'In a Valley of Violence' Director Ti West Explains What's Boring About Movies That are Too Realistic

Posted: 28 Mar 2016 08:30 PM PDT

Ti West is seen as a horror guy. That's just what happens when you make movies like The Roost, The Innkeepers and The House of the Devil. Even his 2013 movie The Sacrament, about a team of journalists probing a cult, often gets called a horror movie even though that's not strictly the case. So you might think that his new movie, In a Valley of Violence, is a horror movie. It's not. In a Valley of Violence, starring Ethan Hawke as a drifter who crosses some unsavory figures in a small town run by a reluctant marshal (John Travolta), is a western through and through. That said, one of the things that makes it such a smart movie is the way it takes a few key tropes of the genre and twists them around. It's kind of like deconstructing what makes so many westerns work...

Comics on Film: 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' From a Dark Knight Fan's Perspective

Posted: 28 Mar 2016 07:00 PM PDT

WARNING: Some Spoilers for Batman v Superman will be found in this article. Director Zack Snyder’s follow-up to 2013’s Man of Steel has finally hit theaters, and if anything can be said about it with absolute certainty, it's this: it’s extremely polarizing. For every fan of the characters aligning with the critics’ largely negative view on the film, there seems to be an equally large amount of ardent defenders, taking up arms in the verbal war over how “true” the film is to the characters, and whether or not it succeeds as a launching pad for the new DC Comics Extended Universe that will be expanding in the months and years to come. Still, considering how much material there is in the film, the one element that...

First 'Lights Out' Trailer Looks Like a Brilliantly Simple Horror Movie

Posted: 28 Mar 2016 05:30 PM PDT

Back in 2013 a British horror production company called Bloody Cuts held the "Who's There?" Short Film Challenge. It had five simple rules. The short had to be horror, it had to cost less than $1,000 to make, it could not be longer than 3 minutes, it had to be uploaded before the end of the year, and it had to somehow deal with the question "Who's there?" David F. Sandberg, a director who had already made a bunch of short films with horror punchlines, entered the contest with a very simple, very effective short called Lights Out (watch it here). It was about a woman going to bed, but every time she turned out the light a woman appeared in the dark. That's pretty much it. It was a great short, but it didn't even win the contest. Lights Out got...

James Wan Says the 'Aquaman' Movie Will Show the Badass Side of the DC Superhero

Posted: 28 Mar 2016 02:30 PM PDT

Thanks to the breakout success of the gritty shocker Saw in 2004, James Wan was immediately tagged as a filmmaker to watch. His next two movies, the atmospheric horror tale Dead Silence and the brutal thriller Death Sentence, may not have performed well at the box office, but they showed the increasing range of his talent. They also set the stage for a trio of intense and popular fright flicks from Wan: Insidious (2010), The Conjuring (2013) and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013). After the popular success of those films, Wan took on the action blockbuster Furious 7 after director Justin Lin stepped away from the franchise. Wan guided the movie through its many challenges, including the unexpected death of Paul Walker, and Furious 7 was a giant success worldwide. The filmmaker...
