Steven Spielberg and Colin Trevorrow Reteam to Produce a New Amblin Movie

Posted: 18 May 2016 09:00 PM PDT

This week, we shared an interview with Steven Spielberg in which he talks about a need for more women making big Hollywood movies. And now today we get news that he's found one. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he and his Jurassic World director, Colin Trevorrow, plus X-Men franchise writer/producer Simon Kinberg are joining together with Emily Carmichael for her feature debut. For Amblin Pictures, Carmichael will write and direct something called Powerhouse, which stems from a concept by Trevorrow. While nothing is known about its plot, we can assume that it will have a fantasy element if they've picked the filmmaker based on her award-winning shorts. One of them, 2011's The Hunter and the Swan Discuss Their Meeting, can be watched here for a taste of her...

Watch: Elaborate 'Rain' Short Film Shows Storm Doesn't Need the X-Men

Posted: 18 May 2016 07:30 PM PDT

Fandom often shows itself in many different forms. Cosplay, tattoos, posters, toy collections, constant line quoting, even naming children after characters. But few parts of fandom show off obsession quite like the fan film. They can take surprising amounts of money and, perhaps more crucially, time, as evidence by Rain, a 23-minute elaborate labor of fan love for X-Men's Storm. Rain is essentially a dream come true for star Maya Glick, whose pitch for the project explained that her own rough childhood left her feeling a bit like a mutant. Then she randomly discovered the X-Men and Storm and quickly latched onto a powerful icon that, despite being fictitious, made her feel a little less alone in the world. That may sound sappy, but it's an endearing example of how we all...

Marvel Studios Countdown: Exploring the History of That Undersea Prison In 'Captain America: Civil War'

Posted: 18 May 2016 06:00 PM PDT

We’ve been treated to Asgard and Wakanda and other wondrous places that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has to offer, but one place we can’t imagine anyone wanting to visit is the Raft. The high-tech prison from Captain America: Civil War is indeed a locale ripped right from the pages of Marvel Comics. It’s a relatively new creation from 2005’s New Avengers #1. As we see it in Civil War, it’s an underwater supermax where Cap’s cohorts are sent immediately following the battle in the airport. It doesn’t appear to be built specifically for them, so one could assume that MCU characters like the Abomination or any living Chitauri left behind by the invasion seen in Avengers are housed there. When we first saw it rise from the ocean, we assumed...

The New 'Popstar' Trailer Is Hella Dope -- Is This the Summer of the Comedy?

Posted: 18 May 2016 04:30 PM PDT

One look at the summer movie schedule and it's clear the next few months will find a lot of big-budgeted sequels heading our way. And while those movies will get the most attention, it's actually the season's comedies that may steal the show. From the excellent Neighbors 2 and The Nice Guys to next month's Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping to Central Intelligence to Ghostbusters to Bad Moms (and, sure, throw in Finding Dory and The Secret Life of Pets, too), this summer is stuffed with all different kinds of hilarious-looking comedies. So is this the summer of the comedy? Take Popstar for example. The new trailer is below, and from the first line ("Ever since I was born, I was dope"), this film seems like it's the music-industry spoof we never...

'Drive' Director to Remake Classic Horror Movie 'Witchfinder General'

Posted: 18 May 2016 03:00 PM PDT

If you saw the documentary My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, then you witnessed Refn's anxiety and anguish as his movie Only God Forgives debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013. The documentary by his wife Liv Corfixen tracked the movie's production and release, including its muted reception at Cannes, yet it also showed how quickly he bounced back the next morning, ready to move on to his next project. That project proved to be The Neon Demon, set to premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival on Friday. The horror thriller follows an aspiring model (Elle Fanning) who moves to Los Angeles and encounters a group of voracious women. The ladies are obsessed with beauty and very much desire the aspiring model's youth and vitality. Here's the latest...

Watch: New 'Ghostbusters' Trailer Reveals Its Own Stay Puft-like Villain

Posted: 18 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT

Another trailer for the new Ghostbusters has arrived, and outside of it seeming to imply there's a fuller title, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, it is looking more and more like a remake than a totally new entity. In this second spot we get to see more of Slimer, Chris Hemsworth becoming possessed in a way that reminds us of the Gatekeeper/Keymaster stuff from the original, and most noteworthy of all, the towering villain Rowan looking like a straight-up refurbishing of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.  There is a lot that looks fresh, though. And we don't just mean the change in genders for the main characters. The new trailer shows off a lot of the special effects, and there's a feeling that this version offers more and bigger spectacle than the 1984 movie...
