Film Face-off: 'Blazing Saddles' vs. 'A Million Ways to Die in the West'

Posted: 02 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

There can be only one. Since 1974, the answer to the question, "What is the best Western comedy?" has been Blazing Saddles. Whether he likes it or not, Seth MacFarlane's new film A Million Ways to Die in the West will be compared to Mel Brooks' classic movie, and not just by me in this Film Face-off. For those who are already upset that I'm not talking about Shanghai Noon, City Slickers, Wagons East and The Shakiest Gun in the West, I don't know what to tell you. Oh wait, I do... stop it. Now, on to the battle in the wild, wild west.   Plot/Lead Blazing Saddles In order to get rid of a town on a future railroad path, a corrupt politician (Harvey Korman) hires a black sheriff (Cleavon Little), who is more cunning than...

See What 'Cloverfield' and 'The Blair Witch Project' Would Look Like Without Shaky Cam

Posted: 02 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

One of the biggest complaints leveled against found-footage films is their overreliance on “shaky cam” images that tend to give some folks motion sickness and headaches. Cloverfield, a really great giant-monster movie that goes a bit overboard with nausea-inducing camera techniques, has always been a prime offender in this category. If you’ve held off on seeing the film because you were afraid you might have to OD on Dramamine to make it through to the end credits, you can now rejoice. There’s an interesting Internet phenomenon happening out there in film-geek circles – one wherein fans take shaky footage and run it through image stabilization programs to make it less bouncy. An enterprising Vimeo user has used software on the entirety of Cloverfield...

Now You Can Watch Stanley Kubrick's First Movie, 'Fear and Desire,' Online for Free

Posted: 02 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Often we hear stories about directors who think less of their early work, but no filmmaker was more critical of his foray into cinema than the perfectionist otherwise known as Stanley Kubrick. The obsessive director reportedly tried to destroy all copies of his 1953 debut feature, Fear and Desire. The “amateur” film, as Kubrick described it, was almost lost to the cinematic ether when distributor Joseph Burstyn died and Kubrick discouraged any commercial distribution. The rarely screened film underwent a major restoration process and made its television debut in 2011. Kino Video followed up with a DVD and Blu-ray release in 2012. The antiwar drama is now available online, preceded by a brief 1966 interview with Kubrick. Fear and Desire centers on four...

UPDATE 6/2/14: StarWars.com has just revealed that Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave) and Gwendoline Christie (Brienne on Game of Thrones) have both joined Star Wars: Episode VII. Both are amazing additions, and should hopefully help calm the cries of everyone who felt there weren't nearly enough females in the cast.   Previously: Update: For those who lamented the lack of females in the cast, new reports reveal that one major female role has yet to be cast. Channing Tatum Says 'Jupiter Ascending' Almost Killed Him

Posted: 02 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Channing Tatum and his muscles made the cover story for the June issue of GQ, which delves into the actor’s favorite things (beer, bourbon, cake), childhood memories (he had an invisible friend), and upcoming film projects. Tatum will be returning to undercover shenanigans in 22 Jump Street — the sequel to the 2012 action-comedy based on the 1987 TV series 21 Jump Street — on June 18. But GQ has focused on the actor’s July theatrical feature for its cover story: Jupiter Ascending — the first science fiction film the Wachowskis have directed since their Matrix trilogy. Tatum plays Caine Wise in the movie, a “genetically engineered interplanetary warrior” who assists Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), a “destitute...
