A Booster Gold and Blue Beetle Movie Will Bring Laughs to the DC Extended Universe

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 07:30 PM PDT

Two more DC Comics characters are heading to the big screen, as the Tracking Board has revealed that fan favorites Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are teaming up for a movie from Warner Bros. Here's what you need to know: Who are Booster Gold and Blue Beetle? Booster Gold is a flashy, egotistical and sometimes careless superhero from the future who uses tech from his time to his advantage in the present, partly to fight crime and partly to be famous. He also has a robot sidekick named Skeets and often partners with Blue Beetle, a highly intelligent non-super-powered hero who also uses advanced gadgets to battle bad guys. They've both been members of some incarnation of the Justice League.   So will they be a part of the DC Extended Universe and join up for the...

Comics on Film: Hey, Marvel! It's Time to Bring Back the Red Skull

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Now that Marvel Studios is poised to enter Phase Three of its cinematic universe this coming May with Captain America: Civil War, there's a sizable track record of films to look back at. We've come a long way from the initial release of Iron Man in May of 2008 to the release of Ant-Man this past July. For the majority of the films they've released, Marvel Studios has proven to be a pretty solid creator of blockbusters, generating sizable box office dollars and generally positive critical reactions. Still, though, there is an area where Marvel movies can improve: the villains they choose to face off against their heroes. We've talked about this apparent issue before in this very column, but we're not the only ones to mention it...

Why 'King Kong vs Godzilla' May Have Just Killed 'Pacific Rim 2' (Update: Guillermo del Toro Responds)

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Update 9/18/15: Hop to the bottom of this post for Guillermo del Toro's response to the news.   Today the Hollywood Reporter ran a piece called "Hollywood Gorilla Warfare" exploring the shifting relationship between three of the biggest players in Hollywood - Warner Bros., Universal and Legendary Pictures - and the future of two of cinema's biggest monsters, King Kong and Godzilla. It's mainly a lot of inside baseball, but since it does effect Kong, Godzilla and, surprisingly, the fate of Pacific Rim 2, we wanted to break it down.   First, who is Thomas Tull? Thomas Tull is the CEO of Legendary Pictures, the company that has had a hand in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, 300, Watchmen, Clash of the Titans...

Reel TV: 'Taken' Prequel Will Show How He Got That Particular Set of Skills

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 03:00 PM PDT

Liam Neeson became an action star when Taken (above) debuted in 2009, making his character, retired CIA agent Bryan Mills, an iconic figure with "a particular set of skills." The three movies in the series have made more than $900 million at the box office worldwide. Now a younger version of Mills, sans wife and children, will show how he gained those skills, as NBC has ordered a prequel series for television. One would think the answer was pretty simple: He got training, acquired skills, end of story. But NBC believes there's much more story to tell here, because they've made a straight-to-series order for the prequel, which means it's skipping the whole pilot process entirely. The series will take place in the modern day and Neeson is...

What You Need to Know About 'Transformers 5' and Its Animated Spinoff

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 01:30 PM PDT

Incredible as it may sound, the four installments in the Transformers movie series have earned more than $3.7 billion at the box office worldwide. Last year's Transformers: Age of Extinction may have made "only" $254 million in the U.S., but its earnings in the rest of the world exceeded $858 million, so there's no doubt that a fifth installment will be on its way from Paramount Pictures as soon as possible. In Hollywood, however, there is no such thing as "too much money," so Paramount decided earlier this year to form a so-called "writers' room" to dream up new sequels and spinoffs for the Transformers cinematic universe. The idea of a "writers' room" originated in the television industry, where producers hire a group of...

Movie News: Jason Statham Heads to TV; Watch New 'The Last Witch Hunter' and 'Point Break' Trailers

Posted: 18 Sep 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Viva La Madness: We heard back in June that Jason Statham (above in Safe) would star in Viva La Madness, based on a book by J.J. Connolly, who wrote it as a followup to his novel Layer Cake, which itself served as the basis for a 2004 film starring Daniel Craig. Now it's been decided to adapt the book as a TV show rather than a movie, with plans to make at least 10 one-hour episodes. It will be the first television series for Statham, who will play a drug dealer who managed to retire early, but finds himself 'itching' to get back in the business. [Digital Spy]   The Last Witch Hunter Trailer: Vin Diesel stars in a new trailer for The Last Witch Hunter, which features a plethora of action as the titular character does battle againt history's most...
