Ricky Gervais Fakes the News in 'Special Correspondents' Trailer

Posted:

Special CorrespondentsWhy report from dangerous front lines when you can kick back in a comfy studio in New York?

That's exactly what Ricky Gervais and Eric Bana do on their radio show in "Special Correspondents," an upcoming Netflix movie written and directed by Gervais.
Here, he plays a sound engineer for a news radio show hosted by Bana. They pretend to report live from strife-stricken Ecuador, but then things take a turn for the absurd when they are presumed missing in that country — all while being safe and sound in New York City. Vera Farmiga, America Ferrera, and Benjamin Bratt also star.

Say what you will about Gervais's awards hosting efforts, but his scripted work has yielded some funny results. "Special Correspondents" is the latest collaboration between Gervais and Netflix, after his series "Derek." The movie will be available to stream starting April 29.

Unforgettable Disney Channel TV Shows, Ranked From Least to Most Ridiculous

Posted:

Is it a rule that Disney Channel TV shows have to have the most absurd premises possible? When their development team gets together they're probably just like, "Let's make these scenarios as outrageous as we can, people."

But that's the beauty of their programming. The shows might be about fantastic things like wizards, psychics, and double-life leading pop stars, but it works. These series have brought us so much goofy joy that we wouldn't have it any other way.

Here, we look back at 8 memorable TV shows from the Disney Channel and rank them from totally believable to totally ridiculous.

Saoirse Ronan and Don Cheadle Might Be the Best 'Catchphrase' Players Ever

Posted:

Sometimes it's fun to watch painfully bad games of "Catchphrase" on "The Tonight Show," but it's also kind of a rush to see experts in action. Last night, Saoirse Ronan and Don Cheadle were those experts. The struggle was NOT real for either of them.

The actors brought their A-games against each other -- the Irish actress (who had a broken finger) was paired with Jimmy Fallon, and the American actor worked with Steve Higgins. Saoirse and Jimmy only lost their rhythm a couple of times, and it wouldn't have mattered in a less competitive match. Seriously, though, some of the clues weren't that great, but it was like the pairs had their minds connected -- like the Borg in "Star Trek." Resistance was futile!

Watch and see:

Gotta love the "Boom!" Don Cheadle yells after each successful guess. He was on the show to promote his new movie "Miles Ahead," and the charming Irish lass talked about making her debut on Broadway in "The Crucible."

'Hannah Montana' Cast: Where Are They Now?

Posted:

Hard to believe, but the most famous member of the Cyrus family used to be papa Billy Ray. That all changed 10 years ago, on March 24, 2006, with the debut of Disney's "Hannah Montana," which unleashed daughter Miley upon the world.

Like her TV character on the 2006-11 series, Miley Cyrus was both a regular teenager and a flamboyant pop star chafing against her own squeaky-clean image. We've all seen how that tension has played out for Cyrus over the past decade, but what of the rest of Team Hannah? Here's what's become of the show's cast in the years since Cyrus took a wrecking ball to her Disney persona.
HANNAH MONTANA - Moises Arias as "Rico," Jason Earles as "Jackson Stewart," Billy Ray Cyrus as "Robbie Stewart," Miley Cyrus as "Hannah Montana," Mitchel Musso as "Oliver Oken" and Emily Osment as "Lilly Truscott" on "Hannah Montana" on the Disney Channel. (DISNEY CHANNEL/BOB D'AMICO)

'Bridget Jones's Baby' Trailer Adds McDreamy to the Daddy Drama

Posted:

She's back! is still the Bridget Jones we know and love and occasionally pity, even a dozen years after we last saw her in "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason." The new trailer for "Bridget Jones's Baby," which comes out this fall, starts with a reminder of Bridge's usual drama, playing "All By Myself," until the fed-up singleton tells the music to "f--k off."

So, yeah, it's kind of a NSFW trailer in that way, but otherwise it's back to the usual storyline of Bridge choosing between two hot men, one of them being the obviously perfect Mark Darcy played by the still obviously perfect . This time, she also has a new Prince Charming -- they even have a Cinderella slipper moment in the trailer -- in Jack Qwant, played by .

One of the guys is the father of her soon-to-be-born baby. Which guy? She doesn't know, but she tries to reassure her mother that there's at least a 50 percent chance that it's Mark's baby. "A 50 percent chance?!" her mother gasps in horror. "Did you have a threeway?!"

Watch the trailer, which also includes a great Emma Thompson scene, and a cameo from Ed Sheeran:Bridget Jones's Baby (2016) - Trailer No. 1
"Bridget Jones's Baby" is scheduled for release on September 16.

15 Times Willow Rosenberg Was the Best Part of 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'

Posted:

Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) was the sensitive voice of reason on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Even when she went full-on evil, you couldn't be mad at her because she's such a gentle little butterfly on the inside (hey, she'd just gone through something super traumatic, so LAY OFF). She's just the best.

Here are the 15 times we loved Willow the most.

Peter Jackson Told Jake Gyllenhaal 'You Are the Worst Actor' After Awful Audition

Posted:

2016 SXSW - Jake Gyllenhaal KeynoteJake Gyllenhaal was not precious to . Get it? Precious? Yes, it's bad, but apparently not as bad as Gyllenhaal's audition for Frodo, 's eventual role in "The Lord of the Rings." That was so bad, Gyllenhaal told Jimmy Fallon, that Jackson not only facepalmed, he followed up by telling Gyllenhaal, "You are the worst actor I've ever seen."

Gyllenhaal tells the story so well. It sounds like he didn't even really want the role, but his agents were so pumped about the idea of him being a hobbit, they sent him to the audition with no information, failing to even tell him that he was supposed to be British. That's apparently what Peter Jackson said, after calling him the worst actor; he asked Gyllenhaal, "Did anyone tell you that you were supposed to have an accent?" Gyllenhaal said, "I was like 'No.' He was like, 'Well, fire your agents.'" But they were so excited for him!

JGyll said he's had a lot of bad, failed auditions over the years, including one for "Dude, Where's My Car" (which Fallon declared "a classic," for some reason). Watch the video to hear the actor's super-serious take on the role.

It's a good thing Jake Gyllenhaal has been able to establish himself with some amazing roles -- including in "Nightcrawler," "Zodiac," "Southpaw," "Prisoners," and "Brokeback Mountain" -- or we might have to believe he was the worst.

And just for fun, watch Gyllenhaal with Fallon in this ridiculous "Point Pleasant Police Department" sketch:

His new movie "Demolition" opens April 8.

Watch Tom Hiddleston Yodel, and Discuss Those James Bond Rumors

Posted:

Has Tom Hiddleston ruined his chance of being 007? As Jimmy Kimmel warned him last night, "James Bond does not yodel in any situation." And yet Hiddleston just yodeled on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," illustrating the skills he picked up playing American icon Hank Williams in "I Saw the Light."

As the brave actor put it, "There comes a time in a man's life when he's called upon to yodel." Truth.

The Bond discussion came first, after Kimmel asked Hiddleston about his role in "The Night Manager." The "Avengers" star had previously said he would embrace the opportunity to play Bond, but on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" he hedged a bit, saying discussion on the next Bond is a national pastime in England. It sounded like he was saying every British actor gets asked about it in every interview, and we shouldn't read anything into it. Kimmel asked a good question -- whether Hiddleston thought there would ever be an American Bond, since there's a British Superman, and a British Hank Williams right in front of him. Basically, Jimmy was trying to get himself cast, but it's a fair point to keep in mind.

Then the discussion turned fully to Hiddleston's research to play Hank Williams, with the actor noting, "I can yodel now." Kimmel pushed him to demonstrate, so head to around the 3 minute mark of this video to watch Hiddleston yodeling part of "Long Gone Lonesome Blues."

His cute little smile after yodeling really sells the whole thing.

"I Saw the Light" opens this Friday, March 25.

The Early 'Batman v Superman' Reviews Are Discouraging, and Unfair?

Posted:

Why so serious? That seems to be a major complaint from critics who just saw "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" before its March 25 wide release. But, hey, at least they liked Wonder Woman!

The long-awaited showdown between 's Batman and 's Superman has not been embraced by many critics, so far. As of Wednesday morning (March 23) it has only a 40 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, only 62 reviews have been posted at this point, so there's time for a comeback.

Most of the reviews are mixed, whether labeled fresh or rotten. The length and somber tone were singled out in several critiques, as if every superhero movie now needs to be a non-stop one-liner comedy showcase like "Avengers," "Guardians of the Galaxy," and "Deadpool." You can find comparisons to Marvel movies in a few critiques, which seems a bit unfair -- we don't need DC to copy Marvel's formula, they are setting up their own game.
And even though Ben Affleck seems to be accepted as the new Batman, the strongest praise was for Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, who isn't on screen that much this time. Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor was more polarizing, earning praise and blame, depending on the critic.

Here's a selection of sometimes conflicting critiques, to give you an idea of the credits and complaints:

"Overlong, underdeveloped and almost entirely humorless, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may please die-hard fans by pitting two DC icons against each other. Everyone else may want to wait for the next Marvel movie."
Newsday

"A near-total drag, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice plays like a loose, unofficial quarter-billion-dollar remake of The Odd Couple, in which Oscar and Felix are literally trying to kill each other."
Chicago Tribune

"Constantly threatening to collapse from self-seriousness, this epic has way too much of everything, including CGI and Oscar winners up the wazoo."
New York Post

"Gorging on bombast and self-importance, swamped by its own mythology, Batman v Superman is loud, sprawling, and distracted. The action jumps around almost as fast as a man can fly, but nowhere near as smoothly."
Screen Daily

"When the head-to-head heavy hitting finally transpires -- be patient, for it takes some time to get there -- Dawn of Justice delivers the shock and awe on a level befitting a superhero blockbuster of such massive scale."
Herald Sun

"There are moments that make the whole enterprise worthwhile, and introduces an intriguing new Batman. But it's also cluttered and narratively wonky; a few jokes wouldn't have gone amiss, either."
Empire Online

"BvS will please those either waiting for the two main players to lock horns on a movie screen, or those who've just been pining for Wonder Woman forever."
USA Today

"It's overstuffed, confusing, and seriously crippled by Eisenberg's over-the-top performance. As the megalomaniac tech mogul hell-bent on bringing our heroes to their knees, the actor is a grating cartoon of manic motormouth tics. [...] Dawn of Justice starts off as an intriguing meditation about two superheroes turning to an all-too-human emotion: hatred out of fear of the unknown. Two and a half hours later it winds up somewhere very far from that—but at the same time, all too familiar. It's another numbing smash-and-bash orgy of CGI mayhem with an ending that leaves the door open wide enough to justify the next 10 installments. Is it too late to demand a rematch? C+"
Entertainment Weekly

"In a picture that's constantly in danger of being ground down by its own gloom, the brittle lightness of Eisenberg's high-strung savant is a relief. His sentences unspool like wiry puzzles; in need of Ritalin, he speaks in riddles. The stunning and aristocratic Gal Gadot shows up, all too briefly, as Diana Prince/Wonderwoman: It's a delight to watch her laugh in the face of danger, which is exactly the opposite of the demands placed on poor Cavill and Affleck."
Time

"All the Internet resistance to Affleck being cast as Batman seems silly when you see him sharing the screen with Cavill, as Affleck is easily the superior actor. (Cavill is solid, but there's not all that much difference in his facial expressions registering anger, fear, pain or love. He winces quite a bit.) There's not a moment when we don't believe Affleck as Bruce Wayne or as Batman. Amy Adams' Lois Lane is a modern, self-sufficient, strong woman — but she still needs rescuing from Superman every other week. Jesse Eisenberg's twitchy, self-conscious mannerisms can be irritating in some performances, but he's a creepy delight here as Lex Luthor."
Chicago Sun-Times

"The silver lining in the depressing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice turns out to be that we can still look forward to 2017's Wonder Woman with something approaching a sense of hope. We're calling it better than nothing."
Digital Spy

And here's a "Super Reviewer" critique from a fan:

*sigh* I wanted to like this movie. Honestly, I did. I enjoyed Man of Steel, and I didn't hate this one - it has its moments - but I found myself disappointed and actually bored for the vast majority of it. The cast is all fine, with the exception of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. When I heard he was cast, I was very optimistic. I figured he would play it as a combination of his Mark Zuckerberg and his character from Now You See Me - somewhat of a sociopath and always the smartest guy in the room. But no, he played it very... weird, and almost cartoony.
Martin Bishop

But there is good news for DC/Warner Bros. A full 98 percent of users (more than 117,000) voted that they want to see "BvS," which bodes well for the box office. That may be all that matters with this film, since they need momentum going into "Suicide Squad," which should have the humor that some critics felt was missing in "BvS." And this does seem to tease out Wonder Woman nicely, and her solo film arrives in 2017, after "Suicide Squad."

So as long as fans watch this movie and stick around for the next segments, the DC Extended Universe should be OK. But hopefully fans who watch "BvS" this weekend see it as the movie they needed and deserved.

All of Shonda Rhimes's Shondaland Shows, Ranked

Posted:

"How To Get Away With Murder" may be over for the season, but Shonda Rhimes isn't about to give up her claim on your Thursday nights. The producer's latest offering, "The Catch," joins ABC's all-Shondaland "TGIT" line-up.

Like other Shondaland shows, "Catch" -- which stars Mireille Enos ("The Killing") as a detective hunting down the one man who ever conned her, fiancé Peter Krause ("Parenthood") -- looks like it'll be a drama full of jaw-dropping plot twists and led by a strong heroine. So far, that formula has worked well for Rhimes, with a couple of notable exceptions.

Here's how we'd rank the Shondaland slate so far.
