Comics on Film: Here's What You Need to Know About the New Spider-Man

Posted: 11 Mar 2016 07:30 PM PST

Back in May of 2014, just after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had hit theaters, this very column made the case for why Marvel’s arguably most iconic hero should be allowed to come into the fold of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the time, his fifth film from Sony Pictures was doing decent business, but it became pretty clear that the critical reception enjoyed by the film was decidedly harsher than every other major Spidey film, including the infamous third film from director Sam Raimi. In that previous edition of Comics on Film, we tried to make the case for all of the positive things that could happen if Spidey was allowed to stand alongside the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Back then, we said, “Bringing Spidey into the Marvel...

8 Great Sequels You Can Watch Without Seeing the Original

Posted: 11 Mar 2016 04:30 PM PST

If you're looking for a direct sequel to 2008's Cloverfield this weekend, you're out of luck. The new movie 10 Cloverfield Lane is barely even a sequel in name. It's not "Cloverfield 2." But the use of the word "cloverfield" in the title and the fact that it's also produced by J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot shingle suggests that it's more related than it is. Instead, 10 Cloverfield Lane is the second installment in an anthology series, ala an episode of The Twilight Zone or Black Mirror. And it's a really great one at that. There's no real connection between Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane in terms of narrative continuity or characters, and while that is rare it's not unheard of. It just used to be...

These Two Newcomers Just Landed Big Parts in Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' and Christopher Nolan's 'Dunkirk'

Posted: 11 Mar 2016 01:30 PM PST

Hollywood loves to discover unknown actors and make them stars. In perhaps the most famous example, producer David Selznick took more than two years to select Vivien Leigh to portray Scarlett O'Hara, the iconic heroine of Gone With the Wind. She was almost a complete unknown outside of her home country of England, but thanks to her sterling performance, she quickly become a star in Hollywood. In 1996, little known Matthew McConaughey landed a leading role in A Time to Kill and quickly established himself as a big star, just three years after his notable yet tiny part in Dazed and Confused.    Now newcomers are looking to make big impressions with roles in two major upcoming productions.
