Rose Byrne: Oiling Up Shirtless Zac Efron Was 'Disgusting'

Posted:

US-ENTERTAINMENT-CINEMA-NEIGHBORS 2Rose Byrne is a comedy star on the rise, whether you (or she) realizes it or not.

With comedically supercharged co-stars like Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Dave Franco, Ike Barinholtz, Carla Gallo, and Lisa Kudrow, the actress is in hilarious company in "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising," but let's not forget that Byrne herself has an enviable Hollywood comedy career, with huge hits like "Bridesmaids," "Neighbors," and "Spy" under her belt. And she's showing no signs of slowing down.

We recently sat down with Byrne to talk about why it made sense for her to do a sequel to 2014's comedy hit "Neighbors," why she and Seth make such a great team, how her pregnancy affected filming, and what oiling up a shirtless Zac Efron is really like (hint: it's not as sexy as it sounds).

Moviefone: At one point did you decide you'd be game for a follow-up -- immediately after the first one? After the script?

Rose Byrne: Pretty early. ... I wanted to know what the idea was. It evolved until I was ready to say yes. It was always a collaboration, too. They're very collaborative -- Nick [Stoller], Seth, and Evan [Goldberg] -- the whole team. So I definitely loved doing the first one. I loved working with Seth and Zac and Nick, who is a dear friend and gave me my break in comedy. So when I got the chance to work with him again, I was like, 'I would love to do a sequel. Obviously, it would be really fun.' Yeah, it was pretty fast, really. It's 2016, and the movie -- the other one -- only came out in 2014. So it is a pretty incredibly fast turn around if you think about it.

What makes you and Seth such a great on-screen team?

He very much entertains me, Seth. And perhaps maybe I entertain him. I'm not sure -- you'll have to ask him. But I think we have a sense of entertaining one another, so that's a big plus. That gift goes a long way. And he's very perceptive. His comedy always comes from such great observational moments and beats, and it always catches me unaware. Chemistry's so strange, isn't it? It's something that you can't predict. It doesn't matter. Even when people hate each other, that's good chemistry.

I've given up trying to figure out how you get it or how you don't because you do your best on the day and everything, but you just never know what's going to read and what isn't. So we were really lucky with it. Nick Stoller's a really incredible director, and he's very good at casting. He's such a big part of it, obviously, and he's always consistently -- always his movies have great actors in them.

Seth is famously improvisational, but where do you fall on the improv scale?

I'm OK. I've gotten to see and watch the best people in the world, like Seth and Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy and Maya Rudolph, Russell Brand, Jonah Hill -- these incredible people I've watched do it. But my talent is a little ephemeral -- sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not. It's not effortless to me, whereas it is for those guys. I didn't come from an improv background.

Why do you think it's important to portray women behaving badly on screen?

It's interesting. I just did this film with Susan Sarandon called "The Meddler," and we were promoting it the last few weeks. She's one of my idols -- I love her. She somehow brought up "Thelma & Louise." We were talking about that in the interview, and she was saying that at the time, it was so controversial because it was women behaving badly, and they were all like, "This is going to be groundbreaking and this is going to change everything." And I was like, wow, that's exactly what they said when we did "Bridesmaids." It's the same thing. It's a cyclical thing.

I guess it's gotta come to a point where it's not a talking point, which would be interesting, that it's like, oh, women can behave any way they want because they're fully fledged human beings with lots of different interesting things. They can be flawed and they can be brilliant and they can be dull and they can be as mean as the guys. So that was really sort of interesting thing to hear her talk about and realize, oh, things have changed, but have they changed that much? Not really. So films like "Neighbors" are great because they enable the women to be in on the fun. In films like "The Hangover" or "Grown Ups" or whatever other types of comedies like that, the women aren't always allowed in on the fun. Something like this is very different.

You oiled up a shirtless Zac Efron in this movie. What was that like?

That was hilarious. It was with Ike as well, so we were just laughing, and Nick just kept encouraging us to take it very seriously and to really enjoy it -- and the more we sat there, the more we started laughing. We were rubbing pork fat on him. It's ridiculous. The actual stuff was disgusting. It was like a real piece of meat that had been cooked and seasoned in all this oregano and thyme, and then it was injected with baby oil to make it really, really greasy. So it was disgusting. It was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't get it off my hands. It was this whole thing. So we were also totally grossed out.

The sex scenes in both "Neighbors" movies are so funny -- how are they choreographed?

It's funny -- it's much harder to do an intimate one that is actually very real. That's a more challenging [thing], whereas a comedy sex scene, it's comedic. It's supposed to be ridiculous and funny. We've done the first one, so after being milked, really nothing is that bad. Everything else is like, you can't really throw anything at me now.

You were actually pregnant during filming, so did that affect the story?

They had actually toyed with the idea of making Kelly pregnant before I told them, so when I told them, they were fine. They were like, 'Great! That's it.'

Did you have to scale back on the physical comedy?

A little bit. I think there was a scene where they wanted me to do a cartwheel. I was like, 'Uh, I can't do a cartwheel.' So a little bit, but not too much. I really enjoyed working through my pregnancy. Everyone was very nice to me. So I plan to do it on every job. Wish me luck.'Neighbors 2' Interview: The Objectification of Zac Efron

Ewan McGregor to Star in 'Fargo' Season 3 as Two Brothers

Posted:

FX announced the actor is headlining the third season of the acclaimed drama in not one, but two roles. He'll play brothers (not twins) named Emmit and Ray Stussy, described as:

Emmit Stussy is the Parking Lot King of Minnesota. A handsome, self-made, real estate mogul and family man, Emmit sees himself as an American success story. His slightly younger brother, Ray Stussy, on the other hand is more of a cautionary tale. Balding, pot-bellied, Ray is the kind of guy who peaked in high school. Now a parole officer, Ray has a huge chip on his shoulder about the hand he's been dealt, and he blames his brother, Emmit, for his misfortunes.

Season 3 of "Fargo" will take place in 2010, a few years after the events of season 1. The second season was set in the 1970s. Executive producer Noah Hawley has hinted that a familiar character from a previous season, but no other casting has been announced yet.

'Thor: Ragnarok' Adds Jeff Goldblum, Karl Urban, Cate Blanchett

Posted:

ThorAs if he's not in enough big movie franchises, Jeff Goldblum is joining "Thor: Ragnarok."

Marvel announced the cast for the sequel, which stars Chris Hemsworth as the titular god. The studio also confirmed the addition of Cate Blanchett, who's been rumored for months to play the main villain, Hela. This makes her the first major female villain in a Marvel movie, a subject on which Stephen Colbert recently blasted the studio.

Goldblum — who's next seen in "Independence Day: Resurgence" — plays the Grand Master, an Elder of the Universe with millennia of knowledge. Karl Urban also jumps on board as Skurge, an Askgardian villain, while Tessa Thompson steps into the role of Valkyrie, an Askgardian hero.

Marvel also confirmed the inclusion of Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, and the return of cast members Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Anthony Hopkins as Odin.

Check Out the First Photo of Charlize Theron in 'Fast 8'

Posted:

"The Last Face" Photocall - The 69th Annual Cannes Film FestivalMeet the newest addition to the world of "The Fast and the Furious" — Cipher.

Universal tweeted the first image of the character played by Charlize Theron in "Fast 8." The Oscar-winning actress joined the cast last month, and co-star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson welcomed her aboard on Instagram.

Not much is known about Cipher, other than that she's the crew's "greatest adversary ever." It definitely seems like Theron is playing yet another badass. "Our crew has faced former military, mercenaries & more. Now they meet Cipher," Universal tweeted with the picture, which shows Theron pictured beside some heavy machine guns. Theron isn't the only new face in "Fast 8." Scott Eastwood is joining as the protege of Kurt Russell's Mr. Nobody. And a few familiar faces will return to the fold: Nathalie Emmanuel and Elsa Pataky are reprising their roles as hacker Ramsey and Elena, respectively.

"Fast 8" is scheduled to hit theaters April 14, 2017.

'Happy Chewbacca' Woman's Life-Affirming Facebook Video Sets Viewing Record

Posted:

Laugh it up, fuzzball! The Internet cannot stop belly laughing along with (not at) Candace Payne, our beloved Wookie Woman, whose joyful wearing of a Chewbacca mask she picked up at Kohl's has earned nearly 38 million views so far. (Probably more by the time you read this.) Plus, it has been shared more than 1.1 million times at this point. According to Business Insider, that makes it Facebook Live's most-watched video of all time.

The Force is clearly strong with this Star Wars fan, who labeled her Facebook video "It's the simple joys in life....," and that simple joy is definitely the appeal.

She starts her video by admitting, "I'd like to say that I bought this for my son that would really, really want it. ... However, this is mine. At the end of the day, this is mine that I bought and I'm going to keep it for my own!" She opens the box to much fanfare, saying it's part of her own birthday joy. Once she puts on the mask and plays the Wookie sound, she starts laughing -- and keeps laughing the most beautiful laugh for several minutes.

Watch:

"I'm such a happy Chewbacca!"

LOVE LOVE LOVE this! You should read the Facebook comments, too, since -- for once -- the Internet bonded through happy tears. It's refreshing to see something so innocent and joyful be embraced by the planet. We needed this. And Kohl's is probably thrilled, too, since they are about to sell a lot more Chewbacca masks.

Netflix Reveals Title, Poster for 'Gilmore Girls' Revival

Posted:

A year's worth of coffee talk is coming our way in the "Gilmore Girls" revival. Netflix has yet to share an official 2016 premiere date (beyond "soon"), but we now have a title and a tasty little poster.

"Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life," has four 90-minute episodes taking place in the winter, spring, summer, and fall. Hence "Year in the Life."

Here's the poster:
Lauren Graham was just on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to reveal the title and talk about making the series/mini-movies, saying they were "almost done" shooting. (Luke must've wrapped his scenes a little bit early.) "It's been the most incredible experience," Lauren told Ellen. "I cry trying to talk about it because it's just been so -- I feel so lucky to get to do it. But it's also been so bizarre."

Watch Lauren explain the bizarre-ness to Ellen:

Hopefully there's room for a second year in the life after this one.

New 'Game of Thrones' Episode Synopses Reveal Return of 'Old Foe'

Posted:

This Sunday's "Game of Thrones" Season 6, Episode 5 was just hyped as an "all-timer," but we're equally excited about what comes after that.

HBO just dropped intel on the May 29 and June 5 episodes:

Season 6, Episode 6, "Blood of My Blood," premieres Sunday, May 29. Here's the synopsis:

"An old foe comes back into the picture. Gilly (Hannah Murray) meets Sam's (John Bradley) family. Arya (Maisie Williams) faces a difficult choice. Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) faces off against the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce)."

Written by Bryan Cogman; directed by Jack Bender.

Season 6, Episode 7, "The Broken Man," premieres Sunday, June 5. Here's that synopsis:

"The High Sparrow eyes another target. Jaime confronts a hero. Arya makes a plan. The North is reminded."

Written by Bryan Cogman; directed by Mark Mylod.

SPOILER & SPECULATION ALERT
Who is this old foe? Do you think it's The Hound, who is said to be the one actor Ian McShane resurrects in his one-off role? McShane already revealed that his character "is an ex-warrior who's become a peacenik. So I have this group of peaceful...it's like a cult, peaceful tribe... who have brought back...I bring back this beloved character that everyone thinks is dead." The Hound was a foe on screen, but beloved by viewers, and in the book, he is thought to be the gravedigger on the Quiet Isle, not quite dead, with McShane as a TV version of Elder Brother.

The episode title "Broken Man" was thought to perhaps refer to the return of the Hound/Sandor Clegane, but if Jaime confronts a hero, that could be the Riverrun siege. But if/when The Hound does return, when will we get to Cleganebowl?

Arya facing a difficult choice and making a plan could suggest she receives information about her Westeros family and is ready to stop being No One and head over to Winterfell. Or that may just be wishful thinking. How is the North reminded? Is this the start of the Stark vs. Bolton showdown?

Do you have any theories/hopes for Episode 6 and Episode 7? There are only 10 episodes to the season (wah!) so we're already on the way out.

'Game of Thrones' Season 6, Episode 5 Hyped as an 'All-Timer'

Posted:

Better sprinkle yourself with Hodor hype dust and let it carry you across the next few days 'cause "Game of Thrones" Season 6, Episode 5 has been teased as an "all-timer." Let's go break down "The Door"!

As of this Sunday we will already be halfway done with the 2016 season. That's unfair. But at least the gods are reportedly smiling on us with an especially strong hour. We first came across the tease on Reddit, where hype lives, dies, and is revived by the hour. Someone there was listening to the latest podcast from HBO's Bill Simmons. At the start of his show, Simmons did some housekeeping, mentioning the new start time for "After the Thrones": 1 a.m. ET, right after the West Coast airing of "Game of Thrones."

After that, he teased, "Sources say that apparently this week of 'Game of Thrones' is an 'all-timer.'" His podcast buddy said last week's episode was pretty strong, so it sets up high expectations to call this one of of the all-time greats. It could just be hype overload, and "The Door" isn't any better or worse than the first four episodes. But we're feeling it now.

"The Door" was written by showrunners David Benioff & D. B. Weiss and directed by Jack Bender. Here's the synopsis: "Tyrion seeks a strange ally. Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) learns a great deal. Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) goes on a mission. Arya (Maisie Williams) is given a chance to prove herself."Here's the preview, which also shows pieces of The Kingsmoot, Sansa confronting Littlefinger, new priestess Kinvara meeting Varys and Tyrion, Jorah revealing (to Dany?) his advancing greyscale, and Bran seeing Night's King.We see Meera shaking Bran, trying to get him to come out of his vision. The Three-Eyed Raven warned him about staying away too long. There's a theory about EVERYTHING Hodor, that young Wylis became Hodor because he too can warg and went too far/something happened. There's thought that maybe he chose to warg into a horse (maybe to be closer to Lyanna Stark) and the horse was killed when Hodor was inside which could explain his damaged mind. Will we see more of Hodor's past this week, since the photo at top shows Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven returning to Winterfell? Or is that not part of what makes this an "all timer"?Will Kinvara, the new red priestess, talk up Daenerys Targaryen as Azor Ahai, as a counterpoint to Melisandre thinking it's Jon Snow? And what about Tyrion Lannister's past? Is he ...? Or that other Meera theory. Is she...? When will we be able to start killing some theories and letting new ones be born?

Check out a more Episode 5 photos, and prepare to be either thrilled or disappointed this Sunday, May 22.

'Captain America: Civil War' Is Now Top Film of 2016 Worldwide, Can Anything Beat It?

Posted:

Take that, "Deadpool"! And "Batman v Superman"! And, you know, "Zootopia"!

"Captain America: Civil War" released in the U.S. on May 6, but it has been in international theaters since April 27 and, wherever it goes, it kicks all the Underoos. As of this week, "Civil War" passed "Zootopia" to be the highest grossing film of 2016 around the world, with $981,945,889 in domestic plus foreign receipts. And it's not slowing down. So far, the domestic intake is $310,545,889, which means it's probably going to quickly pass "Deadpool" as the top domestic title, since Ryan Reynolds's superhero is now at $362.5 million. The international gross for "Civil War" is now at $671.4 million, and $164.2 of that is just from China.

UPDATE: These superheroes move so fast, those numbers are already outdated. Later on May 20, Disney/Marvel announced "Civil War" had passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, making it the 25th film to do so. As Variety noted, "The tentpole hit $314 million in the U.S. on Thursday, its 14th day of domestic release, and $677 million internationally after 23 days." This is the fourth Marvel Cinematic Universe film to pass $1 billion, joining "The Avengers," "Avengers: Age of Ultron," and "Iron Man 3."

So can anything top it? "Civil War" has already left "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" behind, since it took in $870 million total. But the year is just getting started. Can "Finding Dory," "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," and/or "Rogue One" top "Civil War"?

Collider offered a handy breakdown of where "Civil War" currently fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of worldwide gross, but since the film has only been out in theaters for a couple of weeks and it's still doing very well, this ranking will probably change:

1. Marvel's The Avengers — $1,519,557,910 (worldwide)
2. Avengers: Age of Ultron — $1,405,413,868
3. Iron Man 3 — $1,215,439,994
4. Captain America: Civil War — $978,045,905* as of 5/19, but it's now higher
5. Guardians of the Galaxy — $773,312,399
6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier — $714,421,503
7. Thor: The Dark World — $644,602,516
8. Iron Man 2 — $623,933,331
9. Iron Man — $585,174,222
10. Ant-Man — $519,445,163
11. Thor — $449,326,618
12. Captain America: The First Avenger — $370,569,774
13. The Incredible Hulk — $263,427,551

Do you think any title will pass "Civil War" in 2016?

Sara Ramirez Officially Exits 'Grey's Anatomy': See the Beautiful Tributes

Posted:

Dr. Callie Torres has left the building on "Grey's Anatomy." On the bright side, at least they didn't kill her off. Here's one win against the trope, anyway! But, sadly, it was confirmation to the rumor that actress Sara Ramirez was leaving the show.

Sara had tweeted a "wrap" note in April, which launched suspicion that this was it for Callie. After last night's Season 12 finale, Sara, showrunner Shonda Rhimes, co-star Ellen Pompeo (Dr. Meredith Grey), and fans reacted on Twitter to Callie's official exit/"time off":

She has to feel good about that sweet send-off! And maybe Callie will return someday, if Sara just needed some "time off."

According to Entertainment Weekly, the news of Sara Ramirez's departure comes when five of her costars -- Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr., and Kevin McKidd -- are also renegotiating their contracts.
