The Geek Beat: A Celebration of Great Geeky Movies That Didn't Need Sequels

Posted: 17 May 2016 09:00 PM PDT

No matter how you feel about films that go the franchise route, they're here to stay – and we've already had a long list of sequels, prequels, and spinoffs hit theaters this year. With seven of the ten highest-grossing movies of the year at this point serving as follow-ups or prequels to other movies, it's getting to the point where successful films that don't turn into a franchise are the exception to the rule. But it wasn't – and in some cases, isn't – always that way. Despite offering some of the greatest examples of saga-building film franchises, the superhero, sci-fi, and fantasy genres has also been home to quite a few one-and-done movies that have managed to win over audiences with just a single story. Watch: 'Nice Guys' Stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling Deal with a Very Angry Producer

Posted: 17 May 2016 07:30 PM PDT

What happens when your new original movie is opening up on a weekend where it's competition includes a sequel to a very successful comedy (Neighbors 2) and an adaptation of a wildly successful game (The Angry Birds)? Well if you're The Nice Guys, you release stuff like this -- a viral video featuring producer Joel Silver screaming at stars Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in an effort to get them to promote the movie in more clever ways. Check it out.   While it does not end with Crowe dressed as his Gladiator character fighting Ryan Gosling in a tiger costume, we do love the surprising comedic stylings of producer Joel Silver. His angry-man shtick here reminds us of Rob Reiner's amusing role in The Wolf of Wall Street. There is some sad truth to...

'Tetris The Movie' Will Cost More Than 'Deadpool'

Posted: 17 May 2016 04:30 PM PDT

Tetris The Movie has long been a joke in the entertainment world, a sort of "What's next, Tetris The Movie?" quip whenever something popular but plotless gets turned into a movie. And there have even been flirtations with it actually happening over the years, but it never came to pass. But now it's happening. Like, for real. Several companies are uniting together in some sort of multi-shape configuration to form a powerblock that will actually make Tetris The Movie a reality. Not only is Tetris The Movie moving forward, but it's doing so with an $80 million budget. For comparison's sake, that's $22 million more than the reported budget for Deadpool. That's more than other spectacle-heavy movies like Goosebumps, The 5th Wave, London...

But what about his old love interest Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman? Marvel head Kevin Feige confirmed that Portman would not be returning in the next installment of the series, explaining: "There are only a couple of scenes on Earth in this movie," with most of the story taking place "in the cosmos."
