'A Beautiful Planet' Offers an Astronaut's-Eye View of Earth

Posted: 04 May 2016 10:00 PM PDT

It's 7:30 a.m. aboard the International Space Station, and for Flight Engineer Dr. Kjell N. Lindgren, the morning routine is pretty standard. There’s breakfast, morning hygiene, a glance at the day's schedule, and a quick survey of the news and weather. And of course, drinking coffee from a zero-gravity espresso cup. All this and more is depicted in the new IMAX film A Beautiful Planet. The movie is a fascinating juxtaposition of the daily life of astronauts inside the ISS research lab, training facility and observatory, paired with breathtaking views of natural phenomena such as the aurora borealis. IMAX, in partnership with NASA, released the movie to showcase the beauty of Earth in a way that has not been captured before, while offering a...

Russell Crowe to Play a Dr. Jekyll Type in Tom Cruise's 'The Mummy' Remake

Posted: 04 May 2016 09:00 PM PDT

Just this morning, we reported that Universal has two new release dates for its monster movie cinematic universe, and now we might have a hint of what the first one could be: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Why make that guess? Because according to Variety, Russell Crowe is now in talks to play that dualistic character in the first installment in the franchise, The Mummy.  Variety actually refers to the part as merely a "Dr. Jekyll type," implying the studio doesn't have the rights to the Robert Louis Stevenson character, though he's technically in the public domain. Perhaps it's because these classic characters are being updated for modern audiences with a present-day setting in a way that will make them only loosely recognizable.  There's also...

The Best Star Wars Day Video: The New "Cantina" Song Performed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and J.J Abrams

Posted: 04 May 2016 08:00 PM PDT

This year's Star Wars Day feels bigger than ever before because the franchise is bigger than ever before. It's the first Star Wars Day since The Force Awakens broke all kinds of box office records, and with plans to release a new Star Wars every year in play, days like this are gonna be stuffed with a lot of fun things for fans. This is probably our favorite fun thing, and it's a video of a surprise performance/announcement from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams outside the Hamilton theater in New York City. In it, they perform the new "Cantina" song or "Jabba Flow," which is the song Manuel helped create for the film and specifically the moment when we arrive at Maz Canata's castle. Manuel reveals it was a song...

Why the Two-Part 'Avengers: Infinity War' Won't Be Like 'Harry Potter' or 'The Hunger Games'

Posted: 04 May 2016 07:00 PM PDT

A strange thing happened once studios began splitting up big, highly anticipated franchise finales into multiple parts. On one hand the initial idea sounded promising -- here was even more of something we love so dearly. But there was some backlash, especially with adaptations, because stretching one book into two movies always hurt part one simply because it wasn't as cool as part two. So when it came to the two-part Avengers finale -- announced last year as Avengers: Infinity War Parts 1 and 2, due in 2018 and 2019 respectively, there was definitely some uneasiness among fans that this would suffer from feeling like one story stretched into two. When Fandango sat down with Infinity War (and Captain America: Civil War) writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus...

New 'The Shallows' Trailer: Blake Lively Still Can't Get Away From That Huge Shark

Posted: 04 May 2016 04:30 PM PDT

March brought us the first trailer for The Shallows, a new thriller from Non-Stop and Run All Night director Jaume Collet-Serra. But The Shallows isn't another angry Liam Neeson action movie. In fact, unless the Irish giant shows up as a motion capture shark, this'll mark Collet-Serra's first non-Nesson movie since Orphan. The Shallows stars Blake Lively as a young woman who just needs to get away from it all, so she finds a secluded beach her mother once told her about and plans to spend the day surfing, relaxing and enjoying paradise. Of course that doesn't happen, and instead she gets stuck in the world's worst staring contest with a shark. When that excellent teaser trailer hit, we said it looked like "90 minutes of Blake Lively...

The '80s Live! Play Free Games at the 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Retro X: Arcade

Posted: 04 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT

Ah, the 1980s! The decade saw the rise of blockbuster movies aimed at the widest audience possible, concurrent with the rise of video games as a serious competitor in the entertainment business. As it happens, the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse is set during the 1980s, revolving around the return of the so-called first mutant, known as Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac). He decides that the decade is not to his liking, so he decides to change things dramatically. While awaiting the arrival of the movie later this month, why not spend some time playing video games? The era was rich with great games like Pac-Man, Centipede, Q*bert, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug, Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Frogger, Pole Position, Tetris, Defender and more. Compared to today's games, the graphics are primitive, but if you...
