The Geek Beat: Why You Shouldn't Be Upset About 'Ant-Man' Changing Directors

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Like a lot of people, I was surprised when the news broke a few weeks ago that Edgar Wright and Marvel's Ant-Man movie had parted ways. The Shaun of the Dead director had been attached to the film almost a decade at that point, prompting more than a few outlets to start referring to the project as Edgar Wright's Ant-Man in recent years. However, rather than cursing the unfairness of it all and shaking my fist at Marvel's apparent inability to recognize true genius when they see it, I found myself responding to the news by feeling, well... a little relieved. Now, before you sharpen your pitchforks or light those torches, hear me out: I love Wright's films. I can honestly say that every project with his name on it is – and has been since Spaced and...

New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'Jack Ryan' and 'Non-Stop' Thrill While 'True Detective' and 'Cosmos' Dig into the Soul

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 06:30 PM PDT

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - Paramount - Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD Director: Kenneth Branagh Cast: Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Peter Andersson, Kenneth Branagh. Full cast + crew It'll be a bummer if Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit doesn't spawn a new franchise of films based on the beloved character created by Tom Clancy (previously played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck). However, even if no Jack Ryan sequels get green-lit, it'll be okay because at least we got this version, which holds up quite well to repeat viewings. What's so nice about Shadow Recruit is how measured and balanced it all is. It's a smart, patient spy thriller that isn't filled with ludicrous end-of-the-world scenarios. The...

You're Old: 'Speed' Came Out 20 Years Ago This Week

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Pop quiz, hotshot! Speed is turning 20, and you want to reference it without saying "pop quiz, hotshot," because that's so overused. What do you do? What do you do? While I think of an answer, let me point out that Speed came out 20 years ago this week, so if you saw it in theaters, You're Old®. You might even be above 50, never to drop below it again. Like the bus at the center of it, Speed was a risky proposition that could have ended in disaster. The director and the writer, Jan de Bont and Graham Yost, hadn't directed or written a movie before. (De Bont was an experienced cinematographer; Yost had worked in TV.) Everyone in the cast was famous, but no one was currently a major movie star. All the action is set in uncomfortable places (a bus, a subway...

'The Lion King' Is Getting a TV Sequel That'll Spawn a New Series

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

The Lion King, like Bambi, is a particularly notable movie because it helped teach an entire generation of young kids the idea that someday their parents will die. It may be morbid to think of the film in those terms, but it absolutely taught youngsters about loss and moving on and living in the shadow of your parents. That's also why it's a tad funny that Disney can't actually let The Lion King go. The 1994 movie has already spawned an incredibly popular stage musical, three seasons of an animated show (The Lion King's Timon and Pumbaa), two straight-to-video sequels (Simba's Pride and The Lion King 1.5), and a 3D conversion rerelease that grossed a shocking $94 million. But there's still more money to be made out of the franchise, and it will all be...

'Harbinger Down' Trailer: Old-School Horror Fans Better Pay Attention to This Movie

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

No amount of impeccable CGI can replace the feeling of a tangible, practical, on-set special effect. It's why the T. rex breakout scene from Jurassic Park can still wow audiences 20 years later, and it's why the monster effects from The Thing are still mind-blowing today. If you agree, then have we got a movie for you: It's called Harbinger Down, and it's the directorial debut of effects masters Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr., who between them have worked on Aliens, The Terminator, Predator, Tremors, Starship Troopers and many, many more genre classics (pictured above are just a few of their company's creations). We last covered Harbinger Down when Gillis and Woodruff Jr. were trying to raise money on Kickstarter to help cover some of their costs...

Francis Ford Coppola Says the Future of Movies Will Be Live Cinema

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Francis Ford Coppola gave a talk at the closing of the Producer Guild‘s Produced By Conference that ignited the imaginations of cineastes in the audience. He predicted that the next wave of cinema will be live. “The cinema can be composed for the audience while they’re seeing it. Movies no longer have to be set in stone and can be interpreted for an audience," he said. Coppola's sees these live films screenable in theaters and on mobile devices, with the potential for live movies to be "30 percent prerecorded as the actors do it live." He stated, "You can do anything and you can do it live.” In fact, Coppola teased that he might even consider executing his own movie in this manner. His upcoming multigenerational tale of an...

Who's Ready for a Fourth 'Mighty Ducks' Movie?

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

With the Stanley Cup Finals winding down (so long, Rangers!), and a long hockeyless summer on the horizon, this seems like the perfect time to talk about a fourth Mighty Ducks film. Luckily enough, that’s exactly what producer Jordan Kerner is doing in this recent interview, where he reveals that there have been ongoing talks for a fourth film in the series that helped launch a real NHL franchise. “There have been a number of times that we have discussed with the studio the idea of either bringing it back and bringing it back possibly with one or two of the guys who are now in their thirties as the coaches, and having a few more of them be their friends in their lives and having the kids come back. And I’ve been pitched a story two or three times. It...

'Leprechaun Origins' Trailer Brings Back the '90s Horror Icon

Posted: 10 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT

On the list of horror’s least scary villains, Warwick Davis’ title character in the Leprechaun films rates right near the top. The evil little imp was often more funny than terrifying – a fact that was always a disappointment for me because it felt like the character could have been frightening in the right hands. Maybe the character will get his chance to terrify in the upcoming reboot Leprechaun Origins, which is backed by Lionsgate and WWE Studios. This new trailer for the film doesn’t have a single laugh in it, which is a promising sign, at least. The setup should look familiar to anyone who’s seen a horror film in the past three decades: Young Americans head to an isolated locale to do their thing (Ireland, in this case), and before you know...
