The Real Whitey Bulger Disses Johnny Depp in 'Black Mass'

Posted:

Special Screening of James "Whitey" Bulger is a notorious South Boston mobster, but he sounds like a high-maintenance diva when it comes to his own portrayal in "Black Mass." You'd think having Johnny Depp play you in a movie would be flattering, especially when you're a criminal who doesn't really deserve to be embodied by an A-list heartthrob.

Bulger, 86, didn't communicate with Depp, and apparently he has no plans to see the film, even if they show it in his Florida prison. But he's still bashing "Black Mass" and its star, via his defense lawyer, with a bizarre amount of self-righteous indignation. And even though Johnny Depp said he aimed to portray White Bulger "as a human being" with "a kind heart" in addition to a cold one, he's not going to get any thank you cards from the real-life subject.

Bulger's defense attorney spoke for the gangster, telling People:

Johnny Depp might as well have been playing the Mad Hatter all over again as far as James Bulger is concerned. Hollywood greed is behind the rush to portray my client, and the movie missed the real scourge created in my client's case, the real menace to Boston during that time and in other mob cases around the country - the federal government's complicity in each and every one of those murders with the top echelon informant program."

Yes, poor Whitey Bulger was just a victim and greedy Hollywood and government officials are the real villains. (Maybe Whitey was just hoping that Leonardo DiCaprio would play him.)

"Black Mass" opens today, September 18.

'Project Runway' Designer Quits to Be With Dying Dog, Fans Tweet Support

Posted:

Sometimes you can't "make it work" and you can't "carry on" and even "Project Runway's" Tim Gunn understands why.

Reality TV show quitters are usually dragged by fans, but "Project Runway" Season 14 viewers showed their softer sides last night during Episode 7 when designer Jake Wall decided to leave. It was noticed that he was looking down, and apparently it wasn't just because he almost went home the week before. As he explained to Tim Gunn, he got a call that his dog was sick and wasn't going to make it.

Jake had apparently already lost his parents and said "this dog has been my rock when I needed one." He cried, saying maybe not everyone would understand, but he felt he had to go home and be there for his dog or he'd regret it. Tim, an animal lover himself, was compassionate and said he understood. "Project Runway" is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but the kind of "unconditional love" you get from a family member is worth more than the potential money or career boost.

It was a heartbreaking (but also heartwarming) moment, and PR fans took to Twitter to share their sympathies:

And here's shot of the sweet little guy from Jake:
Pets aren't like family, they are family. Jake made the right call, and hopefully he has no regrets.

Dakota Johnson Shares 'Fifty Shades Darker' Update, Gets Sexy New Props

Posted:

Dakota Johnson is now trying to promote "Black Mass" with Johnny Depp, but while on the media circuit, she's fielding questions about the "Fifty Shades of Grey" series. The second movie, "Fifty Shades Darker" -- with a script by author E.L. James's husband Niall Leonard -- is scheduled for release February 10, 2017. The third movie, "Fifty Shades Freed," is scheduled for February 9, 2018.

Dakota was just on "Ellen," and it was clear Ellen DeGeneres really just wanted to focus the conversation on "Fifty Shades." She asked if Dakota was in a relationship (she's not, she's single) and Dakota said guys might be "scared" of her after playing Anastasia Steele. But some guys are so not scared that share a little TMI. As Dakota told Ellen:

Well, sometimes, people just say things that are a little bit awkward for me. Like, I was in a cab recently, and the driver was like, 'You know, my wife and I, we saw your film.... We really liked it.' I was like 'Thank you very much.' He was like, 'I thought there could be more sex.'"

She said she wanted to roll out of the car while it was driving.

In terms of the second movie, Dakota said they haven't even started filming it yet. "We start sometime in the new year." To get her prepared, Ellen gave her a few gifts: a blue flogger, a pair of blue handcuffs, a blue whip, and even a blue blanket with "Ellen's got me covered" written on it, for when she's naked on set.
Classic! Dakota thanked her for the "beautiful" gifts. They are pretty sparkly. Jamie Dornan's Christian Grey may appreciate them in the next movies (that cab driver may like them too).

Here's part of Dakota's talk with Ellen:

Elizabeth Olsen Teases 'Captain America: Civil War,' But Wants Answers on Ending

Posted:

Apparently Elizabeth Olsen has already said too much about "Captain America: Civil War." She'll return as new full-fledged Avenger Scarlet Witch in Marvel's 2016 movie, and while at the Toronto Film Festival to promote "I Saw the Light," she talked to Collider about the latest "Avengers" reunion and more "War" action to come.

Olsen described "Civil War," in general terms, and confessed she had no idea 1) how it will end, and 2) whether her character will be in "Avengers: Infinity War" Part 1 or Part 2. The two "Infinity War" movies -- directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who also did "Civil War" and "Winter Soldier" -- are due to be released in 2018 and 2019. Olsen told Collider she has a team of people who would like to know one way or the other whether she's going to be in those films, so ... hint, hint, Marvel.

But speaking just of "Civil War," she teased a "fun" movie ahead, if a dark one, and tried to avoid revealing any spoilers:

I was only there for five weeks of it, but we were all super stoked about it. ... Even though the Ultron robots are so intensely human because of its mind, we're actually dealing with humans this time, through and through. And there's nothing scarier than something that's like you being dangerous. So I think it's darker and it's fun. It's really fun - it was so hard to shoot, but I think it's gonna be a really interesting film. I'm excited to see how they're gonna end it. I wanna see what the ending shots look like because I wanna know what the ellipses is at the end of the film, you know?"

Yes, we know. Marvel excels at endings - before the credits, during the credits, after the credits. They know how to get us to sit through the names of ten thousand strangers for a few seconds of potential spoilers or just non-spoilery awesomeness.

"Captain America: Civil War" is scheduled for release on May 6, 2016. Here's Elizabeth talking to Collider about her experience:

'Grey's Anatomy' Season 12 Trailer Shows Life After McDreamy ... Is Funny?!

Posted:

Holy tone change, Batman. Without ever mentioning the words "Derek" or "McDreamy," ABC's official trailer for "Grey's Anatomy" Season 12 seems very tied to his memory -- as in, please forget that he just died and it was devastating because now we're ready to have some FUN! The mood of the brief (why just 20 seconds?) trailer is very upbeat, so upbeat you might think they were teasing a sitcom.

Yeah, we see Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) sitting in bed, thinking deep thoughts about how "everything has changed," but we also see high fives in the hospital, goofy shenanigans with Meredith's new roommates, and a slapstick-like punch to the face. The music is lively and the overall feel is positive and happy.

It's a nice change of pace -- for the characters and the audience -- to go from such a dark ending in Season 11 to lighthearted fun, but it's almost a shock to the system to see something so bright. It's going to take our eyes a minute to adjust to the light, but we'll get there, and hopefully this is the start of a refreshing reboot as opposed to a WTF are you doing to us now, Shonda?

Here's the trailer:

Here are more details on the Season 12 premiere, which airs this coming Thursday, September 24.

'The Walking Dead' Dethroned as Most Tweeted About Fall TV Show

Posted:

Nobody puts Daryl Dixon in the corner! Except maybe "Grey's Anatomy" ... and "Supernatural." Sorry, dude.

Twitter just revealed the latest stats on what fans are tweeting about when it comes to the Fall 2015 TV season. They noted that 90 percent of the fall premiere conversations out there are about returning shows, rather than new shows. They also revealed that the 21 million tweets (so far) about fall premieres is a 34 percent jump from the amount this time last year.

Speaking of last year, "The Walking Dead" was the 2014 champ, but it was dethroned in 2015, thanks possibly to another dead character: Derek Shepherd.

"Grey's" topped the 2015 list, even though it was sixth last year, followed by "Supernatural," which remains the No. 2 bridesmaid it was last year as well. But "The Walking Dead" was pushed down to No. 3, which maybe isn't that big a surprise since last year there were major questions like "How will they get out of Terminus?" and "Where's Beth?" and this season there are still questions but not as many pressing cliffhangers.

In terms of new shows, "American Horror Story: Hotel" topped the list, followed by "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," "Scream Queens," "Heroes Reborn" and "Supergirl." Check out Twitter's cool infographic below, with all the numbers:

Any big surprises on the list, from your perspective?

NBC Is Making a 'Taken' Prequel Series

Posted:

The "Taken" series became famous for an oft-spouted line from Liam Neeson's character, Bryan Mills, about his "particular set of skills" that make him a ruthless ass-kicking machine, and now, a new series from NBC will explore just how he acquired those skills.

Deadline reports that the network is developing a series centered around Bryan Mills as a young man -- no wife and daughter yet -- and how he eventually obtains his thuggish abilities. It's a direct homage to the line Neeson uttered in 2008's "Taken," when he tells one of the men suspected of having kidnapped his daughter, "What I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career; Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you."

Without Neeson at the helm to deliver said line (according to Variety, he isn't involved with the show in any capacity at this time), it's hard to imagine another actor picking up his slack, but it's an interesting premise nonetheless. The prequel will be a reboot of sorts, since it will take place in the modern day, not decades in the past to line up with Neeson's age in the flicks.

NBC is reportedly so hot on the property that they've ordered it straight to series, based on a pitch from original "Taken" writer-producer Luc Besson, without a writer or showrunner attached yet. Besson will produce the series.

Stay tuned to see who they snag to star. And keep your fingers crossed for a Neeson cameo in some shape or form.

Lupita Nyong'o Talks 'Star Wars' in Second Vogue Cover Story

Posted:

lupita nyong'o, star wars, the force awakens, vogueOscar winner Lupita Nyong'o has graced her second cover of Vogue magazine, and in the midst of looking gorgeous in couture gowns, the actress also spilled some scoop about what it was like filming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Nyong'o chatted with the mag in promotion of a full slate of upcoming projects, including Disney's live-action "The Jungle Book," but said that her experience shooting "Star Wars" -- in the motion-capture role of the pirate Maz Kanata -- was unlike anything else she's experienced. Calling the process "really bizarre and lots of fun," the actress told Vogue that it was a uniquely creative endeavor.

"I really enjoyed the fact that you're not governed by your physical presence in that kind of work," Nyong'o said. "You can be a dragon. You can be anything."

As for director J.J. Abrams, he knew he wanted someone with Nyong'o's presence to fill the role.

"We needed a powerful actress to play a powerful character," Abrams told Vogue. "Lupita was someone I'd known a little and was enormously fond of. More important, her performance in '12 Years a Slave' blew my mind, and I was vaguely desperate to work with her."

Sounds like the perfect match. Nyong'o also revealed herself to be a bit of a "Star Wars" geek, revealing in a separate video interview that her favorite flick from the series is "The Empire Strikes Back." In a choice of Luke Skywalker vs. Han Solo and C-3PO vs. R2-D2, she'd choose both latter options; she's also pretty adept at wielding a (toy) lightsaber.

Check out Lupita's full fabulous cover below. We can't wait to see her work her "Star Wars" magic when "The Force Awakens" opens on December 18.

Lady Gaga Rules in New 'American Horror Story: Hotel' Teaser

Posted:

lady gaga, american horror story, AHS: hotel, hotel, american horror story: hotelIn case you haven't heard, Lady Gaga is starring in the next installment of "American Horror Story," and FX is going all-in on its promo of the program with Gaga at the center.

The latest teaser for the show's fifth season, "Hotel," features nothing but the singer, stalking the halls of the Hotel Cortez in a variety of fabulous costumes that would look at home in one of her music videos. And while creator Ryan Murphy has been insistent that Gaga won't be singing this season, this clip certainly has all the theatricality we'd expect from Mother Monster, with a booming soundtrack (thanks to the rockin' Rammstein's "Du Hast"), flashing lights, dramatic sashaying, and -- wait, seriously, what's up with those creepy kids?!

Yes, the terrifying little tykes who ran around in the last teaser are back again, this time seemingly doing Gaga's bidding. At first, the Countess reads them a story in a cozy little circle; suddenly, we're flashing down a few levels to a darkly-lit indoor pool, where a scantily-clad Gaga has them all on (glowing?) leashes. Nothing weird about that.

It's all a bit head-scratching -- and pretty fabulous, too, if we're being honest. "American Horror Story" isn't exactly known for its subtlety; if it wants to portray Gaga as the whip-cracking leader of a group of possessed children, who are we to judge? She seems pretty suited to the part.

Check out the madness for yourself below. "American Horror Story: Hotel" debuts on FX on October 7.

Megan Fox Joining 'New Girl' Season 5 While Zooey Deschanel Is on Maternity Leave

Posted:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tokyo PremiereThere's going to be another new girl joining "New Girl" next season, with Megan Fox set for a guest arc.

The "Transformers" star is serving as a temporary stand-in for titular star Zooey Deschanel, who is currently on maternity leave. But don't expect producers to try to pass Fox off as Jess 2.0.

According to TVLine, Fox will play Reagan, described by the site as "a gorgeous, straight-shooting pharmaceutical sales rep who comes to town on business and shakes things up in the loft when she rents out Jess' room while she is sequestered on jury duty." The jury duty storyline is meant to accommodate Deschanel's maternity leave; she pre-shot five episodes of season five before giving birth to her daughter in August, and Reagan's arrival coincides with Jess's absence during jury duty, which will begin in episode six.

"It's insane to me that such a gorgeous person can be so funny, but I guess we just all have to accept it," said executive producer Liz Meriwether in a statement. "I've been a fan of her comedic skills since 'This is 40,' and I'm so excited to have her on the show. We had Megan in mind when we wrote this part - she's the perfect person to come in and shake these guys up."

Like Meriwether noted, Fox isn't exactly a newbie when it comes to comedy, with a key role in Judd Apatow's 2012 flick. She also broke out earlier in her career with appearances on sitcoms "Two and a Half Men" and "What I Like About You," as well as a regular role on "Hope & Faith."

Fox isn't the only familiar face who'll appear during "New Girl"'s next season: John Cho is also slated for a guest appearance, as someone Jess meets when she reports for jury duty.

Season five of "New Girl" debuts sometime in January on Fox.

Best of Late Night TV: Kaley Cuoco's Pup Quiz and Terry Crews' Grunt-Off

Posted:

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
It's that time of the month again: where Jimmy Fallon lets his celebrity guest on "The Tonight Show" (in this case, Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) play with a bunch of puppy labradors. Nothing else matters. Only this.

In which Jimmy Kimmel introduces "Lullaby Ben" (a sleep machine), and says that Ben Carson comes off as a "guy who grabbed the wrong drink at Bill Cosby's house." Just leaving this here...

Trevor Noah visited Stephen Colbert on "The Late Show," and did his best impression of GOP candidates at the debates. It scary-good. Emphasis on scary.

As everyone knows, Terry Crews is super strong, so naturally he did a segment on "lifting and grunting" with James Cordon, in which they out-grunted each other.

Finally, Big Sean did a parody of "IDFWY," and it was basically adorable. Look at that smile!
