Ridley Scott And His 'Martian' Writer Sign Up for Violence With 'Wraiths of the Broken Land'

Posted: 10 May 2016 09:00 PM PDT

The Martian is Ridley Scott's most successful movie in years. It not only did well commercially and critically, but it also earned a surprising seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. So it's very exciting to learn that he and his core team behind that movie are reuniting for a new project, Wraiths of the Broken Land. That title may sound like it could be yet another piece of science fiction for the Blade Runner director, but it's actually a western. Specifically, Wraiths of the Broken Land is a 2013 novel from Bone Tomahawk writer-director S. Craig Zahler. It's a violent revenge story about a family of gunslingers who shoot, stab and slaughter their way across the badlands in pursuit of their sisters, who have been kidnapped and forced into...

'Avengers' and 'Batman v Superman' Costumer Is Designing New Spacesuits for Real Astronauts

Posted: 10 May 2016 07:30 PM PDT

The movies have been a great inspiration for real-life space programs since Georges Melies gave us A Trip to the Moon, so it's not surprising to learn that members of the movie industry are now actually working for the space industry. No, today's equivalent of Stanley Kubrick hasn't been hired to fake a Mars landing. We're talking a legimate gig. Costume designer Jose Fernandez, of Ironhead Studio (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice; Captain America: Civil War), revealed to Bleep magazine that he's been working on real spacesuits for the private aerospace company Space X. He wasn't even aware of who they were when he was contacted to particpate in the bidding process. And then Fernandez, who's worked on numerous sci-fi movies...

First Trailer for 'The Woods' Boldly Promises One of the Scariest Movies Ever Made

Posted: 10 May 2016 04:30 PM PDT

When a trailer doesn't want to show you too much, they pull quotes from movie critics to help fuel your imagination instead of revealing the whole thing. They want you to take those words and figure out their context, to plant the seeds that the images you're seeing will blossom into something special. And in the case of The Woods, the trailer is promising those seeds will blossom into some kind of nightmare vision that will send people screaming from the theater. So, yeah, having your first trailer claim that you're one of the scariest movies ever made is a pretty bold tactic, but at least in the case of The Woods, there's some evidence to back it up. Sure, the trailer itself is creepy. The wind's low, unnerving howl. That low frequency tone. The woman...

Summer's Weirdest Movies: Watch Trailers for 'Swiss Army Man,' 'Yoga Hosers' and 'Tickled'

Posted: 10 May 2016 03:00 PM PDT

Sure, you've got your Captain America and X-Men and Finding Dory, but what if you're more interested in skipping the blockbusters this summer in favor of something with a big splash of weird? Then these are for you. Note: To help you navigate the level of weirdness of each film, we'll rate its weirdness in bananas. Tickled (June 17) What it's about: This documentary completely took us by surprise when we watched it at this past Sundance Film Festival. On paper, it sounds like a hilarious look inside the hidden world of competitive tickling. But once you unwrap this odd documentary -- about a journalist who discovers a tickling video and then attempts to find out the story behind it -- you begin to learn how dark, disturbing and frightening the story actually...

Posted: 10 May 2016 01:30 PM PDT

Details about Jason Bourne, the next installment in the thriller series, began leaking out earlier this year. It's a reunion for star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass, who first teamed up for the second installment, The Bourne Supremacy, and brought the series to an apparent conclusion in The Bourne Ultimatum. Jeremy Renner then came on board to lead The Bourne Legacy, a spin-off featuring a new character, but fans continued to clamor for more Bourne. The news that Damon and Greengrass would be telling a new chapter in the life of the operative was quite exciting. Back in February, Damon described the first three films as an "identity journey," which led to the character recovering his memories, but still left him "in a very dark and tortured...
