Live-Action 'Beauty and the Beast': Belle Gets a New Backstory

Posted:

We're in for some big changes when Disney gives "Beauty and the Beast" the live-action treatment -- and it won't just be a matter of seeing the classic characters go from 2D to 3D.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emma Watson, who plays the film's heroine, Belle, revealed that her character will get a new backstory. Instead of just spending her time reading all the books she can get her hands on, she'll have a knack for inventing as well.

"In the animated movie, it's her father who is the inventor, and we actually co-opted that for Belle," Watson told EW.

The change seems like a good one because, as Watson points out, Belle's love of reading didn't seem like enough to make her such an outsider. The actress wanted a better explanation, plus to see other ways her character spent her time.

"We created a backstory for her, which was that she had invented a kind of washing machine, so that, instead of doing laundry, she could sit and use that time to read instead," said Watson. "So, yeah, we made Belle an inventor."

That leaves Belle's father, Maurice (Kevin Kline), in need of a new occupation, but don't worry, all bases have been covered. In the remake, he'll make music boxes. Apparently, he'll also be quite protective of Belle after her mother's death, and so he'll use them to show her countries she's never visited.

Changes sometimes meet resistance from loyal fans, but so far, nothing seems drastic enough to spark outrage. We'll see what other changes Disney has in store for us when "Beauty and the Beast" opens on March 17, 2017.

Nicolas Cage on 'Dog Eat Dog,' Nouveau Shamanism, and That 'Superman Lives' Documentary

Posted:

Premiere Of RLJ Entertainment's "Dog Eat Dog" - ArrivalsThere's something inarguably admirable about the way Nicolas Cage approaches each and every one of his performances -- these are balls-to-the-wall ventures, full of blood, sweat, and, occasionally, screaming about bees. No matter the project, Cage commits himself fully and with a kind of knowing playfulness. He's never phoned in a performance. You've never gone to one of his movies and come out thinking, Boy, it would have been nice of Cage was more engaged in that role. IT. DOESN'T. HAPPEN.

And you can feel that fully in "Dog Eat Dog" (in theaters Friday), an absolutely insane crime thriller from Paul Schrader. In the film, Cage stars as Troy, a recently released convict who teams up with his murderous buddy, Mad Dog (an equally incredible Willem Dafoe), for a kidnapping job that goes terribly wrong. This is the kind of job Cage describes as "a real good gig that'll take your t*ts off." The film, which Schrader co-wrote with Matthew Wilder and is based on a novel by Edward Bunker, played during this year's Cannes Film Festival and is out this Friday. It's a wild ride, and Cage is, of course, unimpeachable.

I got to chat with Cage on the phone about "Dog Eat Dog," what makes these collaborations with Paul Schrader so special, his Humphrey Bogart impression, and the sequence where he and Dafoe get into a condiment fight. Also, I quiz him about his "nouveau shamanism" acting style, and the recently released alternate ending to his underrated Brian De Palma collaboration "Snake Eyes," as well as the documentary ("The Death of 'Superman Lives': What Happened?") that was made about his aborted "Superman" project with director Tim Burton.

This is the second movie you've made with Paul Schrader in the last few years. I was wondering if you could talk about your collaboration and what makes it so special.

Well, it's actually the third movie we've worked on together since he was the one who adapted "Bringing Out the Dead" for Marty [Scorsese]. I remember way back when I was making "Bringing Out the Dead" and we all had dinner at Scorsese's house. And Paul was giving me his thoughts on all sorts of things, particularly when it came to performance. I remember him saying to me, "Don't throw your pearls before swine." He wrote me this long list of notes pertaining to the performance. One of his notes said, "I prefer to have more complexity," and what he meant was create a character that has more questions than answers, because they'll have a longer shelf life. I thought that was really interesting, especially because he was just writing and not directing that movie, and he still took the time to give me those notes.

Paul is a total intellectual. He's probably the smartest guy in the room, whichever room he walks into. And as you rightly pointed out, I did two movies with him recently. He wrote "Dying of the Light," which is incidentally one of the best characters I ever read. That movie was taken from him in a way that was quite vulgar and he's very disappointed he couldn't get his cut. So he and I decided that we would work together.

Why I like working with Paul is that he doesn't fix what isn't broken, he doesn't give you too many notes, he trusts his actors, he's confident, and he gives you the space to let you bring it. And that is a very good environment to work in as an actor.

It seems like you're having a great time in the movie, particularly in a sequence I can only describe as a "condiment fight." Was that in the script or did you guys just come up with that?

That was all Paul. I think he had seen something like it in another movie, but I don't know the name of the movie. Paul is like that -- he's unafraid to cherry pick from other movies. He's even cherry picking from "Mr. Robot." He saw that image in another film. I like that moment. It speaks volumes to the relationship between Troy and Dog and they probably had a connection that was deeper than anything that was written or on the page.

There's this really interesting thread through the movie where your character is compared to Humphrey Bogart, and then, by the end of the movie, you're doing a full-on Humphrey Bogart impression. And you've done stuff like that in the past. Where does that come from?

It all started when I was doing "Wild at Heart." I had read a book called "An Actor Prepares" by Stanislavski, which is a great book by the way, and is a book I recommend to anyone studying to be an actor. But, me being me, I wanted to break the rules and one of the rules he puts forth is to never imitate anybody. And I thought that was interesting and I understood because you have to find your own voice and your own style.

When I did "Wild at Heart," I was thinking about something else I was developing called "art synthesis," where if you can do something in one art form, you can do it in another. Andy Warhol had done these marvelous collages with these wonderful figures. And I thought if Warhol could do something like that, why can't a film actor do that? With "Wild at Heart," I thought we could break these rules and do a Warhol-esque performance and take an icon and overlay it on a character, because the character of Ripley clearly loved Elvis. And then "Kick-Ass" came along and I thought, Well, this character is obviously obsessed with Batman and for me the great Batman is Adam West. I thought, Why doesn't he channel that? Maybe he's got some mechanism in him that is nuts, and he would do that to have some confidence on the job.

By the time we got to "Dog Eat Dog," and this all evolved as we were filming ... Let me begin with this: I wanted Troy to stand out as a convict. I didn't want him to have tattoos. They said 90% of convicts have tattoos and I said, "Well, Troy doesn't." I wanted him to be like the lotus flower on the muddy River Nile: touched but not stained. I wanted him to aspire to be something that he is not. I wanted him to have aspirations of being his favorite movie hero, so I turned him into a movie buff. And who would be the greatest icon of a gangster? Humphrey Bogart, he was the best, and that's me speaking, Nicolas Cage. But the character also feels like he's the king of cinema and aspires to be that kind of elegant gangster. He dresses better than the other guys and talks movies. By the end of the movie, Paul had come up with this idea that Paul was dead, and maybe he gets to be the character he loves so much before he goes to hell. But I want people to figure that out for themselves.

You just talked about your acting style that you implemented here, and I was always fascinated when you spoke about "nouveau shamanism" when you were promoting the last "Ghost Rider" movie. Do you try to come up with a new approach for each movie? What is that process like?

At this point, the process is an instinctual process relying heavily to the imagination and opening myself up to anything, really, that can inform or affect performance, including things I read in a newspaper. There was a scene in a movie I did called "Joe" where I didn't know how to get to a scene. I knew it had to be emotional and the character had to be pissed off and angry and upset with what was going on with Tye Sheridan's character and I remember reading in the newspaper this story about a child who was at the zoo who fell into a pit of wild dogs and was eaten alive and nobody was there to save it. I remember it really upset me and pissed me off so I opened myself up to that and got there. So it's about having the fluidity and sensitivity to be open to influences that fill in a performance. That's very private and sacred stuff in some ways and it's hard to talk about.

When I mentioned nouveau shamanism, I was really talking about the actor's role in society and actors, whether they know it or not, were the first shamans. What would happen, and this is pre-Christian, where villages all over the world, the people would go to get answers from the shaman and the shaman would go into these trances and act out situations and then locate answers from his imagination and then explain it to the village and give the village some peace of mind. That's no different than when you go to the movie theater and see a character drinking himself to death and you know someone in your family with a drinking problem and you see that character and go, "Holy sh*t," and get solace from that. It's not all that mystical or esoteric but it's an understanding of where the shaman wound up, which is actors.

One of the other things that came out this year was in the "De Palma" documentary; the original ending for "Snake Eyes" was finally seen. Was that validating?

I didn't get to see it. I would love to see the "De Palma" documentary. I'm a huge fan of Brian's and I tried to get to work with him several times since we did "Snake Eyes." But I didn't get to see the documentary or the alternate ending. Could you explain it to me?

Oh sure, it was when the big wave comes over Atlantic City and you're trapped in a tunnel, drowning.

Yes, that's fascinating. I remember him talking about it but I didn't know that he shot the wave. That's fantastic.

Similarly, there was a documentary out last year about your "Superman" movie with Tim Burton. Was it nice to see that stuff finally get out there?

Yeah, it was nice that the filmmakers gave folks a chance to look at what it was really looking like, instead of that goofy picture that came out, which was a Polaroid that didn't have any real lighting. It wasn't even a real costume. It was somebody trying to start a story and created a shakedown on the Internet, but it was entirely false. You can see the way it was genuinely going with a little bit of care and understanding put upon it.

"Dog Eat Dog" opens in select theaters Friday, and expands to VOD and digital HD November 11.

The 'Predator' Reboot May Star Olivia Munn: Report

Posted:

ENTERTAINMENT-US-SPIKE TV GUYS CHOICEThe "Predator" reboot may have found its leading lady.

Olivia Munn is in talks to star in the latest film in the sci-fi horror franchise, reports THR. If she signs on, the actress will join Boyd Holbrook, who is set to play a Special Forces commando. Munn's would-be character is reportedly a scientist, but with most plot details remaining secret, it's unclear exactly how she'd be involved in the story.

The film stems from a series that launched with 1987's "Predator" and has continued with two sequels and two spinoff movies so far. The upcoming reboot was penned by Shane Black and Fred Dekker and is said to center on an alien-hunter hard at work in none other than the suburbs. Black is also set to direct.

Munn is definitely prepared to take on another action flick. She has appeared in films like "X-Men: Apocalypse," "Ride Along 2," and "Iron Man 2." Next up for her, though, is the upcoming comedy "Office Christmas Party."

The "Predator" reboot is scheduled for release in 2018.

New 'Office Christmas Party' Trailer: Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman Partake in Insanity

Posted:

Bad behavior sometimes emerges at company holiday gatherings, but rarely does it reach the level seen in "Office Christmas Party."

Paramount Pictures dropped a hilarious new trailer for the comedy today, and it's full of absolute mayhem. In the preview, we see company CEO Carol (Jennifer Aniston) try to close down the branch where her brother Clay (T.J. Miller) and Chief Technical Officer Josh (Jason Bateman) work, only for her employees to try and save it with a raucous holiday party. They invite a potential client (Courtney B. Vance) in hopes of winning him over with the festivities.

The party has all the ingredients of either epic success or terrible failure: There's sledding down the stairs, water coolers turned into an open bar, and even swinging from Christmas lights.

The star-studded cast of "Office Christmas Party" also includes Vanessa Bayer, Jillian Bell, Jamie Chung, Rob Corddry, Abbey Lee, Kate McKinnon, Olivia Munn, Karan Soni, and Matt Walsh.

Watch the madness unfold when the film opens on Dec. 9.

Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone Struggle to Make It in New 'La La Land' Trailer

Posted:

There's no business like show business.

The harsh realities of how hard it is to make it in Hollywood are on display in the new trailer for the musical film "La La Land." While it's strange to think of stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling as anything but wildly successful, they play aspiring actress Mia and struggling jazz musician Sebastian, respectively. The duo meet and fall in love -- all while pursuing their artistic dreams.

It doesn't look like an easy ride for the characters, even though the film is filled with song and dance. Mia and Sebastian both deal with serious setbacks in the trailer, but it's not all bad. They also have a truly movie-worthy romance bound to inspire swoons.

The trailer puts Stone and Gosling's chemistry in the spotlight once again. It looks like the pair will be just as irresistible together as they were in their two previous films together, "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and "Gangster Squad."
"La La Land" hits theaters on Dec. 9.

Meryl Streep to Receive Cecil B. DeMille Award at 2017 Golden Globes

Posted:

'Florence Foster Jenkins' Red carpet - 11th Rome Film Festival

Meryl Streep has proven once again that there's no prize she can't win: The celebrated actress has been selected to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in January.

The honor, which is the Globes' version of a lifetime achievement award, is given to entertainers in honor of their body of work throughout their careers, and Streep's is certainly one to admire. She has the most Oscar nominations of any actor in history (19, with three wins), and also holds that distinction from the Globes (29, with eight wins). Recent recipients have included Denzel Washington, George Clooney, Woody Allen, Jodie Foster, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, and Martin Scorsese.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association also saw the award as a no-brainer, citing Streep's stellar career in a statement announcing the honor:

"It's no surprise that the HFPA has chosen Meryl Streep as the recipient of the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award," HFPA president Lorenzo Soria said. "Meryl's enthralling body of work across a diverse set of genres has made her a role model over the past 40 years, and she will continue to do so for generations to come. She has always taken roles with strong female leads, creating art by showing vulnerability and portraying truth on the big screen. Simply put, she is a trailblazer, having paved the way for women in television, film and stage. For shattering gender and age barriers, all with finesse and grace, the HFPA is humbled to bestow this honor upon her."

Streep will accept the award at the Golden Globes ceremony on January 8, 2017.

'Jumanji' Release Date Pushed to December 2017

Posted:

The upcoming reboot of "Jumanji" is getting a new release date, with studio Sony pushing back the debut from next summer to next winter.

"Jumanji," the Dwayne Johnson flick that's being billed as sort of a reboot-sequel-reimagining hybrid of the hit 1995 film (itself based on a 1981 children's book by Chris Van Allsburg), was originally slated to hit theaters on July 28, 2017. Now, it will premiere on December 22, 2017. It's now going head to head with hotly-anticipated threequel "Pitch Perfect 3," animated flick "Ferdinand," and '60s reboot "The Six Billion Dollar Man."

No official reason was given for the switch, though it's probably due to the shifting release date of fellow Sony property "The Dark Tower," which has moved from its original February 2017 date to "Jumanji"'s old July release date. That flick needs some more time in post-production, and the studio didn't want to rush it into theaters (or risk a ballooning budget by working overtime to get the special effects ready for an early 2017 date).

And Sony isn't done adjusting its calendar yet. Also moving release dates are the Denzel Washington action sequel "The Equalizer 2" (from September 29, 2017 to September 14, 2018), the reboot of 1990s flick "Flatliners" (from August 18, 2017 to September 29, 2017), and long-awaited sequel "T2 Trainspotting" (from February 3, 2017 to limited release on March 3, 2017, and wide release on on March 10, 2017), which just released its first trailer on Thursday.

Stay tuned. With so many movies planned out so far in advance, it's likely this calendar could shift once again.

Ewan McGregor Returns in the 'Trainspotting' Sequel Trailer

Posted:

trainspotting, t2, sequel, trainspotting 2, ewan mcgregor, trailer, teaserA new, NSFW trailer for "T2 Trainspotting," the upcoming sequel to Danny Boyle's 1996 dark comedy "Trainspotting," is here, checking in with the first flick's protagonists two decades later.

The clip opens with Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) returning to his Scottish hometown, where he tracks down his buddies Spud (Ewen Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle). While Mark seems to have more or less moved on from his drug-addled days that were depicted in the first flick, it seems his friends are more or less in the same place.

"So, what you been up to for 20 years?" Sick Boy asks Mark, seeming less than thrilled to see his old friend.

It seems Mark has spent much of that time reflecting on and distancing himself from his past -- he tries to make amends with his former flame, Diane (Kelly Macdonald), and promises her he's no longer a heroin addict -- though it doesn't take him long to fall back into some of his old habits. Still, he urges his friends to "choose life" over a life of drugs, saying in a rousing monologue, "You're an addict. So be addicted. Just be addicted to something else."

"T2 Trainspotting" hits U.K. theaters on January 27, 2017. It's due to debut in the U.S. for a limited run on March 3, 2017, with a wide release planned for March 10, 2017.

Posted:

a series of unfortunate events, count olaf, netflix, neil patrick harris, lemony snicket, teaserThe first teaser trailer for Netflix's upcoming adaptation of "A Series of Unfortunate Events" was all build-up, promising "cruel whimsy and whimsical cruelty " to come. Now, another teaser, featuring footage from the actual series, in finally here, and it certainly delivers on that promise.

The short clip gives viewers a brief synopsis of the story, which focuses on the three orphaned Baudelaire siblings, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, who are sent to live with their mysterious uncle, Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris). Unfortunately for the kids -- and the word "unfortunate" will almost certainly pop up again and again in this series -- Olaf is a cruel, greedy man, whose only aim is to swindle the children out of their parents' inheritance.

Olaf proves to be a formidable foe for the Baudelaires, described by others as "a vile, terrible person" and "a thief and a murderer." Thankfully, the kids can more than hold their own against their uncle, and band together to outsmart him at every turn, while also working to solve their the mystery behind their parents' death.

The eight-episode series is set to debut on Netflix on January 13.

A Viktor Krum Love Triangle Was Cut from 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows'

Posted:

harry potter, deathly hallows, hermione, viktor krum, love triangleThe seventh and final installment of J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" book series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," was so eventful that it was split into two parts for its big screen adaptation. But according to a star from one of the series's earlier movie adaptations, there was an additional storyline that was written specifically for that film, but was ultimately cut from the final version.

Stanislav Ianevski, who played Durmstrang's Triwizard Tournament champion Viktor Krum in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," recently revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly's Binge podcast that he almost made an appearance in "Deathly Hallows," too -- and was meant to make some trouble for the burgeoning romance between Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson). According to Ianevski, the scene in question was the brainchild of director David Yates, and took place at the wedding of Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour, which occurs near the beginning of "Deathly Hallows - Part 1."

"We did a new dance scene, I sort of stole [Hermione] from Ron," the actor explained. "She remembered our old times, Viktor was acting like a gentleman again, happy to see her, she was happy to see him. Ron was sitting on the side, was jealous, and then Viktor took her to the dance floor."

Alas, Yates decided to cut the scene, though the actor understands why.

" ... [I]t obviously didn't fit with all the horrible things that happen in the last book," Ianevski told EW. Still, he thinks things could still have worked out between the Quidditch player and the smartest girl at Hogwarts.

"If the story from the seventh [film] that David Yates invented extended itself then maybe they would've gotten into a fight with Ron, and Viktor would obviously win and then live happily on forever with Hermione," the actor said.

Sounds like he and Rowling -- who has admitted she has some regrets about pairing up Ron and Hermione -- should get together for some drinks and write their own "Potter" fanfic.

New 'Wonder Woman' Trailer Teases Epic War With Unhappy Ending

Posted:

Oh, "Wonder Woman," please, please PLEASE be as good as you look.

The chills are non-stop in the new "Wonder Woman" trailer, but there's a dark edge. We first met Gal Gadot's modern Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in "Batman v Superman," when she was wiser and more cynical about humanity. The new trailer starts with that Diana, now working at the Louvre, and has her reminisce about the World War I photo from her past, which is explored in the 2017 origin story.

"I used to want to save the world," Diana says in a voice-over. "This beautiful place. But the closer you get, the more you see the great darkness within. I learned this the hard way, a long, long time ago."

That basically tells us that things don't have a happy ending, and that somewhere along the way Diana loses her faith, and only recovers it many years later in time for "BvS" and -- also next year -- "Justice League."

Still, it's easy to get distracted from the dark undertone with those gorgeous battle shots, and the light touches of humor.

Watch the trailer:

If this one disappoints... No, we won't even jinx it. The "Wonder Woman" is out June 2, 2017. She'll be back for "Justice League" on November 17, 2017.

AMC Extends 'The Walking Dead' Season 7 Episode 4 to 85 Minutes

Posted:

When Negan brings his big bad self to Alexandria for the first time on "The Walking Dead" Season 7, fans will have to suffer through that unwelcome house call for an extra 25 minutes.

The Season 7 premiere, Episode 2, and this Sunday's November 6 Episode 3 have all stayed around the one-hour mark. Only the "Talking Dead" episode after the premiere was supersized to 90 minutes. But for the November 13 Episode 4, called "Service," AMC is extending the action from 9 to 10:25 p.m.

That's the scoop from SpoilerTV, and the 85-minute time is confirmed by local listings. Here's the synopsis Zap2it has for "Service":

"The remaining members of the group try to keep it together in Alexandria; they receive a sobering visit."

It's Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Probably being rude to poor Olivia, among others. Bet he didn't even call first to say he was coming. (Nice potential foreshadowing with the bars, though.)

This Sunday, "The Cell" is scheduled from 9 to 10:01 p.m., following Daryl Dixon as Negan's new prisoner at the Saviors's base. We may not see Rick Grimes and company at all, until this highly anticipated Episode 4.

There's a spoilery character episode guide listing when characters will reportedly appear, and it looks like most of the cast -- including Daryl, Dwight, and the Alexandria crew -- will be in Episode 4. We may have to wait until Episode 5 to see Maggie and Sasha at Hilltop, then we should check in with Tara and Heath in Episode 6. It could be a while before we see Carol and Morgan again, like possibly the Episode 8 midseason finale.

Are you excited, nervous, or neither for this extended episode of "The Walking Dead"?

This Country Music Edition of 'Mean Tweets' Is for Drunk Aunts & Mugatu

Posted:

It's time to grab yourself a foamy latte, spike it with something strong, spit it out at Todd, then watch the latest "Jimmy Kimmel Live" round of Mean Tweets.

The 50th annual CMA Awards aired last night, followed by Kimmel, so he used the opportunity to present the second all-country music edition of Mean Tweets. The lineup of insulted musicians included Trace Adkins, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Houser, Cassadee Pope, Dan + Shay, Cole Swindell, Jana Kramer, Granger Smith, Miranda Lambert, Florida Georgia Line, Jake Owen, Little Big Town, Brett Eldredge, Hunter Hayes, Maren Morris, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, and Chris Stapleton.

Here are some highlights:

• "Bonnie Raitt looks like the aunt who would have a few too many at your mom's birthday party and try to fight your dad."

• "In case of national emergency, all air traffic will be redirected to Miranda Lambert's forehead."

• "The guys from Florida George line were engineered in a douche factory." Their response: "Right down the road from here, actually."

• "Why does the blonde in Little Big Town have hair like a Zoolander villain?"

• "For some reason my mom is determined that Brett Eldredge is always drunk. I don't know, maybe he is." His response: "I like your mom."

• "It's not a hooker convention, it's a Dolly Parton concert." She wasn't hurt, though, since she modeled her look after a hooker.

• "I think it's safe to say Chris Stapleton has an insane public hair situation."

• The best one was probably to Willie Nelson, but only because of his delivery (at the 2:17 mark): "Willie Nelson, you're gettin pretty crusty, pal."

Check it out:

Don't miss the last two rounds of Mean Tweets -- one just by President Obama, and the other a full celeb lineup with classic responses from Ryan Gosling and Bryan Cranston.

'The Dark Tower' Movie Just Got Postponed, But That's Good News

Posted:

Roland Deschain (Idris Elba) in Columbia Pictures' THE DARK TOWER.Phew! It's often cause for concern when a movie needs to be rescheduled for more work, but not for "The Dark Tower."

The Stephen King adaptation starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey wrapped filming in late July, Entertainment Weekly reported, and it was scheduled for release on February 17, 2017. But sources told EW that Sony and company are pushing the release date to summer 2017, deciding -- perhaps belatedly -- that post-production on the $60 million film was being rushed too much and couldn't be done justice by February.

"It's a very fiscally responsible budget, and trying to stay in budget to make money and stay profitable means the VFX won't be finished in time," a source told EW. "Now that there's more time, they're not paying rush charges to get the effects where they need to be."

Considering February is pretty much a dead zone for movies, and summer is where the blockbusters live, it's hard not to see this as a win-win. EW added that the extra time also gives the studio and cast more time to publicize the movie (there isn't even a trailer out yet) and build momentum for what is hoped to be a multi-movie franchise with a TV spinoff already in the works.

So even though fans may be disappointed to cross off that February release date, this is positive news in the big picture scheme. Then again, if "The Dark Tower" ends up completely steamrolled by one of the many summer 2017 superhero movies or blockbuster sequels, the studio may regret the decision. But it's good news for now.

UPDATE: The new release date has been revealed to be July 28, 2017.

Laurence Basse Already Won 'Project Runway' Season 15

Posted:

"Project Runway" Season 15 is still airing, but no matter who wins, Laurence Basse won. The designer -- who modeled for 15 years and spent six years in fashion design school in Paris -- is the picture of poise on the Lifetime show, just focusing on work while many other designers gossip and "shade."

She definitely has a signature in her leather work, especially in jackets but also in the (as Nina Garcia put it) "Bentley" of little black dresses in the cocktail dress challenge:

Laurence didn't win that week (for some reason), but she did win last week's Episode 7 "Welcome to the Urban Jungle" challenge. Actress Leslie Jones -- who wore a dress by "Project Runway" Season 4 winner Christian Siriano to the "Ghostbusters" premiere -- was one of the many fans to wish she had her own Laurence jacket:

That was actually Laurence's second win, after the Episode 2 JustFab.com challenge:

At this point, "Project Runway" Season 15 has finished shooting, the designers have already shown at Fashion Week, and Laurence either won the season or she didn't. (This USA Today report describing Fashion Week runway looks sure hints to Laurence being one of the finalists, at the very least.) GoldDerby now has Laurence with the best odds to win. But it seems pretty clear from fan reactions -- including celebrity requests -- that Laurence has won herself a thriving post-PR career either way.

"Project Runway" Season 15 airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on Lifetime.

'Doctor Strange' Star Benedict Wong on Playing the One Librarian You 'Don't F*** With'

Posted:

[SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't seen Marvel's "Doctor Strange," stop reading now.]

Benedict Wong has either the coolest or craziest audition story ever.

Securing the role of badass librarian (and Beyonce fan) Wong in Marvel's "Doctor Strange" involved three countries, two audition tapes, and one hell of a fast turnaround.

"Marvel contacted me while I was shooting [Netflix series] 'Marco Polo,'" Wong recalled. "I made an audition tape in Budapest. They came back with some tweaks when I was in Slovakia, so I went back on tape there. And by the time I was in Malaysia, the lovely casting director (Sarah Finn) called up and said: 'Congratulations. You're gonna have an amazing time.'"

What she didn't tell him was that he was going to have less than 48 hours to take off his Kubla Khan costume and put on that of the Mystic Arts' secret weapon.

"I literally flew back home to London, dropped by bags, got picked up an hour later by Marvel, went straight into costume fittings, and then pretty much the next day, I was on set with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Cumberbatch."
The ensuing jetlag did not prevent Wong from appreciating the honor of playing a prominent Asian hero in a genre sorely devoid of them. A self-professed comics fan -- he owns the first issue of "Web of Spider-Man" -- Wong would watch the Marvel films and ask himself: "Where are the Asian superheroes?"

Wong is very aware that Asians lack role models in the blockbuster landscape dominated by comic book movies, and he was glad that producer Kevin Feige and director Scott Derrickson were on the same page on how to advance this version of Wong from his very dated, very cliched "manservant role" in the comics.

"When I was having early conversations and meetings with Kevin and Scott, they were very firm that they were not going down that [out-of-date] road with the character. Wong is this librarian, who is not your average librarian. We don't f*** with him."

He continued: "Looking back on the source material, from the '60s," Wong said, "there were certain aspects to the Wong character that -- I'm so pleased we left them back in the '60s, you know? We're creating the Wong of our times."

The more modern Wong, when he's not protecting books full of ancient (and dangerous) spells, subverts expectation with his memorable role in the film's action-packed climax, where he appears alongside Strange as the heroes battle the villain forward in time as the world around them is in rewind. It's really inventive, really entertaining stuff -- but it only scratches the surface of what Wong might do in future films.

"[Wong] is Strange's intellectual mentor. And this is the beginning of the introduction of who Wong is, and where he is going in these films. [Audiences] should look forward and expect to see more of Wong and his bag of relics and let's see what happens."

"Doctor Strange" hits theaters Nov. 4.

Ryan Reynolds & Conan Kiss (for 20 Seconds) in Tender 'The Notebook 2' Clip

Posted:

Confirmed: 1) Ryan Reynolds is the funniest person alive. 2) Conan O'Brien is the luckiest person alive. Also probably worth confirming: 3) Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams are out there right now, steaming with jealousy.

Last night, Reynolds was on "Conan" and was basically Deadpool without the costume. In a little game he played with Conan, Andy Richter, and the Apollo Theater audience, he had everyone guess what he was really there to promote. So....

What was Ryan Reynolds really on "Conan" to promote?

• A new line of underwear made of thinly sliced ham?
• His new documentary about dolphins ... and how to stop them?
• His new parenting book: "10 Easy Steps to Lower Your Child's Self-Esteem"?
• Reynolds Wrap: "When You Need to Wrap, Wrap With Reynolds"?
• His sex tape with the cast of "Fox & Friends" called "Can You Guess Where My Thumb Is?"
• His album of children songs about Civil War wounds?
• Or a clip from his new film, "The Notebook 2," co-starring Conan?

As you may have guessed, it was the final answer, and for once, Conan allowed them to roll the clip. So here are Ryan and Conan making out for 20 full seconds in the rain in a beautiful clip from "The Notebook 2":
So tender. So honest. Take our money now.

Watch more of Ryan's "Conan" clips on the show's site. He's our treasure.

The Chicago Cubs won their first World Series since 1908, in a Game 7 win against the Cleveland Indians. Cubs superfan Bill Murray has become the celebrity face of the team, and his reaction to the win was passed around the Internet like a happiness talisman:

Murray even got sprayed in the face with champagne as part of the celebration: "I knew I was going to cry, I didn't think it was because I was blind," the actor joked (via the Chicago Tribune).

"This is it," Murray said. "This was a long time coming. This is really great." Did he ever imagine the Cubs would win? "Hell, yes," he answered. "You kidding? I've been imagining this for a long time. I didn't think it would happen in Cleveland but I thought it would happen. I thought we'd have it in Wrigley Field. Just being in Wrigley Field and seeing all that excitement this week and the last few weeks is dreamy. It's really pretty cool."

Here's more of Bill Murray celebrating:
Congrats to all Cubs fans, and condolences to Cleveland. Maybe next year.
