultimately earned just $56.7 million in North America. Or look at this summer's "Free State of Jones," which also tackled the subjects of American slavery and rebellion and even featured a white A-list leading man in Matthew McConaughey. At a time when no other prestige dramas were playing, it still mustered just a $7.6 million debut and a total gross of $20.8 million.

It's not that adults want only escapism and won't go see bleak, violent, thought-provoking dramas, as is clear from this weekend's first-place movie. Hollywood insiders have spent much of the last year wringing their hands over the lack of diversity in their own industry, in terms of both the stories told and the people who get to tell them.

Indeed, "Birth," which made its splash at Sundance just days after this year's Oscar nominations were announced and unleashed a torrent of #OscarsSoWhite complaints, was expected to be a corrective to such complaints. And while "Birth," "Katwe," and a handful of other upcoming movies with black protagonists may yet win awards, they continue to face a struggle at the box office. The Academy may want more chances to honor artists of color, but Hollywood won't be creating too many such movies when it can't figure out how to draw mass audiences or even African-American audiences to the few such movies it does release.

4. Controversy Factors In
Despite "Birth" having grim subject matter, Fox Searchlight originally must have thought it had a feel-good story on its hands in the facts of Parker's life: rising actor puts his promising career on hold and risks his fortune to get well-intentioned passion project made; earns raves as his movie's star, director, and co-writer; and wins awards (and perhaps reaps commercial success) for bringing to light an under-told tale from American history at a time when race relations are especially fraught.

Instead, however, Parker has spent much of the last two months discussing (but not exactly apologizing for) the rape allegations of 17 years ago, when he was a college student. (Parker was tried and acquitted; his future "Birth" co-writer, Jean Celestin, was convicted over the same incident but had his conviction overturned on appeal.) Audiences who had scarcely heard of Parker and Celestin were now forced to confront the question of whether they'd go see this movie if it meant tacitly rewarding Parker and Celestin for bad acts they allegedly committed before they were even in show business.

Theater owners, however, felt no such qualms. While Fox Searchlight initially wanted to book "Birth" on about 1,800 screens, exhibitor demand led to bookings on 2,105 screens. Critics were careful (as they are when Woody Allen or Roman Polanski releases a new movie) to separate the director's cloudy personal history from the merits of his film. None of the rape talk prevented "Birth" from drawing an audience that was 61 percent female -- this in a weekend when "Girl" was supposed to hoard all the adult female viewers. The "Birth" audience was also 60 percent African-American. Word-of-mouth was even better than the reviews, resulting in an A at CinemaScore.

All of that means that "Birth" did as well as it possibly could do, especially among the audiences that were most likely to see it anyway.

5. Hurricane Matthew
In the end, though, nothing was going to draw people in several southeastern states to the movies when they were fleeing from Hurricane Matthew. Several movie chains closed their theaters throughout the region as millions evacuated their homes.

Box office analysts took the storm into account and revised their revenue projections down by about 5 percent. Between the hurricane and all the other reasons this weekend's movies gave potential moviegoers not to bother, maybe the theaters should be celebrating that they sold as many tickets as they did.

'Game of Thrones' Season 7 Casts More Mystery Roles

Emilia Clarke may not be having a blast on the set of "Game of Thrones" Season 7, but for new actors cast on the show, it has to be the thrill of a lifetime.

Watchers on the Wall recently shared casting notices for some new actors joining the HBO series in roles that have yet to be fully revealed. They may be tiny roles, they may be major. No clue yet. But keep in mind the previously casting calls for roles like a general, city guard, priest, warrior, young posh lord, and a Northern girl and boy.

Here are the latest bits of intel:

• Koner: Actor Joseph Quinn's agency CV shows he'll be appearing in Season 7 as a character named 'Koner.'" As WotW noted, there is no Koner in the books written by George R.R. Martin, so it's anyone's guess who that might be. (Perhaps the Gate Guard in this casting notice?) The CV/resume lists his director as "Various," which could indicate that he's in multiple episodes or it could indicate that the agency wasn't sure of the director so they left it blank for now. For some background, IMDb lists Joseph Quinn in the regular role of Arthur Havisham in the TV series "Dickensian."

• Frey? Another agency CV revealed Irish actor Paul Ward (height 6'0, character age range 48-52) as having "recently wrapped filming on Season 7 of HBO's Game of Thrones." Not sure what role he may have, but many WotW commenters have pointed out that he has a Frey look to him. Or he could play a guard or even a general.

• Northern girl: You may have seen a red-haired actress photographed on set with the core GoT cast. She was initially reported as Sophie Turner's (Sansa) body double, but Watchers on the Wall corrected that with the help of a commenter, who identified the actress as 19-year-old Megan Parkinson. The photo on set showed her in Northern style. The first casting notice for Season 7 included one for a 16-year-old Northern girl as part of "a high-stakes scene with leading cast members." That would fit with the photos, which showed her with Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and others.

• Rhaegar? This is more speculation than anything, but some fans think singer Devin Oliver may have been cast as young Rhaegar Targaryen (who did like to sing, as we've been told). Oliver posted this photo with a GoT Season 7 tease, and it found its way to Reddit and Mashable, etc.:

Well, sure, we may or may not have made an appearance in Season 7, too. (Spoiler alert: For us, it's may not.) All we know for sure is that Jim Broadbent will be playing a "significant" role in Season 7. We'll learn more in good time, and we're on standby for the first trailer, which probably won't be arriving until early 2017, with the seven-episode season set to premiere in the summer.

'John Wick 2': Ruby Rose Is Mute in 'Kooky' Sequel, Chapter 3 Already in Works

Posted:

The man. The myth. The legend. John Wick is back -- because, as Laurence Fishburne tells Keanu Reeves in the "John Wick: Chapter 2" trailer, he's not very good at retiring. Reeves's assassin has a lot of work ahead of him, not only in the 2017 sequel but in "John Wick: Chapter 3," which is already in the works.

Director Chad Stahelski talked to Collider at New York Comic Con, revealing some details about what's ahead in this movie and the third. "Orange Is the New Black" star Ruby Rose is part of the new cast, and you can see her battling Wick in the trailer. Apparently she will be more seen than heard in Chapter 2.

"I don't know if she was expecting 'Wick' to be as kooky as it really is, but she's mute in the movie, she does the whole thing in sign language. She was nervous for the first couple days, and then she just went for it."

Sounds like everyone went for it enough for Lionsgate to start planning a third film. As Stahelski told Collider:

"The studio has asked us to put our heads together and see if we can come up with something. Winston [played by Ian McShane] is a big part of the next one, so is Lance Reddick [who plays Charon]. We've got some ideas."

Winston is the owner of the Continental Hotel, showcased in the original film, with Charon as the concierge. We'd never say no to more screen time for McShane and Reddick, who are both billed as returning in Chapter 2. The sequel's plot forces Wick out of retirement (and over to Rome) to help a former associate seize control of a shadowy international assassins's guild.

Check out the new trailer:

"John Wick: Chapter 2" is scheduled for release February 10, 2017.

Matt Damon Calls 'The Great Wall' Backlash 'a F*ckin' Bummer'

Posted:

A new trailer for "The Great Wall" just came out, starring Matt Damon as a member of an elite force fighting for humanity on the iconic wall in China. It's a monster movie. Fictional. But the "whitewashing" backlash the stars and director Zhang Yimou faced when the first teaser came out was 100 percent real.

"Yeah, it was a f*ckin' bummer," Damon said during a New York Comic Con press conference (via Coming Soon). "I had a few reactions. I was surprised, I guess because it was based on a teaser, it wasn't even a full trailer let alone a movie. To get those charges levied against you... What bummed me out is I read The Atlantic religiously and there was an article in The Atlantic. I was like, 'Really, guys?' To me whitewashing was when Chuck Connors played Geronimo. [laughs] There are far more nuanced versions of it and I do try to be sensitive to that, but [co-star] Pedro Pascal called me and goes, 'Yeah, we are guilty of whitewashing. We all know only the Chinese defended the wall against the monster attack.'"

Pedro Pascal jumped in to joke, "Don't quote me!" Damon added, "Look, it was nice to react a little sarcastically because we were wounded by it. We do take that seriously." Pascal said, "We don't want to be kept from work that they wouldn't have the opportunity otherwise to see that is very specifically Chinese. It is a creature feature. It's a big, fantastical popcorn entertainment movie, but it has a visual style that is Zhang Yimou's and his only."

"The Great Wall" is the largest film ever shot entirely in China, and it's Yimou's first English language film. He released a statement (via Entertainment Weekly) in response to the white savior/whitewashing controversy:

"For the first time, a film deeply rooted in Chinese culture, with one of the largest Chinese casts ever assembled, is being made at tent pole scale for a world audience. I believe that is a trend that should be embraced by our industry. Our film is not about the construction of the Great Wall. Matt Damon is not playing a role that was originally conceived for a Chinese actor. The arrival of his character in our story is an important plot point. There are five major heroes in our story and he is one of them — the other four are all Chinese. The collective struggle and sacrifice of these heroes are the emotional heart of our film. As the director of over 20 Chinese language films and the Beijing Olympics, I have not and will not cast a film in a way that was untrue to my artistic vision. I hope when everyone sees the film and is armed with the facts they will agree."

Damon added that, if people watch the movie in February and still think there was whitewashing involved, "then I will listen to that with my whole heart. I will think about that and try to learn from that." But he said he would be "genuinely shocked" if people had that reaction after watching the movie, and feels "you are undermining your own credibility when you attack something without seeing it."

Here's the new trailer:

"The Great Wall" will be released February 17, 2017.

Did 'The Walking Dead' Premiere Clip Reveal 'Right Hand' Spoilers?

Posted:

Gotta HAND it to "The Walking Dead" for knowing how to keep fans talking, speculating, and freaking out until the Season 7 premiere.

The cast and producers were at New York Comic Con over the weekend and shared a jaw-dropping sneak peek scene from very early in the premiere episode. It shows the direct aftermath of Negan's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) kill, from the perspective of Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), who has enough blood on his face (right cheek) to have been close to the person killed, but perhaps not directly next to them?
In the clip (watch below), Rick glares at Negan, and whispers that he's going to kill him. Not today, not tomorrow, but he'll kill Negan. It's that Terminus bravado we've seen before, and Negan answers it right away. Negan asks his own right-hand man, Simon, what Rick had as a weapon. (A hatchet.) Then he taunts Rick, asking if he has his own right-hand man, or was that who Negan just bashed to death? Negan ultimately takes Rick's hatchet and drags our Ricktator into his own RV.

That's where the clip ends, and where our speculation begins.

Watch the scene:

First of all, who was killed? Maggie (Lauren Cohan) was to Rick's direct right, with Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) next to her. If it's a "man" who was killed, Abe seems like a decent suspect by proximity, even if Glenn (Steven Yeun), Daryl (Norman Reedus), and Michonne (Danai Gurira) are probably more direct choices for who Rick would pick as his right-hand men/women.

Second, the "right hand man" talk suggests Negan may be dragging Rick into the RV to do what was done to Rick in the "Walking Dead" comic book back in the Governor era. In the comic book, Rick had his hand chopped off by the Governor as punishment. The TV show never went there, but it's possible this season will pick up the iconic punishment in a storyline "remix," further showing how Negan is even more dangerous than the Governor, and not someone you can casually threaten. Or it could just be a promo tease to get fans speculating.

But it wouldn't be out of the question, since Season 7 premiere director Greg Nicotero said other things happen in the first episode that are even more heartbreaking than the Negan kill. Rick being shamed and maimed into losing his hand may or may not qualify as one of those things.

"The Walking Dead" Season 7 premieres Sunday, October 23 at 9 p.m. on AMC.

If you haven't caught up on Season 1, you can do that now.

"Lights Out"
Your electric bill may not appreciate this one, but the horror film starring Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Billy Burke, Maria Bello, and Alexander DiPersia is available for digital purchase October 11, before the Blu-ray and DVD debut October 25. Palmer plays Rebecca, who grew up never knowing that was real and not real when the lights went out. Now her little brother Martin (Bateman) is experiencing the same terrifying events that tested her sanity. Be very afraid of the dark!

"Goliath" (Amazon)This Amazon Original Series -- from David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro -- stars Billy Bob Thornton as a disgraced lawyer on the road to redemption after he agrees to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the biggest client of his former law firm. As Variety wrote, in a review praising Thornton's performance, "'Goliath' is essentially a combination of two stalwart TV forms — the law drama and the antihero serial — but Kelley and star Billy Bob Thornton imbue the proceedings with a great deal of texture, specificity, and energy. If you like an enjoyably combative courtroom scene or testy depositions in which prickly, smart people spar, 'Goliath' has a number of moments that recall the most bracing episodes of 'The Good Wife.'" Sounds good from here! The 10 episodes premiere October 14 on Amazon Video.

TV Worth Watching

"Supergirl" (Monday on The CW at 8 p.m.)
Faster than a speeding bullet, Melissa Benoist's Supergirl has taken her show from CBS to The CW! Season 2 starts with a new threat to National City, so Kara/Supergirl teams up with her cousin, Superman (guest star Tyler Hoechlin) to stop it. While Kara is thrilled to have family in town, Alex (Chyler Leigh) feels a bit left out. Meanwhile, Hank (David Harewood) and Supergirl are stunned by the pod that came crashing to Earth. The Season 2 premiere airs October 10, and you can read a lot more about it in Moviefone's exclusive interview with executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.

"Lip Sync Battle" (Wednesday on Spike at 9 p.m.)
Sir Ben Kingsley vs. John Cho. Gandhi vs. Sulu. Boom. 'Nough said. Season 3 starts Wednesday, October 12 -- yes, the show moved from Thursday to Wednesday -- and future lip sync-ers include Don Cheadle, Ruby Rose, Jay Leno, Laverne Cox, Lupita Nyong'o, Sarah Hyland, Wanda Sykes, Uzo Aduba, Milla Jovovich, America Ferrera, Regina Hall, Samira Wiley, Craig Ferguson, T.J. Miller, DeAndre Jordan, Jeff Dye, and Rob Riggle.

"Wolf Creek" (Friday on Pop at 10 p.m.)
Inspired by the 2005 cult horror film, and executive produced by its creator/director, this six-episode limited series television event premieres October 14 at Pop. John Jarratt reprises his movie role as the murdering psychopath Mick Taylor, who wreaks havoc in the Australian Outback. Except this time, things are little bit different: In the TV story, a 19-year-old American college student, played by Lucy Fry, survives the massacre of her parents and little brother and sets out to hunt down the killer and avenge her family.

Check out this exclusive clip where the family meets Mick Taylor:"Eyewitness" (Sunday on USA at 10 p.m.)
Julianne Nicholson, one of the best and most underrated actresses out there, stars as Sheriff Helen Torrance in this new crime drama -- based on a Norwegian series -- starting October 16. The first episode, called "Buffalo '07," opens with teenagers Philip and Lukas meeting to share a kiss, then witnessing a murder, which they don't report out of fear being outed. Complicating matters: Philip's foster mom is the sheriff, who's soon investigating the case.

New on Netflix

"Mascots" (Netflix Original)Get ready to cheer, Christopher Guest fans! The comedy icon's latest mockumentary is available on Netflix October 13. Jane Lynch, Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, Jennifer Coolidge, Bob Balaban, Fred Willard, Ed Begley Jr., Christopher Moynihan, Don Lake, Zach Woods, and Chris O'Dowd star in this comedy following several sports mascots who compete for the World Mascot Association championship's prestigious Gold Fluffy Award. Sounds vaguely like a "Best in Show" for mascots, so let's hope it's up to the same standard. (Or maybe even up to the 11 standard of "This Is Spinal Tap" and "Waiting For Guffman.")

"Sky Ladder: The Art of Cai Guo-Qiang" (Netflix Original)
Director Kevin Macdonald showcases Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang's in this explosive (literally!) documentary available for streaming on Netflix starting October 14. As Entertainment Weekly described, "[T]he documentary spends much of its svelte 76 minutes focusing on the one dream that has eluded Cai for 20 years: Sky Ladder, a 1,650 foot vertical trail of fire climbing into the skies. With Macdonald at the helm, plus Wes Anderson's career-long cinematographer Robert Yeoman behind the camera, the film becomes a spectacle on par with one of Cai's incredible artworks." Watch the trailer over here.

"Haters Back Off!" Season 1 (Netflix Original)Have you heard of Miranda Sings? Colleen Ballinger created the character on YouTube, and her Miranda Sings YouTube channel has almost 7 million subscribers and has received more than 1 billion views. Now Miranda has her own comedy show on Netflix, marking the first scripted series created by a YouTube personality. Here's Netflix's teaser for "Haters Back Off," which got its title from Miranda's catchphrase: "You don't become famous without attracting a few haters. Go inside the world of Miranda Sings in Haters Back Off. All episodes on Netflix October 14."
