Hear Dinos Speak in 'The Good Dinosaur' International Trailer

Posted:

the good dinosaurA new international trailer for Pixar's latest, "The Good Dinosaur," gives viewers their first glimpse of some new characters -- and a first listen to them speak, too.

The trailer follows a young apatosaurus named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa), who's suddenly separated from his father, Poppa (Jeffrey Wright), thanks to some rushing rapids. Alone and frightened, Arlo must face a host of obstacles as he searches for his family, and it's on this quest that he meets Spot (Jack Bright), a young human who's also on his own.

The unlikely twosome team up -- Spot seems a lot more brave than Arlo -- and encounter lots more dinosaurs (remember, the crux of the flick is that the giant asteroid that caused the dinos' extinction never hit Earth), including a trio of tyrannosaurus rexes led by Sam Elliott. Spot (who doesn't appear to know how to talk, at least from what we've seen so far) helps Arlo come out of his shell, as we see him teach the dino how to howl at the moon, while also listening as the tearful tot talks about missing his family.

It's hard to get a good sense of narrative cohesion from what little of the flick we've seen so far (it seems very similar to "Ice Age," just set a few million years earlier and swapping in dinosaurs for mammoths), but the animation looks great (that beautiful firefly scene from the first teaser is repeated here) and the voice cast is pretty solid, too. It's probably safe to say that "The Good Dinosaur" will be a crowd-pleasing, family-friendly flick -- and with the Pixar name behind it, hopefully a critical favorite, too.

"The Good Dinosaur" is due in theaters on November 25.

See Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc's Emmys 'Friends' Reunion

Posted:

67th Primetime Emmy Awards - InsiderNo awards show would be complete without onetime castmates reuniting on the red carpet, and last night at the Emmys, two former "Friends" got together.

Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc staged a mini "Friends" reunion during the pre-show telecast Sunday, as the comedy nominees (Kudrow for her leading role on "The Comeback," LeBlanc for his leading role on "Episodes") bumped into each other while doing interviews. As LeBlanc was chatting with "Entertainment Tonight," he spotted Kudrow walking the red carpet, and beckoned her over to say hello.

The pair adorably complimented each other's ensembles (LeBlanc protectively tried to button a button over Kudrow's cleavage) and congratulated one another on their nominations, gleefully sharing in the other's good fortune as only longtime pals can do. And the twosome revealed to "ET" that LeBlanc was actually the one to tell Kudrow she was up for an Emmy, after texting her his excitement when the nominations were revealed.

It's a sweet moment, and one we're glad we got to witness. Check it out for yourself below.

After Winning at the Emmys, Frances McDormand Is on EGOT Watch

Posted:

67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Press RoomMove over, Taylor Swift -- there's a new contender for an EGOT in town.

Last night, actress Frances McDormand snagged her first Emmy award, for lead actress in a limited series in HBO's "Olive Kitteridge." Her only previous Emmy nomination came in 1997, for her supporting role in the miniseries "Hidden in America."

With that win, McDormand joined an ever-growing list of entertainers who have the chance the snag the illustrious title of EGOT (someone who's won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony). In addition to that shiny new Emmy, McDormand already has an Oscar on her shelf (for 1996's "Fargo"), as well as a Tony (for 2011's "Good People").

That means that McDormand is only a Grammy win away from EGOT status, and as HitFix notes, she's in good company: Helen Mirren, Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Vanessa Redgrave, and Geoffrey Rush also need that "G" to join the EGOT club. Here's hoping one (or all) of them makes it in soon.

11 TV Shows Based On Movies You (Probably) Forgot About

Posted:

The movie-turned-TV adaptation isn't exactly a new Hollywood concept, but you can expect at least 5 of 'em to grace your small screen in the 2015-2016 seasons and way more to premiere over the next few years. ("Taken" prequel, anyone?).

We don't know the fate of shows like "Minority Report" and "Limitless" yet, but we do know how it turned out for the many adapted experiments of the past. Hey, they can't all be "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Friday Night Lights." Here are 11 short-lived TV shows based on films you may have totally forgot existed.

Emmys Tribute Angers Viewers for Spoiling TV Show Endings

Posted:

67th Primetime Emmy Awards - ShowSpoiler alert: The Internet is outraged again! Last night, the 2015 Emmy Awards aired a tribute to TV series that ended this year, including brief clips from "Mad Men," "Boardwalk Empire," and "Sons of Anarchy," among others. Right on cue, viewers cried TMI at the spoiler footage.

Even Ellen DeGeneres got in on the act, joining the many famous and not famous names to lash out:
To be fair, there were also tribute defenders who argued that it's not a "spoiler" once the series has already aired. As they noted, most of the TV shows in the clips have been over for months now, and you have to expect a show honoring TV series to show clips from those series.

Where do you stand on it? Did the Emmys make a boo boo for spoiling series that many viewers had yet to watch or was the burden on the audience to prepare for footage from shows they may not have seen?

'Game of Thrones' Breaks Record With 12 Wins at 2015 Emmys

Posted:

67th Primetime Emmy Awards - Trophy TableWhen you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. "Game of Thrones" won the 2015 Emmy Awards. Everything else died. (Sorry you got Ned Stark-ed, "Mad Men.")

"Game of Thrones" Season 5 ruled the pack last night, picking up 12 Emmys, which is the record for a series in one year. HBO bragged about the win in a media release, which also noted that it won 43 Primetime Emmys in total, the most of any network for the 14th year in a row. (Not that they're counting.)

GoT was kind of a surprise win for Outstanding Drama Series, considering it was up against the end of "Mad Men," and marked the second Emmy win for Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister). Even though GoT broke records with its 12 awards, it was actually nominated for 24 Emmys.

Here are the 12 Emmys GoT picked up:

Outstanding Drama Series; Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Peter Dinklage); Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (David Nutter); Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series (David Benioff and D.B. Weiss); Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary or Fantasy Program (One Hour or More); Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series; Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing for a Drama Series; Outstanding Makeup for a Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic); Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series; Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour); Outstanding Special Visual Effects; and Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Drama Series, Limited Series or Movie.

Watch the GoT cast and crew's acceptance speech for Outstanding Drama Series, presented by Tracy Morgan:

'Once Upon a Time' Season 5 Will Showcase LGBT Relationship

Posted:

It may be too soon for Swan Queen shippers to rejoice, but at least the "Once Upon a Time" showrunners have promised some kind of LGBT relationship in Season 5. The new season starts this Sunday, September 27, and after revealing Mulan (Jamie Chung) would be returning, Entertainment Weekly asked The Powers That Be if Season 5 would delve into Mulan's feelings for Sleeping Beauty (Sarah Bolger). Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz kept things vague when answering, teasing some potential new romances ahead.

"We know that community have been big supporters of the show and we would love to be able to tell a love story that reflects that," Kitsis said. Horowitz added to EW, "We want the show to reflect the world as it is now. Whether that's going to be with any particular character, we're not going to say." They emphasized that it's something that they will do this year, in Season 5, it's not just a theoretical idea.

There's no guarantee that the story will involve Mulan, who has feelings for her friend Aurora/Sleeping Beauty, and it's known that there's a strong fandom out there that wants to see Regina (Lana Parrilla) and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) together, as #SwanQueen. So ... maybe?

Lana Parrilla talked to After Ellen about the SwanQueen shippers, sharing her thoughts on why fans want Emma and Regina together:

I think they're two very strong, powerful, intelligent, attractive women. [laughs] Sorry, I'm biased. You've got a brunette with brown eyes-dark, sultry-and then you have this blonde, blue-eyed, very-Emma has a different quality from Regina. She's definitely more athletic, more active, stronger physically in a different way than Regina would be. And Regina has a different internal power and that's also very attractive, and a witch, and a humor, and a sassiness that we all love about her. She can be very snarky. And there are a lot of qualities that make these two characters connect and I can see why people would want them to be together. There's also been tension between them throughout the years and they're fighting and at each other's throats, but not ever really physically hurting one another, and so there's that tension that I think that can be perceived as very sexual by a lot of our audience, especially our SwanQueens."

Do you have any theories about the LGBT storyline coming in Season 5? What would you like to see happen?

'General Hospital' Star Criticizes Viola Davis' Emmys Speech, Gets Dragged

Posted:

Disney ABC Television Group's Remember when we were all taught "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?" Funny how so many of us forget that the second we get near Twitter. Last night, Viola Davis won a historic Emmy as the first African-American woman to win Best Lead Actress in a Drama. Her speech was powerful and fitting for the moment. However, Nancy Lee Grahn of "General Hospital" found fault, tweeted about it, and has been the Lance Armstrong of backpedaling ever since.

Here's her initial tweet: She would soon regret going there, as evidenced by her subsequent tweets and the messages sent to her, which got her name trending: Ouch. As of Monday morning, her name was still trending. As the star of a soap opera she must be used to drama, but she probably wouldn't script this storyline for herself, in hindsight.

Watch Ben Foster's Egomaniacal Lance Armstrong in 'The Program' Trailer

Posted:

Did the real Lance Armstrong ever say "I'm Lance Armstrong and I will not be brought down"? Or "I have the money and the power to destroy you"? He may as well just twirl a mustache and cackle.

The fallen racing hero certainly comes off as arrogant in a new trailer for "The Program," which features the amazing Ben Foster in the lead role. The movie, directed by Stephen Frears ("High Fidelity," "The Queen"), stars Chris O'Dowd as Irish sports journalist David Walsh, who investigated the too-good-to-be-true story of Lance recovering from cancer only to become superman. Sadly, we now know it was too good to be true and Lance was using performance enhancing drugs, aka he was on "the program," along with other cyclists.

"Lance Armstrong, handsome young inspirer of millions cannot possibly be a cheat," Walsh says at one point. "He's clearly doping and nobody else can see it." Cue trailer shots of Lance privately doping, but repeating in public, "I am the most tested athlete on the face of the planet. ... I have never tested positive for performing enhancing drugs."

The movie is based on Walsh's book "Seven Deadly Sins" and co-stars Dustin Hoffman, Lee Pace and Jesse Plemons ("Breaking Bad"). "The Program" showed at the Toronto Film Festival and now we just have to wait to see when it makes its way from limited release to the rest of us.

Watch the trailer.

'Ghostbusters' Ends Filming, Paul Feig Celebrates With Cute Photo

Posted:

That's it! It is now too late to call the new "Ghostbusters" because they wrapped the movie. If any ghosts show up in your house, just deal with them on your own. Director Paul Feig and his all-star cast -- including Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and token hot male Chris Hemsworth -- have been filming in Boston since June. Feig just announced the end of filming, right after revealing the latest cameo from an OG Ghostbuster.

It was already revealed that Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray were shooting cameos for the reboot, and Ernie Hudson also joined the group. Here's a tweet from Feig on that, plus a cute pic to mark the end of filming:
Congrats! "Ghostbusters" will be released July 15, 2016.

'Seven': 20 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About David Fincher's Classic

Posted:

Two decades later, we're still totally creeped out by "Seven."

The seven-deadly-sins-inspired serial killer thriller, which opened 20 years ago this week (on September 22, 1995), helped put director David Fincher on the map and marked a career milestone for stars Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Spacey. What's more, from its jittery opening credits to its grim shocker of an ending, "Seven" has become a template for how to make a dark, suspenseful crime drama.

Despite its many imitators, however, "Seven" maintains its secrets, from who almost starred in it to how it accomplished its unsettling effects to the softened ending that was almost tacked on. Here are some of those secrets. (Warning: Spoilers follow, though, c'mon, the movie's 20 years old.)
1. "Seven" screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker has a cameo. He's the corpse seen at the beginning of the movie.

2. Walker wrote the screenplay, his first, while living in New York City and working as a retail clerk at Tower Records. He has credited those dismal years with influencing the movie's bleak setting and tone.

3. Having moved to Los Angeles to become a screenwriter in earnest, Walker cold-called David Koepp, then best known as the screenwriter of "Bad Influence" and "Death Becomes Her." (Later, he'd be the blockbuster scribe of the first two "Jurassic Park" movies and "War of the Worlds.") Koepp liked the "Seven" script and helped Walker sell it to New Line Cinema. But the studio didn't like the head-in-a-box ending, a sequence that would be a point of contention throughout the production.

4. Fincher was then a music video director who'd recently made his feature debut with "Alien 3," and he found the process so miserable that he claimed he'd rather contract colon cancer than direct another film. But then he received Walker's screenplay and loved it. He didn't know that New Line had mistakenly sent him the original draft, the one with the severed-head ending.

5. Morgan Freeman was not the first choice to play William Somerset, the world-weary older detective. Walker had envisioned William Hurt as the character, whom he'd named after his favorite author, W. Somerset Maugham. The producers wanted Al Pacino, but he was committed to the film "City Hall."
6. Similarly, Brad Pitt was not the first choice to play Somerset's hot-tempered partner, David Mills. But Denzel Washington and Sylvester Stallone both turned down the role.

7. As serial killer John Doe, Kevin Spacey goes unmentioned in the opening credits. The actor's sudden appearance -- almost two-thirds into the film, not counting the mid-point chase -- came as a surprise to most viewers, as critics were generally good enough to keep that spoiler out of their reviews.

8. "Seven" was shot in Los Angeles, but to make the film's unnamed city look as gloomy as possible, the filmmakers generated a constant stream of fake rain.

9. Freeman called the set a "dark and unhealthy" place, and claimed Fincher developed a cough from the constant spray of water and mineral oil used to create the dank atmosphere.

10. Also adding to the gloom was the unusual way the film negative was processed, called bleach bypass. It involved leaving the silver in the film stock during development, creating a darker, grainier print.
11. Like Fincher, graphic designer Kyle Cooper was working on just his second film, after "Dead Presidents." His credits for that were based on tabletop shots of paper money on fire. Seeing the word "God" burn up on a bill gave Cooper the idea of using the pages of John Doe's notebooks to generate the opening credits for "Seven" (pictured).

12. Once he had the footage on film, Cooper scratched the negative with fish hooks and razor blades. The disturbing result became one of the most influential opening-credit sequences in modern film history, making Cooper the most sought-after opening credit designer since Saul Bass.

13. "Seven" is also one of the few films where the end credits crawl down instead of up.

14. Pitt and on-screen wife Gwyneth Paltrow fell in love for real during the shoot in early 1995.

15. Years later, Pitt claimed he had it written into his "Seven" contract that New Line keep in the final cut the head-in-a-box climax and Mills' vengeful shooting of John Doe. Audience testing, however, made New Line squeamish about the finale. The studio still thought the decapitation of Mills' pregnant wife too disturbing (couldn't it just be the head of Mills' dog, studio executives asked) and thought the character would be more heroic and likable if he refrained from shooting Doe. With the support of Pitt and Freeman, Fincher successfully argued in favor of the severed head and the shooting, but he mitigated the ending anyway. Initially, "Seven" was to end abruptly once Mills kills Doe. Instead, Fincher added the scene of the shocked Mills being taken away by his fellow cops, as well as Freeman's final, partially reassuring voiceover.
16. John Doe's books -- his handwritten journals documenting his street-level perceptions of humanity -- were handwritten. They took two months to finish writing, and cost a rumored $15,000

17. Ever wonder why Mills wears a cast for the back half of the film? While filming the scene where he chases John Doe in the rain, Pitt fell and his arm went through a car windshield, requiring surgery. They worked the accident into the script.

18. Brad Pitt reportedly earned $7 million for the film.

19. "Seven" cost a reported $33 million to make. It earned $100 million in North America, where it topped the box office chart for four straight weeks. Overseas, it earned an additional $227 million.

20. Three months after its initial release, New Line put "Seven" back into theaters in New York and Los Angeles at Christmastime in hopes of earning Oscar nominations for the filmmakers and stars. But the film's only Academy Award nomination came for Richard Francis-Bruce's editing.

Emmys 2015: The 13 Most Memorable Moments

Posted:

There were so many random, inexplicable things going on during Sunday night's Emmys. Why was Bradley Whitford wearing a fedora? Why was Amy Poehler wearing a hoodie that looked like Pennsatucky's from "Orange Is the New Black"? Did the HBO Now username and password that host Andy Samberg revealed to an audience of millions actually work? (Actually, yes, but only briefly.) Why was the orchestra playing the music from the movie "Ghostbusters"? (Was it because Ray Parker Jr. was in the house band?) Why was everyone wearing green ribbons? (Because climate change was the political mcause du jour.) And what happened during Mel Brooks' choppily edited presentation? Did he swear or were producers furiously trimming the 89-year-old legend's words in order to keep the show under three hours?

No doubt we'll learn the answers to these burning questions in time. Meanwhile, we'll be talking about these 13 moments from the 67th Emmys for a while, maybe even for ages yet to come, but almost certainly long after we learn the mysteries behind Whitford and Poehler's head coverings.

Watch Viola Davis' Powerful Emmys 2015 Speech After Historic Win

Posted:

67th Primetime Emmy Awards - Show"You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there."

Viola Davis spoke truth in her powerful 2015 Emmy Awards acceptance speech for Outstanding Actress in a Drama. She won for her role as Professor Annalise Keating in "How to Get Away With Murder," marking her first Emmy win (also her first nomination) and the first win for an African-American woman in the lead drama actress category. Viola and fellow nominee Taraji P. Henson of "Empire" were the first African-Americans to be nominated in that category in the same year.

In accepting her award, Viola didn't read from a script, but her speech seemed prepared for the historic moment:

'In my mind I see a line, and over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. But I can't seem to get there nohow. I can't seem to get over that line.' That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800s. And let me tell you something, the only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity..."

She closed with shout-outs to her peers, including producer Shonda Rhimes and actresses Taraji, Kerry Washington, and Halle Berry. "Thank you for taking us over that line."

Watch the full speech:

Beautiful. Congrats, Viola! Here's the full list of winners.

Uzo Aduba Joins Ed Asner With Drama and Comedy Emmys for Same Character

Posted:

Uzo Adubo: I Love You Most Because You Let Me Be Me

Things you never thought you'd hear: Uzo Aduba is the new Ed Asner! It's true. During the 2015 Emmy Awards, the "Orange Is the New Black" star joined Asner as the only other person to win an Emmy for the same role in two genres.

Uzo plays Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren in the Netflix series OITNB, which was previously in the comedy category. She won the Emmy for Oustanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014. This year, for the same role, she won the Oustanding Supporting Actress in a Drama award, slaying two competitors from "Game of Thrones," one from "Mad Men," one from "Downton Abbey," and another from "The Good Wife."

Ed Asner won multi-genre Emmys for playing the character Lou Grant in the comedy "Mary Tyler Moore" and he drama "Lou Grant." Earlier in the night, Allison Janney also became the new Ed Asner (there are suddenly so many!) when she tied Asner and Mary Tyler Moore with seven wins.
2014 Carousel Of Hope Ball - Arrivals
The actor himself is apparently happy for the new honorees, since he retweeted several comments about their connection on Emmys night:

Congrats to Uzo (and Allison) on joining Ed's special little Emmys circle! Dare we suggest a collaboration in 2016?
