Priyanka Chopra Previews Her Slo-Mo 'Baywatch' Run

Posted:

2016 Global Citizen FestivalPriyanka Chopra warned/promised that the 2017 "Baywatch" movie "has a lot of slo-mo coming." And she showed off her own slow-motion moves on "Late Night With Seth Meyers."

Priyanka told Seth that, when she was growing up in India, she and her family would run to the couch to watch "Baywatch." It was her mother's favorite TV show, and a huge deal. "You had to watch, it was the big American dream." She still loves the show -- despite Seth making fun of it. In her defense of the show, she argued, "Who has ever run better in slow motion than those guys?"

On that note, Priyanka showed off the slow-motion run she had practiced and refined. Watch it around the 1:17 mark -- love the little head turn!
She will actually be playing the villain in "Baywatch," in a role originally written for a man. She filmed last winter and spring, between shooting her "Quantico" series for ABC.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is one of the stars of the movie, and he announced her casting on Instagram:

"She's one of the biggest stars in the world. Insanely talented, relentlessly smokin' and extremely dangerous - perfect for #BAYWATCH. Welcome @PriyankaChopra to our bad ass and incredibly dysfunctional family. Cue RATED R slo-mo running on the beach."

He later updated with another post praising his co-star, which got a repost and response from Priyanka:

"Baywatch," directed by Seth Gordon, follows Dwayne Johnson's lifeguard Mitch and his new recruit (played by Zac Efron) as they uncover a criminal plot that threatens the bay. The action comedy co-stars Alexandra Daddario, Jon Bass, Kelly Rohrbach, Ilfenesh Hadera, and Hannibal Buress, and it's scheduled for release in theaters May 19th, 2017.

Why 'Doctor Strange' Could Be the Most Important Marvel Movie Yet

Posted:

Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange in Marvel's DOCTOR STRANGEWarning: Slight "Doctor Strange" spoilers ahead.

There's a moment in Marvel's kaleidoscopic comic book adventure "Doctor Strange," when the good Doctor (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), formerly filled with hubris and pride but significantly humbled by a devastating car crash and subsequent spiritual awakening in the far east, is warned of the dangers of messing with otherworldly magic. The severe, heavily robed figures tell him that if he dabbles in certain magical scenarios like, for instance, using the time-twisting Eye of Agamotto, he could create parallel universes, alternate dimensions, and the like. It's meant as something of a throwaway line, mostly to give the audience a heads-up that, yes, Doctor Strange is going to use the Eye of Agamotto and, yes, it will be very cool. But embedded within the exchange could be the key to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Even if you've never read a comic book in your life, you probably know that there are several different "universes" of comic book heroes. Recently, Marvel bent over backwards to annihilate these alternate universes in the convoluted Secret Wars storyline, which saw the various universes converge and heroes fighting to the death in a Doctor Doom-controlled "Battleworld." Oy. Anyway, for a long time there were the main Marvel stories and then the "Ultimate" universe, which has been borrowed from, liberally, for the film adaptations (Nick Fury was drawn to look almost exactly like Samuel L. Jackson in the Ultimate universe; in the mainstream Marvel universe he's an old white guy). There were also things like the "Noir" universe that Marvel played with for a spell (so many goggles), the "Marvel Zombies" universe created by "Walking Dead" mastermind Robert Kirkman, and the "1602" universe, which was overseen by certifiable genius Neil Gaiman and imagined the Marvel heroes in Elizabethan times.

My point is this: depending on the creative team behind the book and the timeline/universe that they're playing in, there could literally be dozens of incarnations of your favorite superhero, sometimes just depending on the adjective that comes before that comic book's title (i.e. "Astonishing X-Men," "Uncanny X-Men," etc.)

So far, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, things have been kept comparatively clean. The only dissonance has come from the times the characters have been brought to life outside of the company, like the recent, ultimately futile attempts at reviving the "Spider-Man" brand, and the endless "X-Men" sequels Fox produces. (Thankfully, next summer's "X-Men: Homecoming" returns the character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a brief, unforgettable appearance in this summer's "Captain America: Civil War.") There is, as far as we're concerned, one Marvel Cinematic Universe -- it was started by folks like Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper or John Slattery, depending on how old he was), Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and Captain America (Chris Evans) -- and has continued with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and, now, Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Marvel Studios has done an incredible job of keeping all of these characters and all of these films inside the framework of a single, relatively concise narrative. What's more, they've been able to catch you up to speed so that, even if you haven't seen "Avengers: Age of Ultron," you'd probably get the gist of "Ant-Man." It's sort of incredible. And while the Marvel Cinematic Universe has recently allowed for more tangential storytelling, like with the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films, there are repeated promises that it will all converge in one beautifully orchestrated superhero free-for-all (most likely "Avengers: Infinity War" or its direct sequel). But what if "Doctor Strange" just opened the door for something altogether, well, stranger?

There are some practical realities to first consider: no matter how much Robert Downey Jr. loves buying yachts, at some point he's going to get too old, too tired, or too expensive to keep portraying billionaire industrialist-turned-Avenger Iron Man. Similarly, other actors associated with the MCU have expressed their desire to do other projects or to just hang up their respective capes/rocket boots for a little while. These movies are a physically demanding slog for pretty much everyone involved. When I saw writer/director Joss Whedon on the set of "Avengers: Age of Ultron," it looked like he hadn't slept since the first movie came out. Eventually, these actors will need to be replaced, but Marvel Studios, in their infinite wisdom, might not want to wholly abandon the characters themselves.

And "Doctor Strange" might have given them the perfect "out."

Imagine a Marvel Studios opening with that exchange from "Doctor Strange" about all the alternate dimensions that he could potentially open up. And then imagine a smash cut to a new "Iron Man" movie, except this time Iron Man is an African-American teenage girl named Riri Williams. Or Thor is a woman. Or Gwen Stacey or Miles Morales is Spider-Man. All of these things happen in the comic books. Now they could happen onscreen, thanks to a some expositional dialogue in "Doctor Strange."

It's kind of genius, because this could allow for these alternate versions of your favorite character, while the original characters are still, presumably, in the main thread of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it wouldn't just facilitate new, alternate universe characters to enter the fold. It could also just give the regular actors some downtime. Chris Evans could take 10 years off to make "difficult" independent films and a bid for Oscar gold, and after he's feeling fully rejuvenated and refreshed, can return to the fold (maybe he'll give Bucky or Sam Wilson the shield for a while; both have been Captain America at different points in the comics). And where was Cap during those 10 years? In one of the alternate dimensions that Doctor Strange opened up in this movie.

The possibilities are limitless. Doctor Strange as the personal physician for Queen Elizabeth or a brain-craving zombie? Both are possible now. How probable they are remains to be seen; Marvel Studios likely wouldn't want to distance themselves too much from the core brand, although just imagine a "1602" movie by "The Witch" director Robert Eggers or South Korean filmmaker Chan Wook-Park taking a crack at a story set in the "Noir" universe. It's almost too much to fathom.

So in the next few years, if Marvel Studios announces some radical reinventions of its favorite characters, bold new casting choices, or just some left field weirdness, you can probably trace it back to this moment in "Doctor Strange.

"Remember: Doctor Strange is warned of what could happen and he does it anyway. Sure, the world is in jeopardy. But in saving Earth he may have substantially expanded the Universe. The Marvel Cinematic Universe, that is.

'Westworld' Shocker Ahead May Make You Rewatch Whole Series

Posted:

Prepare to have your tinfoil-covered black or white cowboy hat blown off by what's ahead on "Westworld" Season 1.

Fans have already covered the Internet with their theories about ... everything. Where Westworld and the staff are really located. Which humans might really be hosts. Which characters might be the same character in different timelines (you know that one). Whatever the heck is happening with co-founder Arnold, etc.A fan asked Entertainment Weekly for details on upcoming episodes of "Westworld" (the next is Episode 6, airing November 6) and here is the response:

Do you know anything about the upcoming episodes of Westworld? — Candice
Elsie comes very close to the truth behind those data leaks in Sunday's episode, but having also seen next week's outing, I will tell you first hand that there's info even more surprising on the horizon. Let's just say there's something so shocking that happens next week, it left my jaw on the floor — seriously, I'm going to need to rewatch the entire series.

Well, considering the "entire series" is only six episodes as of Sunday, it won't take too long. The way that's phrased makes it sound like "next week" means the November 13 Episode 7, called "Trompe L'Oeil." That episode's synopsis (see below) references Bernard considering his "next move." Does something major happen with him? Is it revealed that (as some fans have theorized) that Bernard is a bot? The next episode after that references his "mandate," then he and Dolores both "reconnect with their pasts." Hmmm.

HBO recently shared synopses for the upcoming episodes -- except for the Episode 10 season finale. We just have the episode title for that one: "The Bicameral Mind." Here are more details from HBO on what's ahead:

Episode #6: "The Adversary" (Sunday, November 6, 9 p.m. on HBO)

Maeve (Thandie Newton) charms Lutz (Leonardo Nam); Elsie (Shannon Woodward) uncovers possible sabotage; the Man in Black (Ed Harris) and Teddy (James Marsden) run afoul of a garrison. Written by Halley Gross & Jonathan Nolan; directed by Frederick E.O. Toye.

Episode #7: "Trompe L'Oeil" (November 13)

Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and William (Jimmi Simpson) journey into treacherous terrain; Maeve (Thandie Newton) delivers an ultimatum; Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) considers his next move. Written by Halley Gross & Jonathan Nolan; directed by Frederick E.O. Toye.

Episode #8: "Trace Decay" (November 20)

Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) struggles with a mandate; Maeve (Thandie Newton) looks to change her script; Teddy (James Marsden) is jarred by dark memories. Written by Charles Yu & Lisa Joy; directed by Stephen Williams.

Episode #9: "The Well-Tempered Clavier" (November 27)

Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) and Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) reconnect with their pasts; Maeve (Thandie Newton) makes a bold proposition to Hector (Rodrigo Santoro); Teddy (James Marsden) finds enlightenment, at a price. Written by Dan Dietz & Katherine Lingenfelter; directed by Michelle MacLaren.

Episode #10: "The Bicameral Mind" (December 4)

No description for the season finale yet, but it will probably be shocking ... and make us rewatch the whole series.

'Grey's Anatomy' Season 13 Has an Entire Episode Set on a Plane

Posted:

"Grey's Anatomy" is giving fans another episode with the word "flight" involved, which should already make you nervous. (Little Grey, we haven't forgotten you!)

According to TVLine, Season 13 "is about to go into production on an episode set entirely onboard a commercial airliner as a crisis unfolds mid-flight."

A fan had asked about the possibility of Sara Ramirez returning as Callie, so that's how she ended up in this next part:

"It's not clear which of the docs will be on the manifest when said emergency erupts, but given Callie and Arizona's shared, bi-coastal custody arrangement with Sofia, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to bring Ramirez back for a kickass standalone episode. Sadly, a source close to the actress tells me there are no current plans for her to return. Still, sounds like it'll be a cool, emotionally fraught episode, especially considering what went down four years ago."

What went down four years ago, in the Season 8 finale, was the episode called "Flight," following a plane crash in the woods, with the main characters fighting to stay alive. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) ended up being trapped and dying. Let's just hope we don't see anything like that again.

"Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC. The winter finale, which sounds pretty intense, airs November 17, and that will be it until the 2017 midseason premiere.

'Game of Thrones' Alum Cast as 'Justice League' Villain

Posted:

The King-Beyond-the-Wall will soon face-off against Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of DC's "Justice League."

Irish actor Ciaran Hinds -- who played Mance Rayder on "Game of Thrones," in just one of his 100 credits -- will play villain Steppenwolf in "Justice League." TheWrap got the scoop, adding that Hinds recently wrapped his role, which was filmed through motion capture (ala Josh Brolin's Thanos for Marvel.)Britain Bleed For This LFF PremiereTheWrap also quoted sources who said the villain's look will be upgraded from his first appearance, in a deleted scene from "Batman v Superman":It was revealed a few months ago that Steppenwolf would be the main villain and, at the time, producers said they were close to casting an actor for the shadowy horned antagonist. At the same time, Ben Affleck (Batman) talked to Mashable about his own character's struggle to form the Justice League:

"It's about trying to get a lot of disparate people who are used to being very powerful and very independent to try to work together, and it's about how hard that is. There are some characters that really hit it off with each other, some that really don't hit if off with each other and almost come to blows, and it's about trying to contain that."

"Wonder Woman" is the next time in the DC Extended Universe, and then "Justice League" arrives November 17, 2017.

The First 'Stranger Things' Season 2 Cast Photo Says It All

Posted:

Netflix just shared visual proof of the focus of "Stranger Things" Season 2.

The cast and crew just gathered for the first table read for the new season, which will stream in 2017. It was already revealed that Millie Bobby Brown's Eleven would be returning, but it was further confirmed by her inclusion in the table read, and in a new tweet from the El actress herself:

Yep, we're literally in the Upside Down already! Prepare to spend a lot of time there.

If you flip the photo (see Netflix/EW image below), you can better see that the table read includes, from left: Sadie Sink (new character Max), Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin), Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas), Finn Wolfhard (Mike), Noah Schnapp (Will), Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven), Charlie Heaton (Jonathan), Natalia Dyer (Nancy), Joe Keery (Steve), and Dacre Montgomery (Billy, Max's stepbrother).Season 2 will see the addition of a "tough and confident girl" named Max, who has a complicated history and a "hyper-confident and edgy older stepbrother" named Billy. Matt and Ross Duffer said Season 2 will be "darker" than Season 1 with "a bigger mythology behind what happened."

Matt further teased, via EW, "We hint at where we might go at the end of the season. Will was living in this Upside Down, this other dimension, for about a week, so the repercussions of that can't be good. [The] inter-dimensional rift is still very much open, so that also can't be good."

That's a lot of "can't be good" but it's already looking good to see the cast back at work (albeit without Winona Ryder or David Harbour... maybe they are just outside the frame?). We're ready for more Eggos, so bring 'em on!

'Walking Dead': Negan Has Daryl 'Butt Naked,' 'Eating Dog Food' in 'The Cell'

Posted:

Norman Reedus warns that things are about to get "pretty gross" for Daryl Dixon in "The Walking Dead" Season 7, Episode 3, "The Cell." This Sunday's November 6 episode will show Daryl at the Saviors's base, called the Sanctuary, and he's not going to have fun.

Entertainment Weekly shared some bad news for Mr. Dixon in its weekly Q&A:

Please offer me some hope about Daryl on The Walking Dead. — Raille
Would if I could. We'll finally get to see where Negan has taken Daryl during Sunday's episode. While he hasn't met the same fate as Glenn and Abraham, the road ahead is rough. For one, the new living conditions are not ideal, especially when you find out what Negan's been feeding him. "I'm butt naked ... eating dog food in the next episode our show," Norman Reedus reveals. "It was pretty gross." That's an understatement.

Some fans might not mind the idea of a naked Daryl, but this sounds as unsexy as it gets. He's being broken down like Negan's new pet dog. It's especially degrading considering we learned in Season 4 that Daryl is an outdoor cat, not a dog. You feed Pookie the Friskies, not the Alpo!

Dog food is not new to TWD. You may recall Carl Grimes finding some dog food in the Season 3 premiere, just before they got to the prison, when the group was super desperate. Rick wouldn't let Carl sink to eating dog food (and Daryl managed to kill an owl) but Season 7 is sinking our group to serious new depths, and dog food may be as good as it gets for now.

Here's more Daryl scoop from TVLine, with hints of slight redemption for the conflicted Dwight:

Question: Got any scoop on The Walking Dead? — Jeff
Ausiello: Sunday's episode (AMC, 9/8c) not only gives us our first real impression of what life is like at the Saviors' Sanctuary — and a worrisome indication of how Daryl is going to fare there — it also forces us, however reluctantly, to reconsider our opinion of Negan's henchman Dwight.

Dwight is such a fascinating, conflicted character in the comic book, and "The Cell" preview not only shows him, it looks like we'll hear from his wife, Sherry, another reluctant new Negan follower. We may even get the story of how Dwight got his face burnt in the time between Daryl meeting them in the woods and then meeting them again post-Saviors. Norman Reedus previously teased to EW that "Daryl never forgives himself" for Glenn's death, and "He goes to a very, very dark, dark place" from there. Reedus added to TV Guide, "You see shots of him being shoved down a hallway, and pushed by the head... And he's not fighting back, at all. He thinks he deserves to be there, and whatever is going to happen to him, he's just going to let it happen. He feels incredible guilt over what just happened. He's lost the will to fight back."

Carol, where are you to pull another Terminus?!

Presidential Election Causes Chaos in 'Homeland' Season 6 Trailer

Posted:

HomelandThe 2016 election has been one long, national nightmare — in real life and in fiction.

Showtime unveiled the first trailer for season 6 of "Homeland," which sees Carrie (Claire Danes) return from overseas to work for a Muslim aid organization in New York. Last we saw Carrie, she was living in Berlin as a security consultant for a billionaire philanthropist and helped the CIA avert a major terrorist attack.

The season takes place between a presidential election and the inauguration — a "strange, transitional time in the halls of government filled with anxiety and different competing interests." Hmm, sounds a little too close to the truth!
The trailer is moody and intense, with many shots of Carrie, Saul (Mandy Patinkin), and Dar Adal (F. Murray Abraham) looking perturbed and angry. At one point, Dar warns Carrie, "I don't think you understand how vulnerable you are." To which she shoots back, "I don't think you do."

Don't mess with Mathison!

There is, however, no sign of Rupert Friend's Peter Quinn, last seen in a coma at death's door.

"Homeland" season 6 premieres Sunday, Jan. 15 at 9 p.m. on Showtime.

Lady Gaga to Play Donatella Versace in 'American Crime Story' Season 3: Report

Posted:

LA Premiere Screening of "American Horror Story: Hotel" - Red CarpetLady Gaga is getting the role she was practically born to play: Donatella Versace.

Sources tell Us Weekly that the singer/actress will play the blonde-tressed fashion designer in season 3 of "American Crime Story," which tells the story of the 1997 murder of Gianni Versace. It's a "yeah, no duh" move, since Lady Gaga is a favorite of creator Ryan Murphy and has appeared in two seasons of "American Horror Story."

In fact, at Entertainment Weekly's recent PopFest, a panel moderator suggested the singer for the role, and a grinning Murphy replied "Ya think?"

Lady Gaga has long ties to Versace — she starred the fashion house's 2014 Spring ad campaign. She also paid tribute to her friendship with Donatella Versace in a song on her 2013 album "Artpop."

The Versace murder storyline is based on Maureen Orth's book, "Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History." Meanwhile, season 2 will focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

'Starship Troopers' Is Getting a Reboot and People Are Not Happy

Posted:

Starship TroopersIn today's reboot news,"Starship Troopers" will be the latest cult classic to get a new look for the new century.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Columbia Pictures is developing a reboot of the 1997 film based on Robert A. Heinlein's novel and directed by Paul Verhoeven. To pen the script, the studio has hired Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, the writers behind the upcoming "Baywatch" movie starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Zac Efron.

Heinlein's novel follows a young soldier who fights against alien bugs. Verhoeven's adaptation was a more satirical take and explored themes like war culture and propaganda films. It was not a box office hit at the time, but went on to gain a cult following.

Columbia reportedly wants a more faithful adaptation of the novel, which could generate controversy. The book has been accused of containing coded racism and promoting fascism. On Twitter, fans expressed dismay at a straight take on "Starship Troopers":

Dave Chappelle to Host 'Saturday Night Live' for First Time

Posted:

RUSH Philanthropic Arts Foundation Celebrates 20th Anniversary At Art For Life Sponsored By Bombay Sapphire GinComedian Dave Chappelle is coming back to television — by hosting "Saturday Night Live" on Nov. 12.

This marks Chappelle's debut as host and his return to sketch comedy. He headlined his titular Comedy Central show from 2003-2006, but stunned fans by walking away at its ratings and zeitgeist peak, citing burnout and loss of creative control. Since then, he's stuck mostly to stand-up performances, though he did appear in Spike Lee's "Chiraq."

The Nov. 12 episode also features musical guest A Tribe Called Quest, which is releasing its first new album in 18 years, titled "We Got It From Here ... Thank You 4 Your Service." It's the last album to feature Phife Dawg, who passed away in March.

Chappelle is just the latest first-time host to hit Studio 8H. "Doctor Strange" star Benedict Cumberbatch emcees this weekend, and the season so far has brought on "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, "Girl on a Train" star Emily Blunt, and "Suicide Squad" actress Margot Robbie.

Chappelle's outing could prove explosive, since it will be the first "SNL" after Tuesday's election. Should be one to watch!

'The Simpsons' to Make History After Two-Season Renewal

Posted:

The Simpsons"The Simpsons" will down in the history books — again.

Fox announced it is renewing the long-running animated series for seasons 29 and 30. "The Simpsons" already bested "Gunsmoke" for the record of most seasons of a TV show; now it will surpass the record for most episodes. By the end of season 30, "The Simpsons" will have aired 669 episodes to "Gunsmoke's" 635.

"This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series," said Fox Co-Chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman in a statement. "'The Simpsons' has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of Matt (Groening), Jim (James L. Brooks) and Al (Jean). Congratulations to everyone who works on this groundbreaking series — from the voice cast and producers to the writers and production team — you comprise one of the greatest collections of creative talent in the history of the medium. And to the millions of 'Simpsons' fans around the world, thank you for watching all these years. We're happy to tell you there's lots more to come."

"The Simpsons" recently aired its landmark 600th episode, the annual "Treehouse of Horror" installment. The animated show still pulls in good ratings for Fox, with this season averaging 7.2 million viewers across platforms.

Milo Ventimiglia Teases 'Really Lovely' 'Gilmore Girls' Final Four Words

Posted:

The upcoming "Gilmore Girls" revival series, "Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life," will finally give fans of the series some closure, and is set to feature the famous "final four words" that creator Amy Sherman-Palladino intended to end the series on before abruptly departing the show ahead of its seventh season. As eager fans wait not-so-patiently for the "A Year in the Life" premiere to hear the words that have been almost a decade in the making, star Milo Ventimiglia is promising that they're definitely worth the wait.

Yes, Ventimiglia -- who played Rory's high school boyfriend (and, if we can be biased, OTP) Jess Mariano in the original series, and is reprising the role for "A Year in the Life" -- knows what the final four words are, and recently revealed in an interview with People that Sherman-Palladino told him the secret several years ago. And according to the actor, they're the perfect fit for the series.

"It was just like, oh I get it. Oh wow, that's really lovely," Ventimiglia told People of his reaction upon hearing the famous words.

From what little we know so far about those words, they're spoken in dialogue between two characters -- most likely Rory (Alexis Bledel) and Lorelai (Lauren Graham) -- and they're a payoff of everything that's come before in the series. Not that that's a lot of pressure to put on four little words, or anything.

Regardless of what those words may be, we were already ridiculously excited for the return of our favorite "Girls" after more than nine years. Now, we just have to make it through the next three weeks.

"Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life" hits Netflix on November 25.

'Beauty and the Beast' Star Emma Watson Loves Belle's Yellow Dress as Much as You Do

Posted:

Emma Watson, beauty and the beast, belle, yellow dressThis week, audiences were treated to their first sneak peek of some of the iconic characters, sets, and costumes that are featured in Disney's upcoming live-action remake of animated classic "Beauty and the Beast," including The Dress -- a.k.a. the gorgeous yellow confection that Belle (Emma Watson) wears while dancing with the Beast (Dan Stevens) during one of the film's most memorable sequences. According to Watson, the importance of that garment and what it represents was not lost on her, and she and the film's costumer wanted to do both the dress and the story it tells justice while making the movie.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Watson explained the collaboration that went into crafting the frock, which was custom made by designer Jacqueline Durran ("Pride & Prejudice," "Atonement," "Anna Karenina"). The actress praised Durran's "wonderful" and "amazing" work on the dress, noting that the goal was to make the garment "utterly whimsical, and magical."

But there's much more to the dress than what meets the eye, Watson told EW:

"The scene that I wear that dress in, and I have that dance in, it really tells the story of Beast and Belle falling in love. You know, we don't have a huge amount of time in the story to tell that story. The dance, for me, is really where the audience starts to see it happening and starts knowing that it is happening. This is total, blissful escapism. You are transported to another world. The dress, and the dancing, and the candlelight, and the music — it was really fun to work on every aspect of that."

Audiences will be able to see Durran's work for themselves when "Beauty and the Beast" opens on March 17, 2017. For the designer's detailed breakdown of the construction of the dress, check out the full story over at Entertainment Weekly.

Paul Feig May Direct Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson Comedy

Posted:

Television Academy And SAG-AFTRA's 4th Annual Dynamic And Diverse Celebration - ArrivalsPaul Feig may be continuing his streak of directing hilarious female-fronted flicks, with a new report suggesting he could be teaming up with Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson.

According to Variety, Feig is in talks to direct an untitled comedy set in the world of late night talk shows. Kaling wrote the script, and will co-star alongside Oscar winner Thompson.

Feig has been carving out a niche for himself in Hollywood with his focus on helming comedies starring and directed toward women, an underserved audience that has proven quite eager for original content. The "Freaks and Geeks" creator is known for his work on hits including "Bridesmaids," "The Heat," and "Spy," and also directed this summer's all-female take on "Ghostbusters."

While Kaling made her name on television -- writing and starring in "The Office," and creating and starring in her own sitcom, "The Mindy Project" -- she's recently been on a hot streak in film. In addition to the Thompson project, she's also playing one of the titular thieves in the "Ocean's Eleven" spinoff "Ocean's Eight," and just signed on to play a high-profile role in the upcoming adaptation of literary classic "A Wrinkle in Time."

This is a promising partnership between three huge talents, and one we hope pans out. Stay tuned.

Quentin Tarantino Is Retiring After Making Two More Movies

Posted:

FRANCE-CINEMA-FESTIVAL-TARANTINOQuentin Tarantino won't be making "Deadpool 2," but apparently the director has a good reason for not helming the superhero sequel: He only plans to make two more movies before retiring from directing entirely.

The writer-director -- who has been hinting at a potential retirement after completing his 10th film for several years now -- confirmed that decision while appearing at the Adobe Max creativity conference in San Diego on Thursday.

"Drop the mic. Boom. Tell everybody, 'Match that shit,'" Tarantino explained to the crowd of the statement that he hoped to make with that 10-film oeuvre.

Those films don't encompass, however, a nonfiction project that the director has been researching for four years about cinema in the year 1970. That work could become "a book, a documentary, a five-part podcast" Tarantino said, though he hasn't made up his mind yet. After that, he'll start work on his next full-length, original feature, which is set in 1930s Australia and has a "Bonnie and Clyde" bent.

Such an eclectic output already makes Tarantino unique, and the director is gunning for greater Hollywood glory after his work is done.

"Hopefully, the way I define success when I finish my career is that I'm considered one of the greatest filmmakers that ever lived," he told the Adobe Max crowd. "And going further, a great artist, not just filmmaker."

Michael J. Fox Salutes the Cubs for (Almost) Getting 'Back to the Future' Prediction Right

Posted:

back to the future, back to the future part ii, back to the future 2, cubs, michael j. fox, world seriesLast year, fans of the "Back to the Future" series got to see for themselves just how accurate the second movie's predictions about the year 2015 turned out to be, with some of them (hoverboards, power laces) coming true, and others definitely not (sorry, flying cars and the fashion trend of wearing two ties at the same time). One of those cheeky bits of fortune telling included the proclamation that the Chicago Cubs would win the World Series, and while it didn't happen in 2015, the team's historic championship this week was close enough to earn the attention and admiration of none other than Marty McFly himself.

In a post shared on Twitter, actor Michael J. Fox couldn't help but remark about the coincidence, noting that "Back to the Future Part II"'s prediction was "Only off by a year, not bad." He also threw in a reference to one of his character's signature lines to drive the point home.

Screenwriter Bob Gale shared part of the inspiration behind that now-infamous Cubs reference in an interview with Sports Illustrated last year, noting that any baseball fan was familiar with the team's reputation as perennial also-rans.

"With the Cubs folklore of being the lovable losers that never get there, it was just a natural joke to say, 'What is the most absurd thing that you could come up with?'" Gale told SI at the time.

Finally, Cubs fans can say that the thought isn't so absurd anymore.

'Doctor Strange' Star Mads Mikkelsen Loves to Kung Fu Fight Tilda Swinton

Posted:

"If it's an American film, it's often the villain."

Mads Mikkelsen is very aware that if Hollywood calls, it's usually to cast him as the Big Bad -- and he's totally fine with that. From battling James Bond in "Casino Royale" to, now, slinging magics at Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel's "Doctor Strange," Mikkelsen has made a career Stateside as bringing very memorable villains to life on-screen. Having locked down "playing a villain," there are some perks that come with the job, like kung-fu fighting Tilda Swinton.

Moviefone recently sat down with Mikkelsen to discuss his new villainous role, Kaecilius, his character's tragic backstory, and kicking an Oscar-winner's ass.

Moviefone: You've played many villains. So, when you get the call about this gig, are you like "Man, another villain role?" Or is it more: "Holy sh**, a Marvel villain role!"?

Mads Mikkelsen: More like "Holy sh** -- a Marvel villain role." When I get these opportunities, I definitely don't feel disappointed. The alternative is not to work over here, and, I mean -- it was Marvel. There was flying kung-fu. There was nothing working against taking this role."

And you're quite the fan of old-school, Kung Fu movies.

I grew up with them, watching them, yes. I grew up with Bruce Lee, When [director] Scott [Derrickson] pitched me the whole story for me on the phone, we get maybe five, then minutes in and he says: "And there's a lot of kung-fu and flying." I said: "Whoa whoa, what? Kung Fu? I'm in." All of a sudden it was like a boyhood dream coming true.
Marvel movie villains are typically criticized for being undercooked, or underwritten. They're just there to serve as a punching bag for hero sometimes --

Uh huh. Right.

But there seems to have been much consideration given to fleshing our your character and giving him a tragic backstory. How much input did you have in shaping that?

I have not been in the boat of saying they -- the villains -- have been "underwritten" or "under-meaty." They serve a purpose, as opposed to "Hannibal," which is just a completely different animal in how it handles the villain. There, you're spending as much time getting to know Hannibal as you are with Hugh Dancy's character, Will Graham. So you get a different approach to the character -- you get (hopefully) to like him, maybe, or sympathetic to him. Or, at the very least, understand him. In a film, a villain like this, he's serving a purpose. He's reflecting the hero. So, we can't anticipate that he's going to have his own complete story. That's just not how stories like this work.

Having said that, I think it's important that they give [Kaecilius] some valid cards to play. That he's just not, you know, crazy and wanting to take over the world for no apparent reason at all -- other than because he can. But life, for my character, wanting life without pain, and suffering -- without death -- I'll buy that, you know? Sounds like a good plan. It sounds like a better place than we have now. So that's what Strange has to face -- his own reflection of his morals, and now this other guy, with his own morals, who is darker.

How much input did you have in shaping that arc?

It was pretty much there, on the page, when we started. We increased his backstory a little bit, when we talked about it.
Now, that fight between you and the Ancient One -- what was shooting that like, going to work that day and saying "Well, I get to kick ass with Tilda Swinton today?"

[Laughs] It was great. But, there's also knowing that she probably gets to kick my ass as well [laughs]. It was fun. You know, we rehearse these things a lot and, sometimes, we can't always show up at the same time to same fight rehearsals, so we [spar] with stunt doubles. But once we were there and we do it together -- she was very elegant in her moves. Very musical. She was very spot-on; she would go for it and she would be right there with her blocking.

I love the thing, the move I do, where -- I kind of deflect something, and hit her, roll around on the ground then, like, punch the ground and, there's this shockwave that happens and she just takes it. Moves just a little bit and you're like "whoa." [The Ancient One's] stronger, she's got the upper hand.

"Doctor Strange" is in theaters today.
