Why Tom Cruise Is the Greatest Living Movie Star

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

For as long as there have been movies, there have been movie stars, but few movie stars have been better at being movie stars than Tom Cruise. Forget about his personal life. Forget about what happens offscreen. If you concentrate simply on his body of work and his performances, there has rarely been a more effective leading man than Cruise. With Edge of Tomorrow hitting theaters (and reminding everyone that no one is as good at leading a mainstream action movie as him), it's time to pay tribute to current king of blockbusters. In a world where movie stars are a dying breed, Cruise makes it look easy. He always plays a type... There's no getting around it: Tom Cruise does play a type. Even when he's playing a funny character or a romantic lead, he tends to...

The Alamo Drafthouse Has a Very Special Way for You to See the Kick-ass 'Snowpiercer' Early

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

For years now the folks at the Alamo Drafthouse have been changing the way people see movies. They've got a highly publicized no-talking policy. Instead of ads before a movie, they show vintage clips relating to the movie. They don't admit people into the theater after a movie has started. You select your seat(s) ahead of time, so there's no need to get to the theater an hour early. And you can order some pretty fantastic food and drinks while you watch. It's a great, great way to see a movie. But every now and then the Drafthouse pushes the movie-watching experience even further with something called a Rolling Roadshow. For these events, they screen a movie outside a theater at a venue with some kind of thematic connection to the movie. In the past...

See What Your Favorite Bill Murray Movie Reveals About You

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Actors don't get more likable than Bill Murray — the cinematic everyman who will crash your kickball game and read you poetry. What's not to love? We can point to several classic Murray roles and deem them favorites. A new webcomic explores just what it is we adore about those Murraylicious parts, which reflect our personalities more than we realized. The handy table comes from Toronto artist Steve Patrick Adams. Think of it like a Murray astrological chart for movie nerds. In love with Ghostbusters? Apparently you're not scared of ghosts, but afraid of your own heart. Have a thing for Rushmore? "You have good taste, which overlaps with a good friend's taste. You end up hating each other for it." Sounds about right. Have fun with this...

Does This Movie Scene Feature the Worst Special Effects of All Time?

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Where do we even begin with the film Jaws 3D? The 1983 movie, starring Dennis Quaid as the son of Chief Brody from ye olde Amity Island and Lou Gossett Jr., is one of the worst chapters in the Jaws franchise. Oh, did we mention that Manimal (is awesome) star Simon MacCorkindale also got suckered into a role for this mess? Jaws 3D used technology as its biggest selling point and was one of several films that popped up during the 3D renaissance. The results were less than stellar, but thankfully the movie has survived as an object of fascination — which is why website Bloody Disgusting recently examined a scene from Jaws 3D. "Does This Jaws 3D Scene Have the Worst Special Effects of All Time?" the site asked. "This isn't some home video...

Sigourney Weaver Wants to Finish Ripley's Story in One More 'Alien' Sequel

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley character has become one of the shining examples of how to write compelling feminine characters in Hollywood blockbusters – and the actress was honored for her efforts in fighting off countless Xenomorphs at the Hero Complex Film Festival over the weekend. Guests were treated to screenings of Alien and Aliens, but the real intriguing stuff came out during an interview Weaver conducted at the event. In it, the actress reveals she’d be game for doing at least one more film as the iconic character – to bring closure to the story started all those years ago in Ridley Scott’s film. “I feel after going to a couple of these Comic-Cons and meeting so many fans who are so passionate about the series, passionate about...

What Movie Do You Watch When You Need a Good Cry?

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Movies exist for every mood. And we all have our favorites to put us in a certain place. There's the movie that is quickest to make us laugh and the movie that most easily inspires us. There's even the movie that can be turned to for anger, though that's not a place we often wish to go. Sadness, however, is sometimes desired. There are movies specifically made to make us cry. They're called tearjerkers, of course, and there's one out this weekend. If you're going to see The Fault in Our Stars, you might already know to bring tissues. You likely are anticipating it as a good movie to help you get out a good cry.  I don't think that's a spoiler anymore than it's a spoiler to say we expect a Will Ferrell movie to make us laugh...

'Hercules' Trailer: Watch Dwayne Johnson Battle a Three-Headed Hellhound

Posted: 03 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

This is the year of Hercules with Summit Entertainment's The Legend of Hercules in theaters earlier in 2014 and Brett Ratner's Hercules arriving next month. We have a trailer for that film, starring  Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the eponymous hero. The film is based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars, but the son of Zeus has been a familiar figure in film for decades. It looks like Ratner's version is heavy on the beasties, as we're treated to a glimpse of a vicious Cerberus almost immediately. That's the three-headed hellhound who guards the underworld. The film follows Hercules, who has endured his legendary 12 labors. The King of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules' help in defeating a warlord, and his...
