Marvel Studios Countdown: The New Marvel Civil War Is Netflix vs ABC

Posted: 21 Nov 2016 07:56 PM PST

The biggest Marvel news of the past week concerned The Inhumans, who we’ll formally see first as a television show, with a big screen IMAX pilot debut in lieu of a feature film. The film was removed from Marvel’s announced slate earlier this year, and for those who follow Agents of SHIELD, the change feels like a more organic evolution of threads that were started on that show. They’ve already been using “Inhumans” - people with altered DNA who receive powers when exposed to a substance called Terrigen mists - without touching the identifiable Inhumans royal family. That’s the group that includes long-time Marvel characters like Black Bolt, Medusa, Crystal, and Lockjaw (you can read our character guide here). It’s easy to imagine those...

New 'Smurfs: The Lost Village' Trailer Leaves the Live-Action World Behind

Posted: 21 Nov 2016 06:30 PM PST

The first two entries in Sony's big screen Smurfs franchise blended live-action and animation, bringing the lovable little blue fantasy folk into the chaotic light of the real world. Smurfs: The Lost Village, however, is keeping things strictly animated. It's also swapping out the hybrid version's cast. Gone are Katy Perry, Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Kenan Thompson, John Oliver, Alan Cumming and more. The new blue crew will consist of Jack McBrayer, Danny Pudi, Demi Lovato, Mandy Patinkin, Joe Manganiello and Rain Wilson as the villainous Gargamel. A new voice cast isn't the only major change that The Lost Village will have on its hands. It also looks like there's a whole other Smurfs tribe to discover, and it's one that appears to have a secret link to...

The First 'Cars 3' Teaser Trailer Is a Surprisingly Gritty Change of Pace

Posted: 21 Nov 2016 03:25 PM PST

Pixar's Cars franchise, which includes the two main features plus two spin-off Planes movies, has always taken place in an incredibly cartoon-y universe. Obviously that's the case considering it's filled with talking vehicles who live in a world that is clearly designed for humans and yet strangely has no humans in it, but it's worth pointing out because it looks like Cars 3 may be leaving that cartoon-y universe behind. Disney and Pixar still haven't revealed an official synopsis for the new film, but they have released a teaser trailer that looks noticeably different from the other Cars films. It's not just the aesthetics of the animation that are a departure (Pixar sequels always improve on the animation), it's the tone. It's a short clip, but...

Posted: 21 Nov 2016 03:00 PM PST

Christopher Robin: Marc Forster (World War Z, above) will direct Christopher Robin. The live-action fantasy adventure follows Robin, the boy in A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh books -- pictured above in Disney's most recent animated version -- as a grown-up businessman having troubles with his wife and daughter. The return of Pooh complicates everything. Alex Ross Perry (Queen of Earth) wrote the screenplay, which reportedly features "strong elements of magical realism." [THR]   Transformers: The Last Knight: Director Michael Bay says the first teaser for Transformers: The Last Knight will arrive in theaters on December 16, attached to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Emilia Clarke Joins Han Solo 'Star Wars' Movie

Posted: 21 Nov 2016 12:00 PM PST

Six years ago, Emilia Clarke burst into popular consciousness during the first season of HBO's Game of Thrones. Her character, Daenerys Targaryen, began as a naive and submissive young woman who soon emerged as a far stronger personality than might have been anticipated. Throughout the course of the series, Daenerys has overcome one setback after another, rising to become a powerful ruling force. In concert with her character, Clarke has risen from relative obscurity to immense popularity over the past few years. She has been quite selective about the movies in which she's appeared since the series hit it big, starting with supporting roles in Spike Island and Dom Hemingway before she landed a starring role as Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys (above left). The...
