What Elements from the Original 'Star Wars' Trilogy Need to Be in 'Episode VII'?

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Earlier this week, a photo of the Millenium Falcon being built for Star Wars: Episode VII was leaked onto the Web. This morning, J.J. Abrams sent out his own shot from the set, which cheekily confirmed that Han Solo's ship would be making an appearance. The director won with the true geeks, of course, because his photo involved a more obscure element from the original trilogy: the Dejarik board (or simply holochess board for those of you who aren't complete nerds for the franchise). It's made other appearances in animated series and novels and such, but really that prop is a nod to one particular scene in the very first movie. We can probably expect a bunch of callbacks in Episode VII, some of them for the sake of fan service and others as signs of a genuine...

Grading the Best (and Worst) Cameramen in Found-Footage Horror

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Recent years have seen the rise of an odd trend. Documentary films, once relegated to art house cinemas, have begun playing in major multiplexes and performing well at the box office. Perhaps the subject matter has a lot to do with it. The bulk of the hits aren't politically motivated or educational, but chilling looks at the world's greatest mysteries, disasters and horrors. These "found footage" documentaries give us a glimpse into the dark world lurking underneath our own, exposing threats that wouldn't be out of place in fictional horror movies. The fact that most of these movies contain footage of actual deaths (their creators rarely survive) has led to some degree of controversy, but to deny the existence and relevance of this new subgenre of...

Watch an Extended Preview for Guillermo del Toro's Crazy New Vampire Show 'The Strain'

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

How gross does the television adaptation for Guillermo del Toro's The Strain sound? Based on the description of the book, pretty nasty. Del Toro created the vampire-based horror series intending to debut it on television, but the filmmaker was unable to secure a buyer for the concept. He adapted it for a series of books with writer Chuck Hogan, but FX eventually came into the picture. Now, it's back to the small screen. The Strain premieres on July 13. Check out an extended TV spot for the show below. As website io9 points out, these are no ordinary vampires. The undead are likened to parasitic creatures, with some of their biology based on real animals. Warning: do not eat while reading what follows unless you have an iron stomach: The digestive and...

Comics on Film: The New 'X-Men' Timeline and How It May Impact the Franchise Moving Forward

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Although some recent entries in the series had proven disappointing, fans and critics alike have sung the praises of Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past as a return to form for the original modern comic book film franchise. In addition to being perhaps the best film of the series thus far (though it still has to contend with X2 for that title), DoFP also did some very necessary work on the continuity of the series, bringing a greater creative flow to the series' timeline. Things now clearly begin for the characters with 2011's X-Men: First Class, and it's also likely that the original 2000 film is still canon, but practically everything else is pretty much done away with. The presence of certain characters alive and well at...

Celebrate the World Cup by Watching Guy Ritchie's Fantastic Soccer Short for Nike

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Football… soccer… call it what you like, but Guy Ritchie has created a three-minute short that shows how to take the sport "to the next level" for Nike. We get to watch the action on and off the field from a point-of-view perspective, revealing the struggles, victories and fun behind the game and the life of a footballer. Geek Tyrant spotted the ad from a few years back, which Ritchie films in his gritty, frenetic style. There's puking, teeth falling out, scantily clad women, and all the stuff you'd expect Ritchie to include in an action-based ad. The filmmaker clearly wants us to know that soccer is much more than kicking a ball around and that it can be just as intense as American football. In honor of the World Cup in Brazil...

Trivia: The Word "Lightsaber" Is Only Used Once in the Original 'Star Wars'

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

We've seen a lot of fan-made Star Wars videos in our time, but this one has got to win an award for being--we want to say ambitious, but really it's just kind of insane. In the following 43-minute video, Tom Murphy VII took all the English words spoken in the first Star Wars movie, then sorted them alphabetically and counted how many times each word was used. Some fun facts from his YouTube page: -- The word "lightsaber" only appears once in this film. -- There are 43m5s of spoken English, 81m39s of other. -- The most common word is "the," of course, said 368 times. -- The word with most screen time is "you," at 52.56 seconds. -- There are 1,695 different words, and 11,684 total words. -- The longest words are...

Rumor Roundup: 'Indiana Jones', 'Dr. Strange' and 'Batman v Superman' Casting

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

We live for a good rumor around these parts – because even if they’re outlandish and totally implausible, it’s always fun to look at these sorts of things and consider the possibilities. Today, we’ve got three hot new bits of gossip making the rounds. Is there any truth to them? Only time will tell. First up, we’ve got a bit of suspicious casting news involving Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice -- one of the most anticipated films of 2016. The major parts have been filled, but a Spanish website – El Multicine – has gotten tongues wagging with a tidbit that another big name actress might be joining the fray. According to the site, Emily Blunt could play a role in the new film. Here’s the translated version...

Mondo Poster Premiere: William Friedkin's 'Sorcerer' Gets the Jay Shaw Treatment

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 01:05 PM PDT

William Friedkin's Sorcerer is one of those movies that, despite being a bold and truly epic piece of filmmaking, seemed to be swallowed a bit by time. Thankfully Warner Bros. recently got together with the Exorcist and French Connection director to liberate his movie from the legal woes that kept it buried, and let him do a complete restoration of the 1977 film about a group of rugged men from all over the world taking on a deadly mission to transport unstable dynamite through the jungle. The result is a gorgeous new Blu-ray for the film that's absolutely worth picking up, but this is also a movie of such vision and scale that you truly should see it on the big screen. And if you live in Austin, Texas, you can do just that this weekend. The Alamo Drafthouse is...

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 12:20 PM PDT

Disney and Lucasfilm have been talking about doing a number of Star Wars spin-off movies for quite a while now, causing fans everywhere to speculate about characters like Boba Fett and Yoda getting their own movies. Not long ago it was revealed that the first of these movies would be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) and written by Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli), and now we've got confirmation that another one will be directed by Josh Trank (Chronicle). Disney has not revealed what or who the movie will be about, so we'll just pick apart this quote from the StarWars.com announcement: "We're thrilled to welcome Josh into the family," says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. "He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of...

J.J. Abrams Tweets 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Photo from On Board the 'Millennium Falcon'

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 11:30 AM PDT

This week has been chock-full of images from the set of Star Wars: Episode VII, reportedly leaked to TMZ, which has posted upwards of 80 or 90 images from both exterior and interior sets, including a still-under-construction Millennium Falcon. While fans questions whether the leaks were intentional or not, we may have received a tiny clue today in the form of an official tweet from J.J. Abrams' production company's account, Bad Robot, along with a message from J.J. himself.   pic.twitter.com/wQYfaVtwFU — Bad Robot (@bad_robot) June 4, 2014     The note reads: "I wish people would stop leaking photos from Episode VII. And making ridiculous claims that the Millennium Falcon is in the movie." So does the joke at the end mean...
